Very few people refer to Cheltenham by its fullname today, that being Cheltenham Spa. Thename still exists, most noticeably with the nameof the railway station, but the spa is often left outof conversation. For many of us when we thinkof a spa in Cheltenham we immediately thinkof the Pittville Pump Room, which until 2003was still a spa. But the Pump Room was notCheltenham’s first spa, the town’s fame as a spatown began over 100 years before the Pump Roomwas completed in 1830.

Cheltenham’s spa waters were originallydiscovered around 1716 when the ‘Original’ or‘Old Well’ was discovered, and the discoveriescontinued up until 1944 when a series of previouslyunmentioned wells were discovered. Altogetherthere were at least twenty-six commerciallyoperated wells within Cheltenham. These wellswere exploited for commercial gain for over twocenturies, housed in buildings ranging from thegrandeur of the Pump Room to what was in somecases little more than a garden shed housing a spa.

Even though fresh waters were being found upuntil the end of the Second World War the greatdays of Cheltenham as a spa were over by as earlyas 1850. Most of the early spas were demolishedby the middle of the nineteenth century with thosethat remained eventually following suit. There wasonce the ‘Montpellier Well’ that is now MontpellierStreet, with shops standing on top of the old well, and there used to be two wells around what is nowRodney Road, one under what is now a car park.

The Pittville Pump Room survived all this andeven though it is no longer a spa, the buildingremains one of Cheltenham’s main attractions forits architecture and history, and in spite of the gloryyears of Cheltenham as a spa town being long gone, the town still, officially, remains Cheltenham Spa.

Saturday 29th October &Sunday 30th October 2011‘How to Draw Realistic Animal Eyes &Fur in Coloured Pencil’ with awardwinning artist FrancesWhitmanat her studio in Cheltenham.Tel 07866 500679Please check the website for workshopdetails and to purchase limited edition printswww.franceswhitmanart.comFrances will be holding DrawingPets Workshops in 2012.

The Local Answer recently enjoyed avisit to the studio of the acclaimedwildlife artist Frances Whitman.

We were enthusiastic to meet Francesafter viewing her website portfolio, but I don’tthink it prepared us for quite howbreathtaking Frances’ artwork was. Thedetail from every pencil and brushstroke wasastounding.Frances told us how she

discovered her natural talent forpainting and drawing whenshe was recovering from anaccident 20 years ago andwas given some pencils andpastels to pass the time by afriend. She has since metwith acclaim for her animalpaintings and drawings.Entirely self taught, she finds

that a mix of Faber-castell pencilsand pastels is the most effectivemedia for achieving the fine details in herdrawings. For her paintings, Frances worksin oils and acrylics. To Frances the most challenging aspect of

her work is capturing eye expression, the lifeand soul of her pictures, for which she runsworkshops from her studio. In 2008 Frances was delighted to win an

award for her drawing of a tiger entitled

‘Hypnotized’ at the 10th Annual Exhibitionof the Marwell International Art Society, theworld’s largest exhibition of wildlife art, which was held at Marwell Zoo. Simon King, the multi award-winning wildlife cameraman,film-maker and television star of BBC’s ‘BigCat Diary’ and ‘Springwatch’ opened theexhibition and presented the awards.

In 2009 Frances was thrilled to winthe SimonCombes Award for theBest African picture in the showat the Wildlife ArtSociety InternationalExhibition held at Nature inArt, Wallsworth Hall, Twig-worth, Glos. Frances waspresented with her awardby Susie Combes. If you would like to see

Frances’ work she is the Artistin Residence for a week at

Nature in Art from the 18th to the23rd October, where you can view her artand purchase prints and cards.

Frances will also be exhibiting her artworkalong with 5 fellow artists Phillip Boulton,Carole Feasey, SonjaWray, John Horton andHenk Van Zanten at Seasons ConferenceCentre, Quat Goose Lane, Swindon Villageon the 12th and 13th November.

When I was asked if I would like to do a review on a ‘NoHands Massage’, I thought “well how is that going to workthen?” I went along and met Sue and Renny and theyexplained the technique which involves the use of theirforearms (they both took it in turn to lie on the couch for photosso I was able to see how they worked). Sue (who treated me this time) first took a medical history

then asked what I wanted to get out of the massage – I optedfor relaxation and loosening up of the muscles. She left meto get undressed, comfortable and covered up on the couchthen, after starting some soothing background music, explained she was going to begin the treatment. Sueadvised me that she wouldn’t talk unless I let her know if Ididn't like anything she was doing, or if it was uncomfortable– I didn't utter a word!I tried very hard to completely switch off – but didn’t quite

manage to. I was conscious of the need to convey myexperience to all you readers, so I didn’t want to risk fallingasleep! Also, not knowing what Sue would be doing next, keptmy mind active – she said this was perfectly normal for thefirst session but, when clients return for further treatments, they relax very quickly.Sue worked on my neck, back and legs – having first gently

massaged in some oil. It felt wonderful! Slightly morepressure than I’ve experienced with a ‘hands’ massage, butnot at all uncomfortable. I was told to remain lying down untilI was ready to move. Sue then left me to get up and dressedbefore returning to ask how I was feeling. I have never feltso completely relaxed after a treatment. We discussed what effect it had had on my body, and I

explained how I felt totally loose – having lost the ‘tight’ musclefeeling I had prior tothe treatment. It was awonderful experience! There’s so much

more to tell about thistype of massage. Some information andcontact details for Sueand Renny are to theleft but you can visit thewebsite to get more‘clued up’ before youenjoy giving it a try.

‘No hands’ massage

An explanation of ‘no hands’ massage ...

Renny Slade has kindly provided a little more information as to the originof NO HANDS® Massage and an opportunity to meet its ‘founder’:NO HANDS is a dynamic new form of Massage that is sweeping acrossthe world as one of the most powerful new therapeutic massagetreatments available. It was developed by massage therapist Gerry Pyvesafter injuring both wrists.Instead of hands the soft surfaces of our forearms are used, and this

unique approach of NO HANDS means that so much more releasecan be achieved than through conventional massage or bodyworktreatments – and all of it pain-free. Most people say that it is deeper,

gentler and more relaxing, and they feelnurtured, connected, released andrejuvenated. For this reason it has been dubbed

“The Gentle Giant” of massage. Wordsand pictures cannot do justice to thepower of this “New Massage” – you canonly really understand it by feeling it foryourself.Sue Tribe and myself have both been

practicing Massage Therapists for over 10 years. In addition Sue practicesthe Mind-Detox Method and Emotional Therapy and I am also aTisserand-trained Aromatherapist. Cheltenham residents will be ableto meet Gerry Pyves, the founder of NO HANDS Massage, when hevisits the town on the 27th of October – please contact us for details. Sue and I would love the opportunity to let you experience the power

of NO HANDS Massage for yourself and offer a £10 discount on thefirst treatment for new clients. Sue Tribe and Renny Slade

St James’ Church,Chipping Campden

4¼miles (6.75km) ~ 2¼ hoursModerate; two climbs (one steep), some mud

1 'Chipping' is found in several Cotswold place names and derives from the Saxon ‘ceping’meaning a market. This was to prove very appropriate, forthe town later established itself as a market centre for wool.Woolstaplers Hall was built by a wool merchant in 1340 as a meeting place for the staplemerchants to purchase raw fleece. The most famous of the merchants wasWilliam Grevel, mentioned by Chaucer in Canterbury Tales. His 14th century house remains almostunaltered in the High Street. The church of St James was built following his bequest, and is almost entirely 15th century, lending it a unity of style. There are several notable features inside, particularly the brassof Grevel and his wife, among the largest and oldest of Gloucestershire brasses.Another important local figure was Sir Baptist Hicks, a merchant banker, who built theMarket Hall in 1627 and the attractive row of almshouses near the church in 1612.

A Park in Chipping Campden. From the main street turn down Back Ends beside St.Catherine’s Church towards Hoo Lane. At the sharp right-hand bend, take the first turningon the left into Birdcage Walk. Continue ahead along the path to a road. Continue overthe road to the corner of a field. Take the path half-right uphill to the road.B Turn right and, after ¼mile (400m), take the path across the field signposted to BroadwayTower. At the road, turn left and continue to a junction.

2 The Kiftsgate Stone is a holed standing stone on the site of a former ‘moot site’ wherelocal people discussed business and dispensed justice. The Magna Carta was read fromthe stone as were the proclamations of monarchs, the last one being that of George III.

C Bear right and continue for ¼ mile (400m) to a bridleway on the right just after a right-hand bend.D Turn right and go downhill, keeping close to the right-hand field boundaries when thetrack emerges from the wood. Re-enter the woodland through a five bar gate and lookout for a stile and footbridge when a field comes into view on the right.E Cross the stile and head half-left across the field. Cross the stile and footbridge nearthe corner and turn right uphill, crossing a track, to a stile in the top corner of the field.F Continue in the same direction uphill across two fields and over a stile to a gate. Turnleft and join the road through a gate.G Turn right and, after 300yds (275m), take the path on the left to Dover’s Hill. Go straighton over the summit, crossing the stile ahead and continuing across a field to the road.

3 Whitsun Games were probably held on this hill as far back as Saxon times but it waslater the site of the famous Cotswold 'Olympick' Games, begun by Robert Dover in 1612.They were certainly not for the weak in body or spirit, involving such activities as wrestling, hand walking, shinkicking, and a particularly rough pursuit called singlestick fighting. Theoccasion became very popular and in the 1830s as many as 30,000 people attended.Unfortunately, the Games became unruly leading to demands for the event to be cancelled. The Games were stopped in 1853.They were revived in 1951 and now take place on the Friday after Spring Bank Holiday, although not all of the original events are included.

H Turn left and take the second path on the right (the Cotswold Way) back to ChippingCampden.

Excellent serviceand great qualityWhatever your window needs – from blinds and softfurnishings, from a single window repair toreplacement of all your windows and doors – NewBlinds andMisty2Clear Choices provide a ‘one stop’solution. The two companies are owned and managed

respectively by Nicki Cook and Tim Davis –partners in and outside of work for the last 15 yearswhen Nicki joined Tim at his former company,NewentWindows. The couple live in Cheltenhamand operate both businesses from the ChurchillIndustrial Estate off Church Road in Leckhamptonwhere they have excellent new showroom displaysto help customers decide on what’s best for theirhome. For those who struggle to visit during theweek, the showrooms will be open on Saturdaymornings (10am-1pm) throughout October.

‘Don’t compromise on quality’Nicki started New Blinds seven years ago and Tim

commenced trading as Misty2Clear a year later. Nowpossessing 15 years experience in windowaccessories, Nicki’s passion for delivering greatproducts and services is stronger than ever. NewBlinds’ product range now incorporates blinds, shutters, curtains, awnings, wallpaper, paints and softfurnishings.Nicki said: “The main reason we’ve grown as a

business is because we don’t compromise onquality. That’s not to say we’re expensive – far fromit, our prices are excellent. However, I makecertain the range of products we supply to customersis of a high standard – andwe employ our own fittersto ensure they are properly installed.”Sales strategy and service are two other aspects

Nicki cites as playing an important role in thecompany’s development. She commented: “Weconcentrate on listening to our customers so we canoffer appropriate advice that fits their individual needs. There’s no ‘hard sell’ and we don’t employ someof the ‘incentive’ sales tactics aimed at rushing peopleinto a decision. Great products, sensibly priced thatare installed by courteous professionals is what worksfor us.“These days I think people are aware that

g

nneewwbblliinnddss

Page 39: Oct 2011 Chelt

servicea qualityW genuine ‘offers’ are few and far between. If you can

‘save 50%’ on a blind, the chances are its originalprice was double what it should have been anyway.”With both partners heavily involved in supporting

each other’s business, it’s not surprising that Timshares the same principles in running Misty2Clear.He said: “We always look for the best solution forour customer.“Whenmeasuring up for New Blinds’ clients, Nicki

would occasionally notice that one of their doubleglazed units was foggy. She often found that whenshementioned it to them, they didn’t realise the unitscould be cost-effectively repaired or replaced – soMisty2Clear was created.“Customers were so happy with the quality and

price of our work in sorting out the odd window, they started to employ the company for replacementof all their windows, and sometimes doors too.”Recently re-branded as Misty2Clear Choices, the

company now involves itself in jobs ranging in pricefrom £25 to £30,000+. Without abandoning thelow cost service supplied by ‘Mr Misty’, Tim hasadded a couple of friends – ‘Mr Heritage’ and ‘MrEco’ – to better satisfy the demands in themarketplace (see their advert on the next page).

Great for the environmentThe Heritage range comes in over 300 colours

and, largely due to the slim and elegant profiles, resembles the look of traditional timber frames. The Eco range is both great for the environment

and, when it comes to heating bills, great on yourpocket too! As well as heat loss and condensationbeing reduced by the ‘Triple A’ sealed units, theacoustics of your rooms are much improved. There’s no doubting Tim and Nicki’s expertise in

their respective fields which, of course, is reassuringwhen making a purchase. However, it’s theirgenuine desire to use that experience to the bestadvantage of their customers that makes them a joyto deal with – no gimmicks, just a professional andextremely friendly service. Why not pop along to their showrooms and see

what’s available to improve your home – you won’tbe disappointed!

Sow BeansSow ʻAquadulce Claudiaʼ broad beans now for an earlycrop for next year. Plant seeds 20cm apart and 5cm deep. This variety comes to no harm even in a very hard winterand will romp away in the spring. As mentioned last month you can now sow sweet-peasready for next year. Soak them for a few hours in somewater to help them germinate, then sow 1.5cm deep inseed compost in a 13cmpot, several seeds perpot. Cover with glass orpolythene until the seedsgerminate and then standout in the garden in acold frame or unheatedgreenhouse to overwinter. You should finish plantingyour spring bulbs thismonth with the exception of Tulips which fare better ifplanted late October or even November to limit theirexposure to soil-borne diseases. Prepare the GroundOctober is a good time to prepare the ground for new fruittrees and bushes. If planting on heavy soil add plenty

of grit to ensure drainage isadequate. Work in plenty of well-rotted manure into each plantingposition and add a handful of slow release fertiliser when youplant the new trees. Fruit trees arereally becoming popular as theytake little looking after (unlikevegetables) and can provideenough fruit to fill the freezer touse all year round.

Replant your window boxesNow is a good time to empty your hanging baskets andreplant window boxes with winter pansies and primrosesto provide a show through the winter into spring. Pop in afew dwarf daffodils like ʻtete a teteʼ or ʻFebruary Goldʼ, orperhaps some Iris reticulata. It is nice if possible to matcha colour to your front door. Add some fresh young ivy andmaybe a small conifer or two. This year my hangingbaskets went wild – I planted then with the usual mixtureof plants but put in too many petunias and I have decidedalthough they looked spectacular they are really too muchwork with all the dead-heading so next year NO petunias! If you plant Amaryllis bulbs inside at intervals betweenOctober and January it is possible to get them bloomingfrom January to May. Pot newly bought bulbs in 10-15cmpots depending on the bulb size making sure that two-thirds of the bulb is poking out above the surface of thecompost. Water well and leave. Check the compost doesnot dry out completely before growth appears but donʼtwater too much or they will rot. Start to water regularlywhen the leaves start to grow. Put the plants in a sunnyposition at a temperature of 15-18 degrees C and theflowering stems should appear in a few weeks.

A GREAT new service for Heating Engineershas just opened in Cheltenham. Housing acomprehensive stock – from fibre washersand o-rings to heat exchangers, fans andPCBs, Cheltenham Boiler Spares (CBS) hasbeen structured to save customers time –enabling them to ‘get the job done’.Conveniently located just off Gloucester

Road at Vineyards Trading Estate, theindependent company is owned andmanaged by husband and wife team IanGodwin and Toril Larsen (pictured above)and their focus is on good ‘old fashioned’customer service. Toril said: “We aim toalleviate the frustration experienced byheating engineers (and their customers!)when job completion is delayed –

sometimes due to a simple washer not beingavailable locally. Our service is friendly, efficient and we further avoid frustrations forclients through effective communication. Wealso have an ‘in store’ database facility forpeople to look up part numbers, prices andcheck on availability.”

Stock replenished daily! The stock will be replenished on a daily

basis and, on the odd occasion they don’thave what you’re after, they will get amessage to you the moment your partsarrive – usually by 10am next day. CBS alsoholds a large Regin stock for gas safety reportpads, sealants, etc. as well as some shower, fire and cooker spares. Also, all unstocked

shower parts can be secured for ‘same daydelivery’ if ordered before 12 noon.Ian commented: “For engineers to operate

efficiently, being able to ring a supplier, getan answer on availability and collect partslocally is key.We stock hundreds of items thatthe town’s larger suppliers don’t, saving ourcustomers time previously spent travellingto the nearest specialist stockist in Gloucester.“We’re open to both the public and

trade customers and, although we’re in agreat, central location, we encourage peopleto telephone us first to check we’ve got whatthey‘re after. In the vast majority of cases, wecan give an immediate answer – enablingthem to save time and accurately inform theirown customers.”

Rob Hawkes set up Cotswold Mobile Valeting this summer toprovide a high quality service at times and locations to suit hiscustomers – so we thought we’d try him out!

Everything about the experience was impressive. Rob(pictured above) turned up when he said he would, heworked non-stop until the job was complete and the standardof finish (we went for the full valet) was excellent.

Other benefits of using Rob’s service were the environmentallyfriendly nature of the cleaning products used, and the fact hesupplies all his own water and power – making it a quick andhassle-free service for the customer.

Whether you’re at home or the office, getting the car ‘dealt’with while being able to do other things yourself is great – noneed to drive anywhere and great value for money.

Rob is extremely friendly and experienced in valeting all typesof vehicles including trucks, large vans, minibuses and even classiccars. Discounts are available for group deals – whether that‘sa set of family cars, or a small fleet of vehicles at one office. Healso gives automatic discounts for the over-60s.

Even if you only want your vehicle professionally valeted tomake it easier to sell, we thoroughly recommend CotswoldMobile Valeting – so why not give Rob a call?

Fantastic service– right on your doorstep!

Well, I am not sure what sort ofmonth you have had, a goodone I hope, but it has certainlybeen a challenge for your policeservice. The recent systematicthieving and violence committedby thousands of criminals in andaround our country hasnecessitated a response fromPolice Commanders and theimpact on front line response hasbeen difficult to manage at times, but manage we did.

In some respects the reactionfrom our country and from yourpolice has once again shownwhat a great country we live in,with the ‘broom brigade’ and theextra officers on the streets, forexample, showing these thievesthat we won’t accept their criminal ways. I don’t know about you,but I for one am sick to the back teeth of watching these sort ofpeople commit crime and get away with their chosen lifestyle andI applaud the sentences they have received recently, more of thesame I say!

And the obvious question to follow from you should be as towhat we are doing about the criminality in Cheltenham and I willtell you in a moment. Crime in Cheltenham has been reducing yearon year for some time and that trend is continuing. The only realproblem we face is the continuing issue with thieves going, uninvited, into peoples homes and stealing. Operation Eagle isdedicated to combating this and they are starting to show inroadsinto the problem.

A constant discussion that I have with my staff and my bossesis about the balance we have to strike in reacting to problems orbeing proactive to stop problems happening. A perfect example ofhow being proactive works is with Cheltenham’s night timeeconomy. As a young bobby I always seemed to be fighting andwrestling with drunken men on a Friday and Saturday night. As muchfun as that was, it really wasn’t a good use of resourcesand the criminal justice system. Nowadays, we stop problems beforethey arise, working in partnership with the council and with thenightclubs, planning to get things right before they go wrong. It’snot an exact science and we sometimes get it wrong but thereduction in violence in our Town centre argues that we are doingit pretty well.

In order to keep the pressure on proactivity, all my staff havean ongoing ‘project’, all designed to make a difference and makelife a little easier and better for us all and keep the pressure on thievesand bullies. An example of these projects is Operation Urination;to catch people using the town as a toilet on nights out. We offerthem an £80 fine or an invite to revisit the scene of the crime andwash their ablutions away with a bucket & mop, all designed to bea little embarrassing and teach a valuable lesson. I was warned againstre-introducing the stocks but the mop & bucket seems to work ok.

Other projects revolve around drug dealing, shoplifting, litter, parking, Halloween, the March races, the Honeybourne line andmany many others. Hopefully this will reassure you that we are notjust rushing around answering 999 calls but are trying to think logicallyand intelligently about how we use our resources.

I hope you have a pleasant autumn, keep warm and lockyour doors!
