FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK

Class 1T have been busy writing detailed descriptions of Monty, our PBL mascot. They have also drawn some accompanying pictures as well. In keeping with this students have articulated what it means to be responsible in our school

setting. Please view the display next time you are passing my office.

Tell Them From Me Student Feedback Survey Our Year 4 - 6 students will soon be taking part in the ‘Tell Them From Me’ student survey. The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish to. If, during the survey, your child is uncomfortable, he/she can choose to stop the survey at any time. The majority of questions in the survey can be skipped.

If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please complete the attached form and return it to school by 22 March, 2019.

Professional Learning Kindergarten This week our Kindergarten teachers attended professional learning in “Planning for Learning Using Best Start Kindergarten”. This will be beneficial for the kinder team to enhance their knowledge of how best to support our students in the early years through explicit teaching practices in the classroom.

HARMONY DAY

‘Our diversity is our strength’ Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s success as a diverse society united by a common set of values. It is about bringing people together (EVERYBODY BELONGS) to promote Australian values and the Australian way of life. It’s a day to understand and commit to the benefits of living in a country that embraces common values of respect, fairness, participation, acceptance and a fair go for all.

To show our support for cultural diversity, students and staff are invited to wear orange to school on Harmony Day, Thursday 21st March. Students may wear a piece of clothing or an accessory that is orange together with

their school uniform. Classes will engage in activities that create opportunities to think, talk about and recognise how our differences make Australia a great place to live. Lisa Akkoumi & Dudleen Thompson Harmony Day Co-Ordinators

LEADERSHIP IN YEAR 6

At school we recognise each and every year 6 student as a leader. While we have established formal roles such as prefects, house captains and librarians we want to convey to our community that every student is a leader and that leadership is a responsibility we all share.

Following the GRIP leadership conference the Year 6 teachers have reflected on the key principles of assisting our students to be effective leaders. The 4 CORE character traits of a leader which we use are Confidence with humility, Others focussed, Reliability and Empathy.

This week we have used these principles to enable every student to commit to a school responsibility. Some roles have been initiated by staff and others by students. Some of the many roles include covering the infants sandpit after play time, PALS (Playground and Activity Leaders) to assist with games in the K-2 playground, assisting with assembly preparation by setting up chairs and microphone, writing articles for the school newsletter and being responsible for taking the sports equipment out to the playground each lunch time. In future weeks, students will be sharing the many small ways they are making an impact in our school. The demonstration of responsibility, initiative and sustained commitment in their choice of activity will be encouraged.

Student led initiatives are most effective when they are supported by teachers and parents. We are excited our students have the opportunity to develop their leadership potential this year as these initiatives will strengthen our school community and provide each student with the opportunity to practise a lifelong skill which will benefit each individual now and in the years beyond Drummoyne Public School.

Selective High School Placement Test Congratulations to our 16 Year 6 students who this week sat the Selective High School Placement test at Sydney Secondary College Balmain Campus. We are pleased these students have taken the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and abilities across the curriculum. It has been wonderful to hear from these students about how they approached test day and listening to their open minded perspective on their choices and opportunities while being diligent and mature in their approach. Congratulations and best wishes to: Thomas Burns, Jacinta Cappelluto, Mika Dane, Kelly Elsey, Marirose Giann, Arosh Kafil, Arion Kalotheos, Jason Kollias, Cole Melvin, Jakub Misar, Madeleine Ng, Saskia O'Connell Locke, Zacharie Popovic Kolicic, Minal Rao, Alexa Salmon and Derek Wu. HANDS ON MATHS IN CLASS 5C

For an awesome maths project, 5C went outside to measure 1km around the school using a trundle wheel. We realised 1km was a long way. It was fun working in groups of 3 and marking the ground with chalk every 100m. I thought it was a great maths project. Leila El-Khoury 5C

THE WORLDS GREATEST SHAVE

My name is Kate. Last Wednesday I participated in the World’s Greatest Shave, which is a fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation. I shaved all my hair off to raise money for the cause. I did it because people with cancer can have a hard time, and their life could be all on the line. All the money that was raised will be donated to people who do have cancer and will really help them. Today year 5 held a crazy hair mufti day and brought in a gold coin donation to help. So far I have raised almost $3,000. Kate Randall

PSSA AFL GAME REPORT

On Wednesday 13 March, Lewis and Callum had to drive all the way to Sutherland. Why? To play AFL for the Balmain PSSA team. They played a total of 3 games and both of them played to the best of their ability but unfortunately they did not make the finals, placing 5th overall. The two boys both had an amazing day and were very

thankful for the opportunity and for their parents driving them to the venue. Lewis Walters

NAPLAN Online – information for parents and carers

Why do students do NAPLAN?The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process - it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance.

NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.

What is assessed?NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials.

In 2019 most students across Australia will sit NAPLAN online.

Feedback in the first year of NAPLAN Online showed that students engaged well with online assessments. One of the main benefits of NAPLAN Online is tailored (or adaptive) testing, where the test automatically adapts to a student’s test performance. The test presents questions of higher or lower complexity, depending ona student’s performance.

Tailored (or adaptive) testing is designed to assess a wider range of student abilities and to measure student achievement more precisely. Your child should not be concerned if they find questions more challenging than usual; they may be taking a more complex test pathway. A student’s overall NAPLAN score is based on the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly.

NAPLAN Online is not a test of keyboard skills. There are variations in how fast and well a student can type – just as there are variations in how fast and well a student can write by hand. Year 3 students will complete the writing test on paper.

To get an idea of what the online assessment looks like, visit the public demonstration site at nap.edu.au

How can I help my child prepare? Help your child prepare by reassuring them that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and by reminding them on the day to simply try their best. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the types of questions in the tests and will provide appropriate support and guidance. Ensuring students are familiar with using devices, typing on them and navigating through programs are a part of student learning and a requirement of the Australian Curriculum from the first year at school.

ACARA does not recommend excessive preparation for NAPLAN or the use of coaching providers.NAPLAN is about assessing learning progress in literacy and numeracy.

Will my child sit NAPLAN onpaper or online?

In 2019, your child will sit the NAPLAN online tests. However, children in some other schools across Australia will sit the NAPLAN paper tests this year. Federal, state and territory education ministers have agreed that all schools will move online by 2020. State and territory education authorities will determine when their schools move online.

As students are assessed on the same literacy and numeracy curriculum content, regardless of whether they complete the test online or on paper, results for both formats can be reported on the same NAPLAN assessment scale. To find out more about NAPLAN Online, visit nap.edu.au

Page 10: FRIDAY, MARCH 15 2019 TERM 1 WEEK 7 Respect Responsibility … · 2019-10-16 · Respect – Responsibility – Resilience FRIDAY, MARCH 15 2019 TERM 1 WEEK 7 TERM 1 WEEK 8 WHAT’S

Participation in NAPLAN All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to participate in the annual NAPLAN assessment.

Students with disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided for classroom assessments. You should first discuss the use of any disability adjustments for your child with your child’s teacher.

A formal exemption may be granted for a student with disability that severely limits their capacity to participate in the assessment, or for a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background.

Your school principal and your local test administration authority can give you more information on NAPLAN Online disability adjustments or the process required to gain a formal exemption.

NAPLAN Online 2019 timetableThe assessment window for NAPLAN Online is extended from three days provided for the paper test to nine days. This is to give schools more flexibility in scheduling and accommodate schools that may have fewer devices. The NAPLAN Online assessment window starts on Tuesday 14 May and finishes on Friday 24 May 2019.

The online tests must be taken in the following order:

Test Duration Order Details

Writing

Year 3: 40 min.Year 5: 40 min.Year 7: 40 min.Year 9: 40 min.

To be completed in the first two days

Year 3 students do a paper-based writing test on day one only

Year 3: 45 min. Year 5: 50 min. Year 7: 65 minYear 9: 65 min.

To be competed after the conventions of language test

This test includesnumber and algebra; measurement and geometry; and statistics and probability

What if my child is absent from school on assessment days?Where possible, schools may arrange for individual students who are absent at the time of testing to complete missed tests at another time during the school’s test schedule. Individual students are not permitted to sit NAPLAN online tests after Friday 24 May 2019.

How is my child’s performance measured?Individual student performance is shown on a national achievement scale for each assessment. A result at the national minimum standard indicates that the student has demonstrated the basic literacy and numeracy skills needed to participate fully in that year level.

A NAPLAN individual student report will be issued by your child’s school later in the year. If you do not receive a report, you should contact your child’s school.

How are NAPLAN results used?

• Students and parents may use individual resultsto discuss progress with teachers.

• Teachers use results to better identify studentswho would benefit from greater challenges orextra support.

• Schools use results to identify strengths and areasto improve in teaching programs, and to set goals inliteracy and numeracy.

• School systems use results to review programs andsupport offered to schools.

• The community can see average school NAPLANresults at myschool.edu.au

Where can I get more information? For more information about NAPLAN:

Tell Them From Me student survey:

Information and consent form for parents and carers

8th March, 2019

Dear Parents and Carers

In Term 1 2019, our school is taking part in the Tell Them From Me student survey (Years 4-6). The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help them improve. The survey is completed on-line and is run by an independent research company, The Learning Bar, which specialises in school-based surveys.

Staff in schools will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. To ensure confidentiality, participating students will receive a unique username and password. Where fewer than five students respond to a question, the results will be suppressed. The survey typically takes 30 minutes or less to complete and will be administered by the school during normal school hours

As well as schools getting student feedback, the Department of Education, through the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE), has access to data from across NSW and is running a research project to look at state-wide patterns of student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. The research is looking at how these things impact on student outcomes, including academic performance. Individual students will not be identified in any CESE publications, and all information will be handled in accordance with the relevant privacy legislation. Students’ personal information will not be disclosed by the department to any other person or body other than as required by law.

This research will help schools in New South Wales to better understand how to improve student wellbeing and engagement. It will also help teachers and principals discuss what works to improve student outcomes.

Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish. If, during the survey, your child is uncomfortable, he/she can choose to stop the survey at any time. The majority of questions in the survey can be skipped.

If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please complete the attached form and return it to your child's school by 22nd March, 2019.

Busyness seems to have become a way of life for modern families. It’s unlikely you’ll ever hear a parent talk of having plenty of free time on their hands. Unfortunately, that’s a statement unlikely to be heard from a lot of modern-day kids either.

The afternoons on family calendars are increasingly filling up with organised after-school activities, and in families with multiple children the logistics of keeping up with all this can be complicated. The strain of ferrying children back and forth, often in different directions, saps families of energy, resources and time.

We have great intentionsRecent research from the United Kingdom found that the desire for children to succeed is a strong driver for many parents, sometimes causing them to load their children up with extra-curricular activities. While the intentions are good, the method of keeping kids busy is probably questionable.

Other reasons for encouraging extra-curricular activities include: giving kids the best start in life, making friends, keeping fit and healthy, developing interests and preventing boredom. Anecdotal evidence suggests the findings are similar in Australia.

The cost of busynessWe live at a time where rates of mental illness, particularly anxiety, are climbing. One in seven Australian children have a diagnosed mental illness. That’s three in an average classroom. Many more go undiagnosed.

Rushing to activities, late nights and stressed parents aren’t the conditions for family members to enjoy flourishing mental health. Too many organised activities detract from time to hang out with friends, to comfortably complete homework tasks, to spend time with family, to get bored and, importantly, to simply play.

Free play is serious businessAuthor and research professor of psychology Dr Peter Gray attributes the rise in anxiety, depression, suicide and narcissism among children to the decline of play. Unstructured play is vital for the healthy development of children and teenagers. Through play kids learn to interact with others, develop physical skills necessary for school success and gain confidence they need to interact with peers.

How much is too much? Some children can cope with busy schedules, while others flounder. As a rule of thumb, if your child or young

person is struggling in any of these three areas: i) mental health, ii) schoolwork and studies, iii) their participation in family-life then it may be time to reduce their extra-curricular load.

Choosing the activities to omit from a schedule can be tricky, as your child or young person may have a different motivation for each. In short, each activity can be ‘the one they love.’ Here’s a good question to ask your child or young person that can make decision-making easier:

‘If all of your after-school activities were cancelled, which one(s) would you plead with me to re-enrol you in?’

Their answers will reveal a great deal about their commitment to each activity. Ideally, kids should be choosing extra-curricular activities that nourish them rather than cause anxiety and stress. Aim for two activity-free nights each week so that your child or young person can meet their study and family commitments.

The same principle for balance holds true for weekends. Make sure your kids enjoy some time free from structured activity, so they cna refresh and recharge, ready for the week of school that lays ahead

3-6 Creative Composition Classes

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

As part of the Creative Arts curriculum, in term one, years 3 to 6 will be participating in a creative composition program by external provider Jellybeans Music. The focus is on meeting the curriculum requirements by covering musical concepts through engaging students in a building and developing their musical skills. Information on this year’s program can be found overleaf. The Jellybeans music teachers are specialists in their field and are able to compact the time for students to learn the music skills required allowing the class teachers more class time to devote to the teaching of literacy and numeracy and the other key learning areas. Research into the benefits of music education in schools highlights that students who study music:

show improved academic scores,

are more co-operative,

have higher levels of self-confidence

are more able to express their ideas

have improved motivation and engagement, persistence and self-discipline. In addition, a longitudinal study in the United States, ‘Champions of Change’ found that students who participate in regular music programs are far less likely to be involved with drugs, crime or have behavioural problems. Please complete the permission note below and return it to the school office with the payment of $45 by 18 February 2019. Funds are available to support families who are experiencing financial difficulties. Please contact the school if we can help. Sincerely,

Brian J Dill
