MAYOR’S REPORTI am grateful to my fellow Town Councillors for electing me to Town Mayor and Chairman of the Town Council for the year ahead. I previously had the honour of being Town Mayor in 2014/15 so at least have a head start and I also remember, with pleasure, the friendships I made with representatives from other local communities. I hope more of the same will be forthcoming this time around.

I must take this opportunity to thank Town Councillor Dawn Spurling for her past year as Needham Market Town Mayor and Chairman of the Town Council. Dawn took on her role as Town Mayor without first serving as deputy, therefore straight into the role “stone cold”. Nevertheless, Dawn admirably managed to hit the ground running (well at least jogging). Dawn has performed her duties to the best of her abilities and, I might add, often at short notice. Thank you Dawn for your service to Needham Market; I hope I’m able to honour the role in the same manner this year.

Onto Town business, the Needham Market Neighbourhood Plan is progressing and slowly taking shape. Thank you, in particular, to those who have participated in recent consultation events.

The Town Council is aware there is to be a new Visitor Centre created at Needham Lake. This has been keenly awaited and will, I’m sure, attract more visitors to the Lake and should have a positive knock-on effect on our High Street businesses.

The recent Annual Art Show did very well and saw many people coming through the Community Centre doors.

The Craft Fair follows in early June and is always well attended. The quality of what local craft people produce never ceases to amaze me. Their work is often outstanding and, at the same time, attractively priced. Father’s Day is not too far away if you wish to buy a locally produced handmade one-off gift for that event.

The former car showroom site in the centre of town has, at long last been demolished and plans have yet to be received for a replacement building. I have been assured that something special is being designed for that location, so ‘watch that space’.

Clubs & CommunityNEEDHAM MARKET W.I.Our talk in April on gardening tips was very interesting and informative and I hope you all enjoyed the Art Show - we were kept busy serving tea and cake over the weekend. Our meeting this month is a cookery demonstration that we are all looking forward to seeing.

Now windmill news - as I explained last month we are making a windmill as part of the centenary celebrations for the Suffolk East Federation. We had a working party last week when Hazel, who’s in charge, showed us the windmill she’d made and explained what we had to do. I don’t want to give too much away but we spent the morning wrestling with needles and wool - mostly with success after a few setbacks - and I think it’s fair to say that we went off to the Lion for lunch with an air of satisfaction. Our windmill will be on display in the window of Lilac and Lily’s from the beginning of June - many thanks to them for allowing us to use their premises - and I hope you will stop and have a look at it when you’re in the High Street and also keep an eye open when you’re elsewhere in East Suffolk for other W.I. Windmills.

We meet at the community centre on the second Monday in the month at 7.30pm and would love to welcome you to our meeting.

NEEDHAM IN BLOOMThe plants for the High Street containers have been ordered and, by the time you read this, the pansies will have gone. They have given us a really good display this spring, but it is now time to give way to the summer flowers, which should be planted at the beginning of June. If we have a long hot summer like last year a lot of watering will be required. If you are able to help with this, please call the number below. Hopefully, we will have replaced the Barretts Lane corner baskets, and the containers at each end of the town.

Some new plants will also be going in the Sensory Garden, so take a rest on the bench there, and enjoy it.

We will always welcome new members, so if you would like to join us, or offer help, please contact Vera on 723424.

NEEDHAM MARKET BOWLS CLUBThe indoor season at the Meadlands has now finished. Congratulations to Brian Locksmith, John Milliard and Margaret Thorndyke for their ‘Buzzard’ team winning the Birdie league Division C, and well played to my own teams ‘Churnet’ and ‘Grouse’ for finishing second in both their competitions. The Stowmarket League outdoor season is now in full swing except for Monday evenings which, at the time of writing, have not yet started.

Tuesday teams have had mixed results; the A team have won both their games while the B team have lost two very close games in their first year in the first division. The C team have won one and lost one. The Wednesday team have started strongly in defence of their title, winning at Walsham 6 ½ - ½ points before losing a very tight game to Gipping Valley 4 – 3 points. Our Thursday team is enjoying their bowling and hoping for an improvement on last years results.

We have been congratulated on the condition of the green, so a big thank you to John Cook, Trevor Harvey, Alistair Bailie and all the other volunteers for their work over the winter months.

The draw for the club Pairs and Triples has been made. Please consult the noticeboard to see who you are playing with and against. A date for the finals day has yet to be arranged. Any suggestions for events to fill up the day should be forwarded to Alistair. Roving jack or a singles competition have been suggested - you need to do something to earn your ‘bacon sarnies’.

Dates for your diaries

Sunday 9th June: friends and family barbeque

Sunday 21st July: presidents day - a presidents team versus a captains team. Teams are drawn on the day.

There will be two friendly matches against Coney Weston, date yet to be confirmed.

Anyone wishing to discuss any aspect of NMBC can contact either Alistair Bailie on 01449 720759 or Pat Hadden 01473 831308.

NEEDHAM MARKET AND DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETYIn May, a packed Burton Room welcomed Ian Seager with his slide show of dry garden and drought-resistant plants. This was appropriate, as our gardens seem to become dryer each year, and planting schemes will need to be changed. Luckily, there are many plants that will be happy in dry conditions. On Sunday 2nd June there will be an afternoon outing to Moverons, Brightlingsea, followed by an evening visit to Larks Hill, Tuddenham St Martin on the 27th June. In July, on the 18th, there will be a day trip to Woburn Abbey Gardens. The next evening talk is on June 6th, and will be by Dr Ian Bedford from the John Innes Institute on the subject of “Butterflies, and garden plants to attract them”. July 4th will see Colin Ward with “Ferns, 50 Shades of Green”.

Meetings are usually held on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30 in the Community Centre. We have varied, interesting and entertaining speakers, refreshments and a bring-and-buy plant stall. We also organise coach trips and evening visits to local places of interest. If you are interested, just turn up at one of the meetings or visit the website – www.nmdhs.onesuffolk.net.

JOINT CHILDREN’S PROJECT WITH NEEDHAM LIBRARY, MASSACHUSETTSRecently, at Needham Market library, we had the opportunity to be part of a group of young people aged between 5 and 12 years, and participate in many art-based activities alongside the Needham library in Massachusetts, USA. Every two weeks we got together and individually used a different medium of art to create various objects/buildings/birds within Needham Market. We did ink printing to make buildings, felt and foam to create birds that we can see, wire model making of an activity/object at Needham Lake and stained glass window creations of a club/activity in which we take part. We would then bring all that session’s art together. At the very last session we got together to Skype the children at the library in Needham, Massachusetts. We each had something to show of our artwork and an accompanying piece of writing to read to the children.

This was an amazing chance to express our love of art in many different forms and socialise with others across the world.

CommunityNEEDHAM MARKET NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCHOur meeting in early May was well attended. We had guest speakers from NatWest Bank and Trading Standards informing us how to deal with scammers, rogue traders and doorstep knocker. I’m sure that the people who came went away much the wiser. The scammers that carry out these crimes have no conscience whatsoever; their main objective is to steal as much money as they can and unfortunately it is the elderly that are their main target. In Needham Market more than 30% of the population are over the age of 60 - that’s more than 1500 of us. For that reason, I make no apologies for once again returning to the subject. It’s not that we are less careful than anybody else, it’s just that we are mostly a generation that trusts people and are of the opinion that most people who phone us up or knock at our door are genuine. Unfortunately, it couldn’t be further from the truth, nowadays we have to be suspicious of any unknown person who knocks at our door or phones us up unannounced.

If it’s a phone call from a stranger, don’t even confirm your name; just ask them for the purpose of their call, say no thank you and put the phone down without waiting for a reply. The longer you talk to these criminals, the more information you are giving them and it could be asking for trouble. They are very clever and slowly but surely build up a profile of you, and it opens the door for further calls in the future. Treat doorstep knockers with the same contempt: tell them you are not interested and politely tell them to leave. Rogue traders are also criminals that we need to be aware of. They knock at your door saying they are working close by and noticed that your roof has a few tiles out of place and needs repairing or they have spare building material available and could repair your fence or driveway at a knockdown price. Do not be tempted; again say no thank you and close the door. If you are at all worried that you have given away vital information or have committed to having work done, speak to somebody you know, a neighbour, a friend or a relative. Fortunately, Needham Market is a caring community, and so there is always somebody close by you can talk to.

CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFELINE & CHARITY SHOPAs the date of the group arrival approaches we would like to say a very big thank you to all of our supporters who have helped to make this years visit possible. Sixteen children arrive on June 30th and another group will travel to join us on 10th July. We give as much support as possible to the children, their families at home and also the host families who take the children in for the whole month; the donations and support we receive from our local community form a great part of this support. The main purpose of the children’s visit is for health recuperation but it is brilliant that we can also give them memories to take home that will last a lifetime!

We are always happy to continue to receive donations of good quality second hand clothing (although of course new is always welcome!). Any age is appreciated as we provide clothing to the children when they come here and also to their siblings at home. The priority though must be for the visiting group who urgently need clothing in the sizes 6-7, 7-8, 8-9 and 9-10. Many people have dropped donations into our shop but not left their details, so I have been unable to write personally to thank you. If you prefer to remain anonymous then of course we respect this, but I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge how grateful we are for your contributions.

The shop provides a great focal point for us and helps to raise awareness for our work. Although we have links across the country we are not a national chain of shops. All staff are unpaid volunteers. We really do need people who are able to offer a few hours a week to help out - no experience is necessary and you’re never on your own. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. Please drop in and have chat when you are passing.

Many thanks to everyone for their continued support.

Needham Market Town Council NewsNeedham Market Annual Town Meeting 2019The meeting took place at Needham Market Community Centre on 29th April and was well attended by representatives from a wide range of Community organisations and groups who each gave a report on their respective organisation/group activities over the past year.

Needham Market Annual Town Council MeetingThe meeting took place at Needham Market Community Centre on 15th May. The first item of business was the election of the Town Mayor/Chairman of Council for 2019/20. Dawn Spurling, the outgoing incumbent graciously handed over the reins to Steve Phillips. Steve has previously undertaken the Mayoral/Chairman role and therefore hits the road running. Steve has also recently been elected as a Mid Suffolk District Councillor for the local Ward and he now serves in both District Council and Town Council positions, as does fellow District/Town Councillor Mike Norris. Following the first item, Town Councillor David Campbell was elected to serve as Deputy Town Mayor and Deputy Chairman of the Town Council for 2019/20.

Co-option to Town CouncilWith one vacant seat on the Town Council following the recent nomination process, Town Councillors remain able to consider co-opting to that seat, up to 24th June, using a simplified process. If you are interested in being co-opted onto the Town Council, please contact me (contact details are shown on the inside front cover of the newsletter) before 19th June.

Netting of Trees and HedgerowsYou may recognise this issue from recent media reports, that expose the practice adopted by some property developers, whereby trees and hedges are covered with netting designed to prevent birds from nesting there. A member of the public raised the issue at a recent Town Council meeting and Councillors agreed it should be included as a Newsletter item, to raise awareness in the town, as well as encouraging residents to report the practice should they encounter it. If any case is referred to the Town Council it will be reported on to the relevant authority. There is a related and current petition on the UK Government and Parliament ‘Petitions’ website.

Gipsy Lane Crossing – Public HearingNetwork Rail has been moving towards its objective to close the over-rail pedestrian crossing at Gipsy Lane for several years. Progress on bringing forward proposals to resolve a range of issues relating to the intended closure has been painfully slow and, costly. There is a subsequent Public Hearing taking place, from Tuesday 4th June at Creeting St Mary village Hall, that will look into the acceptability and feasibility of proposals put forward that would lead to the closure of the crossing and rerouting of the public footpath along which the crossing is located. Details of the hearing are posted on sign boards along the footpath route. Transport is being provided to assist any interested parties from Needham Market to get to the hearing venue.

NEEDHAM MARKET NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

Public Consultation Event Saturday 30th March 2019 ‘Post-it’ Notes Summary

Those who attended the Consultation event will remember that comments could be left about each section of the presentation on ‘Post-It’ notes. We thought it would be useful to share all these comments. All of them have value in helping to assess how we, as a town, would like Needham Market to be taken forward.

The Way Forward:

1. Town centre retail facilities to suit growth and demographic

2. Potential impact of relief road on town centre traders

3. Link to the A14 is needed

4. Will the NP serve a purpose or will MSDC and SCC dictate the future of the town

5. Barking Road is unsuitable for a junction with the relief road

6. Relief Road being used as an excuse for large scale growth

7. Date for the relief road?

Education

1. Questioning of the logic of the outcome of Suffolk County Council’s SOR on the town e.g. missed opportunities and the inadequacies of Bosmere Primary School for the future

2. Impact of inadequate funding on management and operation of school transport

3. Where would a new primary school be located

4. Schools need suitable facilities for transport, particularly pupil drop off/pickup

5. Recruiting proficient teachers into increased education provision in this area may be an issue

6. Will the town ‘qualify’ for a High School with existing High Schools in the area full or filling up

7. Relationship with High Schools transport is a factor

Business & Development

1. Could a rail-freight facility be created to decrease HGV traffic

2. Encouraging green transport should be included but Barking Road is unsuitable for cycling

3. Current High Street retail provision is insufficient for family weekly needs and therefore larger retail outlets on the fringe of the town should be encouraged

4. NP must protect the High Street/Conservation area including imposing a 20mph speed limit

Sports & Leisure

1. Current green spaces need to be maintained plus provision for more

2. Safe routes for adult and children to use for cycling and walking are very important

3. An indoor facility for children to use for sport/leisure during the winter months is needed

4. The Needham Market Newsletter is informative and it should continue to be delivered as it is now

Community

14 Needham Market Newsletter June 19

5. How will the Town Council promote eco-friendly homes and lifestyles

6. Parents should be encouraged to walk their children to Bosmere Primary School

7. Walking routes beyond the relief road should be maintained

8. The town needs a swimming pool – Stowmarket Leisure Centre is already inadequate

9. The ponds off Hurstlea Road are a disgrace

10. More public transport in the evenings is needed

11. More play areas are needed

12. A canopy providing shelter at Crowley Park would be welcomed

13. Additional car parking is needed to support the High Street

Transport

1. An effective link road direct to the A14 is urgently needed

2. Railway station should be accessible to all

3. There are no cycle racks in the High Street

4. The creation of the relief road will decrease traffic in the High Street or, conversely will increase traffic in the High Street

5. The effect of the creation of the relief road on the High Street should not be an assumption but made subject to a proper assessment

6. Public Transport in the evening is needed for both work and leisure purposes

7. The High Street should have a 20mph speed limit

8. Pressure should be exerted on Suffolk County Council to fund what is needed

9. Rather than a relief road, should any new road be a simple feeder road to new developments

10. The High Street is an unsafe environment for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly for vulnerable people

11. The routing and flow of traffic off the relief road on the Ipswich side needs careful consideration

12. Train services need to be improved

Housing

1. Affordable should be the priority and developers viability claims against full provision resisted

2. Social housing is not ‘affordable’ (e.g. if on minimum wage)

3. One and two bed houses are needed

4. More sheltered housing adjacent to the High Street would be sensible

5. A good mix of housing is required

6. How can developers be bound into provide the housing the local community says it needs/wants

7. Thought should be given to provision of retail facilities to support housing growth

8. Brownfield site should be developed before greenfield

9. Existing drainage ‘hotspots’ need to be resolved prior to additional development

Communication

1. Keep the Newsletter’s delivery as it is

2. Use of social media allows for wider coverage particularly to try and engage younger people

3. A quarterly Newsletter would not convey news

4. Website links to other news sources would be helpful

5. Newsletter is delivered late in at least one locality

6. Include full contributor names against Newsletter articles

7. The planning section of the Newsletter is boring

Health & Social Care

1. Develop Needham Market Surgery in proportion to growth of the local community and to a multi-discipline ‘health-centre’ establishment inclusive of adequate access/parking

2. Emergency Services need additional funding in proportion to growth of the local community

3. Air pollution is an issue particularly in the High Street with HGV’s ignoring the weight limit day and night

4. Constant hooting from trains causes stress for those residents affected

5. Additional green spaces is essential for health, physical and mental

6. Opticians and mobility services needed in the town

7. Cycle friendly routes, including to the Surgery, would encourage cycling

Environment, Conservation & Heritage

1. Reduce traffic and pollution in the High Street

2. Maintain car parking in the High Street or compensate for any loss

3. Provide electric car charging points

4. Risk of losing ancient woodlands and habitats for varied wildlife

5. Preserve and maintain existing footpaths

6. Add trees to existing residential areas

7. Explain what conservation is taking place?

8. No more houses anywhere and no ring road

9. Needham Market Society holds relevant, useful and interesting information

NEEDHAM OPEN MIC SESSIONSI am typing this the morning after our April session. Despite only having five artists we had a great night, playing to a decent crowd in the bar. Newcomer Jenny sang unaccompanied, and Malcolm, Peter, Martin and I filled the rest of the evening with a mix of songs from across the decades as well as some originals from Martin and myself. Peter, of course, gave us some poems. While it was a good night, I am concerned that we need more players; we cannot offer a variety of entertainment with only three or four acts. So, if you can play, sing or perform, or know somebody that can, why not come along and have a go. Look out for details of our next session in a future newsletter, and be sure to join us in the bar and ask for me - my name’s Bill and I may play the blues.

Church News

CHRISTCHURCHYou may recall that in April I was looking forward to a walking holiday in Yorkshire. Well, unfortunately I didn’t get there due to a back problem. Naturally I was very disappointed, but now I had a free week and was determined to make the most of it!

Fortunately the weather was kind and by the end of the week I had, with the aid of my pressure washer, sand paper and wood stain, renovated some garden furniture. I must say I am very pleased with the results, to say nothing of being happy that I don’t need to spend money on new chairs, and have done something to reduce waste.

What’s the phrase? ‘The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.’ That’s so true isn’t it! We can be happily planning something and we get stopped in our tracks.

It’s what we do after those well-laid schemes have been thrown into disarray that’s important. Do we throw up our hands in despair and resolve to do nothing except moan and feel sorry for ourselves, or do we look for opportunities to make the best of the situation?

I like the word ‘opportunity, and at Christchurch I think the congregation are tired of me inviting them to sign up for the ‘Opportunity to make the tea, arrange flowers, to be part of a team organising an event, being part of a Bible study group etc.’! The dictionary definition of the word ‘opportunity’ is: ‘a time or set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something.’ It’s a very positive word. So, when the set of circumstances that confront you are not quite what you had hoped for, or there is a vacant role in the community, the club (or church!) you belong to, maybe you can consider whether this is an ‘opportunity’ for you to do something positive.

Do you remember the old TV show ‘Opportunity Knocks’? It was a talent show and contestants took the opportunity offered to them to show case their talents.

I hope that you will rise to the challenge when opportunity knocks for you – who knows what you can achieve!

ST ELIZABETH HOSPICE St Elizabeth Hospice Shop

Thank you to everyone who heeds my requests for certain goods each month. It’s lovely to know that “I have at least one listener” (reader!) as Terry Wogan used to say! You would be surprised if I didn’t make a special request for something this month, and I’d hate to disappoint you! This month we’re after your handbags and glad rags … and jigsaws! It’s really strange how we have a good selection of something one month and then they all sell and leave us low again – well, not strange really, as that’s what we want to happen! It proves that we need a constant supply of everything really. We’re always happy to take in your donations during our opening hours of 9.30am – 4.30pm Monday to Saturday.

We have a lovely selection of fascinators in our new goods range at the moment so if you’re off to a wedding, the races or another special event we might have just the thing to make your outfit that little bit more special. There’s lots of colours to choose from and several different styles from minimalist to quite spectacular. We also have a lovely selection of straw sunhats - ideal for the summer, here or abroad.

Enjoy the lovely June weather and don’t forget to come and see us in the shop and bring in any visitors you have too!

MG, Volunteer

St Elizabeth Hospice, Vintage Tea Party On Sunday 5th May a 1940s Vintage Tea Party was held at The Ark in Needham Market. It was organised by Lorena, one of the Needham Market hospice shop volunteers, with her friend Sally and lots of helpers from the shop. There’s always a lot of planning and preparation involved in these events and it was good to see it so well supported. Well done, everyone!

It was a fantastic afternoon with beautiful songs/music from the duo ‘Tea for Two’, Molly & George; thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Needham Market Mayor, Dawn Spurling, popped in with some home-baked goodies too. The ticket sales & raffle gave us a marvellous grand total of £450. All proceeds will go to St Elizabeth Hospice.

ST MARY’S CHURCH, CREETING ST MARYChurch History Evening

Tuesday 16th July at 7pmRoy Tricker, a very well-qualified expert on Suffolk’s churches, has kindly agreed to provide us with an evening’s guide to the history and architectural features of St Mary’s Church. It promises to be a fascinating evening. Refreshments will be served.

The event costs £10 per person (children free), and the proceeds will be shared between the Church Roof Fund and Suffolk Historic Churches Trust.

This event continues the Village’s current “history” theme, and we hope many, both from Creeting St Mary and from surrounding areas, will be able to come along to appreciate our historic building, which is listed Grade 2*.

Tickets are available from David Haynes on 07729 505291 or Glynis Clint on 01449 720740.

HOME WORSHIPChristian Aid Week takes place in May, and so we always get someone from the charity to come and lead our home worship. This year we welcomed Searaj Jeyasingh, a volunteer speaker for Christian Aid who lives in in Ipswich and works for BT as an IT expert. He showed us two videos of Christian Aid work in Sierra Leone, focusing on a particular village that had no public health facilities, greatly affecting maternity services and leading to a high mortality rate for babies. A trained midwife, nurse, and others went to the village to provide invaluable maternity care. We read the story of Dorcas in the Bible who had done so much good work, became ill, and was cured.

Next month Rev. Mary Playford from Christchurch is coming to lead our Home Worship. All are welcome, and after the worship we have tea/coffee and a friendly chat. We always meet on the first Monday of the month at 10am at 137 High Street, Needham Market.

Needham Market Newsletter June 19 23

Church NewsNEWS FROM THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST JOHN THE BAPTIST – NEEDHAM MARKETI begin this article with some really good news: at the end of June we are welcoming a new curate to our ministry team. Her name is Sarah, and she is being ordained a Deacon in Bury Cathedral on Saturday 29th June. She will be joining us for her first service the next day. Sarah is Ipswich born and bred, and worked as a pensions administrator before joining the team at Kesgrave church as their parish Youth and Children’s Worker. However, she felt that wasn’t the end of her story so, after a period of discernment, she went to study for two years at Ripon College, Cuddesdon. Sarah will be working along side Revd. Diane, learning the ropes and getting to know us all, especially the younger members of our congregation as that is her area of expertise. I hope you will join us in welcoming her to Needham Market, particularly you dog walkers - apparently she has two dogs who love to go on countryside walks, so please do say hello when you see her about around the lake and further afield.

We’ve had a couple of produce stalls which have done well despite the weather on both occasions being cold and wet!! Don’t forget to go along to this months stall which is on Saturday 1st June.

Also seek out details elsewhere in this newsletter of the Jubilee Ladies Choir concert on 21st June and the Swift evening on 28th June both in church. Hope to see you there.

Things are quiet over the Summer period but looking further ahead our concerts return on September 21st when we welcome a group of musicians from our neighbouring Parishes of Stonham and Creeting to entertain us with some light music. Our October concert is on Saturday 19th October when we will be entertained by the Stowmarket Concert band. The young people of Simply Brass will be playing at our Christmas Fayre at the Community Centre on 23rd November and on Sunday 1st December we will welcome Castleton Brass for our annual Christmas Concert. Full details of all these events will be in the newsletters over the next few months.

The church is always open during daylight hours and welcomes visitors either to admire our famous hammerbeam roof or to enjoy peace and tranquillity and a chance to put our hopes and prayers before God. Service times are on the door and we welcome you all to anyone of them.

BURY ST EDMUNDS & STOWMARKET CATS PROTECTIONThis month we are hoping to rehome Alfie, a large chunky boy with a loveable character. He is very friendly and chatty and loves to have lots of fuss. We screen all our cats for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Alfie has tested positive. FIV is a slow acting virus and most cats will live long, happy and healthy lives. However, to protect other cats and to preserve Alfie’s health he will need to have an indoor home and ideally one with an enclosed garden. We think Alfie would be best suited to live with an adult-only household or one with older children. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you are interested in giving a home to Alfie or another cat in our care please ring 01449 674584. More information can be found on our website www.cats.org.uk/bury-st-edmunds and our Facebook page.

If your cat has not been neutered and your circumstances mean that you need help towards the cost please ring Margaret on 01284 851055 and leave a message. Your call will be returned as soon as possible. Our Admissions and Lost & Found number is 01449 615500. Our next Jumble Sale is on Saturday 22nd June 2pm – 4pm in Stowmarket Community Centre, Hillside IP14 2BD. Admission is 20p. For more information please ring 01449 258332. We look forward to seeing you.

STOWMARKET WILDLIFE GROUP - SUFFOLK WILDLIFE TRUSTBonny Wood Barking Tye

The dry weather has helped us to get on well with our winter work programme and the volunteers have cleared around the pond and created more scalloped ride edges to let in the sunlight. Richard Cage and his Virgin Media colleagues have done a great job in widening the ride we share with James Buckle’s part of the wood and now it is all done it looks fabulous.

A significant milestone was passed in February when the Mid Week Team coppiced the compartment by the field entrance: it was last done in the late 1980’s and this is the first area to be recut under the Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s stewardship of the wood. The hazel regrowth was really strong and it is great to see the wood really getting back into the cycle of coppice management with all the benefits for wildlife such as dormice, woodland birds and butterflies that this brings. The management plan for Bonny is now up for revision and we look forward to bringing more of the wood into coppice rotation, cleaning out the pond again and continuing to improve the rides so they are more attractive to wildlife.

EVENTS

Unfortunately we have had to cancel the RURAL AND WILDLIFE CRIME talk on

Wednesday 26 June. However we have arranged another speaker

BACK TO BUTTERFLIES with Neil Dickinson

Wednesday 26 June at 7.30pm in Stowupland village hall.

This is Neil’s personal story of how a boyhood interest in butterflies was renewed later in life and explains why. The talk contains surprises and humour, but is also thought provoking because of its wider context.

Admission is £2.50 including refreshments. The complete 2019 programme can be downloaded from www.suffolkwildlifetrust.org/wildlifegroups or by email
