What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a focused pressure technique usually directed at the feet or hands. It is based on the premise that there are zones and reflexes on different parts of the body which correspond to and are relative to all parts: glands and organs, of the entire body.

Pressure points and corresponding effect

Pressure zones correspond with organs and glands throughout ones entire body.

This is the basis of the practice of reflexology.

How does reflexology work?

When reflexes are stimulated, the bodys natural electrical energy works along the nervous system to clear any blockages in the corresponding zones. Reflexology breaks up deposits(which feel like a sandy or gritty area beneath the skin)that may interfere with the bodys electrical energy in the nervous system.

How does it work? continuedManipulating specific reflexes removes stress activating a parasympathetic response in the body to allow for blockages to be released by a physiological change in the body. With stress removed and circulation enhanced, the body is able to return to a state of homeostasis.

Pressure points and corresponding effect

Each pressure point found on the foot corresponds to a specific target in the human body.

Benefits of reflexologyRelaxation with the removal of stress Enhanced circulation Assists the body to normalize the metabolism naturally. Complements all other healing modalities.

Reflexologists do notDiagnose medical conditions unless qualified. Prescribe medications unless qualified. Treat for specific conditions(except for emergencies) Work in opposition to the medical or other fields. Encourage the client to cease taking prescribed medication

What would a session entail?

A complete session on both feet is always performed lasting between 45 and 60 minutes.

Pressure:-work within clients threshold. -when tender reflexes are found, they should be worked with a degree of pressure to effect the desired result. -client should voice their tenderness threshold. -reflexes are worked according to the bodys requirements.

Tenderness can be caused by:-stress -surgery -injury or illness -drugs -foot conditions

Therapy setting

An optimum environment would include a quiet and relaxing surrounding. A recliner chair is most suitable for eye-to-eye contact. Reflexology can be administered anywhere at anytime.

ClientPractice cleanliness Reclining chair (eye-to-eye contact) Fills out health record and accepts responsibilities for session. Voices threshold level. May enjoy session (fall asleep) Encouraged to rest post-session. Drink plenty of water post-session.

ReflexologistPractice cleanliness Provides a professional environment Relaxing music may be played Health record is established and assurance that client accepts responsibilities. Confidentiality Only clients socks are removed. A thorough foot examination is administered. Works within a time-frame Results of the session are documented.
