Dates to Remember Dear parents, Attendance – The Home School Liaison Officer visits our school each week to monitor student attendance. Last week, she was reviewing the number of unjustified/unexplained absences of students and she has asked me to remind parents that explanations need to be provided for ALL student absences. Our school provides a number of options for parents to notify us about student absences. These include: Handwritten notes Email sent to the school account – [email protected] Phone call to the school Form letters (available on school website) Skoolbag App (instructions for downloading the App included in newsletter) Medical certificates should be provided for all absences over three days or if a student has attended the doctor whilst absent. If you need any assistance with your child’s attendance, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher or Miss Rox. Early Arrivals This term we seem to have a big increase in the number of students who arrive early to school (before 8.30am). we do realise that for some children their parents need to leave for work and that as the OOSH service is currently at full capacity, students may need to either walk around or come in to school. For this reason we do open our gates early – to give the students somewhere to go. Please understand, however, that the students are NOT directly supervised until 8.30am. Students are expected to sit on the library steps or on the silver seats but are definitely not allowed to play games before the 8.30am bell rings and a teacher gives them permission to do so. Dates to Remember

Dear parents,

Attendance – The Home School Liaison Officer visits our school each week to monitor student attendance. Last

week, she was reviewing the number of unjustified/unexplained absences of students and she has asked me to

remind parents that explanations need to be provided for ALL student absences.

Our school provides a number of options for parents to notify us about student absences. These include:

Handwritten notes

Email sent to the school account – [email protected]

Phone call to the school

Form letters (available on school website)

Skoolbag App (instructions for downloading the App included in newsletter)

Medical certificates should be provided for all absences over three days or if a student has attended the doctor

whilst absent.

If you need any assistance with your child’s attendance, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher

or Miss Rox.

Early Arrivals – This term we seem to have a big increase in the number of students who arrive early to school

(before 8.30am). we do realise that for some children their parents need to leave for work and that as the OOSH

service is currently at full capacity, students may need to either walk around or come in to school. For this reason we

do open our gates early – to give the students somewhere to go. Please understand, however, that the students are

NOT directly supervised until 8.30am. Students are expected to sit on the library steps or on the silver seats but are

definitely not allowed to play games before the 8.30am bell rings and a teacher gives them permission to do so.

$ and c – I have often written in this newsletter that under no circumstances should students miss out on any

activity as a result of their home experiencing financial difficulties. Please understand that if your family is

experiencing financial difficulties and an excursion or some other kind of payment is due, please let us know if you

want your child to attend – we can arrange time payment and in extreme circumstances provide direct assistance –

but please do not put off enrolling your child in the activity! The school can assist – all parents have to do is make a

phone call.

One-time; no warnings. At GPS we practise a Positive Behaviour for Learning approach to discipline. Our goal is to

ensure that all members of our school community – students, staff, parents and visitors – are, at all times, safe,

respectful, learners. At school, students are asked to do something once. If they do not comply then they are

‘escalated’ through the steps in our PBL policy. I am very, very pleased to report that the great majority of students

at school do what they are asked on the very first occasion when each day, teachers ask hundreds of things of all

students. Well done to all of our students!

News from Western Australia – The ‘educator – Australia’ is an online news service keeping educators up-to-date with

events around Australia. The following article comes from Western Australia and gives an idea of discussions happening in that

state.

The Western Australian government is considering automatic suspensions for violent students in a push to improve school safety.

Under the changes being discussed, schools would be required to strengthen the processes for a student's return to school so

support is in place to help improve the student's attitudes and behaviours and achieve a long-term reduction in violence and

aggression.

“I am shocked and appalled by some of the violence we have seen in our schools this year and something has to change – we

need to get tougher,” WA Education Minister, Sue Ellery, said. "The majority of students do the right thing and come to school

ready to learn and contribute, but we do not want to continue hearing stories about students or staff being attacked in places

that are designed for learning.”

Ellery said called on school communities to help tackle the issue by educating children about respectful behaviour.

“I'm under no illusion that this is a big issue and it will be impossible to completely eradicate violent incidents, but we must do

better,” she said. “To do that, we need the support of the whole community. These issues do not start and finish with the school

bell and schools alone cannot address this. We all have a responsibility to teach our young people that violence is never the

answer.”

Earlier this year, Ellery announced a review of the current policies and procedures to prevent and respond to violence in schools,

after videos were released showing shocking violent fights between students.

In addition to automatic suspensions, the government is also considering a ‘good standing’ policy, which will see violent students

barred from participating in school social activities until they begin demonstrating positive behaviour.

Consultation with the public school sector will continue over coming months as the Violence in Schools Action Plan is developed,

and will be released later this year to be implemented from 2019. WA Secondary School Executives Association (WASSEA)

president, Armando Giglia, said the state’s public secondary schools are likely to welcome the Minister’s announcement.

“[The Minister’s announcement] is a way of widening the debate that violence in our communities is both unacceptable and a

shared responsibility,” Giglia told The Educator. “This is not a public school issue – violent and disruptive behaviour can happen in

any community, and so it can happen in any school too.

“We should ensure that students, parents and community members have the confidence that the disruptive behaviour of a small

minority of students and dare I say, sometimes of their parents, does not take the majority of our time and attention; that should

be reserved for teaching and learning.”

Swim Scheme – On Wednesday of this week I was able to visit the swimming scheme and see the 120

students who now go swimming each week in their lessons. I was very impressed with the younger

students in Kinder and Yr 1. I was also very impressed by the students who are older and taking the

opportunity to improve their swimming skills. Well done to all concerned and especially to our coordinator,

Miss Simmonds, for all of her hard work!

Have a great week,

Yours faithfully,

Doug Meaney

Principal

This week at Playgroup!

Term 3, Week 2 (Monday 2-3pm & Wednesday 9-10am)

On Monday we were fortunate enough to have Michelle visit us from The NSW Department of Health. She spent some

time with the children and their parents performing dental checks and offering some advice about how to encourage

children to brush their teeth.

During our Wednesday session, we read a story about visiting the dentist for the first time and continued to develop

our fine-motor skills by painting some teeth. The children shared some of their ideas about how they can keep their

teeth healthy.

Our playgroup library is officially up and running and many families borrowed some books to share and enjoy together

at home this week. It is encouraged that all parents and caregivers to read with children their children every single

day.

Next week, on both Monday and Wednesday the theme for playgroup is ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’. I encourage all children

to bring a teddy along to the sessions. We will be reading some teddy stories, singing some songs and enjoying some

teddy crafts and dramatic play.

We will also be having a visit from the lovely P&C ladies, to provide some information about the role of the P&C at

Glendenning Public School. A representative will come along to both the Monday and Wednesday session so those

attending playgroup can ask any questions they may have.

During Week 4 we will be celebrating Friendship Day. We encourage all families to bring along a friend to our session

so they can see what Playgroup is all about. All families are welcome.

Also, please note a change of date for the StEPS Vision Screener. This visit will now take place on Monday, August 27

between 2-3pm. Information and Permission notes will be going home during our next sessions. This screener is

suitable for any child who is 4 years of age or above.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at our ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’ next week!
