THE ESPERANCE EXPRESS, Friday, December 4, 2015 3 NEWS By HALEY BAKER TO ensure all Esperance chil- dren have a present to unwrap on Christmas day, locals are being encouraged to donate toys for children less fortunate this Christmas. In its sixth year, the Ag and Trade Christmas Toy Ride, for- merly known as the Bay Automotive Christmas Toy Run, will take place next Sa- turday in a bid to collect toys for underprivileged children in Esperance. Participants will meet on Saturday, December 12 at the Esperance Bay Turf Club at 10.30am for an 11am start. Ag and Trade manager David Clarkson said all com- munity members could get involved with the event by either dropping a gift off at Ag & Trade or taking part in the ride. “It’s not only for bikers, clas- sic vintage cars will also be coming along,” he said. “They’ll do a ride around the tourist loop, then around town and will finish up here [Ag & Trade] at about 12.30pm. “The gifts that are donated by the riders and the general public will be collected and dis- tributed by Hope Foundation, who’ll wrap them and hand them out locally.” He said Ag & Trade was more than happy to continue the event that Bay Automotive began five years ago. “Bay Automotive has held it for the previous five years and with the demise of them we were approached by a local bik- ers association and RadioWest if we would take it on, which we were more than happy to do because it’s a worthy cause,” he said. “This is for kids that don’t look like they’ll be getting a Christmas present this year, so it’s a great cause. “Donating a $5-$10 present is nothing.” Mr Clarkson said those wish- ing to participate in the ride needed to register at Ag & Trade the day before the event. He said all riders would be offered tickets for a free drink and band at the Travellers Inn from 1pm. “A lady came in and donated her own bear collection, all in pristine condition, and put them under the Christmas tree here at Ag & Trade,” he said. “It was fantastic and all for a good cause so that kids don’t miss out.” To register for the ride or for more information all Ag & Trade on 9072 0011. Fire closes ‘unsafe’ Jetty By KRISTIN MACFARLANE and SARAH CORRIDON A FIRE has broken out on the Tanker Jetty on the same day it was announced to be closing due to safety issues. The fire broke out on the right jetty pylons before 6pm on Tuesday, near a gate that had been erected to keep members of the public out. Visitor Adrian Wait said he could smell smoke about 5.30pm and when he went to inspect, he found part of the jetty on fire. He said firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after 6pm. Once the fire was out the jetty was inspected by Shire of Esperance staff and only minor damage was found. The jetty was closed at the time of the fire and no members of the public were on the jetty. The Shire of Esperance announced the Tanker Jetty had to be closed on Tuesday due to it get- ting a risk assessment of ‘Ex- treme’. It would not reopen to the pub- lic until remedial works could be undertaken. The closure is due to a recent structural assessment that had dis- covered vital structural compo- nents had failed, with others about to fail in at least four locations along the length of the jetty. A draft report from coastal engineers BMT JFA Consultants has been received that recom- mends immediate closure of the Tanker Jetty due to a risk assess- ment rating of Extreme. Shire president Victoria Brown Tanker Jetty safety issues Cracking of the deck concrete topping. Rot and deterioration of deck planks. Rot and deterioration of stringers. Rot and crushing of corbels. Corrosion and section loss bolts and other steelwork. said the Shire had reviewed the report and Council would con- sider the full implications of the report at the December council meeting. “We cannot allow the public on the jetty knowing the struc- tural issues currently faced,” she said. The jetty was subject to a high level condition inspection in accordance with the Ports Australia Wharf Structure Condition Assessment Man- ual’s (WSCAM) procedures. It has been determined the jetty is no longer structurally sound for pedestrian traffic. Cr Brown said the majority of the structural issues were not immediately visible as they were below the water level or beneath the deck of the jetty. “Council has a legal respon- sibility to make sure communi- ty assets meet minimum safety requirements and unfortunately the Tanker Jetty does not meet those requirements.” The initial condition assess- ment of the jetty indicates potential repair costs will run in to the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Minister for Regional Dev- elopment Terry Redman said keeping facilities such as the Tanker Jetty open for commu- nity use was vital. “I’ve been on that jetty and I know how much people enjoy it and I know it’s a part of the broader town development that the Shire are putting forward,” he said. “We’ve got a big state in Western Australia and obvious- ly there are priorities as we move forward, but there’s no doubt that we need to make sure in the future we have icon- ic facilities like that jetty alive and open for the community to be able to use.” Hot work: Firefighters put out the fire at the Tanker Jetty on Tuesday evening.
