In these next few weeks, we will be having our worship televised and livestreamed via youtube.com/hancockchurch.

In these times, community is more important than ever. Because of this, we invite you all to share your ideas of how best to feel spiritually fulfilled in these times of limited interaction. MOMENT FOR REFLECTIONAs a nation, we are currently in the midst of an important conversation about our history, how it is remembered, and how it is best to be celebrated. The imperative of speaking about racism and its continuing powers, as well as conversations about immigration (conversations as old as the country itself) have us considering statues and monuments that have been erected by past generations for reasons that seemed wise to them, but that now seem troublesome to many of us today. Our faith tradition, including our adoption of our roots in Judaism, is inherently suspicious of monuments and memorials, fearful lest the statues and the revering of the moments that they attempt to capture, become idols, distractions from the fact that God can never be pinned down, that, in the words of the great Pilgrim John Robinson, “the Lord hath yet more light and truth to break forth from His holy word.” As faithful people, how can we best participate in the essential conversation about monuments without surrendering our best, and iconoclastic, principles?

HEBREW BIBLE READING . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Paul ShupeDeuteronomy 34:1-8

Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him the whole land: Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the Negeb, and the Plain—that is, the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees—as far as Zoar. The Lord said to him, ‘This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, “I will give it to your descendants”; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.’ Then Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at the Lord’s command. He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor, but no one knows his burial place to this day. Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his vigour had not abated. The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab for thirty days; then the period of mourning for Moses was ended.

PROCLAMATION OF THE GOSPEL . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . David C ClarkMark 9:2-8

Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, ‘Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!’ Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.

Whence comes this bright celestial light,What cause produces this?A heaven opens to my sight,Bright scenes of joy and bliss.

O Lord Jehovah art Thou here? This light proclaims Thou art."I am in deed I'm always near

Unto the humble heart.

"The proud and lofty I despise,And bless the meek and low.

I hear the humble soul that cries,And comfort I bestow.

Of all the trees among the woodI've chose the little vine;

The meek and low are nigh to me,The humble heart is mine."

Of all the kinds that range at large,I've chose one little flock,

And those I make my lovely charge,Before them I will walk.

Their constant shepherd I will be,And all their ways refine,

And they shall serve and rev'rence me,The humble heart is mine."

PASTORAL PRAYER . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . David C Clark

A TIME OF SILENT PRAYER

THE LORD’S PRAYEROur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

THE SERMON . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Hold them Loosely . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Paul Shupe

GATHERING WORDS (responsively)

One: We gather now at the table of Christ, seeking mercy, forgiveness, joy and peace. We remember that this is his table, and so we say, Come from the north and come from the south, come from the east and come from the west. Come regardless of age or race or sex or creed or orientation or identity. Come not because you must, but because you may.

Many: Come because it is our Lord’s table, and he bids us come.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION (responsively)

One: We remember that on the night He was betrayed, Jesus sat at table with His disciples, and when they had eaten, He took the bread, and He blessed it and broke it, and He gave it to them saying,

Many: “Take and eat. This is my body, broken for you. Eat of this bread as often as you will, and remember me.”

One: After they had shared the bread, he took a cup, and he blessed it, and he gave thanks to God, and he poured it out for them and said,

Many: “This is the cup of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sin. Whenever you drink of it, remember me.”

One: These are the gifts of God...

Many: ...for the people of God. Come, let us share the feast!

Build Community in a Diverse WorldlUncHes FOr OUtdOOr cHUrcH OF caMBridge: yOU can Help!

Hancock provides 40 lunch bags every other Sunday for homeless men and women who participate in The Outdoor Church in Cambridge. With the lunch bags we send granola bars, fruit (clementines or bananas), and waters (about 80 waters) and often cookies. For more info on The

Outdoor Church, check out their website.

During the year, Hancock middle school youth [JYO] make sandwiches and assemble these lunch bags once a month for The Outdoor Church. Until we can all be together again at Hancock, a team of Hancock adults is assembling The Outdoor Church lunch bags and other food and beverage items every other Sunday. Next dates are 8/2, 8/16, 8/30, and 9/13 with more days likely through the fall. With COVID-19, the need is even greater.

How can you help? While we have many items signed up for through August, always welcome for those dates are extra small bags of grapes or clementines or bananas or small bags of cookies or brownies. Or if you are interested on future dates in making 20 sandwiches or providing granola bars or water or cookies or fruit or cookies or brownies, we will add your name to future “Sandwich Sundays.”

Sandwiches and other items are brought to the Hancock parking lot around 7:20 a.m. on the designated Sunday morning. Each item prepared with carefully outlined food safety protocol. Lunch bags are assembled (with face masks, gloves, and social distancing) and the lunch bags are picked up along with the other lunch supplies and taken to The Outdoor Church.

If you are interested in helping with The Outdoor Church lunches, please contact Daryl Battin (781-789-3763 / [email protected]) who will coordinate a schedule for the lunch contributions. Also contact her if you have lunch items to contribute which need to be picked up.

Thank you so VERY much for your help - these lunches are an essential part of the day for The Outdoor Church attendees.

Another way you can help is with donation funds for a supply of disposable face masks, for brown paper lunch bags, for $5 Dunkin Donut gift cards, for granola bars and waters included each “Sandwich Sunday” with The Outdoor Church lunch bags. Donations for The Outdoor Church can be made to Hancock Church by check or online - please specify “Outdoor Church” on a check or in the comment field for online donations. Thank you again!

Protect the Earth

lexingtOn interFaitH garden Update

Hancock Church members volunteered at the Lexington Interfaith Garden on Friday, July 21. We are now using Fridays as a “pre-harvest” day. Since we are getting by with fewer volunteers, trying to harvest everything AND deliver to the food pantry by 8:30 am on Saturdays is impossible. On Friday, our work included picking and cleaning radishes and cucumbers, pulling white and red onions, and trimming batches of

dried garlic cloves and onions. Thank you to Carla Fortmann, the landowner and head gardener, and to all of the volunteers who have contributed their time – the hard work is showing!

We welcome all who seek to know God.

We believe that, although we are many members, we are one body in Christ.

We have been called as well as challenged by God to respect and reconcile our differences.

We recognize and love each individual as a child of God.

We welcome, respect, support, and lovingly encourage people of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental

ability to join us on our journey of faith.

The faith journey indeed calls Hancock Members not to be silent in the face of prejudice, injustice, and exclusion, but to express our faith, in word and deed,

for justice and inclusiveness for all humanity.

As Paul wrote in Galatians, “In Christ there is no longer Jew or Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one...”
