School Tennis Courts As of next week, the gate to the school tennis courts will be left unlocked, making it available as a free community facility. Families are encouraged to make use of the courts. Please use them in a respectful manner. Please note that the court WILL NOT be available during net-ball training or tennis coaching times. What a brilliant suggestion, Mr Placanica!

THANK YOU to the Ash family for their

involvement in the organising and

planting of the lovely new tree that we

now have at school.

It is situated in the lawn area between

the junior and senior blocks and will

provide shade for many years to come.

A big THANK YOU to the P&C for organising and coordinating our first-ever Mother’s Day stall. The parents worked enthusi-astically and tirelessly to set up a very successful fundraising event. The students really enjoyed buying gorgeous gifts for their mums.

Thanks to the generosity of families and friends who donated the gifts, a whopping $3012.55 was raised!

Library Update Are you aware that there is a Parent Zone in the library? This has books of particular interest to parents, that are available to borrow. Titles include “Reading Magic”, “ How to Motivate Your Child”, “Nurturing Kids” , “You Can Do It for Parents” and many others.

Here, you are also welcome to come in to read a hardcopy of the school newsletter; or share a quiet time to read to your child or to help choose a book.

The library is only opened on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednes-days, from 8.30am to 3.30pm. Outside of their library session, students may change their books before and after school.

Focus on Social Media

This year, one of the focus areas for schools is on Social Media - “Work with school communities to promote the safe use of so-cial media by students”.

We‘ve all heard of the risks of using social media, such as Face-book and Instagram, but we need to make sure young students are all aware of these issues. It is also important that, as adults, we are aware of what our children are doing online, as it is so easy for them to be caught up in the inappropriate use of social media.

Schools feel the affect of this, as the negative aspects spill over and impact on the relationships between students. Cyber-bullying and harassment are most often the problem and many parents are unaware their children are involved in doing it or being a victim of it. It may take several forms:

publicising private instant messages, text messages or e-mails

posting threatening messages

posting photos that will cause embarrassment spreading rumours

It’s rare for harassment to spill over into actual real-world con-flicts, but it can still cause a lot of emotional distress for chil-dren. The anonymity of some social networking sites makes it easy for unscrupulous people to target young children and en-gage them in harmful conversations. It’s easy for predators to pose as teens and lure children into harmful real-world contact as well. Most social networking sites have privacy controls in place, but children seldom use them. Active monitoring of pro-files and behaviours catches some predators, but not all of them. Another risk is identity theft, which can occur when chil-dren share too much information about their name, date of birth and location.

Schools have controls in place too, but it’s up to parents to make sure their children are safe when using social media. Many of the same rules that apply to online chat, apply to these sites:

Children should use an alias.

They shouldn‘t give out personal information to people they don’t know. A last name and a town are enough for a preda-tor to locate your child.

Don’t assume that people are who they claim to be. Children should immediately end any communication that

makes them uncomfortable and report it to a parent.

For younger children, parents should investigate any sites they’d like to use. Find out what privacy protections are in place and insist that your child uses them. For children under sixteen, that often means a private profile that can only be seen by approved friends.
