Location and boundaries

Dubbo City is located in the Orana Region of central New South Wales, about 400 kilometres north-west of Sydney.

Dubbo City is bounded by Gilgandra Shire in the north, Warrumbungle Shire and the Wellington Council area in the

east, the Cabonne Council area in the south, and Narromine Shire in the west.

Name origin

Dubbo is thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning "red earth".

Settlement history

European settlement dates from the 1820s when the first land grants were made, with land used mainly for grazing

and agriculture. The village of Dubbo was established in 1849. Population was minimal until the 1870s, spurred by the

gold-rush. Gradual growth took place during the late 1800s, aided by the opening of the railway line in 1881.

Significant residential development did not occur until the post-war years, particularly from the late 1960s. Rapid

growth took place during the 1970s and 1980s, with the population of the City growing from about 21,000 in 1971 to

about 31,000 in 1986. The population continued to increase during the 1990s, rising from nearly 34,000 in 1991 to

about 37,600 in 2001. The population was then relatively stable, rising marginally to nearly 37,900 in 2006.

Population growth is expected in the future.

Land use

Dubbo City is a rural and expanding residential

area, and some industrial and commercial land

uses. The City encompasses a total land area of

about 3,300 square kilometres. Settlement is

based in the city of Dubbo, and the small villages

of Ballimore, Brocklehurst, Eumungerie, Mogriguy,

Rawsonville, Toongi and Wongarbon. Much of the

rural area is used for agriculture, particularly

wheat and wool production, with some crop, cotton

and vegetable growing, and animal grazing.

Transport

The City is served by the Golden Highway, the

Mitchell Highway, the Newell Highway and the main

western railway line.

Homestead, Dubbo Airport, Dubbo Observatory, Dubbo Showground, Victoria Park, Goonoo National Park, Mogriguy

National Park, Beni State Conservation Area, Coolbaggie Nature Reserve, various state forests and several

vineyards.

The original inhabitants of the Dubbo area were the Wiradjuri Aboriginal people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the weekly housing rental payments of households in Dubbo City compared to Regional NSW shows that

there was a smaller proportion of households paying high rental payments ($400 per week or more), and a larger

proportion of households with low rental payments (less than $150 per week).

Overall, 2.4% of households were paying high rental payments, and 26.7% were paying low payments, compared with

7.7% and 25.3% respectively in Regional NSW.

Dubbo City SEIFA Index of Disadvantage measures the relative level of socio-economic disadvantage based on

a range of Census characteristics. It is a good place to start to get a general view of the relative level of

disadvantage in one area compared to others and is used to advocate for an area based on its level of

disadvantage.

The index is derived from attributes that reflect disadvantage such as low income, low educational attainment,

high unemployment, and jobs in relatively unskilled occupations. When targeting services to disadvantaged

communities, it is important to also look at these underlying characteristics as they can differ markedly between

areas with similar SEIFA scores and shed light on the type of disadvantage being experienced.

A higher score on the index means a lower level of disadvantage. A lower score on the index means a higher
