Subject: Reopening Plan for St. Christina Church Amid COVID-19 Hello St. Christina Family, Volunteers Are Still Needed as We Move into Phase 2 Masses We will need volunteers to assist with various aspects of our parish reopening plan. Importantly, leadership team members and volunteers must not be part of a “vulnerable population” (that is, not over the age of 65; no underlying medical condition such as diabetes, lung disease, undergoing cancer treatment, etc.). I ask all of you who are younger than 65 and healthy with no underlying health conditions to consider assisting with one of three reopening teams:
• Set-up team. Sample duties include ensuring that all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees’ arrival/departure, windows are opened, etc.
• Greeting team. Sample duties include assisting in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church; making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill; directing people to appropriate seating/waiting areas, etc.
• Cleaning team. Sample duties include maintaining and cleaning essential and trafficked areas of the church before and after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if you do not have your own, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.
To volunteer for one of these teams either call the Rectory (773-779-7181) or email Amy Murphy at [email protected].
Timing for Our Reopening The guidelines and measures required to reopen are designed to protect our wellbeing and that of our broader community. As Cardinal Cupich has noted, from the first pages of Scripture we learn that we indeed are “our brother’s keeper.” Our Lord Jesus Christ prayed, “that they all may be one” (Jn 17:21) and commanded us “love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (Jn 13:34). Our collective patience, willingness to help and the care we take to reopen is a demonstration of our unity and love for one another. May God grant you His peace during this difficult time and may He manifest His love and presence to you in abundant ways. If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected].
To volunteer for one of these teams either call the Rectory (773-779-7181) or email Amy Murphy at [email protected].
Thank you for your understanding and patience.
Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Tom Conde

On Multiplying (One Way or the Other) Copyright 2020 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])
A couple of weeks ago here, while discussing how Jesus says “Whoever has ears ought to
hear” three separate times as told by Matthew, I spoke of a priest who once told me that whenever
Jesus says the same thing repeatedly, we had really better pay attention. OK. By extension, then, I
think we had all really pay attention to today’s Gospel, because this story of Jesus feeding the five
thousand with five loaves and two fish is the only of Jesus’s miracles that is covered by each of the
Gospel writers. Matthew writes about it (today’s Gospel text). Mark writes about it. Luke writes about
it. John writes about it.
Think about that. Only Matthew writes of Jesus calming the storm at sea. Only Mark writes of
Jesus curing the deaf/mute man. Only Luke writes of Jesus cleansing the ten lepers, and of course,
only John writes of Jesus changing that water into wine. But all four write of the loaves and fish. Per
a footnote in my Bible, “The principal reason for that may be that it was seen as anticipating the
Eucharist…” But what intrigues me most here (in any of versions) is that we never really see
anything multiplied, even though this story is often referred to as the multiplication of loaves and fish.
In my Bible, Matthew’s, Mark’s, and Luke’s telling is entitled “The Feeding of the Five
Thousand.” Only John’s telling gets the “Multiplication” nod. A small detail, but a detail. A bigger
detail is that only in John’s account does Jesus feed the crowd (“Then Jesus took the loaves, gave
thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining”). In the other three accounts, Jesus gives
the bread to the disciples, who in turn feed the crowd [“Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in
turn gave them to the crowds” (this is Matthew, and the Mark and Luke accounts are similar)].
And this detail takes on greater importance when we consider in the Matthew/ Mark/ Luke
accounts what Jesus says when the disciples first tell him of the plight they’re all in (lots of people,
late in the day, deserted place, no food). Because this is when Jesus directs the disciples in all three
accounts the very same: “Give them some food yourselves.” It’s funny that in the end, this is exactly what happens. Jesus gives bread to the disciples; the disciples give bread to the thousands. But in
none of the accounts are we shown Jesus multiplying a single crumb. Not even John’s account,
which, as noted, is named as such. I don’t doubt that the Gospel writers all tell this story
“anticipating the Eucharist,” and I don’t doubt that a miracle occurred that day. I’m just not sure of
which miracle. It could be that Jesus truly did multiply and divide. But as an alternative miracle,
maybe he just showed us that those in need of God’s care can count on us, for when we share what
we have — albeit sparse — we find that everyone not only has enough, but more than enough.
