Prelude Prelude on “Irish” Dale Wood

Welcome & Announcements

Opening Hymn O worship the King Hymnal 388

O worship the King, all glorious above! O gratefully sing his power and his love!

Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise.

O tell of his might! O sing of his grace! Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space,

His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, and dark is his path on the wings of the storm.

The earth, with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, thy power hath founded of old,

hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree, and round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea.

Thy bountiful care, what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air; it shines in the light;

it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, and sweetly distills in the dew and the rain.

Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, in thee do we trust, nor find thee to fail;

thy mercies how tender! how firm to the end! Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend!

Opening Sentence BCP 355

Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

God, our Creator, as we look into the skies we celebrate the wonders of the worlds that surround us. Help us to perceive your presence in the evening sky, to discern your spirit in the wind, and to observe your mercy in the falling rain. Teach us to hear the good news from the sky celebrating the glory of God in Earth. Rejoice with us as we behold the dawn revealing the mysteries of the skies above and Earth below. In the name of Christ who unites heaven and Earth. Amen.

First Reading Jeremiah 4:23-28

I looked on the earth, and lo, it was waste and void; and to the heavens, and they had no light. I looked on the mountains, and lo, they were quaking, and all the hills moved to and fro. I looked, and lo, there was no one at all, and all the birds of the air had fled. I looked, and lo, the fruitful land was a desert, and all its cities were laid in ruins before the Lord, before his fierce anger. For thus says the Lord: The whole land shall be a desolation; yet I will not make a full end. Because of this the earth shall mourn, and the heavens above grow black; for I have spoken, I have purposed; I have not relented nor will I turn back.

Reader The word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Gradual: Psalm 19: 1-6 1 The heavens declare the glory of God, * and the firmament shows his handiwork. 2 One day tells its tale to another, * and one night imparts knowledge to another. 3 Although they have no words or language, * and their voices are not heard, 4 Their sound has gone out into all lands, * and their message to the ends of the world. 5 In the deep has he set a pavilion for the sun; *

it comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber; it rejoices like a champion to run its course. 6 It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens and runs about to the end of it again; *

nothing is hidden from its burning heat.

Second Reading Philippians 2:9-13

Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Reader The word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn Creator of the earth and skies Hymnal 148

Creator of the earth and skies, to whom the words of life belong,

grant us your truth to make us wise; grant us your power to make us strong.

We have not known you: to the skies

our monuments of folly soar, and all our self-wrought miseries

have made us trust ourselves the more.

We have not loved you: far and wide the wreckage of our hatred spreads, and evils wrought by human pride

recoil on unrepentant heads.

For this, our foolish confidence, our pride of knowledge and our sin,

we come to you in penitence; in us the work of grace begin.

Teach us to know and love you, Lord,

and humbly follow in your way. Speak to our souls the quickening word,

and turn our darkness into day. The Gospel Mark 15: 33-39

Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?’ which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, ‘Listen, he is calling for Elijah.’ And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, ‘Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.’ Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, ‘Truly this man was God’s Son!’

Priest The Gospel of the Lord People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon Fr. Kent Branstetter

17 Pentecost – September 19, 2021 5

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People Form I, BCP 383

With all our heart and with all our mind, let us pray to the Lord, saying "Lord, have mercy." For the peace from above, for the loving-kindness of God, and for the salvation of our souls, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace of the world, for the welfare of the Holy Church of God, and for the unity of all peoples, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy. For Susan our Bishop, for Kent our rector, for Lonell and Henry our assisting priests, for Sandy our Bishop in Residence, for Cindy our deacon, and for all the clergy and people, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For Joe our President, for Gavin our Governor, for our county and city councils, for the leaders of the nations, and for all in authority, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For this city, for every city and community, and for those who live in them, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For seasonable weather, and for an abundance of the fruits of the earth, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the good earth which God has given us, and for the wisdom and will to conserve it, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the aged and infirm, for the widowed and orphans, and for the sick and the suffering, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the poor and the oppressed, for the unemployed and the destitute, for prisoners and captives, and for all who remember and care for them, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For all who have died in the hope of the resurrection, and for all the departed, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For deliverance from all danger, violence, oppression, and degradation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. That we may end our lives in faith and hope, without suffering and without reproach, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Defend us, deliver us, and in thy compassion protect us, O Lord, by thy grace. Lord, have mercy.

17 Pentecost – September 19, 2021 9

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise. Glory to you for ever and ever.

At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. By your will they were created and have their being.

From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace. By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed.

And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

Sanctus

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

Page 10: Creation Sunday: Sky Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

17 Pentecost – September 19, 2021 10

After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming.

Lord God of our Fathers: God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name. Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Closing Hymn Lord of the Dance J-Book J-101

I danced in the morning when the world was begun, And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun,

And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth: At Bethlehem I had my birth.

Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,

And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be, And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said he.

I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee,

but they would not dance and they wouldn’t follow me; I danced for the fishermen, for James and John;

they came to me and the dance went on. Dance, then, wherever you may be,

I am the Lord of the Dance, said he, And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be, And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said he.

I danced on the sabbath and I cured the lame;

The holy people said it was a shame. They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high,

And they left me there on a cross to die. Dance, then, wherever you may be,

I am the Lord of the Dance, said he, And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be, And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said he.

I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black; It's hard to dance with the devil on your back.

They buried my body and they thought I'd gone; But I am the dance, and I still go on:

Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,

And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be, And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said he.

Page 14: Creation Sunday: Sky Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

17 Pentecost – September 19, 2021 14

They cut me down and I leapt up high; I am the life that'll never, never die.

I'll live in you if you'll live in me: I am the Lord of the Dance, said he.

Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,

And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be, And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said he.

This week the group will discuss new composting requirements. • The Bible - What’s it all about? - Join Fr. Kent in a discussion about bible basics. Please contact Mark Alcorn or Vanessa in the church office if you are interested in participating in this upcoming virtual option.

With the 20th anniversary of 9/11 I have been watching a lot of old news coverage. I was surprised by the grief I felt, still after 20 years. It reminds me that grief is an ever present part of our lives. And it can well up at any given time. For the last year and a half we have been without the normal comforts of our physical church and community. Our church staff have done a marvelous job keeping us connected during this rather stressful period. Now that we can safely gather I propose to start a bereavement group.

This would be not only for those who have recent losses, but for all who have endured and survived grief. Knowing grief is an ongoing life long process. I would like this to be a time to tell our stories; to comfort one another, and share God’s love. If you are interested in being a part of this group please contact Jan Kapchinske ([email protected]/619-394-4489). Any assistance in starting such an effort would be greatly appreciated.
