Успішні Річні Загальні Збори Конґресу Українців Канади відбулися в Ванкувері

“As of September 1, Canadian Armed Forces’ Joint TaskForce-Ukraine has trained more than 5580 Ukrainiansoldiers in over 140 courses. On my most recent trip to LvivI saw the ways the soldiers from Ukraine and Canada arebenefitting from the knowledge and experience from eachother. It is tremendous to see,” stated Minister Sajjan. “Weare cautiously optimistic about a potential peacekeepingmission in Ukraine, if there is the right mandate, and ifUkraine has a strong voice to ensure its needs are met –and that is very critical – that Ukraine’s needs are met.”

UCC President testifies at Defence Committee

On October 23, UCC National President Paul Grod testified at theHouse of Commons Standing Committee on National Defenceduring their study on Canada and Ukraine. Grod spoke about thepossibility of the deployment of a UN peacekeeping mission toeastern Ukraine. He stated that any such mission “must bedeployed to the entire territory of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. Itmust involve the withdrawal of all Russian troops and mercenariesand their weapons from Ukrainian territory. And it must bedeployed to the Russia-Ukraine border in order to prevent Russianmilitary, weapons and equipment from again infiltrating Ukrainianterritory. It goes without saying that Russia, as an aggressor state, cannot have its personnel on the mission.”

Grod called on Canada to take the lead in the internationalcommunity, stating, “Canada is uniquely placed to be a geopoliticalleader for such an approach and to also to lead an eventual UNpeacekeeping mission. We have a long and proud history ofparticipation in peacekeeping operations and we have theinternational credibility to rally support for such a plan.”

Magnitsky Act now the Law of the Land in Canada

On October 18, S-226 the Justice for Victims of Corrupt ForeignOfficials Act (Sergei Magnitsky Law). The law allows Canada totarget foreign officials who are responsible for human rightsabuses and corruption by implementing asset freezes and travelbans against them. It is an important signal to the world thatCanada will not tolerate the violation of internationally recognizedhuman rights, and that officials who violate those rights are notwelcome in Canada.

The UCC advocated for the adoption of a Magnitsky Act inCanada. Russia continued to demonstrate its abject contempt forinternational law and human rights standards. There are currentlyover 40 Ukrainian citizens illegally imprisoned by Russia. It iscritical that the Government of Canada move swiftly to implementsanctions against Russian individuals and organizationsresponsible for violations of international law and the rights ofUkrainian citizens.

UCC testifies at Foreign Affairs Committee

On March 23, UCC CEO Ihor Michalchyshyn and UCC Senior PolicyAdvisor Orest Zakydalsky testified at the House of CommonsStanding Committee on Foreign Affairs and InternationalDevelopment during the Committee’s hearings on the Situationin Eastern Europe and Central Asia 25 Years after the End of theCold War.

Michalchyshyn and Zakydalsky stressed the importance of Canadacontinuing to play a leading role in the international community’ssupport for Ukraine while Ukraine defends itself against Russia’saggression. They called for Canada to provide Ukraine withdefensive weapons and significantly strengthen sectoral economicsanctions against Russia and personal sanctions against Russianofficials responsible for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Prime Minister visits Canada

Interview with Halyna Paliychuk, UCC ParliamentaryIntern

Tell us about yourself?

I was born and raised in Kyiv, where I got my Master's degreein Law. I continued my postgrad education in University ofOslo, Lund University and University of British Columbia. I'vebeen working since my second year at Law school in the fieldof human rights. My hobby is writing. I have my own blog, three published books and a few publications in poetrycollections. I also do a lot of social work and like to beactively involved in community life.

What have you learned about Canada’s Parliament?

The most interesting thing I've learned about the Parliamentis that teamwork is essential here for effective leadership andgovernance. All team players have specific functions, buttogether they create a very effective mechanism. Moreover, the interaction between team players is incredible. I've noticedthat to succeed in a career here, you have to be humble, butat the same time very pro-active.

Tell us about some of the people you’ve met?

I meet exciting people every day. Having lunch at the tablenext to Ministers of International Development, Defence, orTransport, or sharing an elevator with MPs and having ashort chat with them is a common thing for me here. Iremember once I was heading home and met Justin Trudeauface to face at the door, and he said "Hi!" That was sounexpected!

What are you thinking about doing after the internship?

After the internship I would like to stay and work in theParliament or Government within Global Affairs. Being a veryinternational-oriented person, to realize my professional andleadership potential in international politics, internationalbusiness or international NGO sectors was always my dream.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) Canada 150 project,Youth Engaging Youth, has been a resounding success! This springand summer across Canada, we've organized over fifty eventsinvolving thousands of participants, bringing together UkrainianCanadian youth with youth from across Canada. Thank you to theDepartment of Canadian Heritage for their partnership funding ofthis significant initiative. Our dynamic youth projects have included concerts, sportingevents and cultural celebrations. We've run intercultural danceand art camps as well as workshops showcasing Ukrainian folk arttraditions. Partnerships with Canada's Indigenous Peoples havebuilt bridges of understanding and friendship. Discussions ofchallenging social issues have helped us better understand theexperiences of our fellow Canadians such as refugees and newimmigrants. Indeed, Ukrainian Canadian youth have shown howthey actively participate and celebrate Canada's multiculturalsociety.Planning for a special Canada 150 project began nearly two yearsago when Andrea Kopylech, chair of the Ukrainian Canadian ArtsNetwork (UCAN), brought together a group of community leadersto generate ideas. Led by Paul Migus and assisted by Jane Kolbe,Andriy Sawchuk, Borys Gengalo and others, the group set to workdeveloping a concept. The Canadian government accepted theUCC proposal for our community to take an active role in theCanada 150 celebrations. This past spring UCC hired five Community Animators to bringthese ideas to life, and in this bulletin you can see the great resultsof their work. We congratulate everyone involved, especially themany youth who participated in our Canada 150 events whichtruly demonstrated our community's commitment to amulticultural Canada.

Celebrating Milestones2018 will mark two important milestones for SUSK - not onlyhas it been 50 years since the first Student issue was published, next year will also mark the 65th anniversary of SUSK. Over theyears, SUSK’s activity has seen substantial movements ofactivism, but also periods of inactivity. SUSK is fortunate to havebroken out of its dormancy since 2007 with steady growth. Thelast year and this upcoming year are some of our mostimportant years yet - reviving/building even more clubs acrossCanada and also diversifying revenue streams to even outsidethe Ukrainian community. Stay tuned for some updates as wecelebrate these anniversaries in style.

A New YearThe new 2017-18 executive has been active across Canada. InSeptember, the executive had the chance to meet PrimeMinister Justin Trudeau, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko,as well as various Cabinet Ministers. SUSK also made a specialvisit to Barrie Ontario to help establish a new club comprisedof recent newcomers who look forward to a very promisingyear. The SUSK executive and staff have collectively managedto meet student clubs in each province this year!
