No matter what difficulties they face, there is no stopping their progress toward the arena. They make their way through and over – and sometimes over the top of – the insane runners who choose to put their lives at risk for a cheap thrill. My friends and I watched the chaos from safely behind the fences. We’d already survived food poisoning in Switzerland, dehydration in Rome, being robbed at knifepoint in Nice, and waking up on a wrong train in a country we weren’t supposed to have entered – though the Yugoslavian police were kind as they directed us back to the free world. In San Fermin we decided to not tempt broken bones, or worse. Scripture reminds us again and again that life for the Christian is like a race. It’s sometimes difficult. Sometimes the way seems long. There are days when we want to quit, and days where we feel we have lost our way and perhaps have stepped off the path. But, Jesus Christ—the pioneer and perfecter of our faith-- goes before us. Who—for the sake of the joy that was set before him—endured the cross. Have no doubt. You will reach the arena. Now, run the race with all the intensity you can muster. Hear the great cloud of witnesses who have gone before you cheering you on. Keep running toward the goal no matter the obstacle, and no matter how many times you fall know that Jesus runs with you. NEW HOPE TRUMPETAUGUST 2019

Run the Race Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart. -Hebrews 12:1-4

Each year in July the stories circulate about the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. After reading Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, I found myself in the midst of the chaos at the Festival of San Fermin as I

backpacked through Europe with some friends for 13 weeks one summer during college in 1977. The headlines in July each summer bring back memories of the intensity and excitement of being on the hot and dusty streets in the early morning hours to see the bulls run.

The bulls seemed to know they were heading to the open space in the arena. As they careen down the narrow streets, twisting and winding over the cobblestones, and confronting obstacles before them—sometimes falling hard—they seem to be confident they are heading in the right direction.

But, Jesus Christ—the pioneer and perfecter of our faith--goes before us.

Stewardship Thanks for your continued faithfulness in giving. During summer, with many away on weekends, often becomes a financially difficult time for our congregation. Thoughts on Stewardship: The Key Question by Charles Lane, Ask, Thank, Tell You are called to be a disciple. A disciple's primary relationship is not with the congregation but with Jesus. The congregation is the means through which we grow in faith and proclaim the good news. Giving is an important part of being in a relationship with Jesus. How we steward the finances that God has entrusted to us will have a huge impact on our discipleship. Financial stewardship has the potential to be either a roadblock to discipleship or a catalyst to a growing discipleship. The questions you ask shape the way you think about money and possessions. Let's imagine two people sitting in church on Sunday morning. A commitment card regarding their financial support of the congregation is in each of their hands. Sue is sitting there thinking, "How much of my money does the church need this year? How do I feel about how things are going at church these days? Times are tight, so can I really spare any more?" Next to Sue, Joe is thinking, "God has blessed me in so many ways. How do I feel God is calling me to respond to those blessings?" Sue's focus is on the need of the church to receive. Joe's focus is on the need of the giver to give. Sue is giving as a member, thinking first about the need of the institution. Joe is giving as a disciple, thinking first about God's presence in his life and God's call to him to respond to that presence. What questions are you asking as you think about what you will give? Our goal is to help you grow in your relationship with Jesus through the use of the time, talent and money God has entrusted to you. The question we invite you to consider is, "How is God calling you to respond to God's presence in your life?"

DEVOTION: BROKEN-NESS “We live by faith, not by sight.” 2 Cor. 5: 7 (NIV)

Few times my husband and I attended a farm show not far from home. It was usually a nice day offering lots of things to see and eat. There were tractor pulls and machinery demonstrations to watch. There were many tables offering things to buy. Most, but not all, seemed table after table of items for farm use. I was amazed at what was for sale. Its like a huge vintage hardware store. Many items were old, broken and quite rusty. I don’t know if much actually sold or if vendors packed it all up at the end of the show to take it home. I wondered if it was all thrown or stored behind a shed, hoping next year will be better. I don’t remember buying anything but a large tarp. Always looking, even though my husband had many of the same broken things at home. I always thought he might find something, such as an odd nail or tool. Often he could fashion a needed item out of used pieces. God is the author of such work. He can take our lives and make something workable. Now and then one might think our lives, our accomplishments, what we are able to do, is broken—rusting—nothing but garage sale junk. It is only if we let it—God’s fashion designs are remarkable! Our God is just waiting for us to turn ourselves over to His remodeling. Dear Jesus, Help us to see your love never gives up on us. Thank you, Jesus. Amen. -Sue Piotrowski
