Fergus Believes In Santa ClausSanta Claus is real and the town of

Fergus is celebrating with exciting activities and community events in

support of Groves Hospital Foundation with the I Believe In Santa Claus campaign.

The campaign allows merchants and residents to work together to raise funds for much needed hospital equipment and resources. Merchants around Fergus will carry I Believe In Santa Claus pins which can be purchased by donation with all funds going to the Groves Hospital Foundation. In addition merchants will be offering items at special prices with a portion of the purchase price going to the Foundation.

The I Believe In Santa Claus Campaign is a partnership between the Fergus BIA, Vision Theatre Productions and Groves Hospital Foundation. Each winter Vision Theatre Productions puts on a play in support of Groves. This year, the company will be putting on a production of the classic story Miracle on 34th Street. The three organizations decided to build on this by creating a program that involves the entire community in the fundraising effort.

“It’s the perfect opportunity to spread the joy of Christmas while supporting Groves Hospital which is vital part of our community,” said Vision Theatre Productions Executive Producer Fred Morris.

The success of the campaign will be tracked on the I Believe In Santa meter which will be located in the downtown core. As more funds are raised, the meter will show how much Fergus believes in Santa Claus. Two cheques will be presented to the Foundation, the first happening on December 13th at the Fergus Grand Theatre during the performance of Vision Theatre Productions Miracle on 34th Street. The second will happen before Christmas at Groves Hospital.

“It’s exciting that Vision Theatre and the Fergus business community have come together to support Groves. We are still

fundraising for new equipment including an Ultrasound machine and a Giraffe baby warmer/incubator. Our goal is $572,5600 and this community event is one great way to support best patient care” said Groves Hospital Foundation’s Executive Director Sherri Sutherland.

A website and social media pages have also been set up to share this exciting and fun event. Stay in the know about what’s happening with I Believe In Santa Claus.

Get A Grip On WinterFor some of us the thoughts of equip-

ping our vehicle with winter tires only enters our minds when we feel

ourselves skidding into a curb or ditch on a set of badly worn treads or on all season tires that are not capable of handling our harsh Canadian winter conditions.

Years ago “snow” tires were knobby and noisy but were made for driving in the snow. However, they had poor traction in dry and wet conditions. With the advent of better roads and better snow removal, the all-sea-son tire was born which claimed to provide good traction for all weather and driving conditions. While new, all-season tires with their keen edges do provide better traction than tires that have been in service for a climate cycle, they still don’t compare to the capabili-ties of winter tires. Winter treads may be narrower with larger tread spacing, which improves traction by allowing the tire to rid itself of snow as it rolls. The wider tread spaces increase the pounds per square inch contact with the road giving it a clearer traction bite. A low-pro performance tire provides good traction on bare pavement but on cold slippery surfaces, the pounds per square inch are lower, due to their wider tread contact surface, giving extremely poor trac-tion.

Winter tires are made of specially formulated rubber compounds that grip well not only on ice and snow but also cold, dry, wet or slushy driving conditions. With this improved cold weather per-formance, why don’t tire manufacturers make all-season tires with the same compounds? There is a trade-off. The softer, more flex-ible winter treads tend to wear more quickly than an all-season tire. Basically, all-season rubbers are designed to operate in temperatures slightly above freezing and higher. At zero they tend to stiffen and lose gripping power causing the potential loss of traction on icy or snowy roads. Winter tires are designed to operate at slightly above freezing and lower. (Remember the Rule of 7s for your tires. The rule of 7 is that when weather is constantly colder than 7 degrees it’s time to change to winter tires. And in the spring when temperatures

are constantly above 7 degrees put your all seasons back on.)

The traditional wisdom when almost all vehicles were rear wheel drive (RWD) was to mount two snow tires on the rear drive wheels. The rationale was that this would provide the best forward traction. However, the driving dynamics of front wheel drive (FWD) vehicles, in conditions of poor trac-tion are very different. Vehicles equipped with FWD need both linear (forward) trac-tion, and lateral (side to side) traction, par-ticularly on the rear wheels, to prevent rear end spin out (the largest reason for winter

accidents results from loss of lateral control of a car on ice and snow). To help maintain con-trol and stability of your vehicle in icy condi-tions, it is now recommended to install winter

tires on both front and rear. Avoid mixing tires with different tread patterns, internal construction or size, unless specified by the ve-hicle manufacturer.

Making the change from summer treads to winter treads can be simplified by purchasing a “Winter Tire & Wheel Package”. By keeping a dedicated set of winter tires mounted on dedicated rims, you’re ready to bolt them on when they’re needed saving the cost of mounting and balancing them every spring and fall. When shop-ping for winter tires look for the peaked mountain with snowflake symbol signifying they meet specific snow traction performance requirements and have been designed specifically for use in severe snow conditions.

We continually receive positive feedback from customers who install winter tires. They experience safer handling of their vehicle in all winter conditions, while driving defensively.

All these items individually may not seem significant but they all contribute to safe, worry free winter traveling.

Your RRSP Annual Review 2012-13

The Canadian government regulates the Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) program, allowing it to have special

tax benefits as you save for your retirement. Annual RRSP contributions can reduce the amount of income tax you pay in the year of your contribution. These monies invested annually grow on a tax-deferred basis, and tax is only paid at the time of withdrawal.

RRSP Benefit SnapshotYou Pay Less Tax Contributions to an RRSP can

be deducted from your taxable income allowing you to pay less tax on the money you make, which can leave you more money to invest for retirement. After you contribute to an RRSP, you can claim an equivalent deduction from taxes you owe to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Many people use the tax saved to make an RRSP contribution for next year or pay off after-tax debt such as credit cards.

Your Investments Grows Tax-Free Your RRSP investments accumulate within the plan tax-free, as do any addition to your contributions, including capital gains, interest, dividends, and any other growth via dividends or distributions paid out on an investment fund. The longer your money stays sheltered from the taxman, the greater the tax-free accumulative earning power of your investment. However, taxation occurs once income is withdrawn from your RRSP.

You can Contribute to your Spouse’s RRSP A Spousal RRSP can ensure future retirement income is split between two spouses.

This may help to reduce a higher tax bracket when you have more taxable income in your retirement years. By allocating future taxable income as evenly as possible between you and your spouse, you can aim to provide both spouses with similar retirement incomes, referred to as “income splitting”. The contributor to a spousal RRSP benefits from the tax deduction while building a retirement nest egg for the spouse. Amounts withdrawn from a spousal RRSP will be considered part of your spouse’s taxable income, insofar as you

have not contributed any amount to a spousal plan in the current or the two preceding years.

Why is it important to save for retirement? An RRSP can give you the financial resources

you need for a comfortable retirement that will meet your lifestyle requirements. Many Canadians are living for 30 years during retirement with a need to provide an income.

Next month, we’ll talk about how much you can contribute to your RRSP, and the deadline for contributions to affect your 2012 taxes.

If you can’t wait until next issue, and want information now, call us at 519-265-5126 or email Trevor at [email protected].

Homeopathy for your gut flora

Sometimes a stressor in life - perhaps a serious illness, a physical trauma or an unsettling emotional event - can throw the body off course

to the extent that it never fully recovers. In homeopathic circles we call that a NBWS (never been well since) event. For women it can include puberty, pregnancy and menopause. One of the things often affected in a big way is the gut flora.

Our bowels are colonized by a myriad of bacilli, cocci and coliform organisms. In health there is a symbiotic relationship between these parasites and our bowel. For example, some of them produce vitamin K, some help transform urea into amino acids. Even E-coli is considered non-pathogenic in the healthy bowel, and it serves a useful function. But continued health requires equilibrium in the colonization of the bowel. Any change in the host which affects the intestinal mucosa can result in not only a change in the population distribution, but also a change in behaviour of some of these organisms (a survival mechanism), making them pathogenic. An imbalance in the gut flora can result in an inflammatory state of the bowel, food sensitivities or allergies, and a change in intestinal permeability. The final result may be a systemically toxic body.

In the 1930’s, Dr. Edward Bach (the same one who developed the Bach Flower Remedies) was largely responsible for developing the “bowel nosodes”. John Paterson, a homeopath and bacteriologist, was also instrumental. Often, a patient, who has a history of severe antibiotic use followed by digestive difficulties,

will develop a “block” to health. In other words, no matter how well we choose a homeopathic remedy for that individual it won’t have a lasting effect until the gut flora is brought back to equilibrium. The bowel nosodes can unblock the path to health, allowing a well-selected remedy to restore health fully.

Note that the use of colon cleanses and probiotics can help support health, but they don’t seem to re-establish the proper balance in the gut flora.

Some health issues that come to mind are candidiasis, heartburn, chronic diarrhea and other long term digestive

disorders. But many other situations may also call for it - especially where there are allergies or a feeling of toxicity. Chronic ailments such as arthritis, eczema, psoriasis, susceptibility to infections, fatigue and a lowered tolerance for alcohol can all be indicators of a bowel imbalance.

Celtic Shoppe & Used Bookstore in Downtown Fergus?

The Bookery combines a Celtic Shoppe with an old world inspired Used Bookstore. They are located in

downtown Fergus on St. Andrew Street directly across from the public library. December 1st will mark their one year anniversary.

The Celtic ShoppeThe Bookery’s Celtic Shoppe carries

traditional Celtic, Irish and Scottish jewellery in Sterling Silver. Whether you are looking for the distinctive Luckenbooth, a Scottish love token, or the traditional Irish symbol of love, the Claddagh, you will find many designs to choose from. You will also find other traditional pieces including the Celtic Cross, Tree of Life, the Trinity, Triskele, Triquetra, Celtic Dragons and Fairies in pendants, earrings and rings.

For centuries, Celtic symbols and signs held incredible power for the ancient Celts in every way of life. The Celtic interlace is believed to represent the repeated crossings of both spiritual and physical paths throughout our lives. The never ending path representing the

continuance of the spirit in life, love, faith and death. These traditional interlace Celtic knot designs are offered in jewellery, cards, leather journals, decor items & wares. Books, incense, oils, candles, runes, oracles, tarot, gems, stones and crystals are also in store. Knowledgeable staff is available for guidance and assistance.

The BookstoreThe Bookery’s Bookstore offers thousands

of fine used, some rare and many out of print books both fiction and non. In addition to contemporary fiction paperbacks the selection includes an impressive offering of collected works, literary classics, philosophy, history, art, theology, mythology and books of local/regional interest.

Buying used books makes good sense according to owner Debb Greer. Used bookstores offer readers a place to recycle their books in exchange for other books. This keeps good books out of landfill, moves books along for others to enjoy, helps increase the reading budget and provides affordable reading options for families. The

Bookery encourages readers to bring their books into the store for credit which can be used towards the purchase of other used books. Cash is paid for specialty books, collections and estates. The Bookery also accepts donations and does donate books to Prison Library programs.

Used books make thoughtful, meaningful gifts. Beautifully bound vintage leather books, collected works of classic literary authors, a specialty bound copy of a favorite book or a long sought after rarity ~ can be the solution for that hard to buy for person on your list. A gift certificate is another good choice for the bibliophile on your list and can provide them many hours of joyful treasure hunting in the new year.

Foot pain and lower limb pain can cut into our daily walk that is so important for staying healthy and keeping the

body weight under control.

The majority of us have a tendency to “ride out” pain to see if it will disappear on its own. If pain remains, we first resort to trying medication, off the shelf supports and changing footwear. If these remedies are not effective, the rest of the body may be affected due to compensation.

For example, with a condition called plantar fasciitis, which manifests itself as heel pain (a.k.a. heel spurs), pain due to compensation is very common. Unknowingly, you may have been turning the affected foot out (inverting, supinating) to relieve pain in the heel. This in turn may cause ankle, shin, knee, hip and lower back pain. Because compensation for pain is often not conscious (Walking is an automatic movement), these other pains may “creep up” on you. It may be time to have a biomechanical evaluation to see if you may require orthotic support, footwear or just good advice.

Custom-made orthoses and footwear are available at Fit to Walk at 135 St. David S. at “The Olde Livery”. Clinical evaluation, casting, manufacturing and fittings are all

performed at our on-site lab and clinic.

Call Bob Witte, your local Certified Pedorthist at 519-843-7979 for flexible appointment hours and a no-obligation consultation. Services are recognized by major insurance providers.

“I tried the rest, then went with the best”

The Fergus-Elora Driving School has earned a reputation as Centre Wellington’s

premiere driving school. They have a group of well trained and experienced instructors which, over the years, has translated into superior results for their students. In fact, their students boast a 95% road-test-success rate. Students like Caitlyn Craig (pictured

with owner Paul Coombe) took lessons at a couple of other driving schools prior to taking lessons at The Fergus-Elora Driving School. She says the quality of driving instruction was much better at The Fergus-Elora Driving School. And now she has her licence! Paul Coombe and his staff are widely regarded as the most

patient and caring with their students. This allows students like Caitlyn to flourish and gain confidence on the road. Paul teaches students good driving habits, emergency maneuvers (including head-on collision avoidance), city driving experience in Guelph and 401 freeway entrance procedure at the Fergus-Elora Driving School. These are all skills that help young people become

confident and vigilant drivers. The classroom component of their

course emphasizes developing good driving habits, while the road course puts emphasis on defensive driving - gaining the ability to avoid even those collisions which would be the fault of the other driver.Book now for one of their upcoming

courses. In Fergus, there’s a four-day Christmas Break course December 31st, January 2nd, January 3rd and January 4th. In Drayton, there’s a Saturday Course that will take place on

The Benefits of Open Fit Hearing AidsWard Hearing Centre would like to

introduce you to the latest in hearing aid technology - “Open-Fit” hearing

aids.A large number of people over the age of 55

with hearing loss have what is known as a “high frequency hearing loss” where the important and sensitive High-pitch speech sounds like “f”, “s” and “th” are not clearly audible unless presented at an “aided” increased level of volume. These same people often have normal or near-normal hearing in the low and mid-pitched sounds of speech (such as vowel sounds and other speech sounds like “z”, “v”, “j”, “m”, “d”, “b”, and “r”).

This is where Open-Fit Hearing Aids can make a real difference. By amplifying the required sounds, and not just amplifying everything, we are able to hear far more clearly and naturally. This helps us to overcome the problem commonly described as “I can hear that someone is talking, I just can’t understand what they’re saying to me”.

Far More Natural SoundThe brain usually processes natural sounds best, and that’s where open-

fit hearing aid technology helps the most. When the hearing deficiency is in the high Hz (frequency or high “pitch”) area of our hearing, open-fit hearing aids will work to only amplify the type of sounds that need it while allowing the natural Low and Mid-pitch sounds to reach the eardrum uninhibited. Only open-fit hearing aids can accomplish this. The majority of other styles that “close off” the ear canal leaving only a small vent opening require re-amplification of the blocked low and mid-pitched sounds, causing speech and other sounds to be less natural sounding.

Cosmetically AppealingAnother advantage of Open-fit hearing aids is they are very cosmetically

appealing. Very little of the hearing instrument is visible, especially

when viewed from the front. Even those who are “follicly-challenged” or have just a little bit of hair on their head will find that Open-Fit instruments are remarkably discreet since the majority of the hearing aid is hidden by the outer ear.

Improved Noise ReductionIn addition to the natural-sounding characteristics

of enhanced High frequency (Hz) amplification, the capabilities of today’s intelligent open-fit instruments allow sounds to be electronically

manipulated to filter out much of the “hubbub” of unwanted background noise. Whether you’re at a social gathering, or walking down the street, the hearing instruments are constantly sampling the sound of your environment to enhance your listening experience and ability to hear properly. The sophisticated micro-chip in todays’ hearing aids can distinguish the difference between much of the noise you don’t want to hear, and the sounds which you do need to hear. With the busy Holiday season approaching, it’s important to remember that hearing well in social situations large and small is especially important.

Am I A Candidate? You might be wondering: Am I a candidate for this type of hearing

aid? Contact Brian Ward from Ward Hearing Centre to have a no-cost complete hearing assessment that will determine if there is a need for hearing aids, and if so, what style of hearing instrument is best suited to your lifestyle and needs. Whatever your assessment results, you can rest assured knowing that the caring, professional service at Ward Hearing Centre will treat you very well with only your best interests in mind.

Remember - “An unaided hearing loss is far more noticeable than a hearing aid”. Ward Hearing Centre is located in Unit #2, 135 St. David Street S. (inside the Old Livery Bulding) in downtown Fergus. Free parking is available directly behind the Old Livery across from the Brew House. Call (519) 843-4327.

Changing Financial PerspectivesIt’s the time of year everyone is

starting to think about winter and snow. My husband has

already put the snow tires on his vehicle to prepare for the upcoming winter. We all do things to prepare ourselves in life; planning for the big trip, the kids going off to college, Christmas, Easter. I find it ironic when I meet with people and I find they do more planning of what they’re having for dinner that week, then they do for their finances. We live in an immediate gratification era and when it comes to planning for the future most people think they have lots of time to save, to plan.

I have clients we’ll call them Charlie Brown age 45 and Lucy age 42. They have a successful business with extra cash flow and three children. They’ve started saving in their RRSP’s and RESP’s for their children. They feel they have a great start to their financial plan and they have mortgage insurance through their financial institution. They are too busy to meet and to

be honest they’re leery to meet as they don’t want to be sold.

After I meet with clients, the first thing out of their mouth is why didn’t I meet with you years ago. This couple has a lot of hidden cash that they don’t realize. Having a plan and a financial analysis can literally save thousands of dollars over the life time. Right away this client has potential for saving over 30% by restructuring how they are saving for their retirement. By working with this client and showing them ways they can use their money differently

they add more to their savings for retirement, reduce the amount they’re

spending on life insurance and taxes and free up cash for lifestyle needs and wants.

Plan, protect, invest, and grow.

Once again the cold and flu season is upon us and many people will be coughing, sneezing, dealing

with sinus problems, fever, ear infections and feel more like staying inside rather than carry on with normal daily activities. Some people will scramble for any possible remedy that could help them or their children win the battle against these dreaded enemies.

So how does seeing a chiropractor help with colds and flu? First of all chiropractic doesn’t treat cold or flu; chiropractic promotes improved body function which creates high natural resistance. Natural resistance is the only reason why your cold “goes away” rather than lasting for weeks or months.

Chiropractic helps raise natural resistance to disease, by removing a serious interference to your proper body function: vertebral subluxations (spinal misalignments). Vertebral subluxations lower your natural resistance to disease by putting pressure on and unbalancing your nervous system.

While no one is entirely immune to a cold and the flu, it is true that people with healthy spines tend to have a greater level of resistance to the germs that cause these illnesses. Recent research demonstrates the important role that our nervous system plays.

Dr. David Felton M.D. Ph.D. explains, “nerve fibers go into virtually every organ of the immune system and form direct contacts with the immune system cells … if you took the nerves or nerve flow away …. you virtually stop the

immune responses in their tracks.”Dr. Candace Pert Ph.D., a prominent

neuro-immunologist, explains that these immune centers are found in the spinal cord within the spinal column. Knowing this, we are now beginning to understand how and why specific chiropractic care works to remove

nerve interference and greatly aids our immune response.

Here are some things you can do if you get a cold or flu.1. Rest. All of your body’s healing happens when you sleep.2. Get plenty of fluids.3. Seek out chiropractic care. Studies show a 200%

improvement in immune system function following a chiropractic adjustment.

So supercharge your immune system with chiropractic naturally and win the battle against colds and flu.

Water saving tips from Aquarius Water Treatment in Elora

While Canada has one of the safest water supplies in the world, there are a number of factors that can affect the taste, appearance, hardness and overall

safety of household water – including everything from a heavy rainfall causing excessive agricultural runoff to the presence of lead or copper pipes in your home.

Aquarius Water Treatment in Elora recommends having your water tested if you have any concerns about quality. Owner Simon Davies can also show you how to save money on your home water bills with their Aquamaster

Water Softeners. He offers these water saving tips for your home...

TIP 1Pay attention to the amount of water your water softener

uses for regeneration. Several manufacturers do not provide

this information up front due to a long regeneration time that results in heavy water usage. An AquaMaster water softener, at factory setting, will use as little 13.9 gallons to regenerate in as little as 20 minutes. Competitive brands can take up to 2 hours or longer, and commonly use 60 to 120 gallons of water!

TIP 2Using a larger capacity softener is likely to be more efficient

and use less water over time as it will regenerate less often.A licensed plumber, Simon can help you with infloor

heating, gas and electric water heaters, air lines, pressure tanks for wells and anything to do with plumbing renovations (small jobs too!). Aquarius Water Treatment has a wide range of contacts in the plumbing industry, so if you are looking for a part or fixture, come into the store and let them help you find it.

Kurt’s inspiring words of wisdomMeow, folks. So, it seems Dr. Kayte is a little busy this week, so I thought,

since I pretty well live on top of her computer keyboard, I would write this month’s article. Down side, I really needed some material… Should I discuss how I spend my days, or what candies the office staff like the best? Should I talk about the awesomeness of catnip? Mmmm, catnip....Or maybe about that soft spot under my chin that really needs a scratch? The only answer was to surf the net for ideas… and look! I grabbed the mouse and found one, or rather 14. Purrfect! It is no surprise to me that cats from around the world have inspired words of wisdom, so let me share them with you. Enjoy! – Kurt, the clinic cat

7. You will always be lucky if you know how to make friends with strange cats. - American proverb

8. If you want to know the character of a man, find out what his cat thinks of him. - Anonymous proverb

Buy one Hot Dinner Take-Out meal, get a second at half price

Grand River Caterers Inc. would like

to update our loyal, interested and prospective customers as to what we have been up to and where we plan to go. Starting back in mid-August we became the sole food provider for a major International competition, that ran for four weeks over a six week period. This catering job required eight staff members on site working ten to twelve hour days and two to three staff back at the shop putting in twelve to fourteen hour days, preparing product for the show and trying to keep up with our regular corporate catering commitments, weddings and the like.

The New owners of Grand River Caterers (Kelly and Todd Ricketts) are close to entering their fourth year of ownership, and are realizing that although the business is constantly growing, how important it is to keep a balance. It is great to grow, but you cannot neglect the customers and clients who have supported and got you where you are today.

In addition to renovating the storefront space, we have made a renewed commitment to the product and service we provide from our shop. We are committed to being open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm, and now have these hours posted. We have placed reheating instructions on our pre-cooked frozen items for your convenience. We have also started selling our chicken pot pies, beef and mushroom, beef and kidney pies and tourtieres unbaked. The fillings are all cooked, but the pasty is not. We believe this will produce a better product for you at home. This will prevent dried out fillings and the chance of over cooking or burning the pastry while reheating. We have attached proper cooking instructions on each item.

We are also expanding our sweet selection to

include; assorted fruit pies, pecan pie, key lime pie (when available), chocolate chai cheesecake, chocolate brownie caramel cheesecake, assorted scones and Patti Bird’s famous butter tarts.

We recently hired a new chef at Grand River Caterers, Jeff O’Neill, who graduated from the Stratford Chef School, and has extensive experience cooking and with food and beverage

management at the Delta hotel in Kitchener. It is with this great addition to the Grand River Caterers team, that we can now confidently begin our Hot Dinner Take-Out service. This new experienced set of hands in our kitchen allows us the time and creativity needed to produce the quality and variety of meals you have come to enjoy from Grand River Caterers. Moving forward we plan to offer two different entrée items

a night along with a starch and vegetable side-dish.

In an effort to say thank you for your patience and understanding and to lure you in to see and taste what we have to offer, for the month of November we will be offering a special on our Hot Dinner Take-Out meals. If you buy one Hot Dinner Take-Out meal, you can get a second one at half price. We produce the menus on a two week schedule and email them out to our customers, as well as post them at the shop. We also send out daily reminders to let you know what we will be offering that evening. Should you wish to add your name to our email list please contact us at; 519-846-2757 or [email protected].

And just an aside, remember that Christmas is just around

the corner, so please think of Grand River Caterers for any and all of your corporate or personal party catering needs. We book up fast.

More snow expected this year Last year, Centre Wellington

enjoyed one of its best winters on record. The winter was not

so wintry with warmer days and not very much snow. What do you think will happen this year?

Most of us are anticipating Mother Nature to bounce back with a vengeance. With this in mind, Bob Van Zeyl from Pro Lawn Care has extended his October special until November 30th. Pay only $400 and enjoy a clear driveway until April 2013. That’s less than $100 per month.

Pro Lawn Care’s crews hit the streets early in the morning to start clearing driveways, sometimes even beating the street plows! In the event that the street plow fills in the end of a client’s lane after it’s been plowed, they can simply call or email and Pro Lawn Care

will send an operator back to clear it within an hour at no extra charge.

“Our clients basically own us for the winter”, Bob jokes.

Unlike other snowplow companies who focus on large parking lots, Pro Lawn Care specializes in residential snow plowing and

has built their business with that in mind. Everything from our trained, uniformed, friendly staff equipped with detailed work orders for each client, to our tractor/blower combination with GPS, Pro Lawn Care is capable of getting through anything old man winter throws at us.

Their snow removal package also makes a great Christmas gift! Their rate is based on clearing a residential lane-way with unlimited visits. Consider Pro Lawn Care’s snow removal service for your business or commercial location as well. For more information, call Bob at 519-787-LAWN (5296).

Are your Christmas decorations looking a little worse for the wear? After years spent in closets,

basements, or storage sheds, Christmas wreaths and ornaments start to lose their luster.

Fortunately, Darlene Gray, the owner of Grand Events in Fergus, has the answer for you. On Saturday, November 10th and Saturday, November 17th, visit Grand Events’ 130 St. Patrick Street location for a special class on how to spruce up your old Christmas decorations. The class will go from 1 to 2:30 p.m both days. Call and book your seat 519-843-7700.

Rent your holiday dishesUsing paper plates at your annual holiday party is wasteful, and

not environmentally friendly. Instead, rent your dishes from Grand

Dish rental is just one of the services Grand Events offers, to ease the stress of holiday entertaining. They also rent tables, chairs, dinnerware, glassware, cutlery, linens,

centerpieces, and backdrops – they even have a fully-decorated Christmas tree! And their rental fee includes setting up and taking down all decorations and equipment. Think of them for all your big parties and events!

Roxanne Beale is the owner of Roxanne’s Reflections in downtown Fergus. It’s a place where book lovers

are invited to connect with others through author events and book clubs that take place every month at her store.

On Friday, November 9th at 7 pm, “The Precious Seeds” by Hugh Templin is set to be released. This novel tells the stories of Wellington County’s earliest settlers from a manuscript that lay hidden for over 40 years. This is a great book for those who have an interest tracing their roots back to the Scottish pioneers or anyone who enjoys Canadian Historical Fiction. All are welcome to meet Hugh Templin’s grandsons and to hear excerpts from the novel.

On Saturday, November 17th from 11 am to 1 pm, Lisa Dalrymple, a local children’s book author, will release “If It’s No Trouble...A Big Polar Bear”. For Christmas, the main character Natalie, wants

a remote control scooter, some candy and a big polar bear. But a fun-loving bear as a pet? He’s very big and always hungry. How will Natalie ever convince the grown-ups that, despite all his shenanigans, a polar bear really is no trouble? Bring the kids to Roxanne’s, enjoy a craft and hear Lisa read from her book on the 17th.

Friday, November 23rd is Black Friday. Roxanne’s will be open extended hours from 7 am to 9 pm. It will be a Double Reward Club Points day, so get your holiday shopping done

Definition Fitness – it is all about making fitness achievable.

We know that moving is good for us and we know we should exercise and

improve our level of fitness. Why? Well, a number of reasons. Exercise has a positive impact on our general health, on our energy levels and mood. It reduces our risk of myriad of diseases, from breast cancer all the way to diabetes. It improves our cardiovascular health, and our mental health. It has been linked to a reduction in Alzheimers risk, as well as a reduction in the risk of dementia. It makes us feel good (ok, maybe not during, but after…). Exercise can be social too, allowing us to connect with people we otherwise might never have met. And yet, the idea of exercise can be a little scary. After all, what constitutes “exercise” and “fitness”?

Definition Fitness is here to help you sort that out. We often hear our new members say “I was afraid to come to a gym” and “I was worried I would be the only person who was out of shape”. And after they have been in to try us out, they realize that Definition Fitness is a friendly place where the service team greets you by name, and is ready to help you make ideal choices. And guess what? All of our members are just like you! We have all shapes and sizes, all experience levels. Even those who consider themselves to be out of shape are pleased to find things they can be successful with and feel good about. Everyone gets what they need!

New to exercise? Don’t know what to do when you come in?

No problem – we have a program for you (maybe Group Active – a little bit of everything in one hour, divided into 20 minute bites). Are you more experienced and looking for a “good butt kicking”? We have group personal training sessions that will have you working hard, and yelling for more. Are you looking for a good dose of fun to keep exercise interesting? Maybe it’s time to try Group Groove. Does the idea of working out in front of people scare the bejeepers out of you? Perhaps you need some one on one attention in a training session, during a time when fewer people are in the club.

You name it, we can do it…In keeping with our purpose of Creating a

Community in Motion, we are excited to announce a new program that is launching in January of 2013. It is called “R30”. This 30 minute indoor cycling class gives those new to exercise or to indoor cycling an opportunity to develop cycling skills in a shorter time period than our regular Group Ride classes (they are an hour). The workout is effective and achievable for all fitness levels. Motivating instructors and great music help you get through the workout –and you will be surprised at how quickly time will fly!

Come see what Definition Fitness has to offer, and find what moves you. Why not try us out? Enjoy 30 days for $30 and discover your definition of fitness. We are located in the Old Quarry Commons, 294 Mill St East Elora, just across from the Elora Quarry. You can also find us online at www.definition-fitness.ca, or like us on Facebook! Of course, we are happy to talk to you as well - call 519-846-8733.

Avoiding Instalment Interest a Good Investment

If you have income that is not subject to regular tax withholdings then you are probably well aware of Canada’s tax instalment system. Specifically the rules state that

if your tax balance owing (not including instalments made) exceeded $3,000 in either 2010 or 2011 and you expect to be in a similar position for 2012, then instalment payments were or are required on March 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15. Note that for individuals whose chief source of income is farming less stringent rules will apply.

If you are required to make instalments and you choose not to, you will be charged daily compound interest from the date each instalment was due. The interest rate used by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for 2012 will be 5% for the entire year. The instalment rate for the first quarter of 2013 has not yet been set. Instalment interest continues to compound until taxes are paid for the year. A penalty will also be charged where total instalment interest exceeds $1,000.

If you should have made instalments in this current year and did not then consideration should be given to remitting some tax as soon as possible. The Revenue Agency uses an interest offset calculation only for the instalment system. Therefore, remitting missed instalments will result in an offset of 5% interest that has been charged and potentially reduce penalties as well. This is a

risk free rate of return that should not be overlooked especially where funds are available that are earning 2% or less in a taxable account. Note if you pay an amount now that ends up being in excess of taxes owing it will be refunded when you file your 2012 tax return. Unfortunately they will not pay you interest on your net refund unless there are significant delays in processing of your return.
