Walmer Country Club was the venue for our April game and the first round of the Gary Player. The morning started out mild and pleasant and, as I remember it, only started to bluster a little as we ventured forth onto the first tee.
I'd like to thank VC Stuart for hosting the President of Walmer as his playing partner for the day as Darrell Weir and I took on the formidable pairing of Muis van der Weshuizen and William Rijs in the first round of the GPKO. Thanks to Muis and William for their patience in getting this first round scheduled and for the fun and enjoyment that we had on the course; thanks guys!!
Darrell and I started off rather slowly, adapting our strategy as we went and in the end one of the plans came together and we squeezed home by the narrowest of margins. To all the Gary Player participants, well done – you are all in either the main draw or the Plate competition and need to complete the next round by 23rd June.
Congratulations to Burke Williams on the achievement of his 40-year tie and for the impromptu and inspirational speech on what Nomads has meant to him over that time. Well done also to Neil Webster on achieving his 300 game badge representing 27 years of dedication to Nomads. The long-standing record for the “last” Silver Salver has been broken and well done to Ian McCauley for achieving the magical 40-pointer.
Apparently my “lift” plea for the May game at St Francis Bay Golf Club may have been misinterpreted. The request was intended to assist those Nomads wary of the “drink and drive” issue in getting to and from St Francis. The request was in no way intended to detract from the success of past bus trips to St Francis Links which, when coupled with a shot-gun start, allowed everyone to tee-off and finish together. The bus trip would be ideal for our game at the Links mid-July when the National Chairman pays us a visit.
Congratulations to those that represented Eastern Cape at the Nationals last month. The team acquitted themselves on and off the field in true Nomadic fashion and finished a credible fourth

place overall. Congratulations to Dave Pearson who walked off with the Best Eastern Cape Player. Well done to Southern Cape in taking home the Bert Hunt Trophy. Vic Hall and his organizing committee did a sterling job putting together an awesome tournament. The Ebotse golf course was in magnificent condition and for some proved quite a challenge.
The 48th Nationals at Ebotse also saw the changing of the guard with Robbie Frank from Easterns being inducted as National Chairman; our own Greg Clack elected unopposed as National Senior Vice Chairman and Gary Rodwell from Southern Natal voted in as National Junior Vice Chairman. Good luck to the new National Executive. The “Nash” will be paying us a visit mid-July and joining us for our monthly game at St Francis Links on the 14th July. Look forward to seeing you all there.
Earlier this month we competed against Border for the annual Rough Ryder and Frontier Trophy. We were one-point off the pace at the Fish on the Saturday but this setback was overshadowed by the resounding victory in the Frontier Trophy. Many, many thanks to all that took the time and effort to make this week-end a truly enjoyable one; to Nick for the hardwork in putting the week-end together and to Stuart who handled the prize table so magnificently.
Next month's game at St Francis will only involve our monthly game on the Sunday at St Francis Bay Golf Club as the Easterns Challenge has been put on hold. It was evident last year that congested diaries and spiralling travel costs are making it difficult to get members to participate. It was suggested that the challenge could be played at the National Tournament, but this endeavour was turned down. There was a thought that it might be played at the Easterns 35th Anniversary at the end of May but as that date clashes with our monthly June game, it's anticipated that response will be difficult.
From the way things stand at the moment, this year's event is off. Both Free State and Easterns have confirmed that they are unable to support our planned week-end on the 4-5th May at St Francis. A

“Wake” suggestion was made to get a couple of 4-balls together and go out and play the Links on the Saturday anyway!!
Due to commitments on the National front, Greg Clack has had to relinquish the role of EC Membership Officer. I would like to applaud and recognize Greg for the diligence and hard yards that he has put into the Membership portfolio over the past few years. Nationally there is a focus to drive new membership and in this vein to broaden the Membership Officer role to that of Membership Ambassador with the responsibility of a “car-park” to “car-park” experience for new members. Greg's standing down provided an ideal opportunity to expand the role immediately and my thanks to Ian Gooden who willingly stepped up to the challenge. The Ambassador role in no way diminishes the responsibility of the proposer and seconder to guide the new member on his Nomadic journey.
Congratulations to all those who have offered up their services for the Andrew Mentis committee this year. Stuart has chosen the Cape Recife School as his beneficiary and our best wishes go with him and his committee in their fund-raining endeavours this year. Looking forward to great year!!
A lengthy epistle this month but then again lots to report and not all of it of others doing!! Upcoming attractions include our monthly game at St Francis Bay Golf Club on the 5th May and the inaugural Swaziland Nationals at the Royal Swazi Golf Club on the 16- 18th May. I look forward to seeing you all at St Francis.
‘til next month,
Ken

Fellow Nomads.
Walmer Country Club welcomed us for our April game with
fine weather forecast with a fresh breeze out of the west.
The course was in great shape and we commend the efforts
that the new green-keeper has put into the course, keep up the good work.
Clearly the recent rains contributed to some good growth and a nice green
finish to the course and ever-present bush, just waiting to claim your brand
new Taylor Made golf ball. I was honoured to play with Past National
Chairman, Burke Williams, on the anniversary of his 40th year as a Nomad in
the Eastern Cape. What a fine gentleman Burke is and it was an absolute
pleasure to enjoy the day with him. We were joined in the fourball by my
partner, Club President Chris Roberts and Burke's partner, 2012 Champion
of Champions, Marcel Pumba Roux. We had a wonderful game on the course
and had it not been for Marcel still recovering from his open heart surgery,
Chris and I may not have taken a few rands off the opposition. We
accepted the donation gratefully and then proceeded to prepare for prize
giving. This was a wonderful emotional affair as the 40 year tie was handed
over to Burke and he was coerced to say a few words. Burke gave us a short
description of what Nomads had meant to him over 40 years which had to be
a huge inspiration to young and prospective Nomads in attendance. Well
done Burkie!!!
Another big occasion on the day,
which was slightly overshadowed but
just as important, was the 300 game
badge handed over to a very popular
Neil Webster. Congratulations Neil,
what a milestone. Neil has been a
very active Nomad and again has to
be an inspiration to others who were
in attendance. Well done to the
winners on the day, with some really
good scores coming through,
including the first Eastern Cape
Silver Salver for a few years to Ian
McCauley for his 40 points on the
day. Well done Ian! Prize giving was

held shortly after the last players came off the course so
well done ladies and Captains on getting matters dealt with
in good time.
Well done to the Eastern Cape contingency who represented
us at Nationals in Benoni at Ebotse Golf Club. We managed a credible
fourth amongst stiff opposition and a really challenging course.
Congratulations to Southern Cape for winning the Bert Hunt Trophy. We
also travelled to Port Alfred last month where we managed to retain our
Frontier Trophy from Border, well done team.
We look forward to seeing you all at Humewood Golf Club on 2 June for our
next monthly game.
Good Golfing
Stuart

“Tales” from Long Faced JVC
Game number 4 of the year.
Just an update from our travels. We returned from a very successful trip to Fish River and Royal Port Alfred. The Border boys managed to sneak the fun and friendly Rough Rider competition from the Eastern Cape. We ran out of Whisky, but that was because the Bells was decanted by some of the players to take on the course with them!!
Please gentlemen. Let's save some of the whisky for the later players. Then the real competition took place on the Sunday for the Frontier Trophy.
There was some spectacular scoring, and I am pleased to announce that Eastern Cape retained the trophy, with an average score in excess of 33 points per player. Well done and thank you to all for taking the trouble of going down there. It was very tiring for our Captain Ken.
Our monthly meeting was played at Walmer Golf club in ideal conditions and a course in very good condition. One could not ask for better. There was a little hiccough with non-Nomads entering the field half way during the Nomads round, but thankfully this was addressed.
Now for the tale.
Myself and my Gary Player partner Greg Clack played our opening round of the competition against George Saffy and Earl Berman. Gentlemen, thank you for the enjoyable outing out. They paid us cash, Greg and I ended up as best playing pair and I got myself into the Gold cup by winning the division with 38 points. Yeah baby !!! As always, tried to get the prize giving started as quickly as possible, and there was some slow play out in the field, so I had to rush the last guys into the showers. Apologies for that.
We have the special game away at Hankey on Saturday 25th May. Please mark this in your calendars. Look out for the email invitations.
Letter 3 for the competition is the letter 'R'
