First Reading – Isaiah 55:1-5

The appointed readings follow, the reader first saying

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah.

Thus says the Lord:

"Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters;

and you that have no money, come, buy and eat!

Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?

Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.

Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live.

I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David.

See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples.

See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you,

because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you."

At the conclusion of the reading, the lector says

Hear what the Spirit is saying God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm – Psalm 145:8-9, 15-22

The People sing the Psalm following what is known as “Simplified Anglican Chant.” Each half-verse of the Psalm is sung on the reciting note up to the last accented syllable (in bold print below). If there are an odd number of verses, the last verse repeats the final two bars.

8 You are gracious and full of com-passion, *

slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 You are loving to everyone *

and your compassion is over all your works. 15 You uphold all those who fall; *

you lift up those who are bowed down. 16 The eyes of all wait upon you, O God, *

and you give them their food in due season. 17 You open wide your hand *

and satisfy the needs of every living creature. 18 You are righteous in all your ways *

and loving in all your works. 19 You are near to those who call up-on you, *

to all who call upon you faithfully. 20 You fulfill the desire of those who fear you; *

you hear their cry and help them. 21 You preserve all those who love you, *

but you destroys all the wicked. 22 My mouth shall speak your praise, O God; *

let all flesh bless your holy Name for ever and ever.

Second Reading – Romans 9:1-5

A lector reads the second reading from Scripture, first saying

A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans.

I am speaking the truth in Christ -- I am not lying; my conscience confirms it by the Holy Spirit -- I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.

For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, comes the Messiah, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

At the conclusion of the reading, the lector says

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

Gospel Hymn “Seek ye first” Hymnal 711

As the Gospel Book is brought forward, the following is sung.

Gospel – Matthew 14:13-21

Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds

heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick.

When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.”

They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.”

Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Gospeler The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon – The Rev. Jedediah D. Holdorph

Affirmation of Faith

An Affirmation is said, all standing (as they are able).

We believe in God above us, maker and sustainer of all life, of sun and moon, of water and earth, of male and female.

We believe in God beside us, Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, born of a woman, servant of the poor, tortured and nailed to a tree. A man of sorrows, he died forsaken. He descended into the earth, to the place of death. On the third day he rose from the tomb. He ascended into heaven, to be everywhere present, and his kingdom will come on earth.

We believe in God within us, the Holy Spirit of Pentecostal fire, life-giving breath of the church, Spirit of healing and forgiveness, source of resurrection and eternal life. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

Prayer is offered for the world and its people, for those who suffer and those in need, and for the Church and its members.

The leader and people pray responsively. Particular intercessions and thanksgivings may be offered by the leader of the prayer and by members of the congregation in the times of silence.

Leader Entreating the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who teaches us to pray as we ought, let us pray for the Church throughout the world: for Michael, our Presiding Bishop; for Pat, our Bishop; and for all in our parish.

Particular intercessions/thanksgivings for the wider Church are offered.

Leader God of all inspiration, People Hear our prayer.

Page 9: Sunday, August 2, 2020 · 2020. 8. 2. · ╬ Sunday, August 2, 2020 ╬ The Ninth Sunday after Pentecost Good morning … Buenos días … Bonjour TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH 469 NW

Leader Let us pray for the people of this city and for all the communities from whom we have come and to whom we shall return …

After each of the petitions which follow, additional time is allowed for other intercessions/thanksgivings to be added – silently or aloud.

Leader God of all journeys, People Hear our prayer.

Leader Let us pray for all people who seek the light, love and mercy of the living God …

Leader God of all seekers, People Hear our prayer.

Leader Let us pray for the sick, the bereaved, the oppressed and the homeless …

Leader God of all healing, People Hear our prayer.

Leader Let us pray for the broken and torn fabric of the earth, as it yearns for health …

Leader God of all creation, People Hear our prayer.

The celebrant may conclude with the following (adapted from a prayer by J. Philip Newell).

O God of life, of all life, of each life: we offer you our prayers in the love of Christ, in the affection of Christ, in the company of Christ. As your household desires in heaven, so may we desire on earth this day and all the days you have given us. Amen.

Alternatively, the celebrant adds “A Prayer for the Power of the Spirit among the People of God” or some other concluding Collect.

God of all power and love, we give thanks for your unfailing presence and the

hope you provide in times of uncertainty and loss. Send your Holy Spirit to enkindle in us your holy fire. Revive us to live as Christ’s body in the world: a people who pray, worship, learn, break bread, share life, heal neighbors, bear good news, seek justice, rest and grow in the Spirit. Wherever and however we gather, unite us in common prayer and send us in common mission, that we and the whole creation might be restored and renewed, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Exchange of the Peace

All stand and prepare to greet one another in the Lord’s name, the Celebrant first saying

Deep peace of the quiet earth to you. Deep peace of the flowing air to you. Deep peace of the running wave to you. Deep peace of the shining stars to you. Deep peace of the Son of Peace be always with you.

People And also with you.

The Peace

As able, all stand and prepare to greet one another in the Lord’s name, the Celebrant first saying

The peace of God be always with you. People And also with you.

Please greet any who may be near with a word of peace.

Birthday/Anniversary Blessings (along with other special prayers/announcements)

Those with birthdays and/or anniversaries to celebrate are invited to come forward to receive a blessing. The People and Celebrant say the appropriate prayer together.

Birthdays: On this echo-ing day of your birth, may you open the gift of solitude in order to receive your soul: enter the generosity of silence to hear your hidden heart; know the serenity of stillness to be enfolded anew by the miracle of your being.

May you always be blessed; with walls for the wind, a roof for the rain, a warm cup of tea by the fire, laughter to cheer you, those you love near you and all that your heart might desire. Amen.

-- adapted from a blessing by John O’Donohue (with an old Gaelic blessing)

Anniversaries: God of tenderness and strength, you brought these people together and led them to this day; go with them now as they travel through good times, through trouble or through change.

Bless their home, their partings and their meetings. Make them worthy of each other’s best, tender with each other’s dreams, and trusting in your love. Amen.

-- adapted from The Book of Common Prayer (Church of Ireland)

While the table is prepared, members of the congregation may make offerings of money. If you are able to support the ongoing life of this congregation, please continue to offer a check or use your credit card as you have in the past. If you’d like, you may also make a gift online.

Once the table is prepared, the People sing the following, using the tune of Hymn 380.

Be present at our table, Lord: Be here and everywhere adored; These creatures bless; and grant that we may feast in fellowship with thee. Amen.

The Invitation

The table of bread and wine is now ready. It is the table of company with Jesus, and all who love him. It is the table of sharing with the poor of the world,

with whom Jesus identified himself. It is the table of communion with the earth, in which Christ became incarnate.

… It is Christ who invites us to meet him here.

The Story of the Last Supper

Celebrant God is here. People And God’s Spirit is with us.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Holy One.

Celebrant Let us give thanks for all that has been done. People And to God who leads us through the years.

The celebrant continues

We offer you praise, creator God, for in the communion of your love

Christ comes close to us and we come close to Christ.

Therefore with the whole realm of nature around us, with earth and sea and sky, we sing to you; with the angels of life who envelop us, with Michael and the host of heaven, with all the saints before and beside us, with Patrick and Brigid and Columba, with brothers and sisters, east and west, we sing to you. And with our loved ones, separate from us now, who yet in this mystery are close to us, we chant the hymn of your unending glory:

The People and Priest sing the following together

The Celebrant continues

Blessed is our brother Jesus, who walks with us the road of our world’s suffering, and who is known to us in the breaking of bread.

On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

13

Through your goodness, Loving God, we have this bread and wine to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. May we know your presence in this sharing of this bread, so that we may know your touch in all bread, all matter.

Hear us, O Christ, and breathe your Spirit upon us and upon this bread and wine. May they become for us your body, vibrant with your life, healing, renewing and making us whole.

And as the bread and wine which we now eat and drink are changed into us, may we be changed again into you, bone of your bone, flesh of your flesh, loving and caring in the world.

All AMEN.

Lord’s Prayer

Presider As Christ teaches us, we pray,

All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name,

your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,

now and for ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread and Ministration of Communion

After the breaking of the bread, the Celebrant may say

The Body of Christ is broken for the life of the world. Here is Christ coming to us in bread and in wine. The gifts of God for the people of God.

A period of silence is kept. Then may be sung

Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following or some other words of Invitation

The Gifts of God for the People of God.

and may add Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

Prayer after Communion

The ancient tradition of the Church reminds us that when it is impossible to be present at a celebration of the Eucharist, and to receive Holy Communion, the desire to be united with Christ (and the People of God) in the Sacrament is enough for God to grant all the spiritual benefits of Communion. The presider invites the following prayer to be said by all:

Since I cannot at this time receive communion, I pray you to come into my heart, Lord Jesus, and let nothing separate me from you: come and dwell in the fullness of your strength; be my wisdom, and guide me in right pathways; conform my life and actions to the image of your holiness; and in the power of your gracious might, rule over every hostile power that threatens or disturbs the growth of your kingdom; who with the Father and the Holy Spirit live and reign, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

(following James Koester, SSJE, adapt. from Saint Augustine’s Prayer Book)

The Blessing of God’s People

The bishop when present, or the Priest, may bless the people.

Bless to us, O God, the sky that is above us, the earth that is beneath us,

your friends who are around us, your image deep within us.

May the Wisdom of God, the Love of God, and the Grace of God strengthen you to be Christ’s hands and heart in this world, in the name of the Holy Trinity.

People Amen.
