Dubbo South Public School Respect, Care, Cooperation & Responsibility
Term 2, Week 10—30th June 2020
From Sharon’s Desk We have reached the last week of the term, a very challenging one at that. It has been wonderful to see all of our students return throughout the term and teachers returning to their classroom teaching and practice. I hope that after a good 2 week holiday break, students and staff will return rested and healthy. With the latest COVID-19 update this week, all students will be able to return to playing contact activities; basketball, touch football and netball in school playground from Wednesday 1st July. I am sure that our students will return to responsible and safe play. NEW BUILDINGS are being erected at our school. By the time we return next term we will have the three demountables on Dalton Street removed as a result of changes in enrolment numbers. Two new buildings will be built in the Special Education Unit on Ronald Street. This is a very exciting time with the replacement of the old dental clinic that has been utilised as 2 classrooms for the unit. These rooms, although fulfilling the purpose for the last five years of providing space for students in the unit, the new rooms will be great, providing much more room for all students. A school opening will occur during Term 3. The unit is also trialling the project of a therapy boxer dog named Moo. Moo has been trained to sit with the students in Mrs McLeod’s class each school day. We are looking forward to seeing the support she will provide for all students. SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY on 20th July will see staff in attendance working through sessions on planning for the new 2021-2024 cycle; Parent engagement and NAPLAN questions. All students K-6 will return on Tuesday 21st July. I am looking forward to all students returning. SCHOOL PHOTOS will be taken on 22nd, 23rd July and sibling photos on Friday 24th July. Photos will be purchased and ordered online with a key code to be provided on our return. All students must be in full winter uniform and without the busy coloured hair (a current trend for a few students across the school). Photo information is on the back of this newsletter. FAREWELL to our wonderful cleaner Leonie Smart who has been looking after our school for 13 years. Happy Retirement! At this time parents/carers are still not allowed on the premises throughout the day. Pick up and drop off practices will remain the same. Have a happy holiday and travel safely if you are
going away. I look forward to seeing your children return next term. Forward Always Sharon Murray, Principal.

Stage 2 and 3 English Impact Sharing Session
On Monday afternoon last week Stage 2 and 3 teachers
came together with school leaders in the library to share
high growth learning stories in reading and writing.
The session was Dubbo South Public School’s first Impact
Sharing Session.
“The session’s format is inspired by Bill Gate’s funded
Project Zero at Harvard University research that teachers
learn best from their colleagues. Teachers were asked to
volunteer to share how they have changed a practice and
were able to observe greater levels of learning growth in
themselves and/or their students since the Week 2 Stage
2/3 Learning Session, which focused on determining
Essential Learning in English,” Instructional Leaders Mrs
Natalie Polak said.
During the Impact Sharing Session 5 teachers presented a
micro impact story of 2, 6, 8 or 12 minutes to pique their
colleagues’ interest. Presentations all followed the same
cycle– 1) identified area for growth in English, 2) baseline
evidence, 3) evidence of new approach, 4) evidence of
impact and 5) learning takeaways. The audience members
listened intently to each story and completed an evaluation
survey in between each presenter. There was no question
and answer time. Audience members were encouraged to
reflect on the impact evidence presented, and seek out the
teachers presenting to discuss, or observe, their approach
in greater detail at a later date.
“Dubbo South Public School is committed to supporting the
growth of our professional teachers. We are currently
funding opportunities for teachers to observe each other’s
lessons, or collaborate on new innovative high impact
practices, to benefit our students’ learning,” Principal Ms
Sharon Murray said.
“It was truly inspirational to listen to teachers of up to 18
year’s experience talk about how they have changed
practices and are seeing positive results. It was equally
impressive to see a teacher who has just started their
career this year present on how they are innovating with
new reading strategies.”
“The session was the best professional learning I have
attended in a long time. It created a positive buzz by
allowing the wonderful work our passionate teachers are
doing to be celebrated.”
Stage 2 and 3 teachers will partake in a Numeracy Impact
Sharing Session in Term 3, once essential mathematical
learning priorities have been determined by the teachers.
Audience feedback:
“I enjoyed how the session was short and sharp. The
different speakers were honest and engaging. I loved
seeing what my colleagues are doing!”
“I enjoyed seeing and hearing what is actually working in
the other classes at our school.”
“I liked that the teachers were passionate about what
they were achieving and happy to share.”
“I have walked away with a variety of new strategies that
have been proven to make a positive impact on students
in this school.”
“I liked the excitement and enthusiasm of the teachers
presenting. They were all so happy they are making a
difference for their students.”

Orders have been given out to students. There
were a few items, such as the walkie talkies, that were so
popular that they are on back order. Scholastic have not
given a date for delivery and may not be here until next
term. As soon as they arrive they will be delivered to
classes.
Websites for inquiring minds: While the physical museum is
still closed, there are lots of
interesting pages and
articles on their website.
The section on sustainability has information about
composting, recycling, reducing toxins in cleaning and
climate change. There are lots of ideas of things to do at
home to help the environment. Click on this link to find
out more. https://australian.museum/learn/teachers/learning/

Overdues: There are still a few books outstanding. Use the
holiday break to have a check through shelves and under
beds to see if you can find any books that belong at
school.
Congratulations to
Thaviru Wickramasingha, Navreet Kaur, Emily Lousick
and Eliza Quinn who have completed their reading
challenge. Well done. These students are regular library
borrowers.
The holidays are a great time to catch up on reading for
the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC). If students need
to borrow extra books to catch up over the holidays,
come and see the friendly library staff before Friday.
Aussie Kids is a new series of books in the library. Come
in and check them out.
Enjoy the break. Stay safe and warm.

ICAN LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
Students in Stage 2 and 3 involved in the ICaN Mentoring Leadership program were finally able to head back
to the ICaN Native Nursery as the COVID restrictions begin to ease. 11 Stage 2 students spent last Wednesday
at the nursery where they we keen to get their hands dirty and get back into gardening. The boys continued to
learn about native plants and their traditional uses. The students also participated in a ‘Signing into Country’
activity where they mixed up ochre and all left their mark in their own area at the nursery. After a big BBQ
lunch, students finished the afternoon in the goanna garden where they got stuck into some landscaping.
Ten Stage 3 students then spent Thursday down at the nursery picking up where they left off in Term 1,
working on their project involving the construction of a BBQ area and native garden. The boys planted over 20
native plants, and got their hands dirty with some concreting and bricklaying. They also participated in the
‘Signing into Country’ activity in their area. After cooking up a big BBQ lunch the boys were all worn out and
ready to head back to school.
