Issue 12 26 July 2019
Welcome back after the holiday break. We certainly have a very busy Term 3 ahead of us and I look forward to the chal-lenges ahead. DISTRICT OFFICE VISIT On Tuesday of this week we were delighted to have the Regional Director, Leanne Wright and our Assistant Regional Director, Sevil Aldas visit Fairview. Leanne is wanting to visit all schools in the Darling Downs and South West throughout the year. That is certainly a big task. Leanne was very impressed with Fairview and wanted to thank our Fairview Community for the outstanding work that is being undertaken at Fairview. Leanne was amazed at the learning opportunities that were being given to students. Leanne complimented and thanked all staff for the work they do and enjoyed walking around our beautiful surroundings. Above is a photo of our 5 School Captains welcoming Leanne and Sevil to Fairview.
MUSICAL Talking about busy!!! The Year 4-6 School Musical “Cinderella & Rockerfella” is our great drawcard this Term. The Musical will be held on THURSDAY 19 SEPTEMBER at HIGHFIELDS CULTURAL CENTRE. Every newsletter this term we will have a section about our Musical happenings, so you can be well informed about our journey. Our main characters have already been chosen and have already commenced practising Students who are in our Chorus have also commenced practising their Dances with the ‘Footsteps’ Group every Thurs-day afternoon from 1.30 to 3.00p.m. in the Hall, for the first 5 weeks of this term. Parents do not have to pay for these sessions as they are part of our Musical Opportunities.

100 DAYS On Monday of this week all our Prep students participated in the celebration of 100 days of learning in Prep. Congratula-tions to the Prep students on achieving this goal and thank you to the Prep teachers and Teacher Aides who organized and prepared the activities for the students to enjoy. We have attached photos of the Prep students participating in the 100 Days activities for you to enjoy. SICKNESS Winter is here and so is the Flu season! Parents, if your child has flu symptoms and is unwell, please keep your child at home, so the flu symptoms don’t spread throughout the school. Flu symptoms are highly contagious! Please help us keep our students healthy.
PREP ENROLMENTS 2020 Children born 1 JULY 2014—30 JUNE 2015 Parents at Fairview who have younger siblings that are eligi-ble to attend Prep in 2020 please contact the office as soon as possible to enrol your child so we can gauge our future numbers.

Please check your emails over the weekend and if you don’t receive your child/s Report Cards by Monday 29 July, please contact the Office. We have asked Parents/Carers throughout Term 2 to inform the Office if you have changed your contact de-tails. For those parents/carers who don’t have access to emails, please let the Office know and paper copies will be given to you. Towards the end of Term 3, we will be conducting Parent/Teacher Interviews again similar to Term 1. As Term 3 progresses we will be informing parents/carers when these are and how to book them. ATTENDANCE Good attendance and success at school go hand in hand.
Absences from school are notified regularly to Education Queensland. Parents are asked to please comply with the following when students are absent:
Please notify the school via
• Text Message OR School App OR
• Phone the School If your child is absent for 3 continuous days without contact from a parent/guardian, the school will make every effort to contact you.
REPORTING STUDENT ABSENCES: TEXT ABSENCES to SMS—0429 392 102 This function is available for reporting student absences. Our school is using the ID Attend computer program for Absences. Rolls are marked at 9:00am. We send a text message by 10.00am to parent/carers of students who have not arrived at school and not notified the school of a reason for their ab-sence. If you receive a text message from FHSS simply reply by text with your child’s name and the reason for their ab-sence. So save this number to your phones as FHSS Absences!!
OR FHSS SCHOOL APP (Skoolbag APP) ABSENTEE NOTE
Download the FHSS FREE APP for Smart Phones and IPADS. In the PARENT Eforms section there is an ABSEN-TEE NOTE which you can complete. This is then emailed directly to Admin.
OR PHONE FHSS
Phone the School 46 592 888 and follow the prompts to ‘Report a Student Absence’
You may still choose to send a note directly to your child’s class teacher instead of using these other options.
ARRIVING LATE OR LEAVING EARLY
Students arriving after 9.00am must be signed in at the office by a Parent/Carer and collect a ‘Late Slip’ to take to the class teacher. Children arriving after 9.00am without signing in at the office will be marked as an unauthorised absence for that day and parents will receive a text message that they are ab-sent.
Students leaving any time before 3.00pm for any reason MUST be signed out at the office.

The annual School Opinion Survey is being conducted
from 29 July to 23 August 2019. All families, school staff and a random sample of students will be invited to partici-

improve. Access details for the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be sent home with students next week. The survey can be com-
pleted via computers, tablets or smart phones with internet connection.
Parents/caregivers who do not have access to the internet
at home are welcome to complete their survey online at the school library. The computers in the library will be available
from 8.30-8.50am. Survey queries or requests for transla-
tions can be directed to Gary Pascoe on telephone 07 46592888 or email
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability
Dear Parents/Carers, Collecting data on school students with disability helps teachers, principals and education authorities support the participa-tion of students with disability in schooling on the same basis as students without disability. All Australian Governments have agreed to work together on the annual collection of data on school students with disability. All Australian schools participate in this annual data collection. The data provided to the Australian Government is aggregated data only. Please be reassured that the Department will not provide on to another organisation any data that can identify an individual student. The only data being collected at the school level to be reported nationally is the:
• number of students in the school who are provided with an adjustment to address a disability;
• level of adjustments we provide for those students; and
• broad category of disability. Consultation with parents is important not only for the data collection but also to ensure you are aware of the adjustments being provided to support your child. We will therefore continue to consult with you. While only data that cannot identify your child will be submitted outside of the Department, if you do not wish for your child’s details to be included, please let me know (email, phone, letter, visit me). Information and fact sheets are available to help you make a decision from the: • Department’s website: http://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/disability-data-collection.html • Australian Government Department of Education website: http://education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability Alternatively, if you have any queries about the collection or use of this data I encourage you to contact me directly. PE HOMEWORK Prep—Year 3 Classes
Thanks to everyone for helping our students to complete their Over-arm throwing (PE Homework) in the second half of term 2. Once again I have heard some great stories from students about how much fun they had playing with Mum and Dad and ‘teaching’ them how to throw! We are now concentrating on their kicking technique. This is kick-ing from the hands NOT on the ground. It would be great if you could again encourage your child to practise at home. Cues we use in class are holding the ball ‘like a rocket’, “Step-Drop-Kick” and ballerina toes. We are trying to ensure the ball is dropped onto the laces of the shoe and we step onto the non-kicking foot. A football or soccer ball are ideal to practise with. Alternatively you could use a balloon or just squash up a piece of newspaper or Alfoil into a ball—the newspaper/balloon is great as you can practise indoors as well. Looking forward to seeing our Fairview superstars develop into cra-zy kickers! Al Aston—PE Teacher
WEDNESDAY MORNING CHESS
Enthusiasm is high in Chess Lessons!
I am oen asked if chess is valuable. Below is a quote from re-
search undertaken.
“One of the key educaonal benefits is raised IQ scores. There
have been a number of studies which have proven the benefits of
chess in terms of results. In Venezuela, a study of over 4,000 sec-
ond grade students found a significant increase in most student’s
IQ scores a&er only 4.5 months of systemacally studying chess.
This occurred across all socio-economic groups and for both
males and females. A&er this study, the Venezuelan government
introduced chess lessons to all schools. Another study in Pennsyl-
vania in 1987-88 found that a group of year six students, that
studied chess two to three mes per week and played most days,
had a significant increase in both memory and verbal reasoning
skills, especially amongst the more compeve players.”
We are very lucky to have a young enthusiasc coach, Ben Peach
who is highly regarded in chess tournament circles.
This term we are preparing students for a "Teams Chess" tourna-
ment. This a highly beneficial full day of mental gymnascs in the
game of chess.
Currently we have 15 students enrolled with provisions for addi-
onal students to a(end. If interested contact Gary for more in-
formaon.

It was amazing to see so many students receiving certificates on Parade this week for achieving different levels in Literacy Pro! It is so great to see so many students loving reading books!
So far this year we have read just over 35 million words!
That is an amazing effort from our students. Stay tuned for information on our next reading challenge! I can't wait to see what records we can break this term!

The fire truck visited us on Tuesday 23 July to show us how the fire truck is used. We
were very excited to see the truck and talk to the fire fighters. We all took turns to use
the fire truck hose and were wowed by the force of the spray.
The fire fighters told us we need to:
• Know our address including our suburb
• Call 000 in an emergency
