INSIDE THIS ISSUE

The whole school production of Oliver! was a great celebration of the talent and creativity of our students and staff, but more importantly, it was built on a strong sense of collaboration and community. These moments are to be treasured, as participants experience a connectedness that grows from being part of something special. It showcased the talents of students from Years 6 to 12, both on stage and behind the scenes. None of this would be possible without the energy and commitment of a large group of staff who have worked on this together for the last 6 months. A special mention must go to Lucy Dilger, directing her first whole school production. Her vision and positive outlook made the experience a joy for all who took part. We thank all those who came along to see the show. I know that many of the cast are very sad that it’s over, and will look forward to the 2019 production.

From The Principal (continued).

The foyer is alive with scientific posters and experiments to recognise Science Week. At SAC, we have a strong tradition of nurturing our students’ interest in science from Reception to Year 12. We have a broad range of science subjects on offer in the senior years and many of our graduates pursue careers in scientific fields as a result of the seeds planted in their school years. This level of interest is fostered by teachers who are passionate about their subjects, and who always seek out new ways of engaging students in the sciences.

2017 BOOK WEEK

Escape to Everywhere is the theme for next week’s Book Week and Can Drive, and our Year 11 students are leading the charge to make this the biggest can collection ever. Books play a central role in learning, and our Catherine McAuley Library is at the heart of nurturing a love of books at SAC. Steve Graham, in a recent article in the New York Times, asked how parents might help good readers become good writers. He said, “So when we read to kids, we can also have conversations with them about the author’s craft. How did this author make this place seem real in terms of description? What words did they use? How did they present this idea or this argument?” This kind of curiosity is nurtured in our library and our classrooms, not only through encouraging reading, but also in supporting inquiry-based approaches to learning. Our SACE Research Project results indicate the critical thinking and independent learning skills that develop from Reception and come to fruition in the senior years. 85% of our Research Project candidates for 2017 were awarded A’s and B’s, indicating an understanding of the performance standard for the subject and strong research skills. In a world where multi-modal communication is more common, our students still need to know how to effectively articulate their ideas in writing, and thus the development of good readers into good writers continues to be important. We acknowledge the enormous efforts of students, teachers and support staff in achieving these excellent Research Project results.Last week we celebrated the feast of our first Australian saint, Mary of the Cross Mackillop. She was said to be an unconventional woman who had a firm belief in the power of education to transform lives. She also had great faith in God’s providence. As we educate young women here at SAC to have life, and have it to the full, we are also inspired by Mary Mackillop to help each of our students to flourish, both intellectually and personally, and be attentive to the immense love that God has for each of them.

LOTE DAY - CHINESE

On Wednesday 2 August the Chinese students had the chance to participate in a LOTE Day consisting of several cultural activities and an excursion to Chinatown. We were given the opportunity to be tutored on two key aspects of Chinese culture, calligraphy and knotting, by a few helpful volunteers from the Confucius Institute. The calligraphy included perfecting a series of Chinese writing techniques and incorporating them into some familiar characters. After recess, we ventured to Chinatown and ate some traditional Chinese dishes and were given an hour to explore an array of the fascinating cultural features. Finally, we learnt some ancient Chinese knotting techniques and made bracelets for ourselves. LOTE Day gave us all an invaluable insight into Chinese culture that we would otherwise never experience. Rebecca Shaw 10EB

An invaluable insight into Chinese Culture!

On Tuesday night of Week 3, six Year 10 French students participated in Le Super 10 French Quiz Night. Even though they faced challenges, including a lack of pens, they all made sure that they had enough food to get them through the night! The Year 10 competition was based on questions of geographycal, historycal, pop culture, sport and general knowledge of France. As the questions were posed in French, the students had to use their comprehensive skills and accumulated knowledge of the French language, as well as referring to their French exchange students for some moral support. Amongst difficult competition, their communicative and collaborative efforts paid off in the end. The St Aloysius students won first place against other participating schools and received a $60 voucher from the Intext Language International Bookshop. The students are greatly appreciative of Ms Barletta’s participation and support throughout the night. It was a fantastic, fun and culturally immersing evening. St Aloysius College School Production - Oliver!Thank you to all who attended the SAC production of Oliver! This musical followed the story of a young orphan and his quest to find his place in the world. Oliver goes from mistreatment in the London workhouses to falling in with a gang of pickpockets before finally finding a home. Students and staff dedicated themselves to countless hours of rehearsals and planning sessions to bring this powerful story to life. The SAC school spirit was evident in every aspect of this production. The camaraderie and excitement amongst cast and crew radiated from the stage. It was a pleasure to watch this talented group of students come together as one, supporting and celebrating each other’s talents.A school production this large does not happen without the ongoing support of the whole community. Many staff across year levels and faculty areas dedicated their time and expertise to help create it!I hope you had as much fun watching it as we had putting it together!

YEAR 9 WORLD WAR 1 PERFORMANCE - Fightin’ The Kaiser"The play on World War 1 was fantastic! It was great to get a further insight on what the soldiers went through. My favourite part of the play was hearing stories from different points of view and seeing the effects that PTSD can have on someone."Tegan Fitzhardy 9SC"It was a great experience. I learnt a lot about World War 1 and the effects that the Great War had on the soldiers fighting at Gallipoli. The show featured the point of view of a soldier from World War 1 in a mental institution, telling stories of his time in the war. It was a real eye opener to the experiences everyone saw." Jasmine Apostolopoulos 9SCYear 9 students with Brett Hunt

YEAR 10 HISTORY WORLD WAR 2 - Drama PerformanceWWII affected not only the men who fought, but the women too. Prior to Brett's production, I had no idea of the extent to which the women contributed to the war efforts as well as keeping Australia a well-functioning country. The aftermath of the war was to open our country to many migrants and a multicultural heritage.Sophia Briggs 10EHIn yesterday’s performance, I learnt about the people who stayed behind and their struggle. I learnt about women’s grief and their suffering due to having no closure in regard to missing persons. They believed that their friends and family members were out there somewhere and would eventually come home. Natasha Richards 10EH

Brett’s performance was very powerful as it gave us an insight into how World War 11 shaped our world and our country today. We learnt a lot about the women’s roles when the men went to war as they took control and went through a lot of hardship. This showed they were able to complete a lot more ‘hands on’ jobs than people thought they could do. Women were valued far beyond their domestic roles. Manar Eldeeb, Tully Williams & Lara Kellermann Clarke 10EHThe performance the year 10s watched yesterday was a moving show that showed the reality of WW11. Although I knew previously the majority of the themes talked about, I was enlightened about the war brides and ambiguous loss. The impacts of war are felt over generations. Ruby Roberts 10EH

VISUAL ARTS

Over the last month the art department has been busy with a range of activities to celebrate the South Australian Living Artists festival (SALA) and of course creating sets and props for the performance of Oliver!

Ms Michelle BarrattVISUAL ARTS COORDINATOR

Term 3 - Art

Earlier in the year the team of art teachers worked with Ms Lucy Dilger to design the sets for SAC’s production of Oliver! Led by Ms Tunney, a group of teachers and students worked to create props, paint props and the stunning city backdrop. The enthusiasm and energy of the team was infectious and it was great to join together and use our varied skills to create such a stunning set for the production. Special thanks to Andrew Groth for the creation of the wooden backdrop and Ms Tunney who led the group with outstanding organisation and dedication.

Creating the Sets for Oliver!

On Friday 4 August the senior Art students and Art teachers kicked off the SALA month of festivities with the opening of the annual Secondary Drawing Exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia. SAC students had sixteen drawings displayed; created in the practical workshops that they attended in Term 2 at the Art Gallery. The students, parents and teachers who attended the event were struck by the skill demonstrated in the range of life and portrait drawings exhibited. We were all very excited when Year 12 Art student Brianna Roy 12CW was awarded a certificate and a $100 prize for her sensitive and mature figure study.

Secondary Drawing Exhibition

The SALA celebrations continued on Friday 11 August when Ms O’Reilly, myself and fifteen senior Art students attended the Art Careersfest at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Over the day we were fascinated to hear about the journeys of a range of people who have created careers in the visual arts. Through listening to presentations by a painter, street artist, jeweller, curator, textile conservator, theatre designers, community arts officer, gallery director and more, we discovered the diversity of careers available in the arts. Most importantly we discovered the richness of doing something you love and are passionate about as a career. The students were also given an insight into the challenges of a career in the arts and advice on how to get your foot in the door and carve out a career path by following what makes you excited. It was an inspiring day and we would like to thank the education officers at the Art Gallery of South Australia for giving us this opportunity.

"The day gave me an insight into careers I had never heard of before." Adilya Fitzgerald 10EH "I learnt that a career in Art can be hard." Ella Grantham 12LN"Always follow what you love to do and you will find your way. Don’t give up; it takes time to reach your goal." Farwa Rasuli 10EH

Art Careersfest

Over the last few weeks the Year 10 students have broadened their understanding of Art and Design through visits to exhibitions. The Year 10 Design students began their study of Graphic Design by viewing the stunning array of posters at the Refugee Poster Exhibition. They are currently designing and creating their own refugee posters inspired by the work they saw on display. With the enthusiasm and creativity with which they are tackling the task it would not be surprising to see some of their posters chosen for next years exhibition. The Year 10 Art students started their term off with an excursion to study portraiture and contemporary artworks at the Ramsey Prize exhibit at the Art Gallery of South Australia. In Week 4 they will be exploring the work of contemporary portrait artists at the SALA exhibition of the Royal Society of the Arts biannual portrait prize. In the coming weeks the Year 11 Design class will be studying architecture through a visit to the SAMRI building on North Terrace.

MATHS STUDENT QUIZ NIGHT (YEAR 10-12)On Wednesday 9 August, 24 Year 10-12 students participated in the annual MASA Student Quiz Night at Blackfriars Priory College. This year St Aloysius College entered one Junior team and four Senior teams. Each team (made up of 4 students) were required to answer a series of maths, general knowledge and logic puzzle based questions over a two hour period. Students excitedly answered questions and brought snacks with them to sustain their energy levels. Each team participated with a spirit of fun and were great ambassadors for St Aloysius College. A big thank you to Mr Thomas Cotton who generously gave up his time to encourage students on the night.

Ms Frances DelfinMATHEMATICS COORDINATOR

We believe the MASA Quiz Night was not only about getting correct answers, it highlighted the importance of communication between team members. It was a chance for us to improve our cooperation and interaction skills by working in a group. We would definitely enter a team again next year as the MASA Quiz Night is not just about general knowledge and utilising mathematical skills, but it also enhances your abilities to work with peers. Auieghne Diza 11FD & Khanh Vy Nguyen 11FDThis night provided us with an opportunity to further strengthen existing relationships between our classmates, whilst competing against like-minded students from other schools in a competitive yet friendly and energetic environment. As senior students, the quiz night provided an invaluable chance to utilise the problem solving skills we have been developing in the classroom this year. Emilee Ong 12RTAmidst the hectic school year, there is only one event where friends, maths, and pizza come together: the annual MASA Student Quiz Night. The support from our teachers encouraged us to put our minds together to solve puzzles and general knowledge questions, allowing us to challenge ourselves while working as a team. Chieh-Ju (Trinity) Liao 11FDAs an international student, fully understanding all the questions challenged me the most as there were lots of technical terms. Despite this challenge, there were also new knowledge I gained, which will benefit me greatly next year. Thao Phan 11ABOur team enjoyed the many challenges but most of all, it was fun to be around so many students who shared an interest in Mathematics. Year 12 Senior Team D

New SAC Student Tech Executive Group

This term we have developed a new initiative which has replaced our Tech Rep Group. Previously, students in Year 4 to Year 7 could apply to be a Tech Rep. Being a Tech Rep involved attending weekly meetings, supporting peers and staff during class time and organising lunchtime activities such as Minecraft club. Our new initiative was open for all students in Year 4 to 10 to express an interest in being part of the team. I am pleased to announce the following students who have been selected as the SAC Tech Executive Group:• Eva Dimmell 4SL• Emma Fyfe 4GB• Milla Lokhort 5JN• Sydney Villis-Chatfield 5JA• Alisha Chanda 6MP• Kira Loh 6MP• Madlin Overton 9NW• Charlotte Dirk 9NW• Georgina Perrotta 9AW• Xuan Nan (Katey Jun) 10LTWe aim to work as a dynamic and creative team in order to develop resources and support the school community.

Regarding final exams, we would like to stress the following points:• Some non-exam subjects will require students to be at school

after Friday 27 October. These arrangements will be made between the teachers and students concerned.

• Correct school uniform must be worn to all exams.• Students must make sure they attend their exams at the correct

time on the correct day.• Morning exams begin at 9am and afternoon exams begin at

1:30pm• Students should be at school at least 15 minutes before an exam

is scheduled to begin. • The Examination Attendance Slip should be brought to all exams.• If a student cannot attend an exam for some reason, or is likely

to be late, it is important that someone contacts the school (8217 3200) to give details.

Between now and the end of year, Year 12s will need our support and encouragement. Deadlines for many major assessment tasks are approaching. The September holidays and early Term 4 will be critical times for revision and exam preparation. Along with subject teachers and home class teachers we are here to assist students in their progression through these final stages of the year. Communication is the key to success in Year 12 and there is still time to improve outcomes.Year 12s are also making decisions about pathways beyond 2017. Each student has a SATAC University guide to assist them. It is best to make UniWeb applications as soon as possible and certainly before Friday 29 September (otherwise late fees apply). Preferences can be changed later. TafeSA applications are also now open. Finally, we would like to recognise the perseverance and commitment our Year 12 students have shown in their studies. We look forward to celebrating their achievements together at the Graduation Mass and Graduation Dinner (information about which will be available soon).

YOUNG FEMALE ENGINEERSAn engineer is a person who designs, constructs and tests structures. This is exactly what Year 5 students have been doing. Before designing their own inventions, students explored the qualities of an engineer. They decided that in order to be an engineer you need to have to ask 'why?' or 'why not?' You have to be creative, use Maths skills, be able to build things,as well as listen and solve problems. Furthermore, you have to accept that things don’t always work out and your invention might be a failure, but failure is OK.

Ms Joanne VillisPRIMARY ICT COORDINATOR

Piper's Illustration"I illustrated the qualities of my brain."

Gabriella’s Hot Sockz"The purpose of this invention is for people to have warm feet, especially in winter. It helps the community by reducing the amount of electricity that is currently being used. Stitched to the socks are heat bags which you place in the microwave and heat. When I tried this at home it stank really bad, so I added some eucalyptus oil."

Laura’s Headphones"I designed this because I get sick of my headphone getting tangled in my laptop case. I made it using short pieces of straws which allows them to bend but not tangle."

Morgan's Daily Keys App"I made my first app. The purpose of my app is to help you find your keys. You can enter your own data into the app, storing information about how many different types of keys you have. I used AppyPie.com to build my app."

Charlotte’s Bed Quilt 2000"I designed this quilt because I don't like it when your quilt falls of your bed when you are sleeping. On either side of the quilt there is velcro which sticks down to a velcro strip on your bed. This way your quilt never falls off and if you have to go to the toilet at night, you unstick the velcro and then stick it back down when you go back to bed."

Alena’s Fizzy Electric Cushion"It was designed for people who

have back pain. The cushion is adjustable and massages your

back to put out all the pain."

Johanna’s Lock-it Pocket"The Lock-it Pocket provides safety when storing the consumer’s money and/or small items. Without the key or passcode, the Lock-it Pocket is almost impossible to open."

Dior's Cube Rest"The Cube Rest can be sat on,

stood on or wheeled around. It also has built-in shelves for storage. My Nonno helped me build it.

However, when I was making it, I accidently drilled a hole in Mum’s

outdoor table. Sorry Mum!"

Meera's Lights Out"I designed this product as I wanted to help kids to remember to turn their lights out. The Lights Out talks to people just as they exit the room. For example, if someone was just about to leave the room it would say, “Are you forgetting something? Turn off your lights,” in a loud voice."

Olivia's Sleepy Pillow"The pillow is for when you are travelling in a car and it is attachable to the car’s headrests. Simply attach the pillow using the strap. The pillow come fitted with a speaker, head phones slot and operating buttons. It also comes with an app so that you can create your own playlist."

Meghana's 'Super Safe' Safe"The benefit of this invention is that normal safes only have one lock, whereas this one has four including voice recognition, finger print lock, a combination lock and an electric code."

STUDY TOURS FUNOver the last few weeks, some primary classes have hosted guests from China. Our young guests are visiting us as part of their study tour in Adelaide. From New Hyde School we've had four guests, these girls joined us over three weeks. Students from 6MP hosted Fiona and Betty and 7SS hosted Fancy and Crystal. These girls have had a wonderful time building friendships and experiencing school life in Australia. The teachers and students in these classes have warmly welcomed our guests. I would particularly like to thank our guests' SAC buddies, Claudia Bressan, Freya Milne and Annabel Wark 6MP and Charli Horne and Georgia Psarros 7SS. These girls have supported our visitors with kindness and care making their visit to our school so memorable. The Year 3 classes had a very special one-day visit from eight young girls from Amaxgrace School on Thursday of Week 3. Our girls and our Chinese visitors experienced a fun day getting to know each other and learning about life in Australia and China. Highlights of the day were interactive activities, watching the SAC performance of Oliver and creating beautiful panda and koala paintings. Throughout the day our guests were very well looked after by their very enthusiastic SAC buddies, Skye Laura Christensen, Ahruzoo Sarway, Melody Tabbernal Jasmine Smith, Abbegail Kummerow, Zoe Miles, Matisse Gibbs, Anni Liao.
