Here Come The Buses! It’s the exciting news that local residents

have been waiting for. In conjunction with Busways, new services have now been introduced to Jordan Springs as part of the NSW Government’s Growth Buses program.

The NSW Government has rewritten bus timetables to improve connections with trains and ferries and get more out of the network for customers.

The bus timetable improves routes by better matching services with demand. This means new routes have been added, some have had service frequency increased and some routes have changed.

The bus timetable delivers more than 1700 extra weekly services including 800 in the peaks.

Effective from 6th October 2013, the new Jordan Springs bus route will operate seven days per week, commencing at 30 minute intervals during the peak periods and hourly during the day and on Saturday.

A limited Sunday service will be provided. Naturally, as the area continues to grow, more services will be made available.

For more Information or access to the latest bus timetables visit: transportnsw.info or call 131 500 or TTY 1800 637 500

We all know that everyone dies. And yet very few people like thinking about it. Recently there have been a lot of television ads for life and funeral insurance. It’s good to see people starting to think about death. But what happens when we die?

Jesus spoke a lot about what happens when we die. He was the one who said that there was a heaven and a hell.

“ 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 13:49-50 (NIV))

The great news is that Jesus came to save people from this place of “weeping and gnashing of teeth”. We all need to trust Jesus so much as to hand over our lives to Him. Those that love Jesus and are prepared to follow Him will be forgiven and allowed entry into heaven.

Beware of MagpiesWith the change of season residents are urged to beware of

magpies nesting in their midst. Cr Mark Davies said magpies nest at this time of year, changing their normal placid behaviour.

“Spring is a great time to enjoy some of the fantastic outdoor recreational facilities in our City and soak up our beautiful natural environment. It’s also when birds become more active in the warmer weather so take care in green spaces such as parks, reserves or backyards,” Cr Davies said.

“Spring is when nesting magpies are protective of their young and tend to swoop on people walking underneath. This can be dangerous for small children so be sure to keep an eye on them when out and about. By keeping out of wildlife’s way and leaving them be they’ll generally do the same for us,” he said.

If a resident feels that a magpie is a menace they can contact the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service on 1300 361 967 or Council on 4732 7777. You can also refer to the Magpies page on the NSW Environment and Heritage webpage: environment.nsw.gov.au/animals/TheAustralianMagpie.htm

A person cannot taste food unless it is mixed with saliva. For example, if a strong-tasting substance like salt is placed on a dry tongue, the taste buds will not be able to taste it. As soon as a drop of saliva is added and the salt is dissolved, however, a definite taste sensation results. This is true for all foods. Try it!

Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa, proudly announced an historic milestone for Fernhill Estate, where they played host to the 2013 Emirates Melbourne Cup as part of the Cup’s national tour earlier this month.

On the magnificent grounds of the historic Fernhill Estate, the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Penrith CBD Corporation with the owners of Fernhill Estate, Simon and Brenda Tripp, hosted a 2013 Melbourne Cup breakfast for local business owners and community members.

“There are only 34 sites within Australia that have the privilege of hosting the 2013 Melbourne Cup in the lead up to ‘the race that stops a nation’ and Fernhill Estate was one of these sites” Tanya Davies said. “This rare opportunity to host the 2013 Melbourne Cup is testament to not only the strong Melbourne Cup connection that Fernhill Estate holds, but also to the modern vision that new owners, Simon and Brenda Tripp hold for Fernhill”

Two Melbourne Cup winners were bred from the Fernhill Estate – Chester (1877) and Grand Flaneur (1880).

This historic event with the 2013 Melbourne Cup would not have occurred without the vision that Simon and Brenda Tripp hold for Fernhill to see this historic Estate opened up for the enjoyment of the wider community.

In conjunction with the hosting of the 2013 Melbourne Cup, the Hon. George Souris, Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Hospitality and Racing and Minister for the Arts announced the granting of a racing licence to host a Picnic Race Day on 9 November 2013 as part of the Melbourne Cup celebrations.

“I encourage the community to experience the Picnic Race Day. There will be a six race program,

prizes for the best dressed racegoers, free kids activities, a wide range of local and international cuisine, live entertainment and all the action from Flemington live on the big screen” Tanya Davies said.

Theology is one of the oldest academic disciplines. The word comes from the Greek language meaning ‘discourse on God’. An interesting development occurred during the 1950 / 1960’s. A series of studies which dated back to the early 30’s were made public. One was the publication of the

“Phenomenon of Man”. It was written by a Jesuit Priest who had a distinguished career in paleontology- indeed receiving honour from the French Academy of Science- Teilhard De Chardin. His work gave impetus to Christians in positing the argument that evolution is a fact and that all of creation continues to evolve to a given end. To Chardin that end is that ‘all will be summed up in Christ’ with the final end being the full revelation and understanding of God.

Chardin’s major emphasis centres on two concepts. As such, not everything is answered, but impetus is given to constructing sound theological premises. The first is his concept of ‘neogenesis’: the development and continuity of knowledge-‘coming to know’. The second is what he calls ‘noosphere’: within humans a sphere of consciousness is slowly ‘enveloping’

our planet. He then argues that this leads to ‘cosmogenesis’: the process by which existence is and is evolving. He argues in his “Hymn of the Universe” written in 1974 that “humanity, the spirit of the earth, the synthesis of the individual and peoples, the paradoxical conciliation of the element with the whole, of the one with the many: all these are regarded as utopian fantasies, yet they are biologically necessary”. Centuries before Chardin’s studies it was St Paul who argued a similar concept: “the whole creation groans and travails in pain together …..we ourselves groan within ourselves waiting for our adoption, the redemption of our body”. This ‘summing up all things in Christ’ is faith orientated finding its basis as seeing Jesus Christ completing hundreds of years of Semitic prophesy which found culmination in His crucifixion and resurrection. Acceptance of this enhances and strengthens humanity moving towards the final synthesis of individual and peoples with their Creator.

AN INVITATION: on Saturday 9th November from 10.00am to 3.00pm Saint David’s has an OPEN DAY, During the morning a talk will be given on the history of the Esty Reed Organ that has been restored. Another talk will discuss the role of the Undertaker and the art of embalming! The permanent display of memorabilia in the Luxford Room will be open for viewing.

In August, 16 dedicated, enthusiastic and caring volunteers opened the doors to a new senior’s social club for the Penrith/Nepean Community.

At a Public Meeting hosted by the Penrith RSL sub-Branch in June, a unanimous decision was made to establish a Day Club in the Penrith/Nepean area. The Penrith RSL sub-Branch who sponsors the Day Club wanted to help reduce social isolation among older people who may be frail, or may just have trouble getting out and about.

Penrith RSL sub-Branch President, Neville Barnier said the Day Club program meets the aims and objectives of the RSL in providing assistance to older members of our community, beyond the normal ex-service support we give. Whilst our main focus is looking after the welfare of our own members, we believed the resources of the RSL and our sub-Branch could be put to the extra benefit of assisting older non-ex service people in our community. We have received great support from RSL NSW Headquarters and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (NSW) who provided their knowledge and training to get us up and running, Mr Barnier said.

The new Day Club is a self-funded, not for profit program. Day Clubs are entirely run by volunteers with the support of the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA),

NSW Office and the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) (NSW Branch).

There are 72 Day Clubs across NSW, and while their focus is veterans, they are open to everyone, not just the ex-service community. Day Clubs provide social opportunities and activities

for older people who are still living at home, but who are unable to attend more active community programs. They also provide volunteers with numerous opportunities to help out, learn new skills, make friends, and make a difference to the lives of others.

The new Nepean Valley Day Club will meet each Wednesday from 10am-2pm in the Salvation Army Hall at Glenmore Park. Each week the volunteers will provide participants with a varied, fun-filled program

including gentle exercise, mental stimulation, leisure activities, guest speakers and entertainment, as well as morning tea and lunch - all for a nominal contribution. Transport may also be provided.

If you have an interest in joining as a participant, or you wish to offer your support as a volunteer, or you just want to know more, please give us a call! We would love to have you join us! For more information, phone Jan Eaton on 4704 8506 or Noelene Simmonds on 4735 1435.

When Should I Start Planning to Retire?

This is one of the most common questions I am asked, and the simple answer is as soon as possible.

In reality, for most of our working life there are priorities that take precedence ahead of our retirement so rightfully we direct our income to achieving these more immediate goals. As we go through life there are a number of stages that influence how we prepare for our retirement.

Accumulation PhaseWhilst we are saving for or paying off our home, saving for

holidays and education, we can have one eye on retirement by giving our superannuation the attention it deserves. This involves ensuring our superannuation is in an appropriate fund and invested in line with our goals, a financial planner can assist in this process. Mandated employer contributions need to be treated as real money and paying the correct attention will ensure these savings are not eroded through mismanagement. Although retirement in this phase is a low priority, being savvy at this point can make a large difference at retirement age.

Empty nest and mortgage freeThis is the point that most of us have significant disposable

income we can contribute to our retirement. Once our kids are off our hands or at least for the most part financially dependent, in general, our living costs reduce significantly. Furthermore our mortgage repayments are our biggest expense, so once this debt is paid we have significant cash surplus and the capacity to save increases dramatically. It is advisable to direct a significant amount of this surplus cash flow to save for retirement. This is a perfect time to speak to an adviser at this point in your life.

Age 55When you turn age 55 a number of financial planning strategies

become available that in many cases allow for you to increase your retirement savings without reducing cash flow. These strategies revolve around accessing your Super through a Pension and replacing taxable income with concessional taxed income. These strategies are further enhanced at age 60.

With people living longer and the government wanting us to be less reliant on the Governmet pension, it is important for all of us to adequately prepare for our retirement and always at least have one eye on this goal throughout our working life.

If you do not have a retirement plan or at least an excellent handle on your superannuation strategy then it is probably advisable to see a Financial advisor to develop a plan.

Applications Now Open For Sporting GrantsMember for Penrith Stuart Ayres

MP is encouraging local groups to apply for NSW Government grants that could fund new sport facilities or programs that help people get active.

The NSW Government is offering grants to local sporting groups and councils planning new and improved sports facilities or programs that increase participation in sport and recreation.

“I know we have a lot of passionate sports people and dedicated club volunteers here in Penrith who would love funding to improve their facilities or run new programs,” Mr Ayres said.

“I encourage them to make the most of this opportunity to secure a grant for their local project – whether it’s building new netball courts, installing shading at a swimming pool or running a special tournament for disadvantaged young people.”

Applications for Round One of the Sport and Recreation Participation and Facility Program 2013-14 close on 30 October 2013.

Grants are capped at $10,000 for participation projects and $25,000 for facility projects. Organisations may apply for multiple projects or project types, with the maximum available to any one organisation in a financial year capped at $50,000. Applicants must contribute 50% or more to the project.

Examples of projects eligible for funding:Facility projects – the construction of new, fixed and portable facilities;

and enhancement of existing facilities.Participation projects – deliver a program or service that will assist

people to become more active.Projects that make sport and recreation facilities safer, more accessible

and environmentally sustainable and programs that provide greater sporting options to seniors, people with a disability and other groups facing barriers to participation are strongly encouraged to apply.

For more information and application guidelines, please visit the website at www.dsr.nsw.gov.au/grants or phone 13 13 02. r Photograph by Shane Corderoy – Water Week Photo Comp winner – 2013 open category

From the Principal’s DeskLlandilo Public School Principal:

Bruno ZulianiStaff and Students and their Families,

would like to thank local residents who were at the school on Election Day and supported our P&C barbecue fundraiser. As the school

term draws to a close I would like to take this opportunity to thank our many parent volunteers who make themselves available in our classrooms and in providing transport for students when it is required. We are a smallish semi-rural school of 280 students but the opportunities provided to our girls and boys in academic, social and sporting endeavours are second to none.

Llandilo Public School is one of 22 schools Australia wide chosen to become involved in a trial promoting the AFC Soccer Asian Cup to be held in Australia in 2015. The program looks at promoting Football using the new Australian curriculum in both English and Mathematics.

Our Year 3 and Year 4 students under the guidance of Mr Neil Bourke and Miss Sarah Crammond have the responsibility of engaging with the trial material, evaluating lessons and providing feedback to the creators (Four Diegos Media) to assist in developing the finished product which will become available for use by all Australian schools in mid 2014.

It’s an honour to have been selected to undertake this important work and it will give our staff and students a head start in adapting engaging and meaningful teaching and learning units reflecting the requirements of the national Curriculum.

All the very best, I hope you enjoyed your Spring vacation and we look forward to welcoming any new students and their families to Llandilo Public School…………….. your local school.

PARENTS’ CORNERArticle by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood ServicesPh: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Got more than one child? Chances are that a lot of your energy is spent sorting out the interactions between them. It’s a big button pusher for parents.

It’s also practice for life in the big, wide world of school, work, and interpersonal relationships.

Sibling rivalry is just conflict, and there are various conflict management tools that you can use…

• Beagoodrolemodel.Yourkidsarelookingatyou, andtheyare the best imitators. If you don’t handle conflict well, your children won’t either.

• Makeyourhomeanemotionallysafeplacetobe.Oneofyourhouse rules should be that the home is a “no put-down zone” or stated in more positive terms a “be kind zone”. That’s no teasing or name calling by both children and parents.

• Make your home a physically safe place to be. Have firmconsequences for physical violence between children. Do you smack your children? As one parent said to me years ago “I smack my children for hitting each other, it just doesn’t make any sense”. Parenting courses like Triple P provide you with the tools for positive parenting.

• Focus on your children’s positive behaviours. The moreyou focus on their positive behaviours the more positive their behaviour will be. This is backed by forty years of research. Actually pay attention to when they are getting along well, and give them descriptive praise, for example, “I really like how nicely you are playing together, you are using nice words and being kind to each other”. I ask my boys in a curious manner, how they were able to play so well together after a great session. This gives them the opportunity to reflect on what works well in getting along.

• Encourage your kids to use “I-statements”. An I-statementfocuses on you owning your own feelings, for example, “when you do … I feel … And remember to use them yourself! However, sometimes the brother is making that high pitched noise because he knows it annoys his sister, and hearing that it makes her angry gives him the satisfaction he was seeking. I-statements are a good tool for being assertive and owning your own feelings but they don’t provide resolution in all situations.

• When the kids are starting to get a bit scratchywith eachother you can get closer to them. I call this technique “proximity and presence”. School teachers use it with disruptive students in the classroom. They get closer.

• You can try some problem solving (from the Second Stepprogramme)… “What’s the problem?” (get them to state the problem objectively with no blame attached) … “What are some solutions to the problem?”…For each solution ask… “is it safe?; how might other people feel about it?; is it fair?; will it work?”. I’ve used this technique with children from age 4 and up.

• Sometimesyoujusthavetoseparatekidssotheycanchilloutfor a while. Sometimes feuding kids can’t see past the overwhelm to think of other strategies, and need assistance from an adult to break the pattern of conflict.

Wow! This is such a big topic. I will have to continue it next month. Basically, the more positive the home is the less conflict there will be, but there will always be some. Conflict provides the opportunity for greater understanding and that’s always a good thing.

I have a heap of parenting groups coming up in Term 4, so hop on over to http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/2013/08/28/parent-groups-term-4-2013/ to have a look to see if something interests you. There is a lot of interest in these courses at the moment and places are limited.

LOOKING GOOD & FEELING GREAT Benefits of Eating Small Frequent Meals for Weight Loss

In the world of diets one of the most popular dilemmas that raises many debates is whether to stick to the eating of the three traditional meals per day, or to eating small frequent meals throughout the day. Although

the two types of eating plans, if planned correctly, may supply the needed daily nutrients and satisfy the recommended calorie allowance, when it comes to losing weight and staying slim, the three larger meals is a common misconception. Let us see why?

Why Three Large Meals Daily and Eating Small Frequent Meals, Affect Weight Loss Differently?

Healthy meals is definitely the base for losing weight the natural way and for living a healthy lifestyle, but having only three of them per day leaves your body waiting too long in between eating times. First, the longer we stay without something to eat, the larger our appetite and hunger grows. This is a very strong reason to make you “break” the rules of your diet without realizing it on time. You can easily consume larger portions of food than you have planned.

Second, feeling hunger for too long can trigger a situation, where the body will lock itself into a state of burning fewer calories, which is also against your weight-loss efforts. To further convince you, think about, how babies need feeding every three hours. And nothing is changed when we grow older. The human body needs regular low fat, healthy food supplies in order to operate properly and maintain good physical health.

Why People Ignore to Eat Regularly?

Frequent eating is one of the keys to rev up your metabolism, because of the thermic effect of food. Like all internal body processes the breakdown and absorption of food requires a substantial amount of calories. This will fire-up your energy levels and suppress the food cravings! If you combine proper food and the right times for eating with regular workouts, it will be easier for you to strengthen and maintain your muscle tone. The more firm muscles you develop, the faster your metabolism becomes and the closer you will get to build firm and well-shaped body in which you will feel great!
