“because of Yehuda’s name – for his name declares praise and gratitude.” Gratitude is so central to the life of the Jewish people, that it determines our very name. The rabbis have a special expression for one whose actions match his/her name –‘K’shmo, Ken Hu’ – ‘like his name, so too is he.’ It is up to each of us as Jews – Yehudim, to remind ourselves, and those around us each day, to be thankful for the blessings of freedom and of life. May Leah’s model and the Kotzker Rebbe’s words set the tone for all of our thanksgivings, and for every day of life.
Shalom,
Rabbi Jacob Luski
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, we turn our attention not only to the festive family gatherings but, more importantly, to giving thanks. We thank God for the many blessings God has bestowed on us throughout the course of the year. And while one
day certainly does not suffice to express our gratitude, this American holiday grounds us, in the need to be thankful for the miracles of everyday life. In the Torah reading cycle, Vayetze, alludes to the importance of thanking God, and seeing God as the source of blessing. More specifically, the parsha presents God as the spring of human life. As compensation for Leah’s being ‘the hated one,’ god opens her womb and she bears numerous sons in succession – reuven, shimon, levi and yehuda. with the birth of Yehuda, Leah exclaims, “this time I will give thanks to God!” The torah continues, “therefore, she called his name Yehuda – giving thanks. On this verse, Rashi comments, “‘I will give thanks to God’ – since I have been given more than my portion, from now on, I must thank God.” Leah realizes that blessing is not to be taken for granted. She affirms God as the source of her children and names a child ‘Yehuda’ as a continual reminder of the need to thank God. Masterfully, Rabbi Menahem Mendl of Kotzk asks, “why are the Israelites called Jews, Yehudim?” the Kotzker Rebbe answers,

energy, and funds that each of you provided will help us to keep Conservative Judaism alive in our community. May we all be blessed to enjoy the fruits of our labor." Leslie Pearlstein

By Dr. Herman Koren, Professor Emeritus, Indiana State University
The history of the Jewish community of Pinellas County is a part of continuum of 4000 years of Jewish life, love and respect for God and people. This 720 page hardback book incorporates tens of thousands of pages of research materials and hundreds of interviews which helps us understand how the Pinellas County Jewish community was formed, grew, and became a huge positive influence on the lives of the Jewish and general communities of Pinellas County, Florida and the United States.
The books are available for purchase for $50 each, of which $15 will be donated to CBI. Order forms are available at the synagogue or at www.cbistpete.org

The feast that we observe as Thanksgiving, celebrates the vital roles that welcoming strangers and learning from each other have in survival. The course of American history could have been changed had it not been for the Native Americans
welcoming the Pilgrims in Plymouth, and teaching them how to plant, fertilize, make medicines, etc. And so it is with synagogue life and Judaism. We too can truly welcome newcomers, embrace the richness of our differences, learn from each other, help each other along our journeys. The result would be a CBI family that is stronger as a whole than the sum of its parts. The successful execution of that challenge would indeed be worthy of celebration! From our hearts to yours, warm wishes for a meaningful Thanksgiving. Karen Wolchuck Sher, President
From the President
I would like to take this opportunity to wish each of our members and their families a Happy Thanksgiving! For me, it is a time of reflection and thankfulness and a time for family. When growing up, our small Tampa family would get together for a lovely meal and evening, usually
at my aunt and uncle’s house. Today, we continue to have that family gathering, plus guests that are alone. It is also birthday time for us, as my son, Jacob and my niece Rachel, were both born on November 26. We have a great time and remember those that aren’t with us any more, think about earlier times and appreciate our fortune of health, freedom, and happiness. As we approach this holiday of giving, we can all reflect on that bounty we have been given and think of others less fortunate. In this spirit, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to Operation Isaiah at Kol Nidre, and remind you that we collect non-perishable food items all year long for Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services. Just drop your donations off at the synagogue office. Publix gift cards are also welcomed. Please check the bulletin carefully for lots of great events coming up – Sisterhood Membership Bash on November 10, Hootenanny hosted by Sisterhood and Men’s Club on November 6 and the Gift and Craft Show on December 4 & 5. Make your holiday and gift shopping list now (don’t forget yourself) so you will be ready when the Show opens!

I HAVE SO MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR! In particular, I am thankful for my wonderful family, my fabulous husband, Larry, and all of my friends who are my family here in St. Petersburg. I am thankful for all the devoted women who have made the first months of my CBI Sisterhood presidency so pleasurable rewarding. MY HEARTFELT THANKS to all of you who say yes when I call; who continue to work tirelessly to fulfill your responsibilities to the Sisterhood Board and CBI; who have volunteered to chair events and/or help with events; who help in the kitchen at any given time; who attend meetings, make crafts, have fun, share ruach and friendship with fellow members.
I am thankful for the opportunities to learn each day through the activities and information available through Women’s League and the Women’s League website at www.wlcj.org. Be sure to go online to see what’s there.
We had a great time at the Kitchen Shower. It is still not too late to participate. The Bed Bath and Beyond registry continues to have our wish list. Go to www.bedbathandbeyond.com, click on gift registry; type CBI in the “first name” and Sisterhood in the “last name.”

JUNIOR CONGREGATION
Some of the most important components of a good Jewish background need more than just study in a classroom. It is essential that our students have regular synagogue experience on Shabbat that interests and inspires them. Here at CBI we hold special Junior Congregation services for children in grades 3-7 on Shabbat mornings in the Chapel at 10:00 am. All children have the opportunity to worship together. They will put into practice the lessons they have learned during the week. Each student will have the opportunity to lead parts of the service, learn new melodies, and explore Shabbat teachings and stories. They will also gain the confidence they will need when it comes time to lead services for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations. Junior Congregation will meet on November 6 and 13; and December 4 and 11, 2010.
THE PAULINE RIVKIND PRESCHOOL
The Pauline Rivkind Preschool has had a very busy start of the 2010-2011 school year. With all of the holidays in September, we had many celebrations. We started with our annual Rosh Hashana Party, then continued on to help decorate the CBI Sukkah, then spent time dancing around the sanctuary with special Torahs. The children are learning so much about their Jewish heritage. We have enhanced Shabbat with Shabbat Celebrations. Each Friday morning, the children gather in the Chapel to sing Shabbat songs and listen to wonderful stories. We talk about why Shabbat is special and what make it different than other days in the week. We talk about Tzedakah and different Mitzvot. We recite brachot for the candles, challah, and grape juice in each classroom. We also do some kind of activity. Some examples are challah baking, Shabbat collages, and edible Sukkah building. We are teaching the children that Shabbat is a holiday we celebrate every week of the year! Take the time to celebrate
Shabbat any way you can. You will be happy at the results ! Bonnie Halprin, Preschool Director
CBI STUDENTS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN SHABBAT
SERVICES
Each Shabbat morning, children are invited to participate in Congregation Services by leading Ein Keloheinu and Aleinu at the conclusion of Musaf. Please make plans by having your child present at the assigned time. We look forward to hearing our children’s voices raised in song and prayer as they take their places along side all those who continue to make services more meaningful, spiritual and successful here at CBI. This month’s schedule for participation is as follows:
· November 6 – Grade 5 · November 13 – Grade 4 · November 20 – Grade 3
Hebrew High School Classes meet Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and are open to all Jewish high school age students. Classes will meet on Wednesdays, November 3, 10 and 17 and December 1 and 8. For further information, please contact Rabbi Luski at 381-4900.

CBI USY NEWS AND VIEWS
Hey CBI families and friends! My name is Yael Reich and I serve as SPUSY’s Programming/Executive Vice President as well as the Religion/Education Mercaz Correspondent this year. This past month has been fun filled with an incredible convention, a day of showing off our iron chef skills, and a week long break from school. How much better could it possibly get?
Mercaz Fall Sub-Regional convention this year, November 12th-14th in Orlando, will be a BLAST! It will be so great to reunite with everyone after a summer away from the Mercaz USY family. On November 22nd, to continue our delicious tradition, we will bake Pumpkin breads for the purchasing. The Pumpkin bread is incredible, if I may say so, and is the perfect start to Thanksgiving Break.
Looking forward to December? I know SPUSY will join me in saying we are ecstatic! This December, we will be making and serving our wonderful food at the Gift & Craft Show on the 5th; we will be bringing back Havdalah on the Beach on the 11th; and we will be participating, more than ever, in International Convention from the 26th through the 30th. This year International Convention is going to be held in Orlando, Florida. (We are just conquering Orlando this year aren’t we?) This is a GREAT opportunity for the HaNegev region but, more importantly, the Mercaz sub-region!
This being my last year in USY, I’ve been cherishing every possible moment I can with my USY family and having IC in our sub-region will be the icing on the most delectable USY cake!
Yael Reich
YOUTH DEPARTMENT
As we step into the month of November I can almost smell the pumpkin breads baking. Each year our USYers spend part of their Thanksgiving holiday in the CBI kitchen baking pumpkin breads to sale. We raise money from this and other efforts during the year for Tzedakah. Through the generosity of our CBI family we are able to donate pumpkin breads to the Jewish residents at the Philip Benjamin Tower as well as add to our Tzedakah project. Please have your orders turned in by Wednesday, November 17. We are so fortunate to be part of the Menorah Manor and Philip Benjamin campus. During October the Kadimaniks joined the residents at the Toby Weinman Assisted Living Facility for Shabbat dinner and led the residents in ruach and activities after dinner while the USYers led Havdalah for the residents at Philip Benjamin Towers. Everyone is a winner when our youth interact with our seniors! After hearing about the summer experiences of our youth during Ramah and Summer Speakers Shabbat, you may be asking how you can provide a similar opportunity for your children. Scholarship applications are now being accepted through the Jewish Federation and CBI. I encourage you to contact me so we can explore all the options together. Our USYers and Kadimaniks will be attending Mercaz Fall Sub Regional Conventions this month. We look forward to having them share their experiences with us. I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving.

FAMILY PROGRAMS
My memories are still vivid as I recall being a child and marching around the “old CBI building” proudly carrying my Simhat Torah flag as an apple wobbled on top of the stick. Those memories and so many more make me smile as I warmly remember those days from my youth literally growing up at CBI. It is so easy to feel overwhelmed in our lives today and we might be tempted to take the easy way out. Maybe we did not put the effort into building a Sukka or gathering the family for a Yom Tov or Shabbat meal. Don’t miss the opportunities to form memories with and for your children. We are here to help! Through our Pauline Rivkind Talmud Torah, Preschool and Family Programs we help provide you the framework to make memories. Many of you joined your congregational family for one or both of the “Got Shabbat” dinners already this year or joined in the CBI Sukka Hop. Soon we will gather with our families to celebrate Thanksgiving. Please remember those less fortunate and bring canned or packaged foods to CBI for donation to Gulf Coast Jewish Family Service. Sunday, November 21st the St. Petersburg Interfaith Community will gather for the annual service at 4:00 pm at Christ Gospel Church, 2512- 22nd Avenue South, St Petersburg, FL 33712-3024.
Who do you Goodsearch for?
Search now and money will go to your designated cause.

Enjoy the day at the Gift and Craft Show with the Hanukka Celebration beginning at 5:30 pm. The children can enter the Dreidel spin off contest, which will be held in the Youth Lounge and lead by the JCC Suncoast. Plan to come for a day of excitement and celebration. As a community event, the JCC Suncoast will host their 3rd Annual Havdala and Great Dreidel Spin on Saturday evening, December 4th at their Clearwater campus. Kids will be participating in several games, the Dreidel Spin, donut eating contests, Hanukka crafts, relay races and more. The JCC Suncoast will provide bus transportation for those St. Petersburg children who wish to attend; the JCC bus will leave from CBI at 6:30 pm and return to CBI at 10:00 pm. The cost of the event and transportation is $10/child and $20/family. You must make your own bus reservations by calling the JCC Suncoast at 321-6100 or by e-mailing [email protected].
I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving Sandy Brasch, Youth and Family Program Director

Scholarships Available for Summer Camp and Israel College Study
Programs
For the past 12 years, the Jewish Federation of Pinellas & Pasco Counties has offered Covenant Fund Scholarships students in grades 4-12 to attend summer camp and for college students to attend Israel College study programs. Applications are now available on the Federation’s web site for the three different categories of awards: campership awards for students in grades 4-8; high school awards for students in grades 9-12 and Israel College Study Programs (for accredited study only). Scholarships are awarded on a need base only.
Summer camp is a wonderful experience for the youth to surround themselves with Jewish friends and to learn more about their heritage and to strengthen their faith. The students who attend camp will tell you it was the best experience of the year; maybe even of their life. That is why the Covenant Fund was established; so more students could become stronger with their Jewish identity.
The Jewish Federation is accepting applications through Wednesday, January. 19, 2011. Visit their web site (www.jewishpinellas.org) for more information and to download Covenant Fund application forms.

TORAH FUND CAMPAIGN ~ 5771 ~ 20010/2011
TORAH FUND DINNER: FEBRUARY 9, 2011
DONATIONS $180 – Benefactor

$1,200 – Patron $2,500 - Scholarship (Annual) $5,000 - Keter Kavod (Annual)
The theme of this year’s Torah Fund pin is Kehillah Kedoshah: Celebrating Community Woman to Woman. A kehillah is a community: a group of people sharing the same beliefs and values. Kedoshah means holy; however, in the Torah the word holy means dedicated. That is what defines us as members of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism: we are dedicated to perpetuating Conserva-tive Judaism, and one of the ways we do that is by supporting The Jewish Theological Semi-nary, Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, and Schechter School of Jewish Studies through Torah Fund. In return, JTS and Ziegler give us our outstanding rab-bis, cantors, scholars, educators, and lay lead-ers. Take a tour of the JTS or Ziegler cam-puses and see the results of our giving. You will have a revealing experience everywhere you look—especially the faces of the students when they notice you wearing our Torah Fund pins. This year’s pin depicts women celebrat-ing, dancing, and praising. It reflects how we hope, pray, and heal, and how—united—we give. We do all this because we care. We care about our Conservative Movement and want to better educate our children. Help us reach this year’s goal. (Board letter report – Jaclyn Stevens – Southern Region)
