Seventeenth Sunday After Pentecost 10:00 a.m. HOLY BAPTISM & CHORAL EUCHARIST

(BAS)

Prelude: “Vater unser im Himmelreich” (The Lord’s Prayer)..... J. S. Bach

The Gathering of the Community

There is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

Luke 15.10

Hymn 594 “Judge eternal, throned in splendour” ...................... RHUDDLAN

Greeting and Prayer ............................................................................ p.185

Glory To God .................................................................................... p. 186

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, you call your Church to witness that in Christ we

are reconciled to you. Help us so to proclaim the good news of

your love, that all who hear it may turn to you; through Jesus

Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy

Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Proclamation of The Word

First Lesson: Jeremiah 4:11-12, 22-28

At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem: A hot

wind comes from me out of the bare heights in the desert toward my

poor people, not to winnow or cleanse--a wind too strong for that.

Now it is I who speak in judgment against them. “For my people are

foolish, they do not know me; they are stupid children, they have no

understanding. They are skilled in doing evil, but do not know how

to do good.” I looked on the earth, and lo, it was waste and void; and

to the heavens, and they had no light. I looked on the mountains, and

lo, they were quaking, and all the hills moved to and fro. I looked,

and lo, there was no one at all, and all the birds of the air had fled. I

looked, and lo, the fruitful land was a desert, and all its cities were

laid in ruins before the LORD, before his fierce anger. For thus says

the LORD: The whole land shall be a desolation; yet I will not make

a full end. Because of this the earth shall mourn, and the heavens

above grow black; for I have spoken, I have purposed; I have not

relented nor will I turn back.

.

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.

All: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 14 Chant: George Black .................................................. p. 717

Refrain: The Lord looks down from heav’n upon us all.

Second Lesson: 1 Timothy 1:12-17

I am grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me,

because he judged me faithful and appointed me to his service, even

though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of

violence. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in

unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith

and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is sure and worthy of

full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save

sinners--of whom I am the foremost. But for that very reason I

received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might

display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who

would come to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of the

ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever

and ever. Amen.

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.

All: Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn 352 “Amazing Grace” ..................................... NEW BRITAIN

Gospeller: The Lord be with you.

All: And also with you.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

All: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to

him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying,

“This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them." So he told them

this parable: “Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing

one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go

after the one that is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he

lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, he

calls together his friends and neighbours, saying to them, ‘Rejoice

with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell

you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents

than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

“Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them,

does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until

she finds it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends

and neighbours, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin

that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the

angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

(Luke 15:1-10)

Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ.

All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Sermon: The Rev. Lisa Newland

After all have been presented, the Celebrant addresses the congregation,

saying:

Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support

this person in her life in Christ?

People: We will.

Prayers for the Candidate

And now let us pray for Avery Renee who is to receive the

sacrament of new birth.

Leader: Deliver her, O Lord, from the way of sin and death.

People: Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: Open her heart to your grace and truth.

People: Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: Fill her with your holy and life-giving Spirit.

People: Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: Teach her to love others in the power of the Spirit.

People: Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: Send her into the world in witness to your love.

People: Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: Bring her to the fullness of your peace and glory.

People: Lord, hear our prayer.

The Leader concludes:

Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of

Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his

resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who

lives and reigns now and forever. Amen.

The Celebration of Baptism

Thanksgiving over the Water

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the

Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it

you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt

into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the

baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the

6

Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and

resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We

thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are

buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his

resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit.

Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we celebrate our

fellowship in him in faith. We pray that all who have passed

through the water of baptism may continue for ever in the

risen life of Jesus Christ our Saviour. To him, to you, and to

the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, now and for ever.

Amen. The Celebrant then says,

Let us join with those who are committing themselves to

Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant.

The Baptismal Covenant

Celebrant: Do you believe in God the Father?

People: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven

and earth.

Celebrant: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

People: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was

conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the

Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was

crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the

dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into

heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He

will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Celebrant Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

People: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the

communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the

resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Celebrant Will you continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in

the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?

People: I will, with God's help.

Celebrant Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall

into sin, repent and return to the Lord?

People : I will, with God's help.

Celebrant: Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of

God in Christ?

People: I will, with God’s help.

Celebrant: Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your

neighbour as yourself?

People: I will, with God’s help.

Celebrant: Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and

respect the dignity of every human being?

People: I will, with God's help.

Celebrant: Will you strive to safeguard the integrity of God’s creation,

and respect, sustain and renew the life of the Earth?

People: I will with God’s help.

The Baptism

The candidate is presented by name to the Celebrant, who then

immerses, or pours water upon, the candidate, saying

Avery Renee Raymond, I baptize you in the Name of the

Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Celebrant makes the sign of the cross using Chrism on the forehead

and saying

I sign you with the cross, and mark you as Christ's own for ever.

Amen.

The Celebrant, at a place in full sight of the congregation, prays over the

newly baptized, saying

Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit

you have bestowed upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin,

and have raised her to the new life of grace.

Sustain her, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give her an inquiring

and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit

to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all

your works. Amen.

The Giving of the Light

The Celebrant may then give to the newly baptized a lighted candle,

saying:

Receive the light of Christ, to show that you have passed from

darkness to light.

When the newly baptized has received the candle, the people say,

Let your light so shine before others that they may see your

good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jeremiah 4:11–12, 22–28

Jeremiah prophesied to Judah and Jerusalem between 625

and 587 BCE, during the reign of the last Kings of Judah. His

work unfolded during the period when Judah was under

increasing pressure and threat first from the Assyrian empire

and then from the Babylonian empire, which eventually

besieged and destroyed Jerusalem in 587. Politically during

this period Judah entered into treaties with anyone they

thought might help them against the Assyrians to whom they

were paying tribute. The tribute caused high taxation and

increasing poverty and injustice to the poor. Today’s

reading, drawn from chapter 4 of the book announces

God’s judgment which will be in the form in the form of

invasion from the north (vv. 5-8, 11-18)). The chapter also

introduces two other themes which play a significant part in

Jeremiah’s experience along with all the other Judahites

caught up in the storm of destruction and exile. One theme

is the image of Jerusalem as a poor woman suffering as her

home and family are uprooted and destroyed (vv. 19-21, 31)

while the rich complacent women of the city ignore reality

and focus their lives on fashion and luxury (30). The second

theme, found in chapter 4 for the first time, is that of the

sense of God misleading and betraying the people (vv. 9-

10), which seems very much to have been part of

Jeremiah’s own experience as a prophet of God. In the final

part of our reading today we hear a description of the world

being un-created, coming apart at the seams (vv. 23-28),

the inevitable result when humans forget how to do the

good for which they and the world were created, and

become completely absorbed in evil and oppressive

behaviour.) [Walter Deller/2016]

A TREASURER FOR ST. MATTHEW

For the 2017 year, we need a person to perform the duties of a treasurer.

This person will be involved with the Wardens to create the budget and

assist in guiding this parish on a financial path. It involves the posting

of income and expenditure into excel spreadsheets and will then create

reports on a monthly and annual basis for this parish. These duties will

require about 4-5 hours per month, with some extra at year end.

If interested, please contact one of the Wardens for further details.

TRUTH & RECONCILIATION LECTURE with Bishop Mark

MacDonald at St. James Cathedral

Time: Wednesday, September 21 2016, Refreshments - 6:30 pm, Public

Lecture - 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm, followed by Q & A.

Speaker: Bishop Mark MacDonald, National Indigenous Anglican

Bishop

Topic: “The Doctrine of Discovery and Our Relationship to the Land”

What is “the Doctrine of Discovery?” Where do we find ourselves and

how is our relationship with the land shaped by faith and colonialism?

Please join us as we unpack the theological assumptions that informed

the colonization, settling, and establishment of Canada. This lecture, and

greater ongoing series on Truth and Reconciliation, is in response to the

59th “Call to Action” of the Truth and Reconciliation Report. Article 59

calls Churches to offer education on their role in colonization and its

effect on Indigenous communities. Please join us for what will be a night

of deep listening and reflection. All are welcome.

ANNUAL WALKATHON ~ Saturday, October 1st. This year’s route

will bring us back to the Betty Sutherland Trail, walking along the Don

River path. Please join us for some fun, fellowship, exercise and

refreshments.

It only takes 3 easy steps.

1. Add your name to the list in the hall, and pick up some sponsor

sheets.

2. Ask your family, friends and neighbours to sponsor you in

support of St. Matthew’s.

3. Lace up your sneakers and bring your sponsor sheets and money

to the church before 10:00 a.m. on October 1st when we will hit the trail.

The walk will take about an hour after which we will return to the church

for lunch.

If you cannot walk, we hope you will sponsor one of the walkers. More

information: Janice Sanders, 416-491-6422, [email protected]

OUR BIG BAZAAR ~ Saturday, November 5th. Circle the date and plan

to be there for our biggest fundraiser and social of the year!

FOOD DRIVE FOR REFUGEES ~ Have you supported The Oriole

Food Space? Two more weeks! The Foodspace asks for: rice, canned

vegetables, (low sodium if possible) canned/packaged fruit (low sugar if

possible) beans/lentils, proteins (tuna, nut butter) baby products. Please

leave your items in the big brown bin in the Narthex. Talk to Kyn Barker

for more details. Oriole Food Space is our local Food Bank: Tues 7-9pm,

looking for 250 ml (one cup) size mason glass jars to help those making

preserves for the November Bazaar. Larger sizes are not needed. As in

years past, empty jars may be left in the blue Food Bank Box in the

Narthex. The Pantry appreciates any donations of your preserves to add

would be happy to receive them. Please contact Shirley Young at 416-

494-7836 or Jane Slessor at 416-493-0931 for more information.

SUNDAY SCHOOL & NURSERY: WE’RE BACK! Sunday School

for children between the ages of 3-6, under the direction of Susan Porter,

uses an exciting and engaging curriculum called SPARK! Each week,

children will gather together to explore the week’s Bible story, enjoy fun

activities, pray, and grow in faith. Whether you are able to come every

week or once in a while, we look forward to welcoming your little ones!

BOOKS ~ We are asking parishioners and friends in the community who

support St. Matthew’s to please DISCONTINUE DONATING books of

any kind for our sales. The lifting, displaying them, then returning the

books for storage has become too much for the volunteers to handle. We

appreciate all the donations in the past but ask, in future, if you would

dispose of books elsewhere.

PHOTO CONSENT FORM ~ Pictures could be used to promote the

Church’s mission in a variety of media: illustrations, bulletins,

exhibitions, videotapes, reprints, reproductions, publications,

advertisements, and any promotional or educational materials in any

medium now known or later developed, including the Internet. To keep

compliant with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic

Documents Act, passed in 2004, we ask that all parishioners fill-out, sign

and return either the Photograph and Publicity Release Form or Photo

Exception Form. Both forms are available at the back of the church, or

from your Sidesperson or the Office. As required by law, this

information will be kept confidential.

PHOTOGRAPHS AND VIDEOS ~ Wilf McOstrich, parishioner, and a

Communications Committee member has graciously offered to take

pictures in preparation to populate our revised website. So from time to

time, you may see Wilf snapping, random shots in and around the

church, or asking you to pose. Also, don’t be surprised if some other

parishioners take pictures or videos, too. As always, privacy is top-of-

mind, so please be reassured that before using any of these shots,

permission of those in the image(s) – still or moving - will be sought, if

we do not already have your OK on file. So thank you, in advance for

your support in helping us to maintain, and build, connection with people

beyond our principal Sunday gathering.

PRE-AUTHORIZED REMITTANCE (PAR) ~

Each Christian “should give, then, as they have decided, not with

regret or out of a sense of duty; for God loves a cheerful giver.”

(2 Corinthians 9:7)

In today’s age of electronic giving, the PAR program helps

congregations receive the offering through automatic debit. Our church

has on-going commitments that need our regular support. Because the

church is important to us, we are each called to make a financial

commitment to enable the ministry of our church to flourish.

Preauthorized Remittance (PAR) makes it easier for us to fulfil our

commitment. Using the PAR program for offerings allows

congregational members and adherents to give intentionally,

proportionally and faithfully to the church, even when they are not able

to be there in person. This helps provide the church with a dependable

flow of contributions, makes budgeting easier and reduces paper work.

Your donation will be deducted directly from your bank account on the

17th of each month. PAR Remittance forms and envelopes can be

found in the Narthex, or please ask a Sidesperson for assistance. If you

are a new member to the Parish and your choice of giving is by

envelope please inform the office at 416-494-7020 or email

[email protected], giving your name, address and telephone

number. Also state whether you want monthly or weekly envelopes.

A PRAYER FOR MISSION ~ Every day, all of us at St. Matthew are

invited to pray for/about the missional work in our community. Lord, we

know You are a God of mission, and You call us to follow you into the

world. Help us to listen to Your voice in each other, in our parishioners

and in our wider community. Amen.
