In times of economic anxiety like these, when people are concerned with practical matters like employ-ment and higher taxes and uncertain about the future, art and aesthetic experience can seem like anindulgence. But in Jersey City on Oct. 1 and 2, visitors and residents can take a whole weekend toenjoy free art, music, and performances in many of the city’s most interesting buildings.

Now in its 21st year, the Jersey City Artist Studio Tour will be “as big as ever,” according to MaryanneKelleher, director of the city’s Division of Cultural Affairs.

Each year, the Reporter newspapers publish this special insert that visitors can use as a guide as theyto walk around this multi-cultural, bustling metropolis and satisfy their curiosity and aesthetic appetites.

Oct. 1 - 2

For the two day festival weekend (Oct.1 and 2, noon to 6 p.m. each day) visitors are bound to find some-thing that suits their taste in music, film, digital arts, photography, painting, sculpture, dance, poetry andmany other art forms while walking around New Jersey’s second major metropolis.

The tour is presented by the City of Jersey City Division of Cultural Affairs and the arts organization ProArts, and is sponsored by entities that include The Hudson Reporter newspaper group.

Cultural Affairs has had to struggle against numerous obstacles, some predictable – like reduced fund-ing – and others unforeseen, like the flooding of their offices by Hurricane Irene, to get this year’s tour upand running.

Nevertheless, the tour has added new artists and venues outside of Downtown, its traditional hub, andis expected to attract thousands of visitors from across the metropolitan area.

Where and when

The Studio Tour begins on Friday night, Sept. 30, with a kickoff celebration at Mana Contemporary, 888Newark Ave., from 6 to 10 p.m. The closing party for the tour is at Parlay Studios, 161 2nd St., on Sunday,Oct. 2, starting at 6 p.m. Both are free and Open to all.

Anywhere there’s a wall, a window, or a space where art can be displayed, you’re likely to find some ofthe abundant creativity of the city on display. The 86 venues displaying creative work run the gamut fromgovernment buildings, established and new art galleries and exhibition spaces, taverns, schools, cafes, shop windows, office and apartment building lobbies, community centers, stores, churches, the LibertyScience Center, and the Newport Mall.

The tour affords visitors countless opportunities to buy artwork that catches their fancy. And by visitingstudios where the artists work, they’ll have the chance to mingle with the creators and talk to them abouttheir work and their creative process.

Thanks to a funding grant, Pro Arts will be running free shuttle buses on five different routes (includedin this supplement) that will come close to all the tour’s locations.

Highlights

New to the tour this year is the 1st Annual Jersey City Powerhouse Short Film Festival, runningSept. 30 to Oct 2, in tents at First and Provost and Bay and Provost streets in the Powerhouse ArtsDistrict, an historic warehouse district downtown about four blocks from the Grove Street PATH station. The program was assembled after canvassing city residents for suggestions. Tickets are $15 generaladmission and can be purchased at www.jcpowerhousefilmfest.com or at the site beginning one hourbefore each program.

Everything else on the studio tour is free, according to Greg Brickey of the city’s Cultural Affairs divi-sion.

Another major new attraction on this year’stour is the Mana Contemporary ArtsCenter, 888 Newark Ave., “one of the mostsignificant venues we’ve ever had,” Brickeysaid, with 100,000 square feet of space. Amajor photo realist exhibit which Opens Sept.18 will run through the tour weekend.

Parlay Studios, at 161 2nd St., will host thegroup exhibition from tour sponsor Pro Arts. With 27 artists listed as exhibitors, this is oneof the largest collections of sculpture, paint-ings, prints, photography and digital art on theTour.

For more information, visit www.parlaystudios.com or www.proartsjerseycity.org.

Other large exhibitions will be on display atlocations such as the Curious MatterGallery, 272 Fifth St.; the Pershing FieldCommunity Center, on the Summit Avenueside of Pershing Field, and the New JerseyCity University galleries, at 2039 KennedyBlvd.

City Hall, 280 Grove St., will also host agroup exhibit of about a dozen artists. In thesame venue, on the ground floor, visit JerseyCity’s version of “The City Love Project.” Andin the Caucus Room is “Summer Away, PartOne,” a group exhibition from the Jersey CityArts High School program.

Finally, in one of the few examples of politi-cal art on the tour, the City Council Chamberswill be the place to view “The Pipe,” spon-sored by the No Gas Pipeline coalition.Multiple screenings will be available of a shortfilm depicting the struggle of a small Irish vil-lage to resist Shell Oil’s attempt to lay a gaspipeline through their community.

Jersey City’s creative richeswill be on display at theArtists Studio Tour

Welcome to Jersey City’s21st Annual Artists StudioTour. With hundreds ofartists and dozens of stu-dios, galleries and exhibi-tions open for tour week-

end, the 2011 Jersey CityArtists Studio continues to

build upon its reputation asNew Jersey’s premier showcase of

emerging and established artists. The new Mana Contemporary Art Center joins

the Studio Tour for the first time, hosting the StudioTour Kick-Off Celebration and featuring open studios, curated exhibitions by Jersey City artists,as well as Mana Contemporary’s second majorexhibition “Our Own Directions: 40 Years ofPhotorealism.”

Also new for the 2011 Studio Tour is thePowerhouse Short Film Festival in the PowerhouseArts District, featuring dozens of short independentfilms showing throughout Studio Tour weekend.

As in years past, the Studio Tour is presentedthrough a partnership between the local arts advo-cacy group Pro Arts and the Jersey City Division ofCultural Affairs. I would like to commend Pro ArtsPresident Kay Kenny and Executive Director SeanHollingsworth, as well as Jersey City CulturalAffairs Director Maryanne Kelleher and Jersey CityArt Curator Greg Brickey for their hard work inorganizing the 2011 Artists Studio Tour, and for their continued efforts on behalf of the City’sgrowing art community.

Finally, the Jersey City Artists Studio Tour would not be possible without the friendship andassistance of the Hudson Reporter. Their annual Tour Guide is the product of much hard workand dedication, and I would like to extend my gratitude to publishers David Unger and LuchaMalato, Advertising Manager Tish Kraszyk, and the entire staff at the Hudson Reporter.

Join us this weekend in celebrating the culture and creativity of Jersey City’s visual and per-forming arts community. Tour guides and maps will be available at City Hall and the GroveStreet Path, and shuttle bus service will be available to and from many Tour venues free ofcost throughout the weekend. Most importantly, please enjoy yourself and continue to supportthe arts in Jersey City.

A letter from the mayor

Sincerely,

Jerramiah T. HealyMayor
