Painting daily is as import-ant to Clarence Medina as breathing. He gets up, calls his painting buddies to ar-range a place to meet and heads out, even on cold days. Painting up to 300 days a year has gotten Clar-ence, who is largely a self-taught painter, to where he is today; a very collectable painter who exhibits annu-ally at the famous annual Dixon Studio Tour in Dixon, NM and the Contemporary Hispanic Market in Santa Fe, NM.

Regular visits to museums and galleries has made a great impact on his art today. Though self-taught, he has been influenced by many great painters. “Principles and values are all important to get a successful painting” he says. Clarence’s favorite places to paint are the small villages of Northern New Mexico surrounding his home.

Honoring his rich heritage he is deeply involved in his community. Clarence tends his apple orchard and serves as a commissioner on the lo-cal Acequia Association. He has also served as the may-ordomo, who makes sure that the water is flowing and each person gets their fair share of water from the Acequia. He also volunteers at the Dixon Elementary School and the Embudo Val-ley Library, where he helps children.

Clarence describes his work as “impressionism with a touch of expression”.

Contact Clarence at (505) 579 - 4645 or [email protected] and be sure to visit him on the 2016 Dixon Studio Tour.

About the New Mexico

Artists’Studio Tours

New Mexico is known worldwide as a destina-tion for finding fine art created by New Mexican artists, both native art-ists and artists who have moved to New Mexico for the culture, the land-scape, the fresh air, and that unmistakable south-western light. For more than thirty years, artists across New Mexico have banded together locally in a cooperative effort to invite art lovers and vis-itors to meet the artists, experience their studios and discover their art where it is created.

In 2016 the Guide rep-resents 23 studio tours. These tours are com-prised of as few as 5 or 6 artists to as many as 80 or more. The tours occur on designated weekends from late April through the first part of Novem-ber.

Most of the tours are scheduled to take place from 10 am to 5 pm on each day of the open stu-dios. Many of the tours also feature a Friday art reception, where tour visitors can meet the artists and view repre-sentative works in a gal-lery setting. A few of the tours take advantage of 3-day weekend holidays and extend their tours to the Monday holiday.

How to use this GuideThe Artists’ Studio Tours represented in this guide are presented in chronological order as they will take place during the tour season. Each tour has a dedicated page with information about the tour. Some pages have additional destination highlights for visitors new to the locale of the tour.

We have assigned a tour number to each tour. This number serves as a key to find the tour page, as well as the corresponding driving instructions (Page 19) and location on the tour overview map (Page 20). You can also find a complete listing of every tour with tour numbers, names, dates and times for each of the tours (Page 8).

The Santa Fe Studio Tour 2016 will be two art-filled weekends.

A free, self-guided tour open to the public, visitors can choose to tour any number of open studios and discover the original art – paintings, photography, sculpture, jew-elry, ceramics and other unique works — over 50 Santa Fe artists. Many artists give demonstrations of their craft, share techniques and discuss what inspired their work. On Friday June 17 from 5:30pm – 7:30pm the tour begins with an Artists Reception at the Preview Gallery exhibiting artwork by all participating artists. The Preview Gallery is available for preview over the first weekend at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design. It is an opportunity for the public to view all the artists’ work and map out their weekend’s tour. Beginning Saturday June 18 and Sunday June 19 – and the following weekend Saturday June 25 and Sunday June 26 — from 10am to 5pm, all participating artists open their studio doors to collectors and visitors. Santa Fe Studio Tour officials describe the weekend as a “dynamic yet intimate total immersion in art where visi-tors can talk with the artists, experience their working en-vironments and purchase art, all while enjoying the land-scape of New Mexico, touring from one studio to the next!”

Art Loop™ began as a creative venture among artists 21 years ago and con-tinues to be one of the most successful studio tours in New Mexico.

Throughout Lincoln County artists will open their studios, demonstrate their craft and discuss their creative process creating much more than simply a vibrant art market.

Alameda is home to many estab-lished and emerging fine artists and skilled craftspeople. In 2011, a group of these art-ists got together and formed the first annual Alameda Studio Tour. Twenty-five artists opened their studios to the public, inspiring, educating, and offering their work for sale. The event experienced great success and has grown each year. The artists participating in the Tour include both traditional and abstract paint-ers, sculptors, fiber artists, print makers, weavers, jewelers, glass artists, and doll makers. The diversi-ty of artisans and the natural, historic beauty of Ala-meda is what sets this studio tour apart from others.

Alameda is bordered on the east by the railroad tracks that originally helped to bring New Mexico into the modern age. To the north lies Sandia Pueblo. The fa-mous Rio Grande, New Mexico’s life blood, forms the western border of Alameda, and the historic village of Los Ranchos roughly forms Alameda’s southern boundary.

Alameda was the name given by early Spanish settlers to a Tiwa pueblo on the west side of the Rio Grande. Translation means something like “park” or “shad-ed walk” in Spanish. The pueblo was located about where Alameda Elementary School is now (4th Street and Alameda Blvd.).

Tour 2016

Thirteen years ago a group of eight ar-tisans joined together to celebrate art among friends and neighbors with the Sandia Heights Artists Studio Tour.

The annual event continues to emphasize community. Sandia Heights spans both sides of tramway and the foothills. The stunning vistas make fascinating back-grounds for Tour stops at studios or homes, most of which feature two or three artists per location. Each of the Sandia Heights Artists, many of whom change each year, embrace their medium with enthusiasm. The result is an astounding diversity of media: from woodwork to oil, watercolor and acrylics; from jewel-ry of silver and beaded pieces to wearables, gourd art, pottery, mixed media, and hand-made books.

The Pojoaque River Art Tour was created in 1992 by artists William Preston and Marianne Hornbuckle as a vehicle for exposure of artwork independent of the gallery system, and for creation of community among the artists and artisans living in the Pojoaque River Valley.

Locat-ed 20 minutes from Santa Fe (I-25 North), our small community hosts a blend of unique people. Besides artists in all media, many residents have long historic and cultural ties to the area.

Situated on the east side of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Pecos enjoys four beautiful seasons. With clean air and wonderful light, it’s the perfect atmo-sphere for creating inventive art. Our mountains also offer great outdoor recreation.

Take the High Road! The High Road Art Tour, now in its 19th year, is one of the most renowned art tours in the South-west and an opportunity to encounter some of New Mexico’s most outstanding artists.

The High Road to Taos Scenic Byway is a lovely, wind-ing road through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains be-tween Santa Fe and Taos. It offers magnificent vistas of snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and charm-ing traditional Spanish and Pueblo villages.

Many High Road Artists exhibit regularly at museums throughout the nation and world, have been award winners at Spanish Market and other prestigious venues, and have works included in public perma-nent collections from the University of New Mexico to the Smithsonian.

During the last two weekends of September, High Road Artists and Artisans open their studios to the public. Some are open throughout the year, and some only during the tour weekends. Along the scenic 30-mile route you’ll find traditional and contemporary art forms, pottery, weaving, retablos, paintings, sculp-ture, photography, jewelry, and more. Tour brochures with maps are located at tourist venues, information centers, and hotels.

2016

From the art scene to the local cuisine, the 2016 Historic Las Vegas Art Stu-dio Tour is SERIOUS! The free tour, sponsored by the Las Vegas Arts Council, is marking its third consecutive year, and highlights the artistic talent of many northeastern New Mexico artists and arti-sans. The exciting two-day tour features multiple studio stops displaying a wide range of works (paint-ing, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, fiber, photography, traditional Spanish art, street art, mixed media and more). Various locations showcase artists individual-ly and in small groups, as well as gallery settings for those without studios in town.

The studio tour kicks off on the evening of Friday, September 30th with a tour preview show and open-ing reception from 5 pm to 7 pm, at LVAC’s Gallery 140 located at 140 Bridge Street. In 2015, a group of “reunited” musicians who have been playing music in Las Vegas since the 1960s, the Impalas, played a wide variety of music including rock, Latin/Hispanic, jazz and pop. The perfect weather and fabulous mu-sic launched an unplanned street dance including a spontaneous and traditional Gran Marcha.

Discover a new world this Colum-bus Day weekend, October 8th, 9th and 10th, as more than sixty Abiquiu artists open their studios to friends, old and new, during one of the most beautiful times of the year in Northern New Mexico.

The Abiquiu Studio Tour is a self-guided tour that takes visitors and collectors through the village of Abiquiu and the surrounding Chama River Valley – a landscape of imposing mountains, spectacular rock formations and the glorious rivers of the Piedra Lumbre basin. Complimentary maps are available at all the studios and local businesses. For further information visit www.abiquiustudiotour.org or call 505-257-1004.

Inhabited for centuries by Native Americans before and after the Spanish settled here in 1692, Abiquiu village is well-known internationally as the home of the re-nowned painter Georgia O’Keefe, who made it her per-manent home. Visitors come to tour her house in the village, to visit nearby Ghost Ranch where she had a stu-dio, and to enjoy the dramatic landscape that inspired her artistry. Abiquiu continues to attract a steadily growing community of traditional and contemporary artists.

On view will be a vertical timeline of arts and tradition-al crafts of the region, from signature Native American micaceous clay pottery and Hispanic inspired retablos, santos and furniture to contemporary paintings and sculpture, a variety of Native and Southwestern themed works, photographs, jewelry, ceramics, textiles and wearable art. The range and quality of the art, the spec-tacular landscape and the welcoming atmosphere have made the Abiquiu Studio Tour one of the most well-at-tended and successful events of its kind. Experience the unique artistry of the region and explore its local color at this celebratory 23rd Annual event. Abiquiu is locat-ed on US 84, about one hour’s drive from Santa Fe.

In 2014, after an 8 year hiatus, a couple of local artists decided to get the studio going again. Sixteen artists participated in the 2014 tour and we had visitors come from all over New Mex-ico and from the Balloon Fiesta to see what Los Al-amos had to offer. It was a success! The 2015 tour proved to be quite successful as well.

Samples of all of the artist’s work will be on display throughout the weekend in the Pajarito Room at the historic Fuller Lodge.

Los Alamos has a very interesting history. We’re best known as the Atomic City and for our role in the Man-hattan Project during WWII. And although our little city is steeped in science, we have so much more to offer. We have countless outdoor activities, a wonder-ful variety of shops and a vibrant community of art-ists who are ready to show off their talent.

October is a picturesque time to visit northern New Mexico. The Jemez Mountains provide a kaleidoscope of color to all who drive through. While the leaves shift from green to orange to yellow and the skies stay a brilliant shade of turquoise, you can add to the palette by visiting the homes and studios of these tal-ented New Mexico artists.

Gila Cliff Dwellings, NMhttps://www.nps.gov/gicl/index.htmFor thousands of years, groups of nomadic people used the caves of the Gila River as temporary shelter. In the late 1200’s, people of the Mogollon Culture decided it would be a good place to call home. They built rooms, crafted pottery and raised children in the cliff dwell-ings for about twenty years. Then the Mogollon moved on, leaving the walls for us as a glimpse into the past.

Just a few minutes south of the his-toric city of Santa Fe is the village of Gal-isteo centered in the magnificent Galisteo Basin. This all adobe village of some 250 residents boasts of an incredibly diverse artist population. These art-ists, drawn by the natural beauty of our high desert surroundings and breathtaking sunsets, have made Galisteo their home.

As you wind your way through the many studios of Galisteo, you’ll see photography, paintings, pottery and ceramic art, retablos, jewelry, bronze sculpture, weavings, many hand crafted local arts as well as tasty local fare.

For over 25 years, these artist residents have partic-ipated in one of New Mexico’s premier studio tours. This annual event is virtually the only time the public is invited to tour the private studios and meet the art-ists that call this classic New Mexican Village home. Much of the tour can be done on foot. The ancient cottonwoods that line the Galisteo River give portions of the tour a special ambiance rarely found in New Mexico.

We hope you’ll enjoy your visit to our beautiful vil-lage.

A FALL TRADITION The 35th annual DIX-ON STUDIO TOUR takes place on Saturday Nov. 5th and Sunday Nov. 6th from 9am to 5pm each day. The group show “Collected Works” will open on Friday Nov 6th from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM in Dixon, NM.

The Dixon Studio Tour is the oldest continuously running studio tour in the state. The Tour encompasses the ad-jacent villages of Dixon, Embudo, Rinconada, Canoncito, and Apodaca. Nestled in the Embudo Valley where the Rio Embudo flows into the Rio Grande, it is 50 miles north of Santa Fe and 25 miles south of Taos at the junctions of NM 68 and 75. The Tour owes its longevity and popular-ity to many factors like the community, the proximity of the active cultural scenes of Santa Fe, Taos, Taos Pueblo, Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, and Picuris Pueblo. Only a few miles from the Embudo Valley is the newly documented Mesa Prieta petroglyph and rock art site with over 60,000 images.

Long known for its rich Hispanic heritage, productive farm lands, and pastoral beauty, in the last 30 plus years the area has attracted many artists. In 1982 two of these art-ists organized the first Dixon Studio Tour. People love to come to Dixon and the surrounding villages to wander among the orchards and visit the open studios featuring a wide spectrum of contemporary and traditional fine art and crafts. Each artist creates their own world so the Tour visitors seem to step between worlds, using the Tour map to make their own discoveries.

The local community is included with the Mercado at the local school and the Mercadito at the Mission building. Both venues feature many homegrown and homemade lo-cal products as well as traditional New Mexican lunches.
