September 2011 Greetings too all. SKEET TRAPS: The management committee has approved the purchase of a pair of brand new Laporte traps for the skeet towers. The cost is NZD7500.00 + GST and though we would have rather purchased a domestic product the local traps were twice the price. We will order the traps immediately as there is a ten week wait for deliv- ery ex Europe. The mean time Jeff, Lee and Ivan will nurse the existing machines along to keep us running. RANGE LIGHTING: The committee is also working towards improvements in the lighting on both the shotgun and rifle ranges. This is to be ‘signed’ off also and best I can understand we need a fatter power cord. CHRISTMAS SHOOT: The date for the Christmas shoot has been set by the management committee for Sunday December 4th. Format to follow. RANGE OFFICER TRAINING SESSION: Graeme Barber will be conducting NZ Mountain Safety Council NZMSC) RO training at the club November 6th from 9am until 4pm. Business as usual and no range interruptions expected. RANGE NOISE REDUCTION INITIATIVE: For those who have visited the rifle range recently you will be aware of the on going work that Anthony and Reg have been undertaking. In addition to the working bee adventures of last month, at which time rubber underlay was glued to the concrete block walls of the shooting bays, the boys have been building three walls immediately behind the shooting positions. These walls will perform the task of blocking some, it not most, of the rewards noise from muzzle blasts. Two walls sit where formerly the red bars were located and further back overlapping the gap between these walls is a third wall to semi enclose the area. The walls are to be 150mm thick and lined with noise absorbing ma- terial (shredded long suffering husbands???). In addition to this the middle sections of all three walls at view height will be dou- ble glazed with 6mm acrylic material of a see threw nature so full view of the range will still be possible. In real terms the sound baffling walls will have huge windows in them and with a sheet of 6mm ‘Perspex’ either side and a void in the middle the noise levels will still be reduced. Good work there gents. Not bad for a couple of old fullas ah? Still to be completed are the three remaining blast funnels in bays 1, 2 and 4. The funnel in bay 3 makes a HUGE difference to muzzle reports by reflecting the sound down range. Keep your powder dry. Jeff. Range calendar and events. Reloading Manual Review—By Matthew McCallum-Clark

Nosler (6th edition - 2007) A fairly standard manual, with reloading instructions, load data and basic ballistics. More pictures and tries to be more friendly, with emphasis on the Nosler family business, and each cartridge being introduced by a guest writer. Covers pretty much all the “normal” and modern cartridges, including all the short magnums. No reduced load info. Load data seems a little hotter than others. Typical .308 Win data – 150grn Velocities = 2570-3000fps Number of powders covered = 10 Lyman (49th edition - 2008) A larger soft-cover manual with more general reloading informa-tion in the front, as well as load data for both jacketed and cast bullets. Articles on general stuff, plus cast bullets, gun cleaning, handloading for old rifles, premium bullets and reloading the WSM and WSSM cartridges. There is no ballistic information in this manual. As it is updated every few years, most modern cartridges are in-cluded. As usual, each cartridge starts with a historical/technical summary and dimension drawing. Typical .308 Win data – 150grn Velocities = 2450-3000fps Number of powders covered = 15 Hornady (8th edition - 2010) Similar in structure and content to the Speer and Nosler manuals (with a focus on Hornady equipment). Only just released, so cov-ers all the latest developments in cartridges, plus some recent powders. Very little ballistic data – their website is a better source for this. No reduced load info. Similar load data format to the Sierra manual, with a technical/historical info, plus a table of powders and loads covering the same velocity spread. The loads are generally a little lighter in this manual than others. Typical .308 Win data – 150grn Velocities = 2300-2800fps Number of powders covered = 10

Sierra (5th edition - 2003) Undoubtedly one of the “standard” manuals. Ring-binder format, with good reloading instructions, lots of Sierra bullet information and application suggestions, most cartridges covered and detailed ballistic information. Sierra don’t update as often as most (this latest one was published in 2003), so some of the more modern cartridges are not included e.g. only the larger calibre (7mm+) short magnums are there. Each cartridge starts with a historical/technical summary and di-mension drawing. Typical load data is shown as a table for each Sierra bullet weight, with an average of about 10 powders that cover the same velocity spread. No reduced load info. Typical .308 Win data – 150grn Velocities = 2500-2900fps Number of powders covered = 21 Speer (14th edition - 2007) Not much positive to say about this one. Is pretty standard in terms of reloading instructions, cartridges covered and very basic ballistic data - the ballistic data is much better from the Hornady website or www.jbmballistics.com. Has articles on “cowboy ac-tion” and progressive reloading. Speer is part of the “ATK” group, which includes RCBS, CCI and Federal, so the Speer manual pretty shamelessly plugs the group’s offerings. Has reduced load info, but only for Accurate Arms pow-ders (which I haven’t come across in NZ). The loads are generally lighter in this manual, with velocities often being 50-150fps lower others. Typical .308 Win data – 150grn Velocities = 2325-2919fps Number of powders covered = 14 Good Websites for Load Data ADI (www.adi-powders.com.au) Hodgdon (www.hodgdon.com) - very comprehensive, with Hodg-

don, Dupont/IMR and Winchester powders. Vhitavouri (www.lapua.com)
