From the Rabbi And on what do I concentrate? Not on wealth, power or talent. These are the gifts of the few. I concentrate rather on life’s common things – friendship, family, the joy of children, community, faith in my fellow human being and usefulness in

serving people. Also on the satisfying appreciation of the pleasures of the spirit and a search for a

meaningful faith in God. All these things constitute the values of the personal life, and Rosh Hashana asks each of us to examine himself in the light

of these and other human ideals. Even after observing

these great days, I will not change the world, but I may have done something significant in that direction. I can make myself a better person and a

better Jew. Joanne and the children join me in wishing our CBI family, a Shana tova u’metuka,

a sweet and joyous New Year 5770.

Shalom,

Rabbi Jacob Luski

The celebration of the High Holy Days is the occasion for numerous

reflections touching upon many areas of concern. These festivals are universalistic in their religious meaning, so we think

about the human situation. Abroad there is the threat of war that still lingers in frustration, while at home

there are the deep problems of the economy. This Rosh Hashana we

reflect on the growing stability of Israel, but at the same time we consider the problems that must still be resolved. These and many other

questions rightfully occupy our thoughts on these “Days of Awe.” Yet, Rosh Hashana also speaks to the individual. Where do I start? I cannot transform the world. I cannot even influence my community, or synagogue.

The answer is that each person must start with himself, and even finish with herself. This is the task of Rosh Hashana, not to create a new world but to create better human beings.

Please forgive me, please forgive me, and please forgive me.

On behalf of myself, Cynthia and Jason we wish you L’Shana Tova Tikateivu v’Teichateimu, a happy and healthy and prosperous New Year. May you

all be inscribed in the Book of Life for another year. We are all in for a treat with our CBI choir this

year. These dedicated men and women have worked hard and rehearsed every Thursday night and they sound fantastic. Please let them know how much you

appreciate their efforts and their beautiful addition to our services. See you in Shul.

B’Shalom Hazzan Paul D. Goldstein

As we approach the High Holidays and my first year here at CBI comes to a close, I am pensive. Through this column, I have tried to let you get to

know me and my family. I hope I have succeeded and now its time to teach.

Though I cannot promise not to personalize and comment and try to make you laugh in the future and of

course there will be sports references.

Since it is High Holydays there is a severe shortage of space in the bulletin and I have decided to set an example and act noble. My entire message, which I really believe is worth reading, is on the website and if anyone does not have access to a

computer I will print it and give out a copy to anyone who asks, copied on purple paper of course.

In the spirit of Teshuva, if I have offended any of you or done anything which hurt you in any way, I sincerely apologize.

Vacations over, school is starting and just around the corner are the High Holy Days – early this secular year beginning September 18. At this time, people from different social, economic and political persuasions happily come together as Jews

– we embrace each other, pray together and as our

ancestors have done for thousands of years, to look for introspection and renewal. I say thank goodness for our differences but doubly thank goodness our religion can again bring us together in love and spirituality.

My six children, all adults and to me all diamonds in the rough, are off making their own way in life, differently, individually, as it should be. During the High Holy Days, my family comes together and all of those differences and the

trials of life melt away as we celebrate our Jewishness, our love of family and extended Jewish family, and our chance to reflect on our spiritual life and how we can become better human beings in the New Year. Life can take its toll and may separate us, but each year, Rosh Hashanah brings us back together, to renew and strengthen us for whatever life has in store. Something else I’m reminded of during the High Holy Days is what I’ve neglected or not said nearly enough through the past year - I Love You – to my children, my family and especially my dear, dear friends. Now, as I get older, I like to count my age by the friends I’ve made and

treasure. So please join us at synagogue this year where we can become blind to our differences, celebrate our

SISTERHOOD

The Men’s Club is always happy to help the Synagogue anyway we can. For example, just in the last couple of months, members Howard Rothstein and Jesse Rodman oversaw the cleaning of the carpets throughout

the Synagogue. The Men’s Club also paid for the repair of one of our

magnificent entry doors. The Men’s Club, thanks to Alan Gross and the kitchen volunteers, catered a delicious brunch on August 23rd for our Adult Studies program and Hadassah. The Men’s Club also sponsored the Congregational Family Cookout on August 30th, providing hot dogs, sides, and drinks. We also furnished the musical entertainment. This coming month, the Men’s Club will be attending a Ray’s baseball game and providing tailgate food on September 6th. On September 27 at 10am, we

will be building the CBI Sukkah (frame) and also assembling the break-the-fast bags for distribution after Neilah on Yom Kippur. Breakfast will be served for all our volunteers. Please attend and help! Also mark the date October 6th for Men’s Night in the Sukkah. Beer and refreshments will be served. Please don’t miss out on being a member of the Mitzvah Men’s Club. Not only do we have fun but we accomplish a great deal for CBI, the members, and Jewish community. Dues forms have been mailed out or pick up a brochure at the Synagogue Office. On behalf of the Men’s Club we wish our

Congregational family a happy, healthy, and sweet New Year.

JUNIOR CONGREGATION

Some of the most important components of a good Jewish background need more than just study in a classroom. It is essential that our students have regular synagogue experience on Shabbat that interests and inspires them. Here at CBI we hold special Junior Congregation services for children in grades 3-7 on Shabbat mornings in the Chapel at 10:00 am. All children from the PRTT and Pinellas County Jewish Day School have the opportunity to worship together. They will put into practice the lessons they have learned during the week. Each student will have the

opportunity to lead parts of the service, learn new melodies, and explore Shabbat teachings and stories. They will also gain the confidence they will need when it comes time to lead services for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations. Junior Congregation dates in September are: September 12th and September 26th.

CHANGE IN ACADEMIC SETTING

We welcome children who have changed their academic settings. Please contact the PRTT office for information and a registration form.

THE PAULINE RIVKIND PRESCHOOL

Rosh Hashanah is a time of asking questions: We ask:

What did I do last year? What am I proud of and what am I sorry about? What will I change in the new Year? What do I want to do better? We call this kind of thinking "self inventory" or "taking stock." It's the Jewish way of beginning the new year. It helps start us off on the right foot. This makes Rosh Hashanah a serious time and a happy time. It's a serious time because we have serious thinking to do. It's a happy time because the new year gives us all a chance to start over. To help us along, Rosh Hashanah has home

and synagogue celebrations, unusual food and its own prayerbook (the Mahzor). Rosh Hashanah even has its own sound--the shofar. The children at Pauline Rivkind Preschool will be celebrating all of the holidays in September in many fun ways. On September 16th we will have our annual Rosh Hashana Party with apples and honey, round challah and grape juice. October 1th we will help decorate the CBI sukkah, then have special snacks in the sukkah the following week. Children will learn about the Torah as we celebrate Simchat Torah and dance around the sanctuary. We would love to have synagogue members become active volunteers in the preschool this year. Spending time with

preschoolers is a great way to lift your spirits, make yourself feel young again, or just pass a morning. If you have the interest, we will find the perfect fit for you. Please contact the preschool office. Pauline Rivkind Preschool serves children from age 1 through age 5. Our school participates in the state Voluntary Pre Kindergarten program. Contact me if you are interested in more information for yourself, your grandchildren, or your friends.

Shana Tova! Bonnie P. Halprin, Preschool Director

BUNS FAMILY LIBRARY

NEWS : The summer hasn’t exactly been time off for the Buns Family Library Committee. This group has been working hard throughout June, July, and August to get ready for a banner fall season. The library is open every Thursday morning and visitors are welcome to drop by to take out books, DVDs and CDs, or just sit and browse any of the reference books or periodicals. The Committee's newest project is to completely revamp the Children's Section. Spearheaded by volunteer Esta Blaxberg, the children's books are being re-classified and divided into EASY READERS, JUNIOR, and TEENAGE sections. The Committee is collaborating with Ilana Dayan, Education Director, to assure that children's books are available which supplement the Religious School's curriculum. Another exciting venture is the Committee's application to the Association of Jewish Libraries for Basic Judaica Library Accreditation. We hope to receive accreditation during this coming year. Jane Markowitz, Esta Blaxberg, and Ruth Lebowitz have attended several meetings of the Sarasota Chapter of the Association of Jewish Libraries, and are gaining much information as well as networking with other synagogue librarians.

Shalom, Ruth Lebowitz, Library Co-chair

WITHIN THESE WALLS

We are honored to once again have the opportunity to help CBI raise much needed funds to maintain our building and all that happens ―WITHIN THESE WALLS‖. The Kol Nidre campaign is our largest annual fund raiser. Our goal, as it was when we built the build-ing, is to have everyone participate. Each person knows what level their gift can be.

With the support of some dedicated members, who have made early and generous pledges, we are already on the way to a successful campaign. If you have made your gift already thank you; if not yet, now is the time.

Thank you to the following members of the Committee without whom we could not be successful: Karen and Mandel Sher, Mark and Louisa Benjamin, Susie and Alan Schwarz, Naomi Berg, Helen Wertel, Susan LeVine and Bob Weis-berg.

MINYANAIRES ARE NEEDED! Who Knows Ten?

CBI is always proud to say that we are the only shul on the West Coast of Florida that has a twice-daily minyan. We are being proactive in order to ensure the viability of the minyan. This is of utmost

importance to those who are saying kaddish which cannot be said if there is not a minyan present. It is very upsetting when someone who has made the effort to come is not able to say kaddish. In order to avoid this occurrence, we have captains who will be in charge of a particular morning or evening and will recruit congregants to come on the designated day and time. If you are willing to participate in this program either as a captain or as a “minyanaire”, please contact Irma Mayer at 392-2657.

Kever Avot Memorial Services

During the High Holiday period, it is traditional to visit the graves of our loved ones

and of those who created our Jewish community.

Kever Avot Memorial Services will be conducted by Rabbi Jacob Luski and Hazzan Paul D. Goldstein.

on Sunday, September 13, 2009 at:

10:30 a.m. at Menorah Gardens, Chapel Hill Memorial Park, Largo,

and at 11:30 a.m. at the CBI section at Royal Palm Cemetery,

St. Petersburg.

The kids are back in school, football is in the air and the high holidays are rapidly approaching. From a

fund raising perspective, that means Kol Nidre. It’s importance to the synagogue’s financial state can not be underestimated. Please give generously! If contacted by a fellow congregant, please be courteous and generous as they are volunteering their time to assist our shul. Times are tough for us all so your dollars are needed and appreciated more than ever. Allow me to thank my parents, Mike and Sandy Slomka, for stepping up and asking me if they could chair the Kol Nidre campaign. Allow me to also thank them for shaping me into the caring, passionate volunteer that I am today. It’s easy to see where I learned my sense of commitment to community and family. Under their leadership Kol Nidre will be successful with your donations and the help of the following people who have stepped up again to help with this project: Mandel Sher, Susan LeVine, Naomi Berg, Helen Wertel, Alan Schwartz, Louisa and Mark Benjamin and Bob Weisberg.

My family wishes you a L’shana tova. Laurie Reiskind, Fund Raising VP

DONATION NOTES…

Donations may be made by mailing or bringing in a note to the synagogue office detailing the name of the fund, the reason for the donation, to whom it should go and the donor’s name, along with a check made out to Congregation B’nai Israel. Please note that if the recipient is not a member, please include the address. It would be greatly appreciated if checks for donations were separate from other checks to the congregation. The CBI accountant would be most appreciative.

For Sisterhood and Men’s Club dues and donations, please make checks payable to them. This makes record keeping easier.

THE MINIMUM DONATION IS NOW $10 PER ACKNOWLEDGMENT SENT.

TO BOOK MEETING ROOMS If you are having a

meeting or event, you must reserve a room with

Pam Askin as soon as possible to schedule it on

the Synagogue calendar to make sure there is a room

available, all facilities information is known, and a custodian

knows to open and close the building at the proper time. Also, if you need to cancel a

meeting or a room reservation, please notify the synagogue office as well.
