From the principal I think I say it every week but what a HUGE week we had last week! The Japanese exchange students arrived on Wednesday. There was a lot of head nodding, smiling and awkward hand movements as we attempted to communicate with the students when they first arrived (they only had a small amount of English and weren’t quite used to our Australian accent when they arrived.) Just in time for the students arrival the students in the year ½ class had planned a surprise 40 th birthday party for their teacher Josie. The food they had all brought in was amazing- showing just how talented the Campbells Creek families are. I had a very difficult time trying to explain to the Japanese students that this we don’t celebrate EVERY teacher’s birthday in this way! On Thursday we had our Indonesian Children’s Day celebrations. The classes had all worked very hard to decorate their rooms in the lead up to the day. They certainly looked amazing by Thursday! The rooms were judged by Zoe on the day with points being awarded for creativity, student input and links to the curriculum learning as well as Indonesian studies. It was a hotly contested prize and the prep/1 class were very happy to be announced as the winners. The day saw students participating in multi aged groups enjoying Indonesian games (inside and outside) as well as participating in fun hat making and Gamalan music sessions. The focus of the day was on learning about our Asian neighbours as well as having good old fashioned fun! At lunch time a wonderful team of mums whipped up lunch for over 130 people. We enjoyed fried rice and mee goreng noodles out of noodle boxes donated by Rima Mustafa. The students thoroughly enjoyed their Indonesian lunch so a huge thanks to the parents involved! Prep Enrolments

We are now taking prep enrolments for next year.

To help families of prospective enrolments learn more about the great things happening at Campbells Creek we will be running school tours every Friday morning between 10 and 11am. Please help spread the word about these tours and encourage people from the wider community to attend. (We figure it is time we started telling people outside our school about the wonderful things we do at our schools).

Soup Day Tuesdays On Tuesdays we have chicken noodle with vegetable soup available to purchase.. Soup will be available for $1 in the Banyan Building at lunch time each Tuesday. Students will need to bring their own PLASTIC cup/mug. Money raised will be going towards subsidizing the lunch for our upcoming Indonesian Children’s Day activities.

Communication At the moment we have two main methods of communicating information to parents efficiently and effectively- our Facebook page and our mobile phone app Konnective. Our newsletter is a great way to find out what is happening after the event but Facebook is currently proving to be a better way of keeping people updates as the events are happening. Last week we were able to post photos of our Indonesian Day as the day was unfolding. Here is a comment from one of our parents about the sharing of photos on Facebook: “I have just been told about each of the activities. I love being able to share Charlie’s day through the photos.” We currently have 94 members on our Facebook page and 51 members on our mobile app. I strongly encourage all parents to take up one of these methods of communication in order to stay informed. I am happy to help any parents to join the page or the app- just bring your mobile in to school any morning or afternoon.

Facebook Group (repeat)

Our Facebook group has been created as another avenue for sharing important information with the wider school community in a more timely manner.

There are 3 ways you can join this new group:

• Follow the link on our campbellscreeps.vic.edu.au website under ‘Parent Links’ or

• Search on Facebook for “Campbells Creek and Guildford Primary Schools” or

• Visit http://goo.gl/IGyIrw

Fair meeting Friday

In the lead up to our school fair (which is only 5 weeks away!) we will have a weekly fair meeting on Friday mornings.

At last week’s meeting we discussed donations from businesses and also talked about the raffle we will be running on the day.

We are very thankful to Lyal Eales store who donated a $300 swag for first prize in the raffle as well as a sleeping bag for second prize! Tickets for the raffle will be $1 each. Raffle books will be sent out to all families in two weeks.

(We are still looking for donations for our raffle and spinning wheel- please let us know of any businesses you know who would be interested in donating prizes/vouchers etc).

We decided that we will have a “mini-market” with stalls selling home-made crafts, products / household goods etc. These stalls will be supplied with a trestle table and can be booked for $30 per stall at the school office. If you know anyone who you think would be interested in having a stall at our mini-market please let them know about the opportunity.

School fair- classroom activities

Our classes are starting to get sorted for their fair activities.

The 5/6 class will be opening a ‘carboard arcade’ where people can come and play arcade games on homemade machines (read more about this later in the newsletter).

The 4/5 class will be taking control of the showbag stand- they will be selling a few varieties of showbags for around $6.

The 1/2 class will be having a ‘Choc Grid’ stand where you can win chocolate treats by throwing money on to a grid.

Prep/1 students will be doing lucky jars.

All classrooms will need assistance with the activities on the day. Please contact classrooms teachers if you are able to help out.

items. Examples of lucky jars that could be used in the competition could include, pens, crayons, balls of wool, lollies etc. Thankyou to Renee Taylor for organising a collection of spare jars for our fair.

Year 6 Cardboard Arcade In preparation for their stall at the fair, the year 6 class have been set a challenge by Mr Mac- to build an arcade of games using cardboard boxes. The motivation behind Mr Mac setting his students’ this cardboard challenge, came from meeting and networking with other inspiring teachers at the Digital Learning Teachers Victoria,(DLTV) State Conference in Melbourne, where he spoke on behalf of the school. At this conference Mr Mac was able to hear first-hand from other educators about the value it had on their students' and then apply that to his own class. Mr Mac told me that he was blown away with the influence the video of 9 year old American boy Caine, had on his students and how eager and engaged they were to design, create and develop their own arcade. This goes to show that digital learning goes well beyond computer screens and games and also enriches students’ lives and allows them to be creative and inspiring amongst their peers. I visited their classroom last week while the students were in the planning and designing phase of their work and the buzz of excitement in the room was wonderful to see! Ethan and Josh showed me the plans for their “ticket grab” machine, they had even made a small model of it:

Today I walked in to the spare room and fond the class neck high in cardboard boxes, cutting, sticking, discussing, refining, collaborating. It really it so inspiring to see the students’ imaginations running wild. I can’t wait to try out their games!

Fair- Seeking Community Groups

We would like to use the fair as an opportunity to put the whole of Campbells Creek and Guildford communities on the show. We would like to have a ‘come and try’ community groups area and are looking for community groups who would like to set up activities/information booths on the day. Do you know a group in the Campbells Creek or Guildford community who would like to participate? Please let us know!

Newsletter Emailing Would you prefer to have a colour copy of the newsletter emailed to you? Please email [email protected], or let the office ladies know and we will send it out to you via the cyber-postman from now on. Past editions are always available on our school website http://campbellscreekps.vic.edu.au as well.

Friday Assembly This Friday’s assembly will be run by Gemma and Abby.

Premier’s Reading Challenge How’s your child’s progress in the reading challenge going? We only have 5 weeks left!

Footsteps Dance Classes The Footsteps dance classes start next Tuesday. The cost is $15 per student and a note has been sent out today. Students will learn some great new dances in these lessons- we are looking forward to seeing their moves by the end of the 5 week course.

Donations needed for the school fair Our school fair is on Sunday 14th September and we are asking all families, friends and the community for some assistance with donations for the various stalls.

School Fair- Plant Stall

If anyone has any plants/herbs/strawberries/vegetables they would like to pot up for the stall it would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has any pots they would like to donate or is in need of any pots please call Jody on 0407077241.

School Fair- Books Wanted

Do you have any second hand books that are in good condition and that you would be happy to donate to the school to be sold in our second hand book stall? Please drop any books off to the box in the library.

School Fair- Jars Wanted

The prep/1 class will be running a lucky jar stall at the fair and require donations of jars full of interesting and exciting

Miss Muddy- all women invited! After completing the Tough Mudder Challenge earlier in the year it was suggested to me that we enter a school team in the upcoming ‘Miss Muddy’ Challenge in Creswick later this year. I think this is a great way for us to role model leading a healthy lifestyle and tackling challenges head on (as well as being a great team bonding opportunity).

I would like to announce that the Campbells Creek /Guildford Primary School ‘Miss Muddy’ team has been created! We will be known as the "Creek Crushers." All 18+ females are invited to participate in this endurance test. It involves running, climbing, walking, crawling and LOTS of mud and fun! It costs $75 per person (10% goes to women’s charities) and will happen at Creswick on November 30th at 1:15pm.

You can join by going to www.missmuddy.com.au and selecting 'Join Team' during the registration process. Simply enter our team name “Creek Crushers,” complete payment and you will be welcomed aboard.

We have had a few people already signing up after it was advertised on our Facebook page…who is keen?

Battery and Lightbulb Recycling

The Mount Alexander Sustainability Group have invited us to take part in a battery (and light globe) recycling initiative. The program is aimed at keeping batteries out of landfill. It is simple to be involved- just bring your old household batteries and/or lightbulbs to the school and place them in the recycling box that will be stored near the front office.

Here and Happy Award

Congratulations to the 4/5 class for their effort. We had high absence rates last week- hopefully the weather will start to warm up so we can increase the attendance rates to at least 95% in every class.

Terima Kasih!! Everyone for making Children’s Day a great success! It was wonderful to see all of our students playing in multi-age groups. Trying out new games and just having fun together! The Colouring Competition was very difficult to judge as there were so many colourful and thoughtful entries. The winners were: Junior Grades: 1st Ashlee Dawes, 2nd Jackson Clapton, 3rd Mathilde Cross. Middle Grades: 1st Charlie Baker, 2nd Sophie Lewis, 3rd Montanna Stevens. Senior Grades 1st Shereen Mustafa, 2nd Cooper Golles, 3rd Zoe Marsh

Congratulations also to the

Prep/1 class who won the best decorated room for Children’s Day. Whilst all rooms looked fabulous Prep/1 were judged to have linked their decorating with other curriculum areas such as Indonesian language, Rainbow theme for Children’s Day and the integrated unit of Mini Beasts. Prep/1 thoroughly enjoyed their extra 30 minutes of play on Friday morning. It was a great opportunity for them to explore the playground by themselves.

A very big Terima Kasih also to Sharyn Robinson who organised the food for the day. Sharyn organised a team of helpers- Chelsea Garsed, Ros Morris, Kym Cross and Rachel Honeychurch who prepared delicious Nasi Goreng and Mie Goreng for the whole school and lots of visitors as well. Well done ladies!! To start the day all classes were invited to bring along a poem about Rainbows. Each class or members of the class recited their poem. The following was written and recited by one of our senior students Shereen Mustafa.

YOU SAY TRASH, WE SAY

BARRELS

YOU SAY RAINBOWS, WE SAY

CAMPBELLS CREEK

YOU SAY PURPLE, WE SAY

CHIILDREN’S DAY

I WRITE THE LINES TO SHOW

YOU,

YOU MIGHT NOT UNDERSTAND,

BUT I HAVE A HUGE CLUE,

AND ALL MY FRIENDS DO TOO! Shereen Mustafa

Finally, a big thank you to all of the staff who contributed to making Children’s Day a fun day at Campbells Creek. Bu Cordy

Gr1/2 Boomerang Camp

Grüezi mitenand, Towards the end of August our school garden will be one of the many gardens judged in the Buda School Great Vegie Challenge. We have been regularly planting, weeding and digging in the garden however we need a bit of extra help to get things looking beautiful in the garden. So, we will be having a working bee on Saturday 16th August from 1-3pm. Some of the jobs include installing objects in the Musical garden, putting bird netting over the garden beds and more planting, weeding, mulching, whipper snippering etc. Afternoon tea will be provided. All welcome (very welcome!!!)

Those little nasties!! We have had many cases of headlice and it is still a recurring nuisance at school. The only way to beat this is to keep checking every few days or so and remove all eggs. Lice eggs hatch after 1-2 weeks of being laid so heads need to be regularly checked.

Forms A few forms have been sent home

recently. If you have any of the following at home, please return as soon as possible:

• Parent opinion survey

• RE form

• Expression of interest for Gr

1/2 Boomerang camp

• Update of family details

• Indonesian Children’s Day

• Gr 3/4 writers day in

Bendigo

Cooking last week Last week a very exuberant and hard working group made a vegie frittata and green salad using many of the products from our garden. The students gathered eggs, picked salad leaves, oregano, thyme and parsley from the garden. Afterwards they enjoyed the feast.

Wood raffle Tickets have been sent home to all families. If you could help sell a few, it would be very much appreciated. The tickets are 50c each or 3 for $1. The raffle will be drawn at assembly on Friday 15th

August. Could families please return money and sold tickets by the morning of the 15th August so that we can organize the drawing of the raffle.

What are we working on? As well as preparing for the garden judging we are also working on the following: Music – marimbas and singing. Art – Creating pieces for our Musical Garden

Speaking and Listening – eye contact, listening without making noises or wriggling. ICT – creating Powerpoints of the cooking recipes. PE – kicking and catching skills. Indonesian – colours, greetings and preparing for Children’s Day. Integrated Studies – the juniors are investigating minibeasts and the seniors are looking at plant life cycles. Bounceback – Looking on the ‘bright side’ as well as relevant social/emotional issues.

Indonesian Cultural Day This Thursday we will be spending the day in at Campbells Creek PS and joining in with a range of Indonesian activities organized by Bu Cordy. The day costs $6 per student which includes a performance and a lunch of either Nasi Goreng or Mie Goreng. The students will need to be dropped off at Campbells Creek PS by 9am for the day and picked up at 3.30 from Campbells Creek PS. Please return the note by Wednesday 6th August. (Don’t forget to wear your special colours for the day).

Wanted We are in need of a variety of items to incorporate into our ‘musical garden’. We are looking for steel pipes cut to various lengths, poly pipe, old pots and pan lids, strainers, graters, old crockery, ladles, wooden spoons. If you have any of these items, or other items that may be suitable for ‘outside sound making’ please see Ange. We really need them ASAP!

Friday lunches During the cooler months, we are offering to heat student lunches on a Friday. This has been a very popular event on a Friday. A sample of last week’s lunches included lasagne, toasted sandwiches, pies, soups and noodles. Just bring your lunch along to school, leave it on the kitchen table with your name on it and we will heat it up at lunchtime. Hot lunches will be available each Friday this term.

LaTrobe student On Monday we welcome back Jillian from LaTrobe university. Jillian spent time with us earlier in the year and returns for Monday 11th, 18th, 25th of August and then a full week at the start of September.

Value of the week is Responsibility. Last week the value of the week was demonstrated by Chloe-Grace. Star of the Week: Jackson for interesting creative writing especially with poetry. Artist of the week: none this week.

Prep Enrolments

We are now taking prep enrolments for next year.

To help families of prospective enrolments learn more about the great things happening at Guildford Primary School we will be running school tours every Tuesday between 11:30am and 12:30pm.

Please help spread the word about these tours and encourage people from the wider community to attend. (We figure it is time we started telling people outside our school about the wonderful things we do at our schools).

Communication Over the last couple of weeks there have been several times we have realised the importance of having a way to communicate messages to all parents quickly and easily. An example was when our return train from Melbourne was cancelled and we needed to let everyone know we would be late home. At the moment we have two main methods of communicating information to parents efficiently and effectively- our Facebook page and our mobile phone app Konnective. We currently have 90 members on our Facebook page and 50 members on our mobile app. I strongly encourage all parents to take up one of these methods of communication in order to stay informed. I am happy to help any parents to join the page or the app- just bring your mobile in to school any morning or afternoon.

Respect. Responsibility. Integrity. Optimism. Effort.
