When we work together let our giving and sharing sing your name.

    FROMOURPASTOR

Im writing this at the end of October, as I have to do in order to make surewe get the bulletin to the press in good time, but I know this weekend willhave been dominated by the Fall Festival. I hope we have been blessed bygood weather and I know that, even as we gather for the Masses of Sunday, people will still be out on the field packing everything up. Many thanks to allof you who volunteered and I hope you enjoyed yourselves. Next week weshould have a rough idea of how much we have been able to raise.

Thanks to living in Florida we are able to have fun even in November. InBritain, and in the northern States of the U.S., November is rather asomber month: the weather is getting cold and damp, the beautiful fallleaves have now fallen, and the days are short. But whether we were in thesunshine or the fog last Thursday, I hope none of us ignored Veterans Day.In Britain the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of theeleventh month is still observed with a two minute silenceto remember the end of the hostilities of the First WorldWar and to honor the dead; and this year many people

will be looking back seventy years to the darkest days ofWorld War II. In 1940 Hitler had conquered most ofEurope, had secured the support or neutrality of theremaining countries, and had only to defeat Britain. MostAmericans at that time were isolationists - including themany Catholics of German, Italian and Irish descent - anddid not support FDRs desire to help Britain byintervention. Things grew worse in the autumn as Hitlerbegan a concerted bombing campaign on British cities. My home town was near Coventry and as a child Iremember hearing accounts of the terrible raid on thenight of November 14th 1940. It was carried out by515 German bombers after a small group of planes haddropped marker flares at 7:20 p.m. The first wave ofbombers dropped high explosive bombs, knocking outthe utilities and cratering the roads, making it difficult forthe fire engines to reach fires started by the follow-upwaves of bombers which dropped incendiary bombs.

In one night about 60,000 buildings in Coventry weredestroyed or damaged, including three quarters of thecity's factories, the medieval cathedral of Saint Michael, two hospitals, two other churches and a police station.Approximately 600 people were killed, although theprecise death toll has never been established. Central

Coventry was one huge bombsite even in the 1950s, inmy own memory.

In the end FDR had his way, America joined the wareffort and Fascism did not prevail. A magnificent newcathedral for Coventry was consecrated in 1962. I realizeits strange to recall the war in a church bulletin but weall owe a debt of gratitude to those who fought then andhave fought since to protect our freedoms. Let uscommend to God all who lost their lives through war andpray for those who are in harms way even at thismoment.
