Atawhai’s Paul Willis likes it so much he flies it above his house. City councillor Matt Lawrey thinks it’s so great he is plan-ning a community event in sup-port of it. But the “red peak” flag hasn’t won support from the city’s mayor who says she’d like to see

a silver fern on our national flag.“If I think about what we do with the flag, how we use it, if I’m going to stand at a rugby game and I’m going to wave a flag, I know what I’d feel more passionate about waving.”There are now five options for a new flag that will go to a na-tional referendum next month. The winner will then go head-to-head with the current flag in an-other referendum early next year.Of the five options, three have a silver fern, one has a koru while the fifth option, that was only

added after a petition to the gov-ernment, is known as red peak.Rachel says if she was judging a graphic design competition red peak would win, but she says she “doesn’t get it”. “Do I think Red Peak is the an-swer? No, I don’t actually. I just

go, what is it about? I can see the symbolism around it but is it memorable in identifying New Zealand? Will it be memora-ble? Will it have that longevity as something that I identify with New Zealand and I don’t think it will.”Rachel’s view isn’t shared by all of her council

colleagues though. Councillor Matt Lawrey is a fan of red peak and is even organising a community event this Saturday to help win it support.“One of the most exciting things about Red Peak is the way it’s triggering peo-ple’s imaginations and prompt-ing them to put their own spin on the design, using everything from bush-shirts and the faces of rock stars to native flora and fauna,” Matt said.At the event, which will be at the church steps on Saturday at 10am, a locally crafted and “in-genious” version of the red peak flag will be unveiled. The first referendum of the flag debate is at the end of November.Another Red Peak fan is Atawhai man Paul Wills, who flies it

above his home. The former dip-lomat says he served under the current flag around the world for decades. But he feels it’s time to move on and pick a new flag.“I think the current flag has served us well but I do support a new one. I didn’t think the first four flags would capture the spir-it of the nation and when I saw the Red Peak flag I though it suits where were are at in the 21st cen-tury and is a good, modern alter-native.”The first postal referendum of the flag debate is at the end of November.

Businesses shut down as fire destroys truckAndrew Board

A truck carrying 63 gas cylin-ders was destroyed by fire on Quarantine Rd early Monday morning. The truck is thought to be a Summerland truck which had just arrived in Nelson from Christchurch carrying cylin-ders of oxygen, nitrous oxide and acetylene.Nelson Fire Service station officer Craig Davies says the truck driver found his rear

trailer on fire, pulled over and called the fire service. “We couldn’t get anywhere near it for serveral hours, there was a 200 metre radius around the truck which was evacuated

as these cylinders have a bad habit of exploding.”Craig says a road block meant many nearby businesses were locked out. “We were trying to cool the cylinders down and that took a wee while, so busi-nesses had to stay away until it was safe.”Gym-goers were evacuated from City Fitness at around 6.40am with some report-ing that they heard a “boom, boom” before people came in saying there was a fire.

Blackcaps in Nelson: Some of the country’s top cricketers were in Nelson today as part of a national road show.Star batsman Ross Taylor and super-quick bowler Adam Milne were at the Nelson College for Girls gym, alongside White Ferns Amy Satterthwaite and Lea Tahuhu. The road show is making its way through the country ahead of a busy summer of cricket for the national sides, including two ODIs for the Black-caps at Saxton Field. The road show in-cluded plenty of activities to keep the kids busy and the opportunity to have posters, bats and caps signed by the cricketers.

Window smasher pleads guilty: A 23 year old man pleaded guilty to two charges of wilful damage at his first ap-pearance in the Nelson District Court on Friday. Jayge David Thornicroft suf-fered a gash to his leg while allegedly kicking windows in the city centre early this morning.

The incident happened at around 4am and was captured on CCTV in Mont-gomery car park. The 23 year old was kicking windows, but then collapsed after suffering a major cut to his leg. Another man arrived on the scene and more damage was done to a nearby car.A passerby saw the collapsed man and called the police and ambulance.

Tool thefts: Nelson Bays Police are in-vestigating three thefts that occurred overnight on 30 September targeting tools. Tools were stolen from a car-port in Motueka. A tool box and fuel cans were stolen from a secure yard in

Richmond and a lawnmower was stolen from a shed in Redwood Valley.Senior Sergeant John Price says anyone with information about who might be responsible should contact Nelson Po-lice. He says that while police did not have evidence to show the incidents were linked, the offending followed a similar pattern and all occurred on the same night. “It is timely to remind the public to take all reasonable precau-tions to keep their property safe. Un-fortunately, there are dishonest people in our community who will take advan-tage of an opportunity such as an open or unlocked shed or vehicle. “If anyone has information about this we’d be very keen to have a chat. Also, if anyone has been offered goods they think might be stolen they should give us a call.”

House prices up: House prices in Nel-son and Tasman have risen around 3 per cent in the past year, according to the QV House Prince Index. In Nelson the average house price is $417,934, a 3 per cent increase on the same time last year. The average price is higher in Tas-man, up 2.7 per cent to $426,852. Na-tionally, the residential property values for September have increased 12.6 per cent over the past year which is the fast-est rate since April 2006. Values rose 4.2 per cent over the past three months and are now 30.9 per cent above the previ-ous market peak of late 2007.

Nelson students have traditionally left home to gain a tertiary qualification by studying at universities around the country - but the tide may be turning. An increasing number of students are preferring the cheaper option of studying closer to home, says Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. Instead of graduating from university with a basic degree and a $60,000 student loan, NMIT director of marketing and international development, Virginia Watson, says students are realising they can get the same degree at NMIT and end up with “virtually no debt”.Virginia says there are numerous examples of Nelson students returning home from universities to continue their studies at NMIT.Laura Duquemin, 21, who left Otago University, where she was studying for a teaching degree, to do a Bachelor of Commerce at NMIT, says she came back to Nelson

because she was more comfortable here. “I felt that university wasn’t for me.” She prefers the smaller NMIT classes and tutors that “take the time to work with you.” “Also, it’s definitely better being home and having your friends and family around,” she says.Abbey Paterson, 24, was at Canterbury University before the earthquakes and, afterwards, decided to switch to a commerce degree at NMIT.“Coming to NMIT showed me there was a better way to study,” she says. “It’s quite a different feel when tutors actually know my name.”

One of Nelson’s most prolific figures is being remembered for his contributions to the city this week, 100 years on from his death. Once described as “Nelson’s grand old man,” philanthropist Thomas Cawthron is now lo-cal household name, and with-out him some of the city’s most iconic landmarks and institu-tions would not be here today. Born 1833 in England, Thomas moved to New Zealand at the age of 15 and worked various jobs in Nelson and Wellington before moving to the Australian gold fields where he contracted to carry supplies to the miners. He returned to Nelson, where he stayed and built his fortune. He started contracting on the Dun Mountain and began lending money, at ‘appropriate interest rates,’ to his ‘less thrifty’ work-mates. He also began a thriv-ing business at Port Nelson as a shipping agent. As his investments grew, so did his profits - and he was al-ways one to make the most of new business opportunities. When the arrival of steam ships brought an increased demand for coal, he became involved in the development of the Enner Glynn Coal Mine, and when gold was discovered in Golden

Bay, he supplied miners equip-ment to the area. It was not until his retirement in 1884 that he looked for ways to use his fortune to benefit the Nelson community. He lent 700 pounds to the Nel-son Institute Library and Muse-um for alterations and additions to its Hardy Street building, and when the old building burned down in 1906, he gifted 500 pounds in 1911 to complete its replacement. He also helped to finance extensions and ad-ditions to Nelson hospital, and fund a new nurse’s home. In 1912 he donated 5000 pounds to the Nelson School of Music, and a loan of 2000 pounds. He also bought and installed the pipe organ that is still used there today. In the same year he paid for the continuation of the posts and chains on Rocks Rd, and gifted 1,000ha near Dun Mountain to the Nelson City Council as a public scenic and recreation reserve, known as Cawthron Park. The Nelson cathedral steps – correctly called the Cawthron Steps - were also financed en-tirely by Cawthron.

The best-known memorial to Cawthron is the Cawthron Insti-tute, which his will provided for. It opened in 1921 and remains a world-class science research centre. Trust Board Secretary at the Cawthron Institute, Judene Ed-gar, says that he made the great-est philanthropic contribution to Nelson city. “In his day, he was known as a shrewd businessman and people didn’t understand his generosity,” she says. “There are lots of heartwarming things he did, and there were so many other sides to him.” For example, the reason he in-stalled the chains and posts on Rocks Rd wasn’t because it looked good – it was for safety. “He did it because a man fell and was seriously injured, and he fi-nancially helped his wife, too,” says Judene. “That’s the part of Thomas we often don’t get to hear.” He was also known for helping anyone in genuine distress - paying the medical bills of poor families, and supporting disaster relief funds. “He saw the future and understood the potential of the Nelson province,” says Judene. “There was no com-mercial gain for him - he was protecting the environmental aspect of our region.”

The Nelson Wedding Show was once again full to the brim with inspiration for brides and grooms-to-be. This year the event was held at Saxton Stadium and organiser Sharron Page-Moreton says she was extremely happy with the venue and how it was laid out. “It was a new venue, we were at the NMIT last year, mainly because the Trafalgar Centre was still not up and going,

so we chose to go to a bigger venue to see how it would work and it worked really well. The space was amazing, the lay out worked really well and the exhibitors were all very happy.”With over 60 exhibitors on hand for advice and the ability to help create anyone’s dream wedding, it’s no wonder the event managed to attract hundreds of people. Organisers are still to reach a final tally but they say public numbers were greater than last

year. As well as a range of exhibits including equipment hire, photographers, wedding stationery and cakes, the Nelson Wedding Show also incorporated a fashion show featuring bridal designs from New Zealand designer Sophie Voon. Organisers wish to say “a very big thank you to all the exhibitors who participated - the standard was high and feedback fantastic.”

The Brook Sanctuary Trust has received a boost of $127,000 to help complete the next stages of its development.Associate Conservation Minister Nicky Wag-ner yesterday announced Community Con-servation Partnership Fund grants for projects in the Nelson and Marlborough regions, with support for conservation of long-tailed bats and native birds, and restoration of local wet-lands.The funding will allow the trust to eradicate pests within the site, initiate pest monitoring and prepare native species for reintroduction.“The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary will al-low native birds, including the New Zealand falcon, yellow-crowned parakeet, weka and robins, to flourish along with 250 species of native plants,” says Nicky. “The 715 hectare sanctuary is expected to transform the surrounding area over time as young native birds disperse from the protected site.”The fund will also provide $113,000 to help conservation efforts for the New Zealand long-tailed bat in the Upper South Island, and the Grovetown Lagoon restoration project has also received funding.Nicky says she is thrilled to see a range of com-munity conservation projects – from birds to bats to wetlands – supported in the Nelson and Marlborough regions and she looks forward to hearing about the good results in years to come.

BLOOD PRESSURE CHECK: President of Rotary of Nelson, Roger Sanson, gets his blood pressure checked by St John’s Ma-rie Albertson. Rotary and St John partnered up last Saturday to offer the public free blood pressure checks as part of the Stroke Foun-dation of New Zealand’s Down with Blood Pressure programme. Nelson New World saw around 150 members of the public tested between 10am and 2pm on the day, which was an increase on last year's numbers. Roger says there were also several people who were referred on for more medical as-sistance. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Paula Nicholas and Cherrill Cooper believe it’s time to celebrate this wonderful nation and they’re doing it through song.Their aim, in a nutshell, is to see Kiwis come together at gathering points throughout New Zealand at 12 noon on Sunday, October 25, and sing the country’s national anthem. The event was created by the two Richmond ladies who both wished to unite the country through the words of our national anthem, and for the last few weeks preparations have been all go. “About 14 months ago I felt that people weren’t very patriotic, and when you see other countries they are very patriotic when they sing their national anthem, so I decided to download our national anthem,” says Cherrill. “I felt that we needed to get it so people could read it and understand it. I back-to-backed it by putting English on one side and Maori on the other, then I sat there and I folded it and it came to the size of a credit card, [it’s printed on paper that doesn’t rip] and it fits in your wallet.”After the idea for using them on Anzac Day failed to eventuate, Paula and Cherrill joined

forces after being introduced to each other by Paula’s mother – Cherrill’s friend.Paula came up with the date and they combined their ideas into NZ Anthem – One Voice. Already their Facebook page has reached 60,000 people and not just within New Zealand. Many Kiwis currently living overseas have shown their love for the idea, as well as the mayor’s of Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough, and both local MPs. Set to be held on Labour Day, the event requires people to register a gathering point on the Facebook page so people can then see places where they can congregate to sing the national anthem. While a complete list of the gathering points can be found on the page at NZ Anthem

One Voice, some of the local areas include Richmond Mall, Washbourn Gardens, Richmond Baptist Church and Anzac Park in Nelson. Gathering points have also been registered in Blenheim, Picton, Christchurch and even one in Redding, USA. There is still plenty of time to register a gathering point, instructions can be found on the Facebook page, and if you are unable to attend one of the registered points. Cherrill and Paula encourage people to sing the national anthem wherever they may be. Words can also be downloaded off the events Facebook page. For more information about registering a gathering point or the event in general, email Paula and Cherrill at [email protected].

Although it’s one of the easiest ways to sell your car, parking it on the side of a busy road with a ‘for sale’ sign in the window could actually land you with a fine. There has been an increase in cars for sale on some of Nelson’s busiest roads, which has prompted the Nelson City Council to give a “friendly reminder” to residents that there is a bylaw in place that makes it an offence.Mandy Bishop, Manager Consents and Compliance at the council, says it is happening more frequently in the weekends and the main problem areas are Waimea Rd, Main Rd Stoke, and Nayland Rd, or specific areas next to the State Highway.“The potential danger is when drivers become distracted by these vehicles or slow down to look,” she says. “Vehicles for sale on the side of the road can also reduce parks for other people and negatively impact on the look of a neighbourhood - if they start to accumulate in specific areas, the street can start to look a bit like a car yard.”“This has been an on-going issue, however from time to time this activity does increase. It often starts with one car, then others follow suit.”The council can issue infringement notices for those who breach the bylaw, which is a $40 fine, but sellers usually get a warning first. “Generally we contact the owner of the vehicle, who then removes the vehicle once they are told it is an offence,” she says.Mandy says there is no issue with a vehicle being used or driven with a ‘for sale’ sign in the window - it is only an offence if it is parked on the road or on council land, principally for the purpose of selling or storing.

Merger should be public:It is disappointing that Nelson city councillors voted to move

discussion about the level of funding for regional development to be 'pub-lic excluded.' Especially because NCC commits over $1 million a year to eco-nomic and tourism service delivery. The merger of the Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency and Nelson Tasman Tourism may result in all funding going to tourism.Ratepayers have a right to open discus-sion of such matters. This was a key is-sue in the last election, but councillors have conveniently forgotten that be-cause of vested interests.Council must be above such nonsense. Open government is the only way to discuss matters that have relevance to the levies imposed on ratepayers.Dan McGuire.

Roundabout problems:Indications on roundabouts. Is the indicater lever just below the

steering wheel now on all cars, just a thing not be used leaving roundabouts? I now find this to be quite frustrating when waiting to go. Dave Familton.

Man kicks in city windows:Why didn't "they" let the bloody idiot bleed out. Now someone's

not only going to have to fix the win-dows, but they're going to have to waste time and effort repairing a damaged hu-man - and will it prove to be even re-motely worth it? Maybe the experience will prove transformative. Let's hope so. Jim Mitchell.

Hope they send him the bill for the window. Brian Gower.

Truck fire in Tahuna:Yea, they won't let us down to work, so coffee back at home.

Peter Oliver.

Holy moly. I wondered what the bangs were. Nickie Skinner.

Wow, wondered what all the noise was. Thanks [nelsonlive.

co.nz] for letting us know. Mark French.

Quite pleased I never went to the gym this morning. Mary

Saxon Faulkner.

Really, in just a few minutes it was a huge fire.

Martine Kessler.

Rates concerns:Over the last few weeks I have been collecting information on

this year’s rate increases, NCC stated publicly that we had an average rate increase of 3.6 per cent. My investiga-tion so far indicate that residential rates have actually increase between 5.2 per cent and 5.4 per cent. I further believe that NCC have tried to cover this up by adding the $198.90 water line charge on this year's rates. Also, I have found that many central city commercial properties have had rate increases of over 9 per cent, so how NCC can arrive at a 3.6 per cent aver-age I do not know? Robert Renshaw

House prices up 3 per cent:And what's driving them up, Aucklanders coming down here

and buying up large? Brenda Kenny.

Salisbury School:Given that Salisbury School is down to two students, perhaps

its time it be re-purposed into a refugee resettlement centre. Scott Williamson.

This was needed to allow for easier transfer of animals in and out of Natureland. Club members took 236 hours of work to build this facility. This is a continuation of support the club has given Natureland this year and follows completion of a Kakariki Breeding aviary and an Isolation cage. The total hours donated to the Natureland Trust this year has been 636.

Entries for a "twisted fashion show" are be-ing sought by the organisers of a climate change campaign group.‘Hot Fashion for a Hot Planet’ is a com-munity project run by Nelson-based cam-paign group 'Clean Energy Action'. It will culminate in a twisted fashion show held at the Boathouse in Nelson on 24 November 2015.

Organisers are putting out an open call to artists and climate defenders of all ages to create a piece of wearable art that expresses their feelings about climate change. This fashion show is a platform to showcase en-trants' creative response to the unsettling prospect of climate change, using wearable art as a language to engage people, inspire them to take positive action and get com-

munities across the Top of the South to work together to find future-proofed solu-tions.Entrants can choose to model their crea-tions on the night, or get other models to show them off.“Hot Fashion for a Hot Planet aims at mo-bilizing our collective creativity to deliver the most important political message of

our times and have a blast doing it with a twisted fashion party,” says one of the or-ganisers, Verena Maeder. Depending on the quality of entries, an exhibition at the Refinery Art Space will follow, to take the message to the wider public.

NEW SHOWHOME OPENING SOON

0800 86 00 00The Stonewood Homes Nelson team is proud to unveil their latest show home, which can aptly be described as a piece of architectural genius. From their brand new ‘Your Style’ designer range, Stonewood Homes is extremely proud of what this home showcases and what the range has to offer their clients -that being an architecturally designed building, capable of meeting a number of client requirements both in size and it’s fit-out. The show home measures 239 metres square, however, if your budget, lifestyle, section or fam-

ily requirements mean you don’t need a home that size, Stonewood Homes have three other options, all mirroring the same architectural design. There are also a number of standard levels of fit-out that you can choose from, depending on your lifestyle, require-ments and your budget. These options start with their first choice specifica-tion featuring more economical solu-tions regarding fit-out material, floor coverings and front of wall bathroom ware etc. The ‘Essential’ range goes a step up in terms of quality, style and

price. The ‘Classic’ range, which you can view first hand in their show room, is their high-spec mod-el featuring over height doors and ceilings that create grandeur and spaciousness and premium quality fit-out materials. Add to this the ‘Eco Sure’ range and the ability to create your own spec by mixing and matching, and you have the entire spectrum covered. Clients can base their fit-out on their preferred range before selecting key ar-eas of their home that they would like to upgrade, whether it’s the carpet, kitchen, bathroom or any other aspects of their home. Stonewood Homes Nelson is thrilled to open the

doors of their show home to the public, and while the grand opening won’t be until this weekend, there are plenty of things you can look forward to admiring. The home features the latest coloured laminex kitchen ware, stone bench tops, with a feature kitchen bulkhead, high quality tiling throughout, feature fire place, a double shower in the ensuite and in the main bathroom people will be interested in the stand alone, raised bath. The entire house has been upgraded with high spec carpet, a ducted heat pump system, the usual double glazing and, being architecturally de-signed, it also has quite a presence from the street.

Director, Rhys Horncastle and general manager, Brent Stewart lead the dedicated Nelson team from Stonewood Homes.

Proud to work with Stonewood Homes

Stonewood Homes new Show Home is a stunning example of their top of the ine specification, including a sunny lounge with views of the courtyard and garden, a spacious kitchen withinnovative features and the latest coloured laminex kitchenware. The stylish main bathroom features a modern, stand-alone, raised bath and quality tiling throughout.

The show home is well suited to everyone’s living arrangements, be it a couple, older people or a family, and the layout is such that you can work from home in a purpose built office space. The Stonewood team invite you to come and explore their pride and joy, and fall in love with it as they have. The show home will normally be open on Monday to Friday from 10am until 4pm and on the weekends from 1pm until 4pm. However, for their grand opening weekend, beginning this Saturday, the home will be open to everyone from 11am until 4pm. Stonewood

Homes Nelson sales consultants will be permanently based in the show home, and to meet the growing needs of the company, an additional consultant will soon be working alongside them, helping people achieve their dream of owning a home. The grand opening weekend will also include some fantastic opening specials that will only be available by visiting the show home. While their show home is stunning in every way, Stonewood Homes has a myriad of other reasons why building with them is one of the

best decisions you can make. Qual-ity has always been at the forefront of their business and general man-ager, Brent Stewart, says quality goes into everything involved with building their clients homes. Qual-ity relationships between trades-men and suppliers, quality com-munication between clients and the Stonewood team and a quality finish on your home is what Stone-wood Homes Nelson is proud to achieve every time. “We’re a pro-gressive business, we’re just add-ing strings to our bow all the time. We’ve got great support from our

trades and suppliers and those peo-ple have been with us for a number of years. When you get that sort of loyalty shown between parties, it just speaks volumes on jobs.”Stonewood Homes was the regions most awarded builder in the 2014 Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition and they were equally successful this year, winning three awards includ-ing gold for the Placemakers New Homes between $300,000 and $400,000 and also the ITM New Homes up to $300,000 category. They also received a bronze award

for the Mitre 10 Renovations be-tween $250,000 and $500,000. “The awards we achieved make us very, very proud and it just shows that we’re at the top of our game,” says Brent. Winning a bronze award for reno-vations is a bit different for a group home building company but Brent says the team will look at any-body’s projects because Stonewood Homes specialises in diversity. “You can come to us with a design on a napkin and we can work off that, or we can work from our plan range. According to local hair removal expert Anne Michelle, the only long-term, permanent solution to unwanted hair is Electrolysis, and in the hands of a trained person it is pain-reduced and permanent. With over 30 years of treating women, Anne Michelle has seen the number of men getting treatment increase as well. “Most of the guys removal is from ears, nose, upper cheeks and neck, whereas the ladies get bikini line, chin, lip, eyebrows, underarms and even toes.” While technology has significantly reduced the amount of discomfort, Anne Michelle has a variety of numbing sprays and gels on hand. “When you come into my business you get a lovely comfy chair, aromatherapy, and some soothing music to help you relax, along with some great conversations and a little bit of humour. Bridgette Pretty, Director Pretty Accounting Ltd, was called a “trailblazer” in the Certified Practising Accountant global InPractice magazine, after setting up one of the first New Zealand CPA-branded public practices. Bridgette says she wouldn’t use this wording for herself, but has heard it used about her parent’s Pat and Christine Pretty and grandparents Jack and Pearl Pretty. Both sets of family members are well-known in Nelson. Between them they were in the hospitality industry for a combined 60 years, 10 of which Bridgette worked with her parents. “I have inherited hard-working genes,” she says; genes that have given her an unreserved respect for people, a great sense of humour and a zest for life. When she established her accountancy practice three years ago, Bridgette chose the name “Pretty Accounting” as a nod to her heritage. Bridgette’s mother Christine is practice manager, which is quite a role reversal for the pair. The practice, recently relocated to 181 Bridge Street in Nelson and with a Motueka base, is non-corporate and friendly, complementing Bridgette and Christine’s warm, engaging personalities and personalised, plain speaking approach to accountancy. Contact Bridgette today for professional advice and services to support your business.

It’s been a long time since Tri-umph have held anywhere near their current market share, but thanks to dealers like Filco Farm and Sport they are now leading the New Zealand sales of larger bikes. Triumph spe-cialise in 660 cc right up to the largest production bike, the Triumph Rocket, at 2300 cc. Regional export manager for Asia Pacific Triumphs, Mark McConnell, has visited the lo-cal Triumph dealer with a view to helping owner Dave Filer establish a “one world” show-room. Common around the world for major franchises but not so much motorcycles, it’s where the manufacturer picks strategic dealerships and makes them all the same, no matter where in the world you are. The benefits are huge to the custom-ers and it makes delivering the perfect sale and service much more streamlined. Also, the range of Triumph product and accessories is ex-tremely vast. This is only offered to high per-forming franchises around the globe. Nelson’s Filco Farm and

Sport are, in fact, based on per capita sales numbers, New Zea-land’s largest Triumph dealer. Dave attributes that not only to the fantastic product range but also the quality of staff he now

has. Triumph England employ over 2000 staff in their Hinckley Leicestershire factory and sales are increasing worldwide. The most popular bike for the

NZ market is the 900 speed master, with Dave riding a Tri-umph 800. Dave Filer expects to make an announcement in the new year regarding the new showroom.

Nelson motorbike dealer impresses world’s bestFour kaka have been introduced to their new home in the Abel Tasman National Park. The four female kaka are the first to be returned to the Abel Tasman National Park as part of the work of DOC and environmental trust Project Janszoon. The birds left DOC’s Te Anau Wild-life Centre by road early last week en route to Invercargill and an Air New Zealand flight to Christchurch. They then flew by charter flight to Takaka for the blessing at the Golden Bay Marae. The final leg of their journey involved a helicopter flight to a purpose-built aviary at Wainui Hut in the upper reaches of the Abel Tasman National Park. The kaka come from existing captive populations and have been raised in Te Anau, Dunedin and Invercargill. Kaka are very vulnerable to predators, and while there are historic accounts of large numbers in the Park in the late 1800s, only a handful remain and it is thought these are all male birds. Pest control undertaken by Project Janszoon means the relocated birds will have a good chance of re-estab-lishing a kaka population in the area.

There has been a great deal of coverage in the recent media concerning Methamphetamine (P) and, while it may seem like this is a new problem for New Zealand, its manufacture and use has been a significant problem over the past 15 years. Many people ask what effect Meth has on their lives as they have never had any interaction with drugs before and consequently don’t see the Meth problem as a hazard. Unfortunately, as many people have come to experience, both manufacturing Meth and smoking it for personal use leaves extremely harmful contamination in a property. If you purchase or live in a home carrying harmful residue, you will also become a victim of the Meth problem. Meth Screen provides a professional and discreet Meth residue screening service to help ensure you have peace of mind over your home or property purchase. Owner Kev Taylor dedicates a great deal of time delivering free presentations to various property professionals and anyone else who is interested in learning more about the problem which is present here in the Nelson region. Anyone purchasing a property should undertake a check for Methamphetamine contamination, so give Meth Screen a call today.

Forty years of pain won’t be eased, but for Nelson man Darryl Ware it will hopefully let other parents who have lost a young child know that they are not alone.Darryl and his wife lost their son when he was a toddler. Darryl says it is something you never get over but writing about his experiences is a positive way to re-member his boy.“It happened to our family nearly 40 years ago. It’s a circumstance that you don’t get over, you just learn to place it in the rest of your life and if you can get on with it well and good, but a lot of people don’t get on with it,” he says.Darryl has written a play about the ex-perience, Something About Losing a Child, which opens at Fairfield House this Thursday, in conjunction with Pro-

ject Butterfly.“I took it to Project But-terfly because it seemed to have the same ob-jectives,” says Darryl. “Eight years after my son died I wrote a story, it was entered in a short story competition and was placed in that.“Then I thought I could do better than that, be-cause neither my wife or I felt there was much use for a gravestone or plaque. But this play shows that people to whom this happens, are not alone.”Darryl wrote the play five years ago and says the audience will need tissues. The show will be per-formed over three nights and proceeds will go to Project But-terfly for their cuddle cots. It opens at 7.30pm on Thursday, October 8, and runs until Saturday night. Tickets are $10.

By Tim O’Connell

While the rest of the South

Island encountered rain, snow

and pestilence it was typical

Tasman sunshine at Kaiteriteri

Beach on Sunday as hundreds

descended on the shoreline for

the Riwaka School Mid-Winter

Festival.

Bands, performances and the

standard array of hot and tasty

food made for a welcome way

to spend a winter morning, while

children were entertained by

bouncy castles, mini jeeps and

trains as well as a big dig for

A duck and dip kind of day for winter fest

prizes around the golden sands.

The main attractions of the day

were the mid-winter dip and the

duck race, both of which drew

plenty of entries from locals and

out of towners keen to support

Riwaka School.

Fairies, bumblebees and

superheroes were among the

costumes on display as the swim-

mers gathered for the former.

Jeanette Clark from Lower

Moutere was found in pre-plunge

contemplation of the icy fate that

awaited her.

“Everyone has their bucket list

of things to do, and this is one of

mine,” she said.

With the tide in for the 11am

start of the dip there was a very

short run from the shore to the

ocean, leaving the hundred or so

brave folk who entered little time

to chicken out.

Admirably, a handful managed

to remain in the water for an

extended period of time to milk

the moment, although it should

be noted that most of these peo-

ple were female.

For the rest however, the

sequence of events once sub-

merged was akin to someone

abruptly hitting the rewind button

on a DVD.

The duck race was a slightly

more drawn out affair, yet attract-

ed just as much interest as the

earlier event, although it wasn’t

long before the nature of inani-

mate object racing set in and a

good portion of the entered ducks

were soon bobbing listlessly in

the lagoon,

Speaking to the Guardian after

an extremely successful day in

the sun, Riwaka School Principal

Fraser Campbell was ecstatic

with the public response to the

event.“There was just a real good

buzz around the place and a real

connection between the commu-

nity and school,” he said.

Showing leadership and

immense fortitude, Mr Campbell

took to the water for the dip along

with Deputy Principal Katherine

Sefton, a feat which he says was

“better than coffee”.

The Mid-Winter Festival raised

close to $9000 for the school, a

total which is believed to be up on

previous years.

HUGE SAVINGS ON ALL BUILDINGS*

Development boom for region

White water wonderMost of the 250 plus competitors at

the weekend’s Buller Festival were

from out of town, but Nelson boy

Tommy McDowell made sure he

was up there with the best – taking

out the C1 open men’s slalom.

The Buller Festival is New Zealand’s

premier white water event and at-

tracted a large crowd of out-of-town

competitors – including a former

Olympian from the UK.

The festival started off with the

popular boater cross, an event

which sees kayakers race together

down the river. Over the course of

the weekend there was also kayak

and canoe slalom, rafter cross, SUP

race and the classic cardboard cup,

which involves making a vessel out

of cardboard and tape and taking it

down the river.

The event is held every year and

showcases exactly why Murchison

is known as the “four river plains”,

with its top spots being used by

hundreds of competitors over the

weekend.Event spokesperson Sophia Mulder

says this was no doubt the biggest

weekend on the Murchison calen-

dar, with plenty of money spent in

the town. “I think this year we had a lot of

people coming from further. We

had a lot of international competi-

tors and not just professional ath-

letes but some just here for a good

social time,” she says.

“There was a good long queue eve-

rywhere, the Four Square was flat

out, the petrol station was flat out.

I don’t think they’ve sold as much

bread, meat and beer as they did this

weekend.”

slalom at the Buller Festival over the weekend.

A 120-site holiday park on Lower Queen

St, a $50 million lifestyle village on Wens-

ley Rd in Richmond and a 95 lot rural resi-

dential subdivision in Wakefield are the

latest developments to get the green light

as the Tasman district continues to grow.

Queen St Caravans and Motorhomes has

already started stage one of their holiday

park development which will be open in

time for next summer. Ben Nevis Holdings

had a resource consent for their 95 lot ru-

ral residential subdivision on Totara View

Rd, Edward St and Gossey Drive North in

Wakefield signed off last Tuesday, while

commissioners have approved the Olive

Estate lifestyle village at 109 Wensley Rd.

A resource consent for the Lower Queen

St holiday park was granted last Septem-

ber, and co-owner Rod Yarrell says they

are presently working on installing fencing

and the underground cabling and water

pipes. He says it has been a big job with

600 metres of trenches, 3.5 kilometres of

electric cabling and 210 metres of fencing.

“We’ve already spent four months on this

stage. We are powering-up 50 sites for self-

contained motorhomes and caravans and

then we’ll get started on the ablution block

and laundry.

“We have consents for 120 sites but we’ll

probably only put in around 90 so they’ll

all be a bit bigger. There’s also going to be

camping sites and 12 cabins but we won’t

be taking permanent residents.”

The holiday park is being developed on the

site of Rod and his partner Linda Manera’s

business, Queen St Caravans and Mo-

says they have already been getting inquir-

ies from prospective customers.

Still a volunteer at 94 years oldWhen Arthritis New Zealand needed a local volunteer

to help promote its cause and raise some money, the

man to put his hand up was a 94 year old World

War 2 veteran.Maurice Abrahams is a legend in Nelson. He still

plays in the Nelson Brass Band, has served as a

Freemason for more than 70 years and volunteers

for Arthritis NZ after developing two forms of ar-

thritis.Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active

life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu

swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard.

“But I only save the ladies,” he joked.

Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol

station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “commu-

nity concierge” washing windows and greeting custom-

ers. He handed out orange tokens which his customers

could use to vote for Arthritis NZ and help the charity

receive cash from Z, through its Good in the Hood pro-

motion. Maurice says he got relief from his treatment so

wanted to give back, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be offered

a job after his efforts. “Sue’s right into it and I just follow

along, but when people respond you feel good.”

Noisy plane’s 6am landingA noisy New Zealand Post aeroplane is ex-

pected to land in Nelson at 6am every day

for at least three weeks, which could wake

people from their sleep, admits Nelson

Airport Ltd.NZ Post will bring its mail from the North

Island to Nelson for three to four weeks in

April, as an upgrade of navigation equip-

ment is carried out at Blenheim Airport,

where it usually goes. The work in Blenhe-

im means the plane – a Fokker 27 Friend-

6am and its noise will have a “noticeable”

impact. But the 6am landing is much better than

3am, which is when NZ Post usually flys

in and the time they had proposed to land

in Nelson. Nelson Airport Ltd chief execu-

tive Kaye McNabb says the delay to 6am

will have a big impact on NZ Post, but they

weren’t willing to have such an impact on

locals during the middle of the night.

“If the aircraft arrived at 3am I am sure we

would be inundated with calls wondering

what was going on,” says Kaye.

“After discussions with the operator it

was agreed the aircraft would delay its ar-

rival until 6am, to minimise the effect. The

changed schedule will have a significant

impact on NZ Post with the inevitable flow

on effect through the distribution and de-

livery chain, so we’re pleased that the op-

erator has been so willing to co-operate for

the benefit of local residents.”

The first early morning landing is expected

to be on April 7.

Stoke's Jacinda Beyer-Riejer competes in the javelin at the NZCT South Island Masters Games at Saxon Field. Photo: Chris Conroy/Shuttersport

Stoke athlete competes in a dozen events at Masters GamesStoke's Jacinda Beyer-Rieger only intend-ed competing in three events at the NZCT South Island Masters Games which ended after nine days of competition in Nelson on Sunday. But that soon changed with Jacinda en-tering "11 or 12" events as she got carried away in the excitement of the games. The 48-year-old was one of 2200 athletes who participated in the games and, like Jacinda, many of them competed in more than one of the 42 sports."I started with three events, but then I

thought I'd try athletics as well," Jacinda says. "I hadn't done it since school but it was so much fun.""I started with the 200m and got a bronze in that, and then thought I'll try the 3000m and I won gold Then I tried the javelin - I'd never thrown a javelin in my life and had to get someone to show me how to do it - and I won a silver.""Each day I'd go to the registration and say 'what am I going to do today.' I just kept putting the entry fee on my husband's credit card."

"I think I ended up doing 11 or 12 events. It was an absolutely amazing week. " Sport Tasman's event organiser Rita Mer-riman says Jacinda was one of the many competitors who "got caught up in the fun of the games and entered in more events." Nelson's Lyn Smith, 52, was another en-thusiastic athlete, competing in 10 differ-ent sports, while Upper Moutere 81-year-old Arthur Dunkley entered in a number of track and field events, winning the 5km cross-country run in a respectable 34 min-utes 49 seconds. "Things like cycling and

athletics have a lot of events that are simi-lar so people tend to enter two or three events in those sports, but a lot of people just give everything a go," she says. Rita says the games were a big success with the three new sports, Waka Ama, stand-up paddle boarding and indoor triathlon, proving especially popular. She says all the events were well run thanks to the hard work of sports coordinators and an army of 250 volunteers.Nelson will be hosting the South Island Masters Games again in 2017.

Nelson’s Inline Hockey team are national champions after an overtime win in Hamilton last week.Nelson Whalers won the sen-ior men’s grade at nationals, the first time in the club’s his-tory.Goalie Sean McShea won MVP goalie of the tourna-ment, while Vinnie Fuller won MVP player of the grade. The Whalers got off to a tough start, playing the first nine minutes of their first pool match without their star goal-ie, who was late due to a flight delay. The score was 2-2 when Sean arrived, but once he went in goal the Nelson side ran out 11-7 winners.Nelson then beat New Plym-outh Ravens 9-1, Manawatu 8-2 and Rimutaka Renegades 5-2 to remain undefeated heading into the semi-final. There, the Whalers beat the Hamilton Devils 4-2.In the final Nelson played Mount Wellington Panthers,

the team they beat 11-7 on day one of the tournament. But it took them until over-time to beat them a second time, 8-7.

Alethea Stove says the win was fantastic. “It’s certainly the biggest re-sult in recent times. We are the

only South Island team so we have to be pretty committed to keep travelling up north. We’re delighted.”

Rai Valley TIL are proud to support The NNCC Hunting Competition

Nelson North Country Club know how to organise a good pig hunt, so get an entry form and get involved in this year’s hunting event. For over 20 years the annual hunting competition has been a major fundraiser for the club, and without the continued support from sponsors and participants the club facility wouldn’t be around today. Organisers have put a lot of time and effort into the event, working their fingers to the bone to make it a fun and enjoyable few days, not to mention one the whole family can appreciate. Not only is it a great benefit to the club, the Nelson North Country Club Hunting Competition is a great way to bring the locals together, with a bit of friendly rivalry thrown in. The event is open to everyone, not just club regulars, and once you’ve finished your day out in the back and beyond the club will be offering a great night of entertainment

and food to bring the competition to a close.Beginning on Friday, October 16, at 12pm, the hunt will run through until Saturday afternoon with the final weigh-in time being no later than 6pm. As usual, the average boar will take home the biggest prize of $600, followed by the heaviest at $400 and the biggest tusks will see someone pocket $100. The entrant with the heaviest stag will receive $300, average stag will get $200 and there will also be two special cash prizes up for grabs for pigs between 25 and 40kg. Kids entering into the competition are

free if they’re 13 and under and, although they aren’t eligible for spot prizes, they will still be able to take home some great rewards for the mixed

bag, heaviest goat, heaviest hare, heaviest possum and heaviest rabbit. This year organisers are also introducing a photo competition, so if you’re handy with a camera bring it along for the trip and do your best to snap a picture of the best hunting action shot, the best animal shot

and the best photo showing the kids getting involved. Organisers would like to thank Rob Gray Freight for sponsoring the section.

From 12pm onwards of Saturday, Nelson North Country Club will be accepting animals for the weigh-in, with children’s entertainment running throughout the afternoon. Activities on offer include mini jeeps, face painting, the balloon lady, bouncy castle, sausage sizzle, a lolly scramble and more. Thanks to the sponsorship of Nig Bryant Logging and Ross and Kath Morrison, the children’s entertainment will be free. All those who entered into the hunt will have their meals included in the entry fee and any extra meals will only be $10. At 8pm, Dog on Bonnet will provide some fantastic live music, so make sure you bring the whole family along. Spot prizes will also be given away during the evening but you have to be there to receive them.Entry forms to the Nelson North Country Club Hunting Competition can be picked

up from the club or downloaded off their website at www.nelsonnorthcountryclub.com with an entry fee of $40 per person. Entry forms are to be returned to the club no later than 9pm on Friday, October 16. The club would like to thank all their sponsors for making the hunt possible, including Chatham Tours, Mag & Turbo, Pestells Rai Bacon Co., MS Ford, Lone Star Nelson, Totara Brewing Co., Wayne Watson, JD Wells, The Rock 94.4FM and Bowater Toyota.
