Failing heart stops rugby careerTrael Joass can’t feel his heart beating. Severe cramp fills his chest. He undoes his headgear and drops to the ground. He tries to breathe slowly. He rubs a pulse on his neck, a way to soothe the pain. He feels helpless. Then, “tick”, it’s over. He gets back up and plays the rest of the rugby game like it had never happened. The 21 year old Wanderers sec-ond-five has had the same heart problem for the past three years, and up until two weeks ago it was manageable, and he could still bust through tackles, smash op-position attackers and run with speed, even after experiencing another “episode”.But before the club rugby final

against Waimea Old Boys, Trael’s cardiologist told him five words he never wanted to hear. “No more sport for you”.“I said ‘you’ve got to be kidding me, right?’ I just broke down when I heard that,” Trael ex-plains. “I just cried for ages. It’s hard enough to be told I’m not going to be able to trial for the Makos because this is the closest I’ve ever gotten, but then it’s an-other thing not being able to play for my club team in a final. That was the most upsetting thing for me.”Trael has never been closer to a spot in the Tasman Makos squad, and was last week named in their “emerging players squad” which was effectively a trial team. It’s likely they will pick another mid-

fielder for the ITM Cup squad, and it could have been him. But Trael is now sidelined in-definitely. He can’t play rugby, he can’t hit the gym, he can’t run, and he can’t do anything that will over-exert his body — not until he gets surgery on his heart. “It could kill me. Death,” he simply answers when asked what would happen if he continues to play the sport he loves, the sport he grew up playing, and the sport he hoped would be his job this year. Trael has supraventricular tachy-cardia, or “SVT” as he knows it as. It means he has abnormally fast heart rhythm, and it races up

to 300 beats per minute. He will need an operation before being free to take the rugby field again. “It just goes fast. I’ve got more electric pulses than I’m meant to. I was told just to keep playing and if I faint it’d be a sign to stop, but I never fainted.”But it’s still a big unknown as to when he will get that operation. Trael has a friend — another rug-by player — who had a similar condition and waited three years before eventually going private. He is meeting with his GP this week, and hopes to have a clearer idea by the end of it. If the wait is too long, he’s considering going private too.Out of action from sport until then, Trael says he will now focus on his building apprenticeship.

TUESDAY 29 July 2014NelsonLocally Owned and Operated Weekly

It’s been an exciting few days at the Commonwealth Games for Nelson’s top sporting stars – and equally so for their fami-lies.On Monday morning lawn bowler Jo Edwards won Nel-son’s first gold medal of the games with a thrilling win over the defending Common-wealth Games champion from England. Watching on was her “immensely proud” coach and husband Dave Edwards.Jo later said she’d worked hard-er before these games than any other. “It’s a very, very proud moment. A hell of a lot of hard work has gone into this campaign. I’ve probably worked harder than for any other,” she told the New Zealand Herald.Another thrilled Nel-sonian was Tim Bren-ton as he watched his daughter Amy Mcil-roy win bronze in the women’s triples, alongside fel-low Nelsonian Val Smith.Tim and his wife Raewyn were in the stands cheering and he

told Nelson Weekly it was a great moment. “A dream come true really. The walk into the stadium at the opening was in-

credible she said. She truly proudly repre-sents New Zealand.”Amy’s husband Shan-non Mcilroy is also competing in the lawn bowls. His triples team were knocked out in the quarter finals, but he still has the singles to come. “It’s wonder-ful to have one, let

alone both of them [competing in Glasgow]. Shan is definitely very much part of the fam-ily – he lived with us for four

or five years before they were married.”There are 11 Nelson athletes at the games and so far the medal tally for them is three. One of each colour after Bryce Heem’s All Black sevens side lost the gold medal match against South Africa, earning them a silver medal.Tim says the atmosphere and hospitality at the games is fantastic. “We’ve been so im-pressed by the hospitality of the helpful and friendly local Scot-tish residents.”Amy, Val and Jo are all in ac-tion again this week, as is Blacksticks hockey player An-ita Punt.

Housing trust wants 250 rentalsA trust set up to help locals into affordable housing is aiming to have 250 homes under its man-agement in the next few years. The Nelson Tasman Housing Trust celebrated its tenth birth-day this month. It owns 32 homes which it then rents out to ten-ants at around 80 per cent of the full market value, making liv-ing cheaper for many families. But director Keith Preston says the need is far from met and it’s currently building another seven homes which will be finished by next year. “There are a lot of people moving to Nelson, finding a job, but then

can’t afford a house. We also have a lot of refugees in Nelson and a lot of older people who need to downsize. People also want to live closer to town.”The need for cheaper housing in the region was highlighted by the New Zealand Herald last week – citing a report in the Housing Finance International journal – which reported that house prices, compared to income, in Nelson and Tasman are the highest in the country, along with Auckland.

Keith says the trust was set up in 2004 in response to a social well-being report that said housing af-fordability was a significant issue and that it was the cause of a lot of social problems in Nelson. He says, as the trust grows its portfolio it will mean a stronger economy for the region and healthier peo-ple. “All our homes are warm, dry and energy efficient and, by providing cheaper homes, it will mean people will be able to afford to live here.”The trust is hoping a fair chunk

of its new homes will come from the government’s stock of state houses, which it would then look to either renovate or knock-over

to build newer homes. That model has already started in Kawai St South, where a former state house that was destroyed by fire was given to the trust. The house was cleared off the site and the trust is now building three new homes in its

spot. Keith says building more homes on smaller sections is the way forward.“We’re trying to increase the den-

sity of housing in Nelson, because we’re moving away from a quarter acre section. We’re putting hous-es pretty close together and so we want a mix between elderly and younger families so we make sure people fit in with the community already there, because we’re offer-ing them a place for life, if they continue to pay rent.”Keith says the trust has been able to grow so much because it gen-erally is granted 50 per cent of the housing cost by the government and Nelson City Council waives building levy fees. He says that the rest of the money is borrowed from banks.

Pipers celebrate 90 years

Business owners say the council’s attempt to “revitalise” Bridge St is worthy, they just hope they’ll be consulted with before another $200,000 is spent. This month, Nelson City Council finished its Bridge St project which cost $172,500 plus GST, slightly less than its $200,000 budget. For their money, ratepayers got new lighting, planter boxes, seating and blue lines painted on the footpath outside the city’s nightclubs.During this year’s annual plan dis-cussions, the council agreed to put aside $200,000 for stage 2 of the project. The blue lines have been the sub-ject of much debate since they were painted on and Shark Club owner Steve Shepperd says he doesn’t see the point of them, but he’s happy with the rest of the upgrades. “The council started off consulting re-ally well with us, but that bears no

resemblance to what we ended up with. I’m trying to be positive but I don’t know what they were trying to do with the blue lines.”He says none of the business own-ers on the street that he’s spoken to knew anything about the blue lines until they were being painted on.Steve says he’s happy more money has been put aside but he’d like to hear more from the council before work begins.Decisions around stage 2 of the Bridge St Upgrade is still a while away, as councillors haven’t even began discussing them yet.

The City of Nelson Highland Pipe Band celebrated its ninetieth anniversary with a Ceilidh style concert that featured a feast of all things Scottish; including plenty of

Haggis and Whisky. From traditional full-band performances to Celtic singing, the crowd at the Theatre Royal were treated to piping solos and duets, drum salutes,

traditional tunes such as Scotland the Brave and new tunes like The Red

Fox. The band was formed in 1924, and this year celebrates its strong and long-standing presence in the Nelson

community with a current size of around 15 drummers and pipers. The

City of Nelson Highland Pipe Band also regularly competes and are often

seen performing at community events too.Bridge St after its $200,000 up-grade earlier this month.

One ring for our regionNelson will have its own ring after Jens Hansen decided to launch a design competition for the city’s gigatown cause. For Halfdan Hansen, owner and creative director of Jens Hansen, crafting a Nelson Ring would create a new legacy for the Nelson region, giving it a unique identity for the region’s

large numbers of international and national visitors. Halfdan says as Nelson is the country’s most creative region, so it fits for it to have its own ring.Designers are asked to design a ring that they feel best encompasses the Nelson region; its spirit, beauty, geography, creativeness, or

history. The winner will get to sit with the in-house jewellers at Jens Hansen to be involved in the ring-making process. They will also become the owners of the first-ever Nelson Ring to be made. To learn more and enter the contest, visit facebook.com/theringmaker.

New smart power meters, which will be installed in up to 40,000 properties around Nelson and Tasman over the next two years at a cost of $15-20 million, will re-duce power outages and not result in an increase in electricity charges. Network Tasman, which owns and oper-ates the electricity distribution network in the Nelson-Tasman region, excluding Nel-son City, will be spending $15-20 million to replace existing power meters with the new smart meters starting in September. Advanced metering development manager Andrew Stanton says the smart meters will automatically relay electricity useage to

power companies via radio signal and can provide consumers with important infor-mation about their daily and hourly power consumption.Andrew says smart meters will also mean customers will not be required to provide keys to access houses to read internal me-ters, while power accounts will be based upon actual consumption, not estimates. In the future, customers may also be able to set alarms to alert them if their power usage is too high and set energy-efficient appliances to interact with the advanced meters to manage electricity costs. However, Andrew says the big advantage

will be that Network Tasman will receive information on power outages or potential problems with the network, allowing it to

quickly repair, or even preempt, faults. The meters will also automatically cutout when there is a power overload, reducing the average power outage time due to blown fuses from 99 minutes to two minutes. “We will know immediately when there is an outage rather than relying on a cus-tomer to phone us with a problem. We’ll also be able to identify abnormal voltages that may be a precursor to a failure and fix the faults before they happen.” Andrew says they haven’t yet finalised the programme for the rollout of the new me-ters although property owners will be noti-fied before the meters are installed.

It’s not a lot of fun getting out of bed early in the morning especially in winter but a dedicated group of parents and grandparents are happily doing it three times a week just to make life easier for some of the Nelson’s up-and-coming swim stars. The Tasman Swim Club coach Andy Adair, was concerned that members of the club’s age group squad were struggling to get ready for school in time after their morning training sessions. The squad trains five mornings a week for two hours starting at 5.15 leaving swimmers only about 40 minutes to eat breakfast and get to school.Andy suggested they could start a breakfast club to provide a poolside breakfast for the swimmers and a group of parents and grandparents are taking up the challenge. The breakfast club was formed about a year ago and parent Lisa Dunn says it is proving extremely popular.“It’s really convenient for the

swimmers because it means they don’t have to rush home or eat breakfast on the way to school.”Lisa says they provide a variety of cereals, toast, yoghurt and drinks and a special cooked breakfast on Fridays. The breakfast club is run by parents and extended family members including George McKenzie, Garry and Jenny Smith, Delys Harwood, Mandy Bishop and Jodi McKenzie and is generously sponsored by Stoke New World. George, who is the grandfather of Sam McKenzie, says he doesn’t mind getting up

at 5.45am to help out because “it gets me going”. Swimmer Samantha Smith, 14, who goes to Garin College, says the poolside breakfasts are not only a big time-saver, they are also “a lot more social” than quickly eating something on the way to school. Samantha says the breakfast club also means Friday morning training sessions are one of the highlights of the week. “We get waffles and pancakes and cinnamon scrolls so when you are in the middle of a hard set on Friday you always think about the breakfasts.”

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT THE LAW GOVERNING THE SAFETY OF TREES NEAR POWER LINES – Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003

Trees close to power lines are a safety hazard. On 1st July 2005 the Tree Regulations came into effect to protect the security of the supply of electricity and for the safety of the public. There is the potential for injury or even death by electrocution if you touch a tree which is touching a power line. Children in particular like to climb trees and when these trees are close to power lines, there is always the risk of serious injury or even death. Trees can cause power cuts especially in strong winds, rain and snow. Your power supply may be disrupted when trees fall or branches break, damaging power lines, poles or other structures. In dry conditions serious fires can be caused.

The Tree Regulations spell out the responsibilities for electricity lines companies and tree owners in making sure that trees are kept safely trimmed away from the lines. They define two zones around power lines as shown in the diagram below.

Growth Limit Zone – no part of a tree or other vegetation should be inside this zone. Lines companies are required to issue Cut or Trim Notices to owners when their trees are within the Growth Limit Zone.

Notice Zone – if your trees reach this zone you may receive a Hazard Notice warning that the trees must not enter the Growth Limit Zone.

Nelson Electricity carries out routine surveys on its network and issues Cut or Trim Notices to owners of trees that have grown intothe Growth Limit Zone. If you receive a Tree Cut or Trim Notice it is important that you read the information sent to you and respond accordingly.

Tree owners are required to respond to Notices by either:● Arranging for trees to be trimmed at their cost by a professional lines-qualified arborist to a clearance outside the Notice Zone; or● Informing the lines company that they have no interest in the trees. The lines company may then fell the trees (in some instances

they may choose to trim).

If trees on your property have not previously been trimmed by the Nelson Electricity you may be eligible for the first trim free of charge. In exceptional circumstances, a dispensation from the regulatory clearances may be applied for.

If tree owners do not comply with the Regulations and fail to have their trees cut or trimmed they can be fined up to $10,000 along with $500 per day for ongoing offences. Tree owners may also be liable for the cost of outages and repair of power lines if damage has been caused by their trees.

Cutting or trimming trees near power lines is an extremely hazardous activity. If branches or people come into contact with a live line while the tree is being cut a potentially fatal electric shock may result. If live lines are brought down by cutting trees, then serious safety hazards to other people and property in the vicinity may occur. Trimming or felling trees in close proximity to power lines must only be carried out by professional arborists who have had specific training and are qualified to work near power lines.

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT THE LAW GOVERNING THE SAFETY OF TREES NEAR POWER LINES – Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003

This information is brought to you by Nelson Electricity who owns and operates the electricity distribution network in

Nelson City and supplying approximately 9,200 consumers in what is mainly an urban area. Nelson Electricity carries out routine surveys on its network and issues Cut or Trim Notices to owners of trees that have grown into the Growth Limit Zone. If you receive a Tree Cut or Trim Notice it is important that you read the information sent to you and respond accordingly. Tree owners are required to respond to Notices by either: Arranging for trees to be trimmed at their cost by a

professional lines-qualified arborist to a clearance outside the Notice Zone; or

Informing the lines company that they have no interest in the trees. The lines company may then fell the trees (in some instances they may choose to trim).

School makes use of great outdoors for fundraiser

Gearing up for the Valley to View is Xanthe Robb, 8, left, Kirsten McGhie and Josh Churchill, 6. Photo: Andrew Board.

For the first time ever, Nelson families will get the chance to explore stunning Cable and Delaware Bay farmland by mountain bike or on foot, thanks to a unique Hira School fundraiser that’s tipped to become an annual event, and aims to raise much needed funds for new classroom technology. The Hira School “Valley to View” Adventure Day will see Hira School team up with Happy Valley Adventures in Cable Bay, along with neighbouring farmland owned by local iwi, who have offered to open up their land for the event. Happy Valley Adventure’s owner Keith An-derson, says in the history of their landown-ership they’ve never done something like this. The fundraising team, spearheaded by parent Kirsten McGhie, decided to go for something completely different in the way of a school fundraiser. Kirsten says the event will be about offering something for everyone. “We have a one hour loop ride round the Happy

Valley river flats, suitable for even young kids on bikes, through to some challenging terrain for experienced mountain bikers, that’ll take them on a 17 kilometre climb to magnificent views over Cable and Delaware Bay, before descending onto Delaware Bay farmland, with an estimated ride time of around 2 to 3 hours. Hira School principal Tonnie Uiterwijk says the country school continues to thrive but fundraising is crucial to its success. “The Ministry of Education’s interpretation of Hira being a decile 10 school means less govern-ment funding. This means we have to work hard at raising extra money to continue up-grading classroom technology.”“Valley to View” is on Sunday, August 3 with wet weather postponement date of Sunday 10. The event runs from 10am until 4pm, though bikers have to register between 10 and midday, with the last riders setting off at 1pm. Full details at www.hira.school.nz.

Football Club's 50th: Richmond Athletic Foot-ball Club, Richmond’s largest sports club, is get-ting close to celebrating its 50th anniversary. So far, they have just under 100 people coming to celebrate the milestone, but there is still plenty more room so anyone interested in attending the event are welcome to call club president Stu Reid on 027 471 4619.

Energy Centre closed: The Founders Park En-ergy Centre only needs two months' worth of work to strengthen it against an earthquake, but that is still too long for the upcoming Nel-son Hospitality Awards. Organisers are expect-ing around 350 people to attend the event and fortunately they have found a new venue in the Rutherford Hotel.

Sugary drinks: After Nelson mayor Rachel Reese made the announcement that sugary drinks would be banned from all of the coun-cil’s events and venues, Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne has admitted he is now weighing up the idea for the Tasman area. The ban is meant to be a step towards eliminating child-hood obesity and dental disease within the community.

More than 350 cars have been broken into this year, almost half of which were unlocked.Police say they’ve been pushing the message for Nelsonians to lock their cars over the past few years, but it hasn’t had much of an impact. For the six months from January 1 to June 30, 367 offences have

been reported to police involving the theft of property from motor vehicles.Of these, 44 per cent, or 161 offences, have involved thefts from vehicles that were unlocked or insecure.Sergeant Craig Barker, of Nelson, says the message is simple.“Lock it or lose it is a very simple

message that the police have been pushing for a number of years, yet the message doesn’t seem to be getting through in Nelson,” he says.Craig says police were aware that some people were choosing to leave vehicles unlocked to avoid damage being done by someone trying to break in.

“The reality is that thieves would prefer to go for the easy option, which is an unlocked car. They’re also much less likely to target your car if there are no valuables in sight and it’s difficult to get in,” he says. The majority of offences have been committed in the early evening and overnight.

Even cars parked up the owner’s driveways have been targeted by the thieves. The most commonly stolen items include wallets, purses, money, cell phones, and electronics.“The solution is simple -- lock your car. Even when it’s parked at home, and don’t leave valuables in your car.”

Supporting neighbourhoods

New Neighbourhood Support coordinator Karen Clark. Photo: Andrew Board.

Three weeks into her new job Karen Clark already has lofty goals. The new coordinator for Neighbourhood Support would like to see every street in Nelson with a Neighbourhood Support group. At the moment around 400 of Nelson’s 700 streets have neighbourhood support groups and she says they work so well she’d like to see every street benefit.“It’s a way to get to know your neighbours and the reassurance that if you are home alone and you hear a noise, you have people’s phone numbers and you can call them.”Karen says she’s also keen to develop a bigger online presence for Neighbourhood Support and she’s really enjoyed her first few weeks.“There’s a lot of people contact, which I’m really enjoying. The board have some definite goals which means it will be a good challenge as well.”Karen works from the Stoke Police Station. If you’d like to find out more about starting a group, email her at [email protected]

Corkill heads to hospitalA week after a hugely successful quiz night, Mike Corkill was admitted to Nelson Hospital and will remain there for a week. The Nelson father of six is trying to raise $100,000 for life-saving surgery to replace his lungs. Mike was born with a condition that makes his lungs work harder than normal. He will die if he doesn’t receive the transplant.Last Friday, just under $5000 was raised from a quiz night, bringing his total to $30,000.

But time is running out. Mike is likely to be on oxygen full time when he is released from hospital. He says doctors told him he was close to heart failure and he had an extra 20 kilograms of fluid on him. “I’m feeling a lot better than on Friday. Every time I coughed I was almost passing out. But I’m still positive.”To donate to Mike’s fundraising account visit Kiwibank, 38-9006-0093683-00.

People in the African town of Torwood will no longer have to walk for hours just to get clean water at the crack of dawn – and it’s all thanks to the support of a Nelson charity.A small team of volunteers from Water for Prosperity – who organise the annual Walk for Water event at Rabbit Island – returned to Torwood, Zimbabwe in June to install a fur-ther eight ground water-bores. Six of those were funded by the Emirates Airline Founda-tion and two were funded thanks to the gener-osity of Nelson sponsors and donors.Last year, volunteers from Water for Prosper-ity visited the town and installed three ground water-bores, two in schools and one on coun-cil land. But to reduce long queues at those bores, and to increase accessibility, Gideon Matorino and his wife Sibusisiwe Matorino, David Barnes, Philip Catchpole and Paul Sin-clair returned last month, focusing on new water-bores spread across the town and near buildings constructed in the 60s with no run-ning water.“There was a ratio of 35,000 people to one bore, so we thought we’d go do some more in the community to reduce the long queues and the walking distances,” says Gideon. “The installation of the eight bores and the valu-able source of water have reached a far greater number of people than we thought, helping well over 20,000 children and adults.”Gideon says the current economic situation has left the town broken. “The infrastructure is in tatters and there is no water, no power and no council services. It was heartbreaking to spend time in this town and see the wide-spread poverty. The people are hard workers who lost any money they had when the cur-rency crashed.”But despite their situation, Gideon says the residents are remarkable and remain positive, and their reception was “amazing.” Water for Prosperity is planning to return to Torwood in 2015 to install more water-bores, and to construct basic shower and toilet fa-cilities in a residential area which houses 1000 people. “That would be very helpful because at the moment they’re travelling two kilometres to the nearby bush, and it’s a real mission.”

Philip Catchpole of Water for Prosperity pumps a ground water-bore installed in Tor-wood during the charity’s visit last month.

Living with Tourette'sEntries are rolling in for the Car Company Char-ity Drive, with dozens already dropped off before the deadline on August 22. Each week until the deadline, Nelson Weekly and the Breeze radio station will be speaking with an entrant about what the $10,000 would do for their group. This week we speak with the members of the Tourette's Association of New Zealand.

Living with Tourette’s means living without control of your own body. That’s tough enough, but when another adult made fun of Nelson woman Paula Panckhurst by imitating her at a restaurant she admits it was “humiliating”.Paula and Renee Harvey are two Nelsonians who live with Tourette’s – a neurological disor-der that can cause physical and vocal “tics”. They only met each other recently after connecting on Facebook via the national Tourette’s Association page. Both say it was the first time they’ve met another person with Tourette’s. They’re hop-ing to raise money so they can attend “Camp Twitch” in Hanmer in October. People from all over New Zealand will attend the camp, and Paula says she’s excited to meet other people, es-pecially children and help them.“When I was a kid Tourette’s wasn’t really heard of, so my family just thought I had really strange habits. I was just a really freaky kid really, do-ing strange things. That was hard and it wasn’t until I was an adult that I had a diagnosis. It was amazing to know I wasn’t a freak, I had some-thing that I couldn’t control.”Paula has a milder form of Tourette’s and can

suppress her tics at work by using facial expres-sions and humming. But it does take a toll and when she gets home she says she turns into the “energizer bunny”.For Renee, Tourette’s started when she was just 10. She was diagnosed with ADHD and was given Ritalin as a way to control it. Straight after the first pill she started “doing weird things”.“I was doing all these crazy things and it just got worse and worse.”The fact that it was kick-started by the Ritalin makes Renee extremely angry. At 21, Renee now has a three year old son and her tics range from swearing and spitting to physical tics where her face and arms twitch. Fighting back the tears, Renee says the condi-tion is a lonely one and she just wants people to understand. “You do get people looking and their eyes are huge and they look at me thinking I’m a weirdo. It’s hard, sometimes I worry that I’m going to hurt my son because of my tics.”It’s also a barrier for their personal relation-ships. Paula says it can be embarrassing being out in public. “It’s about them being able to cope with it re-ally. You’re out with their friends or your friends and you’re sitting there blinking and twitching or spitting all over your partner.”The pair say they suspect there are a lot more Nelsonians living with Tourette’s and they’d like to meet more people with it. Camp Twitch is the first opportunity people with Tourette’s will have to meet in one place and both are busy fun-draising to get there.

Bridge St stripes:Congrats on the $200,000 blue stripes on Bridge St. Now when

punters urinate in the shop doors it follows the strips to the gutter. Genius! Minyon (via text).

Tadmor church:The Tadmor Church Society wants to keep its redundant century-old

St James' church for weddings and funerals (22 July). However, the way to save any church from redundancy is for the living to participate regularly in Sunday worship when available. Ren Kempthorne.

Light Festival:Brian Riley, the chair of the trust for Light Nelson, would be pleased

to hear from those with great suggestions. The neon arrows idea is one. All those who support this event let’s get behind it with some voluntary time. Artists are people too and hold down jobs to afford to do what they love - to create, let’s get behind them as they make Nelson a much more fun and interesting place to live and don’t forget to put your money where your mouth is. (In the donation boxes at both gateways). Yvonne Denise.

1080:The Conservation Minister has confirmed that the largest drop

ever of 1080 is getting underway over 1,000,000 hectares. As usual, he delights in scare tactics by quoting numbers in zillions with little or no scientific basis for such claims. This is in the belief that he can fool most of the

people, most of the time. He makes no reference to the killing of many species, invertebrates, birds, including natives and innocent mammals all of which die a death that any self respecting country would not permit. This method has been used for at least 50 years in New Zealand. It has failed and will continue to fail until a growing global horror is brought to bear on such indefensible killing across this country. It is a chilling fact that New Zealand uses over 90 per cent of the annual world production of 1080. Guess who owns the manufacturing capacity for this obscenity? “Clean Green”-- Yeah Right! Douglas Carter, Nelson.

Rocks Rd:Some Councillors can’t wait to spend $14 million of our money

on a cycleway/walkway proposal for Rocks Rd. Wait until the Southern Link is built and this will become a local road. Wide enough for parking, traffic and a 3 metre walkway. Introduce a load limit and a speed limit. Use the $10 million of R funds to fix dangerous intersections with serious accident records on SH1. Cynthia McConville.

Fix the damn slips along there first. Elizabeth DeHar.

I like the more expensive option, simply because it separates the

cyclists from the traffic with more than a painted line on the road. Dez Tinee.

I think you have to look at the bigger picture. There is currently a

cycle way/walkway on the railway reserve that takes people along from Richmond through Stoke and onto Nelson, and does so safely. This is now partly the proposed route that Nick Smith is pushing for a new road to take traffic in and out of Nelson. Meaning the Rocks Rd cycle route is “making way” for changes to the current railway reserve that many Nelsonian’s don’t want to see become a main highway. If the Rocks road cycle way does go ahead, where do cyclists start and stop their journey in the same safety as they currently have with the current cycleway. Glen James Tomlinson.

Yes. Better spending money on this than

random painted blue lines. Nardia Eden.

Bicycle Nelson Bays has always advocated for

better infrastructure to help people cycle and walk safely and to encourage more people towards active transport. We aim to make Nelson a healthier, more livable city and hopefully this project is a step towards that. We will be looking closely at the material provided by council on this project and we will post our views on the options once we’ve considered the designs and their implications. We welcome your ideas and opinions throughout this process. John-Paul Pochin.

Sugary drinks banned by NCC:Are there any council premises that aren’t shut down as they are

earthquake risks? Jessica D’Evereux.

Can understand why everybody is leaving Nelson and moving to

Tasman. Stupid call, next you won’t be able to eat or breath in there. Michael Dufeu.

I think its great! Dean Campbell.

It’s not every day you win a free trip to Fiji, so you can imagine how excited Annetta Hodg-es and her best friend Maureen Sharland are feeling right now as they plan which swim suit to take and which pair of sandals while the rest of us settle in for a few more frosts. Shuttleworth Painters & Decora-tors are to thank for the winter holiday after their promo-tion which saw any-one who accepted a quote done between May 5 and July 11 go in the draw to win a luxury trip for two to Fiji. Waiting for them on arrival would be five nights at the five star Sofi-tel Fiji Resort and Spa, including full cooked breakfasts and transfers. Thanks to the very helpful team at Harvey World Travel Richmond, the two friends are booked and ready to go and are very grateful for the op-portunity. “We’re very excited. I have been before but Maureen hasn’t been to Fiji before. Its 38 years since I was there. The brochures tell us all sorts of things but they’re more for younger people so we’ll just have to wait till

we get there to find out what we’ll be doing,” says Annetta. Annetta and Maureen have been friends for 50 years; ever since they met nursing in the Nelson hospital. Maureen says she feels very

honoured that she was invited along and Annetta says Maureen was her first choice as a trav-elling companion. “I couldn’t take any of my family because I thought it would be unfair to take one of them and not the other. I have a lot of family but you can’t take them all.” Annetta was ex-tremely surprised she won the trip at all considering she only put her quote in

a week before it was due to be drawn. “I rang Maureen and told her I’d take her if I won it and then I had to ring her back and tell her ‘get out your bikini’ we’re going.” Annetta will also be looking forward to seeing her new bedroom and living room once Shuttle-worth Painters & Decorators have given it a new lick of paint.

You’ve nominated who you think does it best, now it’s time to vote. The 2014 New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards are the most prestigious local awards the industry has and recognises the best in the hospitality business. This year, hundreds of businesses and workers were nominated by people from Golden Bay to Murchison to Rai Valley, and everywhere in between. There was an overwhelming response so the finalists were narrowed down to the top in each category, based on the number of nominated votes. The awards are split into two categories – industry awards, which are judged by experts, and the people’s choice awards, voted and judged by you. So it’s important you have your say! Simply fill in who you want to win, cut out the form and drop it off to either newspaper office in Selwyn Pl, Nelson or Salisbury Rd, Richmond. Or send

Pauline Shoemack has a depth of legal knowledge and experience, having practised as a lawyer since 1983. Pauline says she enjoys the satisfaction and challenge of having her own legal practice and helping her clients reach solutions. Pauline specialises in all aspects of family law, with an emphasis on relationship property cases. She recommends to couples owning property when entering a new relationship, or to couples separating, that they discuss their legal needs with a family lawyer. Pauline is a senior lawyer in respect of appointments from the Family Court affecting all generations. Pauline is also a qualified mediator and she assists people, where appropriate, to settle their disputes through mediation. Pauline says negotiated agreements are likely to be sorted out more quickly, at less cost and have long-standing positive outcomes, avoiding a judge making court orders which neither person may be happy with. Pauline is friendly, approachable and communicates easily with people. She offers clear, understandable advice and has empathy with her clients’ situations. “I’m passionate about my work and helping people resolve their family law problems,” she says.

Frank’s Trees is a family business with over 20 years’ nursery experience which they bring to their customers from their nursery on Golden Hills Rd. It may be called Frank’s Trees, but Tracy Goeddert is just as involved with the day-to-day operation of the business as her husband. From the paper work to potting, grafting, trimming, staking and general nursery work, as well as being the mother of two rugby-playing boys, she’s far more than just the office lady. Tracy and Frank have run their nursery for eight years, and have three hectares in trees. They grow most of them from scratch before they are potted. Frank’s Trees offers customers a range of quality plants from small to large, bare-root to bagged, evergreen to deciduous, and around 10,000 shrubs which will make a great addition to any property. Because it’s just the two of them they are only open to the public three days a week, but their website and Facebook page are always available.

Nelson’s rich history of characters, conflicts and celebrations is detailed

in this third volume of stories featuring discovery and survival,

heartbreak and triumph. These stories are about real people in real

situations and in some cases the truth really is stranger than fiction.

Whether you are picking this up for just a quick read, or are reading

Silver liningThe Murchison earthquake on 17 June 1929 devastated the town and killed 13 people, but it also had an unexpected positive spinoff. The quake hit in the middle of the Great Depression and the massive

damage created unexpected work, with numerous roads, bridges and buildings all needing extensive re-pair. Builders also arrived from out of the district and stayed for up to two years, fixing local homes.

The Richmond Rabbits will head into this weekend’s Tasman Rugby League semi-finals unbeaten, but their perfect record will mean nothing if the two-time champi-ons can’t get passed the Victory Phoenix Vikings.Richmond Rabbits president Deon Charles says his side will have to be wary of Victory Phoenix Vikings who have been “the success story” of the TRL season so far, reaching their first-ever playoff. “We’re defi-nitely expecting a big game against Victory this Saturday. We certainly know we’ve got a tough game and, if they saw the way we played on Friday night, they’ll probably be pretty confident themselves,” he says. The result Deon is talking about is their 38-36 win over Wanderers Wolves, which ended Wanderers’ hopes of reaching the semi-final, but only by the smallest of mar-gins. “The Wolves played a really smart game, they played the game we wanted to play. Even though

we’ve been unbeaten we haven’t been happy with our performanc-es at all, so we know we’re in for a tough afternoon on Saturday.”Deon says the team isn’t reading too much into their previous re-sults against Victory – which they won comfortably – and he knows the unbeaten record counts for nought if they can’t reach the final. “Being unbeaten means nothing now and all of the players know that, they’re very much aware of that. There are no second chances on Saturday. We’ve celebrated that success but we’re starting fresh now.”Top qualifiers Richmond will take on Victory at Lower Ngawhatu at 2:30pm, with traditional rivals Stoke Cobras and Tahunanui Ti-gers squaring off for the fourth year in a row at the semi-final stage, their game is at 1pm.

Phil Costley has won races all around New Zealand, and it was no surprise to see the champion marathon runner add another ti-tle to his illustrious career at Sat-urday’s Tasman Cross Country Championship.Competitive fields from each cat-egory — ranging between boys and girls under-13 right up until senior men and women — lined up for the first time at the Maitai

Valley Golf Course for Tasman’s annual cross country champion-ship. Paula Canning was too good in the eight kilometre senior women’s race with a time of 32 minutes 21 seconds, while Phil clocked in at 33 minutes 55 sec-onds after ten kilometres in the senior men's race. The Nelson Mountainbike Club is soon to be hosting Nelson’s first-ev-er night-time mountain bike event. Over the last five years mountain bike lights have gained in popularity due to their quality and affordablity so organisers have decided to actThe ride, called the “Ruru Express”, will be held on August 21. The event limited to 70 riders will take rid-ers up over the Tantragee saddle

via a climbing track off Brook St and down to the Maitai River trails which then guide riders back along the river toward the city. Once back at the end of the Maitai the course then quickly climbs to the centre of New Zealand then down to the Branford Park finish via the back downhill track. Entry information can be found at nelsonmtb.club/news/ride-the-ruru-express/

Prices Pharmacy Black’s agenda was defi-nitely set as they took on Nelson College in the promotion / relegation game on Sunday. Both teams have similar records in that they swept all before them in the respective rounds in Premier 2, however they were without a win in the elite grade.Only one goal separated them in their previous encounter for promotion / rel-egation.While Prices had an 11-5 lead after the first break, it was one-way traffic in the second period as they built to a 23-8 lead. Nelson gained possession through the efforts of Kea McGuinnetty and Ellie Bell but they couldn’t find a clear avenue through to their shooters, who found trouble in converting. Prices' Paige Pointon provided the inten-sity on the outside of the circle while Bex Watene was a menace at GD, with Joanna Andrew providing a wealth of experience as the last line of defence. Kat Soper and Brydee Stone found the circle edge well, using the pass and cut to full effect. Leigh Leigh Wiremu lead from the front and directed play, finding Emma Riddall with some deft passing.Although Nelson won the second half 23-19, the promotion was claimed by Prices 42-31. Kea was the standout for the col-lege team as she pulled in nine intercepts as well as a lot of tip ball. Her timing was impeccable as she claimed Prices' at-tempts at the long feed. There was praise for Lydia Swaney and Helen Dale who both stepped in the shooting circle.

“Commitment to our mutual model and a blend of people with experience and expertise ensures NBS continues to stand strong” said General Manager Ken Beams.

NBS has had continued success from our branch network, driving growth of 10% in total assets to $414 million as at 31 March 2014.

Residential, commercial, and agricultural mortgage lending also enjoyed growth of 10%.

A key component of NBS’ strategy has involved managing costs relative to growth and working to both increase productivity levels and make it easier for customers to do business with NBS. The NBS AccessDebit MasterCard® with international access, and the mobile banking application - NBS Mobile, have both been successfully introduced – enabling customers to have more flexibility and control over their banking.

“The financial results have been complimented by NBS’ ongoing commitment to the mutual banking model, by definition we’re here to service our customers and to work with the communities in which we operate” said Chairman Garry Dayman.

Through a combination of grants and sponsorships, the use of the NBS community vehicles, marquees and inflatables – NBS delivered $490,000 in community support for the year, with 241 groups supported across the network.

“Our steadfast, customer-focused ethos, and of course, our mutuality sets NBS apart. This year’s results would not have been possible without the loyalty and support of NBS’ most valuable assets: our customers and staff ” he added.

Nelson competed at the New Zealand Under 17 Tournament held last week on Auckland’s North Shore.Nelson had a great start to the tournament with a first up win against East Waikato 43-21. The Nelson girls came out firing, with Abbey Franklin leading the charge in the shooting cir-cle. Strong defensive work through court saw a number of tips converted. Makaila Powick was the pivotal link through court while Ari-ana Tekawa-Wiremu was the hunter outside the circle edge.Wellington was a skilled team who proved to be too tough in the second game, where they suf-focated Nelson’s attack at every opportunity. Pop-py Restieaux and Shani McLeod-Bennett toiled tirelessly throughout the 21-43 loss.In their final pool game Nelson lost 21-33 to Kapi Mana and 25-29 to Wait-akere 2. The loss to Wait-akere was a little disap-pointing as it meant the crossover games were against higher-placed teams.Nelson lost 26-33 to Wanganui which came down to a couple of cru-cial turnovers. Impres-sive shooting statistics were returned by Abbey, 21 from 23, while Pop-py had the perfect record. The loss put Nelson in the play-off for 25th-32nd.Nelson bounced back with an impressive 42-24 win against Pukekohe. All three shooters aver-aged over 80 per cent, while Shani and Poppy were a formidable defensive duo where they had good body position for rebounds and pulled in a number of well-timed intercepts. Makaila again had a high work rate at centre. The game against Eastern Bay of Plenty went goal for goal throughout with neither team able to dominate. A crucial turnover in the final quarter was enough for the northern team to get their noses in front to record a 31-27 win, despite another strong defensive effort by Shani and Poppy. Nelson were competitive against Waitakere 2, until the final quarter when they were defeated 24-40.Nelson were placed 28th out of the 40 teams, the same playing as last year, however there were another seven teams competing this year.

With the Crusaders taking on the Waratahs in the Super Rugby final this weekend, two Tas-man Makos have been called in to replace Rich-ie McCaw and Kieran Read at the All Blacks training camp.Shane Christie and Liam Squire will assemble with the All Blacks squad for a two-day camp on Auckland’s North Shore.Eight players from the Crusaders will be absent from the camp, and have been replaced by the next best players in their position, including the likes of Jeremy Thrush. Shane and Liam’s opportunity is hugely deserved after standout Super Rugby campaigns.
