Future of 623 is on the rocksThe future of 623 On the Rocks is uncertain as the potential buyer says negotiations have been “pushed back” due to some “problems”.Last week, Nelson Live reported that 623 On the Rocks was in liquidation, and 623 In the City was being put into vol-untary administration, owing $400,000.Administrator Geoff Falloon of Biz Res-cue, says that he is working closely with

Nelson City councillors were unanimous in their decision to press forward with the Trafalgar Centre upgrade, in a full council meeting last week. The $13 million upgrade to the earthquake-prone building was debated as being too expensive by members of the public during the meeting, but councillors have agreed that the project, despite its hefty price tag, is a “must do” for the city.An engineer’s report was presented to council on July 16, which recommended the demolition and rebuild of the northern end of the centre, including the Victory Room, foyer and toilets, strengthening work on the western edge of

the new southern end, and $7 million worth of work to the main building. Pulling it down and building a new venue on the same site would cost $25-$30 million.Mayor Rachel Reese called the project “the most challenging for this council,” but concluded that it is “now time to get this building fixed, open, and the city humming again.”The centre, which has been closed since December 2013, has put pressure on other venues in the region, such as Saxton Stadium. “It will be a great relief for many to have events out of Saxton,” says Rachel. “It has been very hard work, but it’s time to move ahead.”Councillors present at the meeting were in full support of

the upgrade, which will give the building a lifetime of another 50-plus years. Councillor Brian McGurk assured those in attendance that the council is getting the best possible price for a “complex” rebuild.Councillor Mike Ward stated that much of cost will be returned to the city, especially if there are a couple of really good events. Councillor Ian Barker agreed, saying Nelson needs to

take the opportunity to bring the Trafalgar Centre back to what it was previously intended to be, but it has to be marketed properly. Councillor Gaile Noonan supported the decision wholeheartedly, as did Councillor Matt Lawry, who admitted to a “few sleepless nights” over the centre. Councillor Eric Davey says he was very happy they can get the building open again and even hinted at a week-long opening celebration. The next steps are to complete the pricing and detailed design for the for the southern extension and strengthening of the main building, and develop options for the scope and design of the rebuild. Construction is expected to start in September.

$13M upgrade approvedWork on Trafalgar Centre to start September

Now it’s time to get this building fixed, open, and the

city humming again.

- Mayor Rachel Reese.

Power company gives $8.3M backNelson power users will effec-tively get $150 in their back pockets, thanks to Network Tasman.Every power user in the Nelson and Tasman regions – exclud-ing central Nelson – will get the $150 discount, a total of $8.3 million. Network Tasman is a con-

sumer-owned local electricity distributor. The company also expects to provide a further discount in December 2015 and discounted $8.1 million for customers last winter. Network Tasman CEO Wayne Mackey says virtually all of the company’s 38,500 customers will get a discount, which will

average out at about $150 for each customer. “Eligible consumers will re-ceive a discount irrespective of which electricity retailer they choose. Switching retailers does not alter this entitlement because the discount comes from Network Tasman and not the retailer.”

Nelson Cat Club could have staged a produc-tion of Cats last week-end with a colourful mix of feline personali-ties and fur coats at the Nelson Cat Show. There were 119 cats entered in the show at Hope Hall, which was a championship com-petition run to national standards. The event featured owners and cats from around the country. The winning cats were from Fielding and Christchurch.

We’ll get you moving Whakatu Drive speeds ‘unsurvivable’: A seven day survey of Whakatu Drive motorists shows an “alarming” number of speeding drivers, with the average speed clocking in at 113kmh. Police received information from NZTA vehicle counts that showed speeds de-tected over a seven day period of 4000 vehicles on Whakatu Drive. The highest speed detected during that period was 198kmh. One motor-ist clocked at 170kmh received a nine month disqualification when they ap-peared in the Nelson District Court recently. Nelson Bays Road Policing Senior Sergeant Grant Andrews says the speeds would most likely be unsur-vivable.

New seafood and marine centre wel-comed: A new Plant & Food Research facility is being developed in Nelson, in agreement with Port Nelson, as part of a new collaborative industry hub. The new 2300m2 facility, next to Plant & Food Research’s existing Maitai fin-fish facility, will provide office and labo-ratory space for 38 research and support staff, bringing the total Plant & Food Research staff at Port Nelson to 52.

It is anticipated that construction will commence before the end of this year and will be completed in late 2016.

Nelson environment gets $6M boost: A $6 million, 10-year project dedicated to protecting and restoring Nelson’s en-vironment was officially launched at the Suter Gallery on Wednesday. Nelson City Council’s Nelson Nature programme of work invests $500,000 a year, increasing to $650,000 by year five, plus inflation, in the region’s bio-diversity.

Are Nelsonians drinking enough wa-ter? Over 60 per cent of Nelsonians aren’t getting enough water, according to an independent survey commis-

sioned by SodaStream New Zealand. The survey revealed that most Nelso-nians drink around three to four glasses of water a day, with three out of five people believing they are not drinking enough of the stuff.

Originair almost ready for takeoff: The first of Originair’s planes is getting a fitout with all the bells and whistles as the interior installation is finalised.Nelson-based company National Air-craft Interiors were given the contract to custom design the seats and parts of the interior of the aircraft, along with RepairCraft who perform line main-tenance on the fleet. Originally built in the late 80s, the aircraft required an extensive refit with new padded leather seats, yellow detailing and carpet in-stalled in the plane. Robert Inglis and partner Nicki Smith founded Originair this year in an effort to directly link Nel-son, Palmerston North, and Wellington. The inaugural flight will be held on Au-gust 12.

Turntables are back in fashion, so naturally the most fashionable music shop in town has the latest and greatest range.Beggs Musicworks have always sold turntables but owner Tim Babbage says demand has risen over the past year or so and it’s easy to see why. The new genera-tion of turntables are sleek, stylish and the sound is superior to their predecessors.Tim says while mod-ern digital music is easy to use and sounds good, there is something more con-sidered about listen-ing to a record. “Part of it is the ceremony and part of it is get-ting back to the roots of music, sitting back and enjoying it. You can listen to your phone anywhere, with this you have to sit in your chair and relax.”Beggs carry the Pro-Ject range of turntables, which range in price from $549 to $4999. He says turntables can come in all sorts of colours and styles to match your home décor.

“Turntables are cool and they’re cool for a cou-ple of reasons. One is the look, we talk about digital these days and using Spotify and cloud, but there is nothing quite like feeling of getting a record, looking at the cover and putting on

your record. There’s something really cool about it.”Tim says the popu-larity of turntables means there are more companies adding them to their range. “But Pro-Ject are one of those companies who have been mak-ing them for years and telling everyone how great they are.”Turntables can be plugged into your ex-isting amplifier and if your receiver doesn’t have a turntable in-

put; Beggs have a pre-amp that can sort that out.To have a closer look at the range of turntables at Beggs Musicworks, pop in and see the team at 264 Hardy St, Nelson

Opposition to the Nelson City Council’s strict woodburner policy is organising itself ahead of the next round of consultation this week.Vocal opponents to the bylaw have formed the Wood Burner Lobby Group ahead of a second community meeting as part of a review of the bylaw.Among the founders are former Nelson Grey Power president Neville Male, Graeme O’Brien, Gaire Thompson, Greg West, Melissa Short, Peter Olorenshaw and Harry Pearson.Harry says the group believes fires are a cost-effective way of heating, and if the right wood is used, has little effect on the air quality. “We feel strongly that the council isn’t doing enough. We want people in the community to come forward, especially people who are battling the effects of cold homes.”The rules around woodburners were part of the council’s Air Quality Plan, which aimed to do something about winter smoke in the city. Monitoring and modelling work

last winter showed that there is potential capacity for additional woodburners in central Nelson, Atawhai and Stoke. The council is holding a second public meeting on Thursday to update the community on progress with its Air Plan Review. This follows a meeting held in March to better understand the key issues from the community, and how these could be addressed through the review.Along with a general update, the upcoming meeting will summarise feedback received so far, discuss the various options the review will consider and check whether any suggestions have been missed. The aim of the review is to find a fair and reasonable solution to keeping people warm in their homes, while still meeting the National Environmental Standard for Air Quality set by the government.

The woodburner meeting will be held at the Trafalgar Pavillion from 5.30pm to 7pm this Thursday night. Everyone is welcome.

Nelson cycling enthusiast Graham Vercoe has been airlifted to hospital in Dignes Le Bagnes in France with serious injuries, after crashing while riding down a steep hill off the Col d’Allos in the French Alps.Graham was with a group of Nelson cyclists following the Tour de France when the accident happened last week. He was taken to hospital by rescue helicopter and admitted to intensive care with injuries to his upper body.Graham’s wife Shirley posted

on Facebook that “he has been moved out of intensive care and into a recovery ward. Awaiting more scans Monday on lung and shoulder”. One of the Nelson riders

travelling with Graham posted that Graham “fell badly coming down Col d’Allos. Chopper to hospital at Dignes Le Bagnes.”

Graham’s crash continued a horror run for Nelson road cyclists, with Tasman Wheelers rider Richard Bamfield fracturing a finger and elbow in a crash around the Mt Heslington circuit on Saturday.A month earlier, Tasman Wheelers rider Ian Worthington broke his hip in a race and needed a hip replacement as a result of the crash. Two weeks ago, Nelson triathlete and ironman competitor Jude Vincent fractured her elbow in a training ride.

Mapua’s popular ice-cream parlour and cafe, Hamish’s, closed on Sunday after operat-ing successfully for nine years, but it shouldn’t be too long be-fore another one opens on the Mapua Wharf.Hamish’s closed after the lease on their building expired and owner Adele Calteaux decided not to relocate to a new com-mercial building to be con-structed on the site of the for-mer Mapua Aquarium. Adele

says she is disappointed to be closing but has no other op-tion because she can’t afford the $60,000 to $80,000 cost of relocating her business. But last week, the Tasman Dis-trict Council confirmed that a new ice-cream parlour and cafe operator has signed a lease for one of the seven spaces in the council-owned Shed 4 devel-opment. Construction of the $1.095 million development has been tendered to Gibbons Construction and will start on August 1 and completed in

October. “The people signed in the last two weeks and will be operating a cafe and ice-cream parlour business,” corporate services manager Mike Drum-mond says. “They already run another sim-ilar business but don’t want to go public with their name just yet.”Council commercial manager Gene Cooper says five of the seven spaces have already been leased and he expects the re-maining two leases to be signed before the end of the month.

Nelson Cathedral bid farewell to one of their much loved volunteers on Sunday, who is retiring after 34 years of service.Carol Hurd has been a helping hand at the cathedral since 1981, after she moved to Nelson from Dunedin with her husband Michael, who was to be the dean of the cathedral. Sadly, Michael passed away whilst young, leaving Carol a young widow with a young family. Carol stayed on in Nelson and has been a valued volunteer at the cathedral ever since. “I guess I naturally fell into it,” she says. “I love the building, and have spent the last 15-20 years looking after it and keeping it up to scratch.”Each day at 8am she opens up the building, and then later on, she drives down and locks up the building for the night. Over the years, Carol has arranged the annual Festival of Christmas Trees, helped with the annual Family Fun Night, managed the bookstall and its resources, and helped to set up the cathedral for services on Sunday. Debbie Williams, administrator at the cathedral, says that Carol is the one who “keeps things ticking along,” and will be very hard to replace.“Carol’s a whirlwind,” she says. “She’s the one who makes sure there are supplies for the morning teas after the services, and makes sure our kitchen is clean and tidy. She keeps the candles topped up and makes sure that there is paper for

people to leave their memories for loved ones. “Whenever there is a funeral here, Carol is often the one making the tea. And if there’s a concert or event here in the evening, Carol is often the one who will stay on late, making sure the

building is tidy before locking up.”If that wasn’t enough, Carol is also a member of the Anglican Association of Women and still finds time to volunteer at the Citizens Advice Bureau.Carol has just celebrated her 70th birthday, and will be returning to Dunedin to be closer to her family. “I’ll miss my friends, and the music. I’ll miss the whole place,” she says.Debbie says that Carol will be “leaving a large hole” at the cathedral. “Carol is a wonderful example of committed volunteer, supporting both the community and her cathedral.”

Swapping a cold Nelson win-ter for a roasting hot Saudi summer wasn’t the only ma-jor adjustment for Riverside Pool manager Dave McKen-zie.Dave was offered the chance to spend a month in Saudi Arabia by his employer CLM, where he helped lo-cal swim schools. There he had to get used to late night s w i m m i n g , prayer time in the middle of a swim lesson and teaching only boys.“The sisters of the swimmers would be there but they weren’t allowed anywhere near the pool,” says Dave, who returned from his ad-venture last month. The Kingdom of Saudi Ara-bia is wealthy, due to its huge oil reserves, and is a strict Muslim country. That means women are fully cov-ered in their Burkua and do not swim or drive. They also pray five times a day. “You may be supermarket shopping and prayer time would start and you’d be

locked in the supermarket while the employees are praying. Same at the pool, people would just hop out of the pool and go pray.”During Ramadan, Muslims do not eat or drink during daylight hours. That means they don’t swim either, as the water could get in their mouth. Dave says it means the pools open at 9.30pm and run lessons until 1.30am.He says adjusting to the Mus-

lim culture was the biggest dif-ference, along with the heat and language, but he enjoyed his month there and the people.

“They were really friendly people and what struck me is that they knew a lot about New Zealand. They knew it was green and cold in the winter. When I told them there was a frost in Nelson, or about ice or even snow, their reaction was ‘no way, it can’t be that cold’.”Dave’s main role was helping improve health and safety standards, training staff and to help develop a swim school at each pool.He says their approach to

swimming is much differ-ent to ours. “In New Zea-land, kids need to learn how to swim because we’re sur-rounded by water and it’s a safety issue. Over there it’s really just a sport. They don’t need to know how to swim, it’s only if they want to.”There wasn’t much time for sightseeing but Dave says he

did manage to do some driv-ing, where filling a car with petrol costs just $4. “I came home with an appreciation for how different it is. Things move a lot faster here and our standards are really high here. Their pools are really good and have a lot of poten-tial, hopefully with us there we can help them grow it.”

The Lemongrass - Opening Soon17a Maxwell Rd, Blenheim

It’s been a busy time lately for Bu-nga and Nutta-vut Krataitong, owners of Chai Yo Restaurant and takeaways in Richmond, with a couple of restau-rants to run, the development of another new res-taurant in Blenheim and a brand new baby! As if coping with a new baby wasn’t enough, this busy family decided to open anoth-er restaurant as well, and The Lemongrass is due to open in Blenheim very soon.Bu-nga says “It wouldn’t be possible if we didn’t have such a dedicated team of staff sup-porting us.” They are delighted that the wonderful team in Richmond have continued to operate the restaurants so well, ensuring the continued sup-port of the local community. “We’d particularly like to thank our faithful cus-tomers for their continued loyalty and support,” says Bu-nga. “I have really missed having regular contact with everyone, but it is great to catch up with them when I come home to Nelson.”Another piece of exciting news is the sale of Chai-Yo Takeaways in Nile Street, Nelson. Don’t expect any big changes though, as the new owners are Panya and Suratda Vangvean, and they have been with Chai-Yo since the day it first opened, with chef Suratda being responsible for setting up the original menus and helping Bu-nga and Nuttavut establish their successful businesses. “Panya and

Suratda have done a wonderful job for us and we are excited to see them buy the business, and know they will continue to do a wonderful job for their customers,” says Bu-nga.When you are over in Blenheim, be sure to call in and say hi to Bu-nga and try out their amazing res-

taurants. You’ve got plenty to choose from; Bamboo Garden, Chai-Yo Carvery and the new-est venture, The Lemongrass which will serve Asian Fusion, with a pretty good variety of both Thai and Vietnamese dishes on the menu. At Chai Yo in Richmond, you’ll enjoy the welcoming en-vironment as well as the finest Thai cuisine. Authentic in taste and prepared with passion and

precision. The food will take your taste buds on a trip to Thailand with hugely popular and unique dishes like crunchy chicken with creamy coconut sauce and crunchy chicken with sweet soya sauce. It is important to Bu-nga and the Chai Yo team to support the local community and to give back to the people who support them. Their loyalty cards are one way of doing this and they regularly sup-port local teams, individuals and charities in their fundraising efforts by offering vouchers for raffles and quizzes. Bu-nga’s cell phone number is 021 142 6492 or you can email: [email protected]

It’s ‘all-go’ at Chai-Yo

Bu-nga and Nuttavut Krataitong, with their boys, Ben and new baby, Max.

While some sheds may be the final resting place for borer-ridden wood and rusting metal, there are others that are truly spectacular in their contents. Luckily it’s the latter sheds that will be opened up to the public as part of a fundraiser for the Life Education Trust. The Blokes in Sheds Tour has been running for a few years now and gives people the opportunity to peer into some classic kiwi sheds. While half of the most popular sheds from last year’s event will be returning for this year’s tour, organisers are still on the lookout for some new gems to showcase. “It’s about people being passionate about something. In the past we’ve had a guy with his model railway that he’s built in his garage, we’ve had people with collections and Nelson memorabilia, but we’ve also had people with sheds of motorcycles, cars and restorations,” says Life Education Trust chairperson, Michelle Fitzgerald. “We’ve had a really mixed bag and I guess it’s just people who have a passion, or have a collection or

something that other people might find interesting.” Already organisers have secured Higgins Park, which features a range of groups including the steam and transport museums. The tour will also feature a brewery, distillery and much more that people can explore on the day. “At the end of the day it’s win-win, because not only do they get an opportunity to show people what they’re doing and meet like-minded people, they also get an opportunity to give something back to the community,” says Michelle. Life Education Trust is a charitable organisation that provides children with life skills from a mobile classroom. The organization is invited into primary and intermediate schools to educate students on a number of topics, from food and nutrition to social relationships and bullying. The tour will be held on September 13, from 10am until 4pm. Shed owners with a passion or collection to share – or people wanting tickets or information on the tour – can email [email protected] or call 541 8910.

Broadgreen House will reopen this weekend after undergoing major maintenance work. The house has been closed since the beginning of April in order to put in place a permanent solution to the flood-damaged cellar. In the 2011 flooding, the cellar was badly damaged as the water washed away the clay walls. Remedial strengthening was started immediately after to keep the house open but, of course, the work wasn’t up to earthquake standards. The cellar has now been filled in thanks to a thick interior concrete wall and gravel fill, although the portion of the cellar that visitors view from the doorway is still largely the same, says committee member Helen Le Cren. The project caused a huge amount of disruption to the house, with pieces of their Victorian household collection having to be moved and the back part of the house sealed off. “It was a huge job to prepare it for this work, but inevitably a lot of dust and dirt has got through,” says Helen. The house is now looking forward to a thorough clean before reopening to the public on August 1. Broadgreen House will also have new opening times for the winter period until October 1. Visitors are welcome to view the house from 11am until 3pm.

Trafalgar Centre:If you read the newspaper report months ago, the Trafalgar Centre

was to open February 2016.Maybe you were looking forward to see-ing some of the great shows travelling throughout New Zealand - well, dream on, it's not a happening thing. The cost for repairs is now estimated at $13 mil-lion (and let's hope Nelson people get allocated the work). The heart of Nelson city has almost stopped beating, all we see is empty shops all over our town. Rates and water increases and soon we'll by paying for the air that we breath (as Japan does). We don't' need blue stripes on our footpaths or any more walkways. We need our city to come alive, we need an entertainment centre, so lets get things sorted and soon. M.L. Clinton.

Spending should be on core services:Cr. Pete Rainey’s wish to have the Nelson council completely take

over the ownership of the Theatre Royal and the Suter, plus build a new perform-ing arts centre, should set off alarm bells for ratepayers. The council has loaded the ratepay-ers with huge amounts of non-core li-abilities, at the expense of basic services which receive insufficient attention. Just one example is the commitment to the Brook Sanctuary, which has the po-tential for very significant repair costs for slips and also for storm damage to the fence. What the better-off people in Nelson choose to overlook is that Nelson is a

low-wage town, with many people really struggling to make ends meet and care for their children. Most of our coun-cillors are in a privileged position and overlook this situation. The council already generously funds the arts. To go any further at the ex-pense of basic services and infrastruc-ture would be a disservice to the com-munity.Dan McGuire.

Green light for Trafalgar Centre work:Good one. Saw the Russian Bal-let advertising on TV, only Nel-

son missing on the venues, even Blen-heim was on the list. Bring it on. Brenda Kenny.

Awesome. A good decision. Heather Waters.

Get on with it. Jim Mitchell.

$6M boost for Nelson's nature:Great stuff. Lets hope a lot of that will be spent on restoring

the Old Codgers Flora which will bring back all the birds that have fled the area. Sallie Rose.

The wildbird life out Upper Moutere is fantastic, tui, bellbird,

yellowheads, quail, kingfisher, many dif-ferent finches, wood pigeons, wax eyes, fantails, and love the air bombs from the plovers chasing the hawks. Sarah Allsopp.

Designer a WOW finalist after 3 goes:Good for her, they say persis-tence pays off - well done!

June Kirk.

Whakatu Dr speeds 'unsurvivable':What a headline. Media hype again. So how many deaths have

there been? None that I'm aware of, so in spite of the recorded speeds no one has died because of the speed. So what's the problem? Porschephille (via nelsonlive.co.nz).

Origin flights get a step closer:Wonderful as long as you have direct flights from Nelson to

New Plymouth!!!!!! Philippa Foes-Lamb.

Hope it goes better second time round. Daniel Rowse.

Yay, we need the competition! Lisa Foote.

Go Origin. Stay away from Nel-son Jetstar, I say! David Tuson.

Murray Teece funeral:Amazing send-off for this man that Nelson Speedway and com-

munity will miss. Just keep an eye on those rain forcasts for meeting nights, Murray, RIP. Anne Marshall-Green.

If you have the right marketing and the right agent, you have the best chance of achieving a premium price for your property. That’s why at Mike Pero Stoke we’re delighted to have a cohe-sive team of professional, full-time salespeople who understand the power of excellent market-ing. We know that a photo is not only worth a thou-sand words, it can also be worth tens of thou-sands of dollars, so we work closely with our professional photog-raphers to ensure your property is shown to its best advantage. We recognize that one of the most power-ful marketing tools is a “For Sale” sign – so at Mike Pero we’ve made our For Sale signs better – taller, stronger, they won’t fade, bend or blow away, and the comments from the community prove that they make an impact. In both print advertising and online advertising, we strive to showcase your property and make it stand out from the rest. We’re also the only real estate company in Nel-son that offers a FREE television advertisement for your property on TV1 or TV3 – thus reach-

ing up to 95,000 potential buyers nation-wide. We’re thrilled with the results, and so are our sell-ers: “We thought it was a great way to advertise our home……our home sold in two weeks. The buyer saw it on TV” – Jimmy and Lucy. “TV ad-vertising really gave great exposure to our home. The buyer ended up being someone who prob-ably would never have known our property was

for sale had our prop-erty not been adver-tised on TV.” – James and Michelle. Our mission state-ment is “to deliver ab-solute value to home buyers and sellers”. That includes regu-lar on-going training,

staying ahead of technology, and always looking at ways of “doing it better” for our clients. So if you’re thinking of making a real estate deci-sion, now or in the future, call, email, or drop in to our office at Strawbridge Square, Stoke for a chat with one of our friendly agents. We sell real estate all over the Nelson area, and we’re here to offer advice, guidance, and expertise to help you achieve your real estate goals.

to chicken out. Admirably, a handful managed

to remain in the water for an

extended period of time to milk

the moment, although it should

be noted that most of these peo-

ple were female. For the rest however, the

sequence of events once sub-

merged was akin to someone

abruptly hitting the rewind button

on a DVD.The duck race was a slightly

more drawn out affair, yet attract-

ed just as much interest as the

earlier event, although it wasn’t

long before the nature of inani-

mate object racing set in and a

good portion of the entered ducks

were soon bobbing listlessly in

the lagoon,Speaking to the Guardian after

an extremely successful day in

the sun, Riwaka School Principal

Fraser Campbell was ecstatic

with the public response to the

event.“There was just a real good

buzz around the place and a real

connection between the commu-

nity and school,” he said. Showing leadership and

immense fortitude, Mr Campbell

took to the water for the dip along

with Deputy Principal Katherine

Sefton, a feat which he says was

“better than coffee”.The Mid-Winter Festival raised

close to $9000 for the school, a

total which is believed to be up on

previous years.

HUGE SAVINGS ON ALL BUILDINGS*

Development boom for region

White water wonderMost of the 250 plus competitors at

the weekend’s Buller Festival were

from out of town, but Nelson boy

Tommy McDowell made sure he

was up there with the best – taking

out the C1 open men’s slalom. The Buller Festival is New Zealand’s

premier white water event and at-tracted a large crowd of out-of-town

competitors – including a former

Olympian from the UK.The festival started off with the

popular boater cross, an event

which sees kayakers race together

down the river. Over the course of

the weekend there was also kayak

and canoe slalom, rafter cross, SUP

race and the classic cardboard cup,

which involves making a vessel out

of cardboard and tape and taking it

down the river. The event is held every year and

showcases exactly why Murchison

is known as the “four river plains”,

with its top spots being used by

hundreds of competitors over the

weekend.Event spokesperson Sophia Mulder

says this was no doubt the biggest

weekend on the Murchison calen-dar, with plenty of money spent in

the town. “I think this year we had a lot of

people coming from further. We

had a lot of international competi-tors and not just professional ath-letes but some just here for a good

social time,” she says. “There was a good long queue eve-rywhere, the Four Square was flat

out, the petrol station was flat out.

I don’t think they’ve sold as much

bread, meat and beer as they did this

weekend.” Tommy McDowell competes in the canoe

slalom at the Buller Festival over the weekend.

A 120-site holiday park on Lower Queen

St, a $50 million lifestyle village on Wens-

ley Rd in Richmond and a 95 lot rural resi-

dential subdivision in Wakefield are the

latest developments to get the green light

as the Tasman district continues to grow.

Queen St Caravans and Motorhomes has

already started stage one of their holiday

park development which will be open in

time for next summer. Ben Nevis Holdings

had a resource consent for their 95 lot ru-

Wakefield signed off last Tuesday, while

commissioners have approved the Olive

Estate lifestyle village at 109 Wensley Rd.

A resource consent for the Lower Queen

St holiday park was granted last Septem-

ber, and co-owner Rod Yarrell says they

are presently working on installing fencing

and the underground cabling and water

pipes. He says it has been a big job with

600 metres of trenches, 3.5 kilometres of

electric cabling and 210 metres of fencing.

“We’ve already spent four months on this

stage. We are powering-up 50 sites for self-

contained motorhomes and caravans and

then we’ll get started on the ablution block

and laundry. “We have consents for 120 sites but we’ll

probably only put in around 90 so they’ll

all be a bit bigger. There’s also going to be

camping sites and 12 cabins but we won’t

be taking permanent residents.”The holiday park is being developed on the

site of Rod and his partner Linda Manera’s

says they have already been getting inquir-

Still a volunteer at 94 years oldWhen Arthritis New Zealand needed a local volunteer to help promote its cause and raise some money, the man to put his hand up was a 94 year old World War 2 veteran.Maurice Abrahams is a legend in Nelson. He still plays in the Nelson Brass Band, has served as a Freemason for more than 70 years and volunteers for Arthritis NZ after developing two forms of ar-thritis.

Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard. “But I only save the ladies,” he joked.Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “commu-nity concierge” washing windows and greeting custom-ers. He handed out orange tokens which his customers could use to vote for Arthritis NZ and help the charity receive cash from Z, through its Good in the Hood pro-motion. Maurice says he got relief from his treatment so wanted to give back, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be offered a job after his efforts. “Sue’s right into it and I just follow along, but when people respond you feel good.”

NZ Post will bring its mail from the North Island to Nelson for three to four weeks in April, as an upgrade of navigation equip-ment is carried out at Blenheim Airport,

where it usually goes. The work in Blenhe-im means the plane – a Fokker 27 Friend-ship – will arrive in Nelson each day at 6am and its noise will have a “noticeable” impact. But the 6am landing is much better than 3am, which is when NZ Post usually flys in and the time they had proposed to land in Nelson. Nelson Airport Ltd chief execu-

tive Kaye McNabb says the delay to 6am will have a big impact on NZ Post, but they weren’t willing to have such an impact on locals during the middle of the night.“If the aircraft arrived at 3am I am sure we would be inundated with calls wondering what was going on,” says Kaye. “After discussions with the operator it was agreed the aircraft would delay its ar-

rival until 6am, to minimise the effect. The changed schedule will have a significant impact on NZ Post with the inevitable flow on effect through the distribution and de-livery chain, so we’re pleased that the op-erator has been so willing to co-operate for the benefit of local residents.”The first early morning landing is expected to be on April 7.

Victim Support service coordinator Donna Smith, front left, receives some quilts from the Under-Cover Girls quilting group last week. The group made and then donated 30 quilts to Victim Sup-port. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

A Nelson quilting group, the Un-derCover Girls, has made a heart, and body, warming gesture, donat-ing 30 quilts to Victim Support. The group started about 30 years ago when founding member Joyce Jones got together with some of the students she had taught quilting at Waimea College's community edu-cation classes. Joyce says the Un-derCover Girls have donated quilts to charity in the past and this year decided to help out Victim Support, last Wednesday handing over the fi-nal instalment of 30 quilts."We initially approached the Rich-mond Volunteer Fire Brigade to see if they needed some quilts to keep people warm," Joyce says. "But they told us to approach Victim Sup-port, so we got hold of them and they said they would be ideal for their volunteers."Victim Support service coordina-tor for Tasman, Donna Smith, says they have already left three quilts at the Nelson Police Station "to give victims of crime warmth and

comfort." The remaining 27 will be issued to their 31 volunteers who will use them to keep victims warm immediately following traumatic events such as house fires and car crashes. "It's a really nice gesture," Donna says. "We often come across victims who need comforting and warmth, so these quilts are perfect."Although Joyce says the quilts are "nothing fancy" and have been made to last, Donna disagrees."I've seen them all and they are beautiful. These ladies have done a wonderful job."Joyce says the quilts were made by the group's 20 members, who come from Richmond, Nelson, Golden Bay and Murchison, using fabric donated by the family of founding member Jill Raine. The Mini Sym-posium Committee also donated some funds to help purchase fabric for the quilts.

All About Flowers is a flower shop with a difference. Manager Adrienne Matthews, formerly co-owner of Eyebright, has created a beautiful store full of fresh and silk flow-ers, NZ made toiletries, her own jewellery and art. Together with highly-trained flo-rist Tania Smith, the pair are creating floral magic and delighting customers with their exquisite arrangements. A complete florist service is offered which includes flowers for special occasions – birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, funerals and special events. A particular passion for Adrienne is bespoke funeral arrangements that reflect the life of the person being celebrated. “It is such a privilege to create something so unique”, she says. She is also delighted to be back designing the magnificent silk flower ar-rangements for which she is so well-known. Customers are welcome to phone and book an appointment for a home or business visit if they need inspiration for some new floral décor features.

At McDonalds Tahunanui, patrons stare longingly across the road at the coolest lit-tle roadside shop in town. Three years is

far too long for Tahuna to have kept The Vege Stall se-cret from the

rest of Nelson! Its gazebo doors opened way back in February 2012, and St Stephens Community Church has been selling fresh, affordable produce ever since. “Supporting local growers is an important part of what we do” says manager Matt Gray – who sources produce locally as much as pos-sible. For ‘eggxample’, Lower Mou-tere free range eggs have been quite popular lately at $5.50/dozen. As a not-for-profit venture, they “aim to serve the local community with reasonably priced, healthy food.” To see what’s in stock and hear about their weekly specials, head over to The Vege Stall Facebook page: face-book.com/TheVegeStall. Open to everyone Monday to Friday, 10am – 6pm, 61 Tahunanui Drive. www.ststephenstahunanui.co.nz

If you’re looking for a new sport combining fitness, discipline and fun, you should consider joining Aikido Nelson. Aikido is a non-competitive Japa-nese martial art that offers something for everyone, whether you’re eight or 80. Ai-kido is performed by blending with the mo-tion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on. Mark Hardcastle has been studying the martial art for the past eight years and be-

lieves the Nelson club is a place where all students will feel welcome and supported as they learn the martial art themselves. “Ai-kido delivers on so many levels for so many types of students. It’s fun. And it’s a useful, practical self-defence for all shapes and sizes.” Their training hall is open Wednes-

days and Fridays, 5pm, except Fridays dur-ing school holidays, so, if you would like to know more, the best way is to come along and join in or watch one of their classes at 63 Tahunanui Dr.

An eventful sick dAy James Smith Cross was the ‘pilot’ for Port Nelson but was ill in Feb-ruary 1842 and unable to pilot the immigrant ship Fifeshire out of the Port. Captain William Moore of Wellington was called in and at-

tempted to leave on the half tide, also misreading the currents. The Fifeshire grounded hard on Ar-row Rock and was wrecked. Arrow Rock has shared the name of the vessel since.

Head and shoulders studio portrait of Captain Hubert Satchell Harley (se-rial no. 7/2019) in military uniform. Harley was born on 16 April 1893 in Nelson, the son of the late William Charles and Edith Florence Harley, of Nelson, New Zealand. On the Auck-land War Memorial Museum Ceno-taph database his next of kin is listed as W.C. Harley (father), Waimea Road, Nelson, New Zealand. Harley was an Old Boy of Waitaki Boys' High School and Nelson College where he was recognised as a good sport at school, and a fine prefect. Before enlisting to serve during World War One Harley worked for himself as a farmer.Harley joined the 9th Reinforce-ments Canterbury Mounted Rifles, C Squadron, during World War One and embarked on 8 January 1916 from Wellington, New Zealand for Egypt. Harley served for less than one year in Egypt and France. He was killed in action whilst serving with the Canterbury Infantry Regi-ment, 2nd Battalion, 12th (Nelson) Company in the Somme, France, on 2 October 1916. He was twenty-three years old. His memorial is located in

the Caterpillar Valley (New Zealand) Memorial, Caterpillar Valley Cem-etery, Longueval, Somme, France. Harley was awarded the Military Cross (MC) for 'for conspicuous gal-lantry in action. He handled his men with great cour-age and skill under very heavy trying circumstances. Later, during an en-emy attack, he himself bombed the enemy from the open' (L.G. 25 No-vember 1916, p11550).

The Knights Templar conjures up all manner of thoughts, from secret societies, crusades, Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code and Fri-day the thirteenth. On Saturday, July 18, the Nelson chapter of the Knights Templar gave the public an extremely rare insight into what it means to be a Knight Templar today and the history behind the society. When David Marsh, prior of the Nelson chapter of the Knights Templar, was on holiday in France several years ago, he was lucky enough to come across a document outlining an original initiation ceremony from the year 1160. After photocopying the script, David brought the document home to Nelson and began a year of translating the French text into English. Normally their rituals are kept se-cret, but because this was not the actual version used in their quar-terly meetings they were able to share it with the public. David says it was also a way of backing up the talks he had given to Probus groups on the history of the Knights Templar, and was

a way of exhibiting what they do to members of the Freemason’s society who may be interested in joining. The replica ceremony was only expected to draw around 40 members of the public and Da-vid says he was “overwhelmed”

by the 105 people who turned up to witness an event that probably won’t happen again. Historically, the Knight Templar’s were a set of warrior monks who came under the auspices of the Pope. They were a law unto them-selves with freedom even from

the kings. Their task was to protect the holy land, or Jerusalem, so that Chris-tians could make their pilgrim-ages. After safeguarding the land for 80 years they started losing bits and bits, and for the next 100 years

they attempted to recapture it with around a dozen crusades. In 1307, the Knight Templar’s were disbanded by the Pope due to pressure from the King of France, who owed the Templar’s a lot of money. There are many theories as to what happened to the Templar’s after they were dissolved, some did join the Knights Hospitaller, which became Knights of St John and who we recognise today as St John Ambulance. Many people also don’t know that the Knight Templar’s intro-duced the first banking systems. Pilgrims wanting to avoid being robbed on their journey depos-ited their treasures in a Temple House and were given a docu-ment that would ensure equal value was returned to them when they produced it at any Temple House across Europe.

To become a Knight Templar, people must first be a Freemason. Masonic Knight Templar’s are no more that 250 years old. The Nelson Templar’s have around 30 members and have been estab-lished for around 80 years.

Broadgreen House has undergone some major maintenance. The house has been

closed since the end of April in order to permanently fix flood damage to current earthquake standards. The cellar has now been filled in using thick interior concrete walls and gravel, although the portion people can see from the doorway is still largely the same. The Cellar is an important part of the story of Broadgreen because this is where the clay material came from to build the cob walls. The hole created became the cellar as the house was built over the top. The home will be reopened from August 1. New winter hours will also be in effect until October 1 with the house open to visitors from 11am until 3pm. Visitors to the house can explore the huge collection of Victorian household goods and get a taste for what life would have been like in one of Nelson’s wonderful historical homes.

Best wishes to Mortimer Upholstery & Marine Covers

At the lights Salisbury Road, Richmond Ph 544 4212 www.tasmanbaymotors.co.nz

Ian Mortimer, Lynda Mortimer, Gareth Sim, Anne Bradnam, Mitch Hewson, Elena Hill and Caleb Hill are the team behind both Mortimer Upholstery and Marine Covers and Nelson Shade Solutions.

Mortimer Upholstery and Marine Covers are looking forward to making the most of their new premises on Beach Rd. The locally-owned family business is operated by Ian Mortimer and Caleb Hill, initially from Oxford St in Richmond, but increased demand for their services meant an upgrade was needed, putting them in a larger, more customer-friend-ly workshop. Caleb attributes their growth to the business’s success at building a good reputation with customers and their decision to diversify into the market of outdoor textiles. Mortimer Upholstery and Marine Covers, along with sister company Nelson Shade Solutions, are now a one stop shop for all your shade, vehicle and equip-ment covers, and upholstery requirements. The business caters to everything from auto, marine and commercial upholstery, with the team using their innovative thinking and skilled workmanship to achieve complete customer satisfaction. Mortimer’s have a huge range of experience, outfitting classic and older vehicles with new upholstery, working on a range of motorbikes, and helping customers achieve the best experience when they’re out on the water

with quality upholstery and covers for comfort and the protection of their boat. Mortimer’s manufacture canopies, upholstery, covers and accessories that are hard wearing, great look-ing and can withstand the harsh salt, ultra vio-let and marine environments. Mortimer’s have also completed large and small commercial up-holstery jobs on commercial vehicles, diggers, trucks, caravans and campers. Check out their website to see more of their services at mortim-erautoupholstery.co.nz or give them a call on 544 6352 to discuss your requirements. With snow on the mountains and a frost in the backyard, it may be hard to imagine sitting outside in the hot sun, but when summer does finally roll around, make the most of your out-door areas. Also owned by Caleb and Ian, Nelson Shade So-lutions provides exactly what its name suggests. Now sharing the same premises as Mortimer Upholstery and Marine Covers, Nelson Shade Solutions will take on any idea you have for your outdoor spaces. No project is too big or too small for the team who will see the job done from design to installation.

As well as Caleb and Ian, the team includes Gareth Sim, apprentice Mitch Hewson, and Anne Bradnam, who all bring different skills to the businesses. Ian has earned a reputation for excellent classic car interiors, while Mitch is good with repairs, truck seats and motorbike seats. Gareth is an expert with shade sails and has a valuable background in making sails for competitive yacht racing. In fact, he’s spent the last two campaigns with Oracle. Anne Bradnam is their part-time sewer, repairer and master of the many random tasks that come through their door, and Caleb fills the gaps, although his strength is in boat

canopies and covers. “We’ve been to jobs where our competitors have said “No, we can’t do the job” but we’ve got the attitude that any job is possible, you’ve just got to come up with a good solution, and to do that you have to think outside of the square,” says Caleb. Another plus to their new prem-ises is a showroom and reception area, manned by Elena Hill and Lynda Mortimer. The showroom features great samples, plus a tel-evision screen which will allow customers to see for themselves the standard to which both busi-nesses complete projects. The team are also big supporters of the wider community and this

August they will be teaming up with The Hits to see where the Nelson public think a shade so-lution is needed. Nominations can be made between Monday, July 27, and Friday, August 7, with voting open to the public on Monday, August 10. You can vote by visiting either mortimer-autoupholstery.co.nz or nelson-shadesolutions.co.nz and follow-ing the links. The winner of the shade sail will be announced on Friday, August 14. For all your shade, upholstery and cover solutions, come and see the team at Mortimer Up-holstery and Marine Covers and Nelson Shade Solutions at 44 Beach Rd, Richmond.

Mortimers Uphol-stery and Marine Covers and Nelson Shade Solutions are excited about their new workshop, which features a co-lossal work table for projects of any size.

Congratulations to Mortimer’s on their new premises

Spirited Phoenix live up to their name

Ensure you’re on the right electricity plan. If you’re using less than 8000kw

of power a year, it’s cheaper to be on a low user plan. Use tools such as

whatsmynumber.org.nz to check you’re getting the best deal.

Switching off your old second fridge could save up to $300 annually.

Use the free energy from the sun to dry clothes on an outside line, instead of in an

electric dryer. You could save around $200 annually (and it costs nothing to do this).

Run your heat pump on the most effective settings and clean the

filter regularly to ensure it runs properly.

Change to energy saving light bulbs. A change of just 8 energy

saving bulbs equates to $150 savings per year.

Check your shower usage. If the water from it fills a bucket in less than a minute you could

save around $150 annually by changing to an efficient showerhead. Keep your showers

short – in a household of three, each extra minute of shower time costs about $80 annually.

Turning off appliances left on standby saves around $125 annually.

Washing your clothes in cold water rather than warm

water could save you $65 annually.

Stop heat escaping, and draughts, with DIY

double glazing and good thick curtains.

Buy energy efficient appliances. ENERGY STAR is awarded

to the top 25% most energy efficient products.

Check if it’s OK to use. Does it have a Council building permit or consent? Was

it installed before 2000? Burners installed before 2000 in some parts of Nelson

cannot be used or replaced with another wood burner.

Use Good Wood. This means dry wood with less than 25% moisture,

left long enough after cutting to dry out before using it.

Check for Council’s list of Good Wood suppliers www.nelson.govt.nz

(search word = Good Wood).

Use the right wood at the right time. Lighter wood like Pine or Douglas Fir is

good for kindling. Dense wood like Gum will burn longer and give more heat

once the fire is burning well.

Store your wood properly – split and stack in a criss-cross pattern for

good ventilation and keep in a covered, dry place.

Burning things like wet wood, plastic, rubbish or treated wood, is

banned. It can create toxic fumes and damage your burner.

STEP ONE for a good fire: When preparing to light your fire leave a bed of

ash, put scrunched newspaper in the bottom, add small bits of kindling, add

larger pieces of dry wood as fire catches hold.

STEP TWO for a good fire: Light newspaper in several places. Have air control fully

open to keep fire burning brightly, unless reloading you should keep the door closed.

STEP THREE for a good fire: Never use the door to force wood

into burner – it could break the glass.

STEP FOUR for a good fire: Look after your burner – follow the

manufacturer’s operation and safety instructions. Clean your flu every

autumn and replace any damaged parts.

Bowen Eye Clinic provides excellence in laser eye surgery. For those with glasses or contact lenses, a chance to get rid of them would prob-ably be a welcome prospect and thanks to Dr Reece hall, it’s a possibility.Dr Hall has been travelling to Nelson for over three years now and is the only eye surgeon who makes the visit here to provide check-ups to his post-surgery patients and offers assessments for those interested in the op-eration. Last year Dr Hall established his own day surgery in a brand new, modern facility attached to Wellington’s Bowen Hospital. With increased demand for the services of Bowen Eye Clinic, Dr Hall is now making visits to Nelson every sec-ond Saturday, to offer people wearing glasses the chance to live without them.Bowen Eye Clinic’s satellite centre in Nelson is Harrington Eye Care, where locals seeking an answer to their sight problems can meet with Dr Hall for a free assessment. Potential pa-tients will need to undertake tests to determine whether the surgery will help their eyes.It doesn’t matter if patients are in their 20s

and want to throw away their glasses, or are in their 50s and over and tired of carrying their specs around in case they need to read some-thing, the surgery can help those who are long or short sighted. However, it does work best for a particular group, which is what the tests can

identify. For people that want the surgery, all the assess-ments and post check-ups are done here in Nel-son with just one flight needed to Wellington for the surgery itself. The surgery is pain free and totally blade free as the Bowen Eye Clinic is equipped with the latest FDA approved lasers. During the operation, patients are given local

anesthetic so they are awake but feel nothing in their eyes. The next available clinics in Nelson will be Sat-urday 22 August and 5 September this year so contact Bowen Eye Clinic on 0800 69 20 20, or visit their website at www.boweneye.co.nz for more details. An updated website for the clinic will also be available on July 20.

Chairperson of the Mountainbike Trails Trust Craig Mildon, IMBA Trails Specialist Jason Wells and Trustee Craig Mildon prepare to ride the trails near Branford Park. Photo: Jacob Chandler.

Nelson could become a global mountainbiking destination, after a representative from the US-based International Moun-tain Biking Association as-sessed the region's trails this week. The Mountainbike Trails Trust invited IMBA track specialist Jason Wells to Nelson to rate the region's suitability as an international mountainbiking destination. Jason has been rid-ing Nelson's trails with trust member Chris Mildon this week and so far he likes what he has seen."I've ridden about 100km of trails so far, I'm thoroughly im-pressed," Jason says. "I've rid-den trails all over the world and Nelson rates very highly."Jason says thousands of moun-tainbikers around the world use the IMBA website to find the best destinations for riding, and a gold star rating could result in an influx of international tour-ists to Nelson. He says the va-riety of trails in Nelson would be one of the biggest attractions for riders coming to the region. "We have a Disneyland punch-list for mountainbikers to make sure an area has dirt jumps, downhill tracks, cross-country trails and long distance trails,

and so far I'm very impressed. You are very, very spoiled here."Chris says the trust decided to invite Jason to Nelson because it would benefit the whole re-gion. A gold star rating from IMBA would "give us a real international presence as an at-tractive mountainbike destina-tion." "They have world-wide expo-sure with everything they pro-mote," Chris says. "We all know how good the riding is around here but this will give us an in-ternational presence."Chris says the trust paid for Jason's visit and although "it's quite an investment, it will give us regional benefits."Jason says he rated the Hack-ett highly for scenery and "for pucker-factor I enjoyed Lolli-pop". The Coppermine was also a fa-vourite with "a nice climb and amazing descent, that starts with rough, baby-head boulder and gets smoother and faster as you go down".

WEDNESDAY 24 JUNE 2015PH 03 5282088

By Tim O’Connell

While the rest of the South

Island encountered rain, snow

and pestilence it was typical

Tasman sunshine at Kaiteriteri

Beach on Sunday as hundreds

descended on the shoreline for

the Riwaka School Mid-Winter

Festival.

Bands, performances and the

standard array of hot and tasty

food made for a welcome way

to spend a winter morning, while

children were entertained by

bouncy castles, mini jeeps and

trains as well as a big dig for

A duck and dip kind of day for winter fest

prizes around the golden sands.

The main attractions of the day

were the mid-winter dip and the

duck race, both of which drew

plenty of entries from locals and

out of towners keen to support

Riwaka School.

Fairies, bumblebees and

superheroes were among the

costumes on display as the swim-

mers gathered for the former.

Jeanette Clark from Lower

Moutere was found in pre-plunge

contemplation of the icy fate that

awaited her.

“Everyone has their bucket list

of things to do, and this is one of

mine,” she said.

With the tide in for the 11am

start of the dip there was a very

short run from the shore to the

ocean, leaving the hundred or so

brave folk who entered little time

to chicken out.

Admirably, a handful managed

to remain in the water for an

extended period of time to milk

the moment, although it should

be noted that most of these peo-

ple were female.

For the rest however, the

sequence of events once sub-

merged was akin to someone

abruptly hitting the rewind button

on a DVD.

The duck race was a slightly

more drawn out affair, yet attract-

ed just as much interest as the

earlier event, although it wasn’t

long before the nature of inani-

mate object racing set in and a

good portion of the entered ducks

were soon bobbing listlessly in

the lagoon,

Speaking to the Guardian after

an extremely successful day in

the sun, Riwaka School Principal

Fraser Campbell was ecstatic

with the public response to the

event.“There was just a real good

buzz around the place and a real

connection between the commu-

nity and school,” he said.

Showing leadership and

immense fortitude, Mr Campbell

took to the water for the dip along

with Deputy Principal Katherine

Sefton, a feat which he says was

“better than coffee”.

The Mid-Winter Festival raised

close to $9000 for the school, a

total which is believed to be up on

previous years.

HUGE SAVINGS ON ALL BUILDINGS*

Development boom for region

White water wonderMost of the 250 plus competitors at

the weekend’s Buller Festival were

from out of town, but Nelson boy

Tommy McDowell made sure he

was up there with the best – taking

out the C1 open men’s slalom.

The Buller Festival is New Zealand’s

premier white water event and at-

tracted a large crowd of out-of-town

competitors – including a former

Olympian from the UK.

The festival started off with the

popular boater cross, an event

which sees kayakers race together

down the river. Over the course of

the weekend there was also kayak

and canoe slalom, rafter cross, SUP

race and the classic cardboard cup,

which involves making a vessel out

of cardboard and tape and taking it

down the river.

The event is held every year and

showcases exactly why Murchison

is known as the “four river plains”,

with its top spots being used by

hundreds of competitors over the

weekend.Event spokesperson Sophia Mulder

says this was no doubt the biggest

weekend on the Murchison calen-

dar, with plenty of money spent in

the town. “I think this year we had a lot of

people coming from further. We

had a lot of international competi-

tors and not just professional ath-

letes but some just here for a good

social time,” she says.

“There was a good long queue eve-

rywhere, the Four Square was flat

out, the petrol station was flat out.

I don’t think they’ve sold as much

bread, meat and beer as they did this

weekend.”

slalom at the Buller Festival over the weekend.

A 120-site holiday park on Lower Queen

St, a $50 million lifestyle village on Wens-

ley Rd in Richmond and a 95 lot rural resi-

dential subdivision in Wakefield are the

latest developments to get the green light

as the Tasman district continues to grow.

Queen St Caravans and Motorhomes has

already started stage one of their holiday

park development which will be open in

time for next summer. Ben Nevis Holdings

had a resource consent for their 95 lot ru-

ral residential subdivision on Totara View

Rd, Edward St and Gossey Drive North in

Wakefield signed off last Tuesday, while

commissioners have approved the Olive

Estate lifestyle village at 109 Wensley Rd.

A resource consent for the Lower Queen

St holiday park was granted last Septem-

ber, and co-owner Rod Yarrell says they

are presently working on installing fencing

and the underground cabling and water

pipes. He says it has been a big job with

600 metres of trenches, 3.5 kilometres of

electric cabling and 210 metres of fencing.

“We’ve already spent four months on this

stage. We are powering-up 50 sites for self-

contained motorhomes and caravans and

then we’ll get started on the ablution block

and laundry.

“We have consents for 120 sites but we’ll

probably only put in around 90 so they’ll

all be a bit bigger. There’s also going to be

camping sites and 12 cabins but we won’t

be taking permanent residents.”

The holiday park is being developed on the

site of Rod and his partner Linda Manera’s

business, Queen St Caravans and Mo-

torhomes at 442 Lower Queen St and Rod

says they have already been getting inquir-

ies from prospective customers.

Still a volunteer at 94 years oldWhen Arthritis New Zealand needed a local volunteer

to help promote its cause and raise some money, the

man to put his hand up was a 94 year old World

War 2 veteran.Maurice Abrahams is a legend in Nelson. He still

plays in the Nelson Brass Band, has served as a

Freemason for more than 70 years and volunteers

for Arthritis NZ after developing two forms of ar-

thritis.Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active

life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu

swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard.

“But I only save the ladies,” he joked.

Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol

station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “commu-

nity concierge” washing windows and greeting custom-

ers. He handed out orange tokens which his customers

could use to vote for Arthritis NZ and help the charity

receive cash from Z, through its Good in the Hood pro-

motion. Maurice says he got relief from his treatment so

wanted to give back, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be offered

a job after his efforts. “Sue’s right into it and I just follow

along, but when people respond you feel good.”

Noisy plane’s 6am landingA noisy New Zealand Post aeroplane is ex-

pected to land in Nelson at 6am every day

for at least three weeks, which could wake

people from their sleep, admits Nelson

Airport Ltd.NZ Post will bring its mail from the North

Island to Nelson for three to four weeks in

April, as an upgrade of navigation equip-

ment is carried out at Blenheim Airport,

where it usually goes. The work in Blenhe-

im means the plane – a Fokker 27 Friend-

ship – will arrive in Nelson each day at

6am and its noise will have a “noticeable”

impact. But the 6am landing is much better than

3am, which is when NZ Post usually flys

in and the time they had proposed to land

in Nelson. Nelson Airport Ltd chief execu-

tive Kaye McNabb says the delay to 6am

will have a big impact on NZ Post, but they

weren’t willing to have such an impact on

locals during the middle of the night.

“If the aircraft arrived at 3am I am sure we

would be inundated with calls wondering

what was going on,” says Kaye.

“After discussions with the operator it

was agreed the aircraft would delay its ar-

rival until 6am, to minimise the effect. The

changed schedule will have a significant

impact on NZ Post with the inevitable flow

on effect through the distribution and de-

livery chain, so we’re pleased that the op-

erator has been so willing to co-operate for

the benefit of local residents.”

The first early morning landing is expected

to be on April 7.

Nelson College still has a mathematical chance of making the semifinals, after a big 59-5 win against Waimea College in their UC Championships secondary schools rugby game at Waimea College on Saturday.Nelson College are presently in fifth place in the championships, and with two games remaining needed a bonus point win to stay within striking distance of fourth-placed St Bedes. And they did just that, scoring the bonus point try in the 24th minute and lead 31-0 at halftime before completing a nine-try demolition of Waimea College.Nelson dominated all aspects of play with their big forwards, led by No8 Brad Pool and lock Trent Knapp, laying the perfect foundation for their speedy backs to at-tack. Nelson prop Lachie Doyle completing the scoring with their ninth five minutes from the end.

Although Waimea was outclassed, they never stopped trying and enjoyed a good period of play leading up to their only try, to winger Mitch Amberger. Nelson College should secure another bonus point win when they play Rangiora in Nelson this Saturday but faces champi-onship leader Christchurch Boys' High in the final round. Nelson is five points behind fourth-placed St Bedes which plays Lincoln High and Christ's College in their final two games.Waimea College plays Timaru Boys High in Timaru this Saturday and Rangiora in their final game at Waimea College the following Saturday. Nelson College 59 (Leicester Faingaanuku 2, Brad Pool, Matt Soper, Sosefo Vaka, Willy Havili, Jakob Dabinett, Jack Grooby, Lachie Doyle tries, Soper 7 conversions) Waimea College 5 (Mitch Amberger try) Half time: 31-0.

CASH FOR VICTORY BOXING: Wayne Densem of Business Breakfast Club hands over a cheque for $2000 to Victory Boxing Charitable Trust pro-gramme manager Paul Hampton, while Bowater Hyundai CEO Chris Bo-water watches on.The money was raised from a recent breakfast where rally star Hayden Paddon spoke. Hayden was in town thanks to Bo-water Hyundai and a per-centage of ticket sales and money from an auction at the breakfast were donated to Victory Boxing. The transfer indoors to Saxton Stadium for the Nelson Netball Age Group Tournament on Sunday proved to be a wise de-cision, given the fact that rain was forecast. It would have been a popular decision as some of the play-ers would not usually have the luxury of playing indoors. Nelson was represented by Russell Curtains Under 17 and Development, Under 15 and Development and Richmond Mall Under 13 and Develop-ment. In a new initiative this year, the Netball Mainland Under 15 Championship has been established which aims to develop the Zone’s young talented players, coaches and umpires. The tournament was run “alongside” the Age Group Tournament. The weekend was the first Pool Play round, with another round next week in Christchurch before finishing with the Finals at Selwyn Net-ball Centre on 23 August.I “stated” the Nelson Under 15 encounter against Mid Can-terbury and from the onset it would have been obvious they were well and truly a cut above their opposition. Nelson looked sharp in their warm up

and totally focused, dropped balls were minimal and coach Sarah Rankin looked to have the girls “humming”.While the bulk of the team is from Nelson College for Girls, the team has gelled nicely.Nelson dominated all facets of play – having three times the number of attempts at goal (57 as opposed to 19). The straight lines and squares was nothing short of impressive as they had the confidence to let the ball go and know that one of their team mates would be mov-ing into the space to receive it. Nelson snatched turnover after turnover, and their speed in transition was astonishing, the ball carrier looked straight into shooter Lauren Chaney who

presented well to take stress-free ball. Goal attack Bailee Tava shouldered a hefty load through court and was content to act as a third feeder to Lau-ren.Mid Canterbury’s offensive third was severely punished by the skill of Jaime Archer and Maddi Springer. Jaime read play exceedingly well to take clean, well-timed intercepts. in the comprehensive 45–11 win. After conceding to Jenn-ian Buller by a solitary goal at the recent Top of the South in Blenheim, Nelson turned the tables to record a 30-28 win.The Anderson Cup has been added to the trophy cabinet after a convincing 31–14 win over Marlborough Under 15A.
