Fellow Nomads.

November 17, Sunday, Monthly Game, Walmer Country Club.

All this sounds pretty much like a normal monthly game, but

this was not to be! The weather forecast was not good but

most of our Weather Apps told us that it would clear and get better as the

day progressed. This resulted in us all registering at the tables and

venturing out onto the course for what promised to be a great day at

Country Club. What did we learn from this? Never trust a Weather App!

Our cellphones had hardly settled into our golf bags when the rain started

coming down – well not quite down, it came at a very acute angle due to the

strong winds that accompanied the downpour, ask playing partner Simon

Wilcock who's inverted umbrella is probably still in one of the bins out on

the course. Thanks go to my playing fourball which included Simon and our

opponents, HLM Neale Kunhardt and Stuart Reid, who was back in town for a

short rest before venturing back into Africa. Thanks guys for the lovely 9

holes, where we proved far too strong for the opposition. We had one

withdrawal at half-way and were joined by 2014 National co-ordinator, Duke

Nel, whose fourball had given up the quest. In their defence, the rain was

pelting down at this point. We braved our 10th hole without much success

and were nicely placed on the next hole, when the game was called off by

the Club. This meant quite a long walk back to the clubhouse for our

beckoning Castle Lite and a warm shower.

The course was in nice condition as usual and the warm half-way meal was

splendid. It was a great pity that the round could not have been completed

due to a waterlogged course but we look forward to our next visit to

Country Club in 2014. All credit must go to the Ladies who worked

admirably through the soggy and often ineligible scorecards. This was

probably a blessing in disguise as we were able to test SOP2 with incomplete

rounds played and are glad to report that it “mostly” worked very well. The

problems that were identified have been reported to Bruce and Simon who

will correct all problem areas before the next Club is exposed to this

scenario. I must add that SOP2 outdid SOP1 and identified some

shortcomings in the old system, which will no longer be used at monthly

games. Well done Ladies and also the team who assisted them at the game

and the days following with testing etc. The prize giving was a bit different

in that we announced the winners as they became available from the ladies

table as we were pushed for time, with the Springboks vs

France game beckoning and we wished to be finished prior to

kick-off so that the guys could watch at the Club. Well done

to the team who took it in turns to entertain the Nomads

whilst waiting for more results. Congratulations to Past

Captain, Boetie van den Berg on achieving his 30 year tie, what an

achievement!

Emails have been sent to all Nomads explaining the changes in the playing

calendar until April 2014 so if you have not received the mail, be sure to

speak to one of the committee members or to the Match Secretary, Jeanne

Newman. Remember also that the AGM will take place at the Port Elizabeth

Golf Club on 7 April 2014 so please ensure that you forward any agenda

items or nominations for JVC to the Secretary, Larry Kozak, prior to the

meeting, as the agenda is required to be sent to members 21 days prior to

the AGM.

We look forward to seeing you all at Humewood Golf Club on Sunday, 8

December for our next monthly game.

Good Golfing

“Tales” from Long Faced JVC

Game number 11 of the year.

The forecast was for 0.2mm of rain and they got it wrong. I arrived at Walmer Country club in solid rain and left in solid rain. The wind was blowing too. Anyway to cut a long story short, the players were called off about 2 hours into the round. The 18th Green was pretty much under water, and the course really became unplayable. There were still a couple of die-hard addicted golfers who wanted to carry on, but they were few and far between.

So we all showered and started on the Hansa draft and castle lites. My comrades for the day were partner Neil Webster, who played like a golfing God, Dave Worthington, and Sampie Marais. We got to the half-way house and I could see that no-one really wanted to go out again, and luckily that was when it was called off. Thanks for your company Gentlemen. I enjoyed playing with you.

Moving on to the Whisky competition, there were two entries. One was Ian Gooden and the other Greg Clack, much to the booing of the crowd. If only you had read the magazine Gents…..anyway, it went down to the flip of a coin, and Ian Gooden took the bottle of whisky. The answer by the way was GARY PLAYER.

The away game at Kirkwood has successfully come and gone, but I will report on that in the next magazine article.

The next game is at Humewood on the 8th of December. Remember, it is your last chance to move up the tables in all competitions, but you can still qualify for Gold cup early next year.
