You may have been listening or reading in the news about NAPLAN results; when we have this information, the individual student reports will be sent home.

On another note, we will be sending home our Semester Two Payment Requests for Excursions and Voluntary Contributions. The Voluntary Contributions funds are used for various learning areas which were outlined on the Contributions and Charges for 2017 information that was sent home to you in December last year. PEAC is the Primary Extension and Challenge program which provides part time extension and enrichment for exceptionally able students in Years 5 and 6. The program offers a range of courses that provide the most able students with opportunities for extension and enrichment work that is intellectually challenging.

All students in Year 4 will have the opportunity to be assessed for suitability for the PEAC Program.

Students who are performing well at school are possible candidates for the program. There are some students in Year 4 whose potential is not so easily recognized. There may be students who are underachieving at school and there are some students who demonstrate certain skills and abilities more at home than at school. Together, we can ensure that all students who have the potential for high academic performance are identified.

Testing at West Leeming Primary School will occur on Wednesday, August 9 2017.

The test will measure the student’s ability to recognise patterns and to predict with speed and accuracy, as well as measure each child’s ability to apply their knowledge and learning.

The scores from the test will be used in the selection of students for PEAC courses and extension programs during 2017 to 2018.

BOOK WEEK: AUGUST 19 - 26 This year West Leeming is holding two exciting events to celebrate Children's Book Week.

The first is "Star Reader", which all children from Years 1 to 6 should have brought home on Wednesday. Your child's goal should be challenging, but still attainable, and the aim is to encourage children to read a variety of texts. Certificates for those children who achieve their goal will be presented on Friday, August 25, at S4's class Assembly.

The second is a "Book Week Parade", where children from Kindy to Year 6 are encouraged to dress up as a character from a book. The Children's Book Week theme is "Escape to Everywhere", so the children may like to base the costume around that, dress up as their favourite character or a char-acter from their favourite picture book/novel. Please note that dress ups should be based on characters from books and not movies and that this is not a free dress day. If your child chooses not to participate, they must wear their school uniform. The parade will take place in the Undercover Area on Wednesday, August 23 at 9am .

ASTHMA MANAGEMENT IN WINTER AND SPRING Asthma is one of the most common chronic childhood conditions, affecting 1 in every 10 children in Australia. Emergency admissions and hospitalisations peak during the winter for children with asthma and flare-ups are often more prevalent during the winter and spring. Good management however can help children with asthma and their carers get through this tricky time of year with more confidence. Here are a few tips for parents and carers: make an annual appointment for an asthma review by your child’s doctor update your child’s Asthma Plan at the start of each year and provide a copy to the school talk to the teacher and other key staff about your child’s asthma – their usual triggers, symptoms and medication provide an in-date blue reliever puffer and spacer for use at school (clearly labelled with child’s name and date of birth) help your child understand the importance of taking their preventer medication every day, as prescribed ask their doctor about having a flu vaccination encourage hand washing and covering one’s mouth when coughing to help prevent the spread of germs

HEALTHY EATING PYRAMID The Healthy Eating Pyramid is a simple visual guide to the types and proportion of foods that we should eat every day for good health. It contains the five core food groups, plus healthy fats, according to how much they contribute to a balanced diet based on the Australian Dietary Guidelines (2013).

The layers of the Pyramid are based on the recommended food intake for 19 - 50 year olds. However the proportions and placement of each food group are generally applicable to all age groups from 1 - 70years.

The Healthy Eating Pyramid encourages Australians to enjoy a variety of foods from every food group, every day.

Visit www.nutritionaustralia.org for more information about the Pyramid and healthy eating.
