From the Leadership Team

School problems: what to do It’s normal for children to have some problems at school.

How to approach school problems with teachers When you need to talk with teachers about problems, a calm and positive approach is likely to get a positive outcome for your child. Here’s what to do. Pause to calm down If something has just happened to upset your child, this can upset you too. Try to take some time to calm down before you do anything. This will help you avoid doing something you might regret later, like sending an angry email. Use it as a teaching opportunity

Even with a serious problem, you can model positive problem-solving for your child by being positive, thinking about

solutions and talking about working with the teacher. This is better than complaining or being aggressive.

Speak respectfully No matter what you think, it’s important to speak positively and respectfully about your child’s teacher, the school and other children in front of your child. If you complain or criticise the teacher or other children and their families, your child will do the same. Go through the right channels This usually means talking directly to your child’s teacher to start with, rather than the principal. Going straight to the principal can make the problem bigger than it is. It’s best to make an appointment with the teacher so that you can discuss the issue privately. Avoid defensiveness When there are problems, people sometimes feel defensive. Defensiveness can get in the way of problem-solving, so it’s good to try seeing the teacher’s perspective and to help the teacher see your perspective too.

You’re invited to a

Parent Afternoon Session on the benefits of Stage classes.

Regular attendance at school for every student is essential if students are to achieve their potential,

and increase their career and life options. Schools in partnerships with parents are responsible for

promoting the regular attendance of students. Regular attendance means students attend school at

least 80% of the time. While parents are legally responsible for the regular attendance of their

children, school staff, as part of their duty of care, record and monitor part and whole day absences.

We work alongside our Home School Liaison Officer to monitor student attendance to ensure our

students have the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential.

If your child is sick, please inform the school within 7 days to ensure our records reflect your child to

be ill. If a student is absent for three consecutive days, without notification from a parent/caregiver, a

phone call home will occur to check in with the student and their family and offer assistance if

required.

What are the responsibilities of Parents/Caregivers?

Parents/Caregivers must ensure:

o They provide an explanation for absences by means such as a telephone call,

written note, text message or email to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence.

o They work in partnership with the school to plan and implement strategies to

support regular attendance at school, including communicating with the school if they are aware of issues impacting on their child’s attendance or engagement with school

All electronic devices including mobile phones, iPads and smart watches are to be

signed in to the front office upon arrival to school. Students do not require personal

devices on school grounds. If a student travels to and from school and for peace of

mind you have provided a device, this is for emergency use only and once again is

required to be signed in to the school office upon arrival at school and can be collected

at the end of the day.

Mrs Kylie Callan

Deputy Principal

We are here to help.

If your child has a difficulty with another student talk to us.

Please do not try to address the issue yourself.

Let us address the issue.

When a parent tries to help their child by talking to or

challenging another student the situation escalates into a child

protection matter. This may lead to police involvement and or

the restriction of entry onto school premises and this is not

what we want for any of our parents or children.

School Photos - Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 March School photographs are scheduled to be taken by advancedlife on Wednesday 18 March (class photos) and Thursday 19 March (individual and sibling photos). Whilst an envelope and flyer have been distributed, it is the photography company’s preference that ordering be completed online to reduce administration and potential security issues related to the return of cash and envelopes on photo day. Orders for packages and sibling photographs can be placed securely online at www.advancedlife.com.au using our school’s unique 9 digit Online Order Code: MR6 RR2 1LV. Portrait and group package orders are due by photography day. There are several different package options to choose from. Should you wish to purchase a sibling photograph online, the order must be placed no later than the day before photography day. Sibling photographs will only be taken if an order has been placed. Family photos are to be paid for using the separate “Sibling Photos” envelope that is available from the office. These orders are due online by 17 March 2020. PLEASE NOTE:

Change for photo envelopes will NOT BE available at the office. This needs to be organised prior to bringing envelopes to school.

Students are expected to wear full summer uniform on this day. Please remember: students should not wear their sport shirt on photo day – school grey collared polo shirts MUST be worn.

Should you have any queries concerning school photographs or online ordering, please direct them via email to [email protected].

STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES

Student Led Conferences will run utilising a group timetable. Your child will attend with you

and host the conference for the evening. The class teacher will be available to support and

facilitate the conference process. This is not a one on one interview.

simple instructions. Bookings open at 9:00am Friday 28 February, and will close on Friday 13 March 2020

Zone Swimming Carnival

On Thursday 27 February, 10 students attended the Zone

Swimming Carnival at Macquarie Fields Leisure Centre. The

students had a wonderful day and performed very well.

Congratulations to Kruz (Stage 1 Blue) and Andrej (4 Orange)

for placing in the Finals for their age races and will proceed to

the Regional Swimming Carnival on Tuesday 10 March.

Congratulations to Mrs Hanley and Mrs Frappell who have received permanent classroom

teacher positions at Dalmeny Public School.

Congratulations to Mrs Dracic (formerly Miss Burrows) who was married over the school

holidays.

The school predominantly uses the electronic media Skoolbag to send notices and newsletters out to the

community. Excursion notes will continue to be sent out as a hard copy for the time being. For parents who do not

have access to a smart phone or computer we are only too happy to provide you with a hard copy. Please let the

office know if this is the case.

We thank you for helping us to minimize our global footprint through your support of electronic media.

Printing out newsletters to a community of over a thousand students every two weeks along with the other

printed notes that go out weekly leads to a huge environmental footprint. The logistics and time it takes for

us to print out 500 to 1000 plus copies each fortnight, counting out copies into classes bundles and

distributing them to over 40 classes is not necessarily productive. And it is surprising how many notes we

often scoop up in the afternoons that have been lost by little people that never make it home to mum and

dad. At least with electronic media you have e.g. the newsletter on hand and can print it out or have it on

hand for reference. 😊

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS

NSW Public Schools do not have compulsory fees or charges.

Schools may request contributions that enhance educational and sporting programs, however voluntary

contributions are a matter for decision by parents and the school will support the decision of parents and

carers. The school will meet with the P&C for community input into the level of our voluntary contributions.

There will be a cap of $50 per year.

If you would like to help out in others ways, again this is voluntary and a matter for decision by parents and carers

the library can always do with help, as can classrooms with reading and writing and or maths, sporting activities,

listening to children read, resource development, gardening and we very much appreciate it when you send in a

box of tissues, paper towels and or a box of wipes. It is wonderful help, especially with runny noses and sticky

hands. 😊

Emma Jamieson Alyse Hezemans Principal Assistant Principal

Lost Property During the colder mornings and days turning warmer, please check the lost property draws located in the

admin foyer if your child has lost any personal property at school. In order that any lost items are able to be

returned to your child, please write your child’s name on everything! You can:

use a permanent laundry marker to label clothes, hats and shoes, or sew or iron on personalised labels;

check that labels haven’t faded with washing;

go through your child’s bag with them each night.

All uncollected items will be donated to our second hand pool and other lost property items will be placed in

the clothing recycling bin.
