The fight to control Grey Power has gotten physical, with support-ers of former president Neville Male forcing their way into the association’s office on Saturday and again on Monday morning. They claimed to be the rightful committee and refused to leave, as did supporters of the Kevin Gardener-led group, which in-

cludes office manager Pat Carrick and the executive committee. After the confrontation on Sat-urday, police told both parties to leave and gave the keys to the landlord until 8.30 on Monday morning, when they could prove who the rightful tenant is.The scene was repeated on Mon-day morning with police again

telling both parties to leave the building until the rightful group could be decided.Yesterday the national federation stepped into the battle, declaring its support for Kevin Gardener-

led group and saying it is the “proper authority to represent Grey Power in Nelson”, not the former president Neville Male.Mac Welch, national chair of the Grey Power Federation legal and regulation standing committee, told Nelson Weekly he is “disgust-ed with the manner with which the good name of Grey Power has

been brought into disrepute by some individuals in the Nelson area”. “Because of the wide-spread pub-licity, members are becoming confused with the various public statements and many have con-tacted me directly, demanding

that the federation sort out the situation between the factions – one led by Mr Gardener and the other by Mr Male.”He went on to say Grey Power has been built by its volunteers and it’s “deplorable that the good work in the area is being under-mined, and volunteer and staff reputations are being affected”.

By the end of last month, Mac says the federation was notified by Nelson Grey Power secre-tary that Neville’s Grey Power membership had been cancelled following a formal complaints hearing at which four of the five complaints were upheld. “Following this, Mr Male’s con-tact details have been removed from the Grey Power Federation database. As a further conse-

quence, the executive commit-tee has recommended to the full board meeting in Auckland today [Tuesday] that Mr Male cease and de-sist from claiming any affiliation to Grey Power.”Earlier, the bat-tle for control of Grey Power literally turned

into a struggle when the group backing Neville Male turned up on Saturday morning with a locksmith to change the locks. Office manager Pat

Carrick was heading to the of-fice to do some work and quickly

let herself in and locked the Male supporters others out. When another supporter of the anti-Neville fac-tion turned up she opened the door to

let him in and the others forced their way in, leaving the matter as a stalemate. The police were called and they took the keys off both parties and gave them to the landlord until they could prove who the rightful tenant is.The mess between Neville Male and the executive committee, who voted no confidence in him

and later expelled him from the membership, began last year when a restructure was opposed by the office manager and many of the organisation’s volunteers. Neville says he is still the presi-dent of the organisation as the at-tempt to kick him out was uncon-stitutional. He has appointed new committee members to replace those in the other group. But with the backing of the na-tional federation, it appears the anti-Male faction have won their fight to led the group, which has around 9000 members in Nelson. Kevin Gardener didn’t want to comment on the situation, other than to say Grey Power will hold an AGM in April to elect a new executive committee and presi-dent.

It may have been just a prac-tice, but with real-life scenar-ios, smoke and all, our emer-gency response teams proved they were up for the real deal, should it occur. Last Sunday saw a marine search and rescue exercise un-dertaken at Port Nelson, or-ganised by the Nelson Police, although combining the help-ing hands from a number of emergency response organisa-tions. “We have a marine search and rescue exercise every year, but this is the first time we’ve re-ally tried to incorporate all the other services into it,” says ser-geant Malcolm York. “It’s good to exercise our water based response and also our management team, the people

who are going to decide where they go and what they do, es-pecially in today’s scenario. It’s a good opportunity to exercise that inter-agency liaison; so how fire and ambulance and coastguard and police and eve-ryone work together. We have all learnt great lessons to take into this incident if it happens for real tomorrow.”More than 70 people were in-volved in the practice includ-ing police, fire service, ambu-lance, coastguard, surf rescue and volunteers. Scenario one involved a miss-ing paddle boarder and chil-dren in a kayak, which got

boats out on the water prac-ticing search techniques, and soon escalated to a fire on the wharf, caused by a petrol tanker refilling a Port Nelson tug boat. The fire excluded any assistance from the wharf and meant all of the response had to come from the water. Sea Cadets from the T.S Talisman bravely jumped into the water simulating crew in trouble and a crew member still on board required the services of a St John paramedic. “We were really stoked with how it went, we have learnt some lessons which we will ap-ply, but I think generally eve-ryone was really stoked, and if that had happened today, we would have had a really good result from it,” says Malcolm.

It was nervous laughter, not smack talk, that came from mouths of most Fight 4 Vic-tory boxers as they squared off at McCashin’s Brewery on Friday night. The face-off was to celebrate the launch of general admis-sion tickets for sale, as well as the half way point in the fighters’ official training.Organisers Barry Galbraith and Paul Hampton told those who had gathered to watch the face-off, that every dol-lar raised from the charity boxing event on April 4 will go straight to the charitable trust that runs the boxing gym.Corporate tables for the event sold out months ago

but a couple extras have been squeezed in and are now available. Paul says he’d like to see general admission tick-ets go just as fast. “We have

1300 tickets to sell and from the number of people asking me over the past few months when they go on sale, I think they’ll go pretty quick.”

Tickets are $35 each and on sale at Theatre Royal, Nel-son i-Site, Richmond Mall or online at www.ticketdirect.co.nz.

Three new, affordable homes have been built in Victory by the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust. The Trust has built three affordable rent-al homes as a comprehensive develop-ment on former Housing New Zealand land in Kawai St South. The site had stood empty for several years following

a fire. The houses are single story, two are two-bedroom duplexes and one is a three bedroom stand-alone house. This will be the trust’s fifth housing scheme and will bring its portfolio of affordable rental housing to 35 dwell-ings. It is currently working on another development in Victory which will pro-

vide a further four homes towards the end of this year. The houses are being rented to local families at below market rents and the families will also benefit from living in warm, energy-efficient homes that will be inexpensive to run and will provide them with a secure home.

Orcas back in our bay

Golden Bay Kayak’s Tony Bateup has a close encounter with Orca off-shore from Pohara last Wednesday. Photo: Tom Cooper.

Golden Bay Kayak’s Tony Bateup and Lisa Savage had a whale of time when they went out for a paddle off Pohara Beach last Wednesday, enjoying a close encounter with a pod of around “20 or 30” Orca.Tony says Lisa sighted the Orca at Taupo Point and they swam alongside their surf skis as they headed towards Tata Beach. Although Tony says he has paddled with Orca before, he has never seen so many or got so close as the Orca cruised alongside, swimming in the surf ski’s bow wake.“It was hard to tell exact numbers because they were coming up all over the place but there had to be at least 20 or 30,” Tony says. “They came around and stayed for ages too - they’d disappear and you’d think they had gone, and then they would come up again.“One of them swam right alongside the surf ski and rolled on its side and eyeballed me. There were two really big guys - I reckon one of them had a dorsal that was five feet high.”Department of Conservation ranger, Mike Ogle, says seeing a pod of orca this large is quite significant, as generally pods in the

area contain around six whales. He says the orca feed off the stingrays and an increase in stingrays is likely the cause for the high number of orca sightings this time of year.“They seem to come through, hang around for a while and move on.”He encourages people to enjoy the mammals and be amazed, but advises that there are some regulations around marine mammals. This is mainly due to boat noise irritating the animals.Vessels are not permitted within 50m of a marine mammal, and if there are more than three vessels you must stay 300m away. Swimming is not permitted within 100m. “Obviously it can’t be helped if they just pop up right beside a boat, but people should not follow or harass the animals.”Mark says there are only 150-200 whales in New Zealand so Tony and Lisa could have seen a good ten per cent of them. The photos of Tony and Lisa and the Orca were taken from Pohara Beachfront Motel by Tom Cooper, while a rather shaky video filmed by Tom on his cell phone can be viewed on nelsonweekly.co.nz

A revolutionary tree-harvest-ing machine, that has been de-veloped and manufactured in Nelson, is attracting attention from overseas buyers, with one of the $1.2million machines being exported to Canada this week. The project was initiated by Kelly Logging’s owner Nigel Kelly almost 10 years ago, after he was concerned that the ex-isting practise of using logging crews to fell and harvest trees on steep slopes was too risky. So Nigel got a team of Nelson designers and manufacturers together to build a machine that could harvest trees safely and efficiently on slopes of up to 45 degrees. And this week, the fifth aptly named ClimbMAX rolled off the production line and was exported to Canada where it will be used to harvest trees on Vancouver Island. Kelly Logging is already using two ClimbMAX machines in for-ests around Nelson and Mar-lborough, JB Logging is op-erating one in Napier, while a fourth is operating in British Columbia. “I could see that forestry crews were working in a high risk area on steep slopes, so I wanted to make it safer,” Nigel says. “ClimbMAX eliminates almost all manual tree-felling

and breaking-out, and makes harvesting on steep slopes safer and faster.”Nigel says designing and build-ing ClimbMAX, which “in simple terms” is a tree harvest-ing machine that operates us-ing a wire rope tether that is controlled by the inbuilt winch, was a collaboration between four Nelson companies. Kelly Logging initiated the project, Trinder Engineering modified the base machine to become a purpose-built, winch-assisted tree harvester, Fluid Power So-lutions designed the self-reg-ulating hydraulic systems and Rzoska Electrical developed the controlling software sys-tem. “It’s a real Nelson project and everyone has worked very hard to make it happen.” Nigel Kerry says it takes about sev-en months to build one of the machines, which starts off as a standard 33 tonne Hitachi ex-

cavator. “There’s not too much left of the original machine by the time we’ve finished,” Kerry says. “We change the cab, the boom and arm, and have to integrate all the winch system and a blade into a new under-carriage - there’s nothing else like it anywhere in the world.”Kerry says Gary Allen from Fluid Power and Rzoska Elec-trical’s Alan Jamieson both made significant contributions to the design and development of ClimbMAX.Although ClimbMAX is being used successfully in New Zea-land, Nigel predicts the big de-mand will come from Canada and the US where it is perfectly suited to their logging opera-tions. Nigel says they have been re-ceiving good feedback from the Canadian contractor that is already operating ClimbMAX and hope demand will grow.

Nelson could be on the verge of a world first, by eradicating the great white butterfly from the region. The project to eradicate the great white butterfly has been run by the Department of Conservation since 2013 in conjunction with a number of agencies, including both coun-cils.The project has relied heavily on members of the public to inform them of sightings of eggs, cater-pillars and butterflies. As a result, there has been just one sighting in the top of the south since the start of December.Project manager Mike Shepherd says the big push now is to make sure the butterflies are completely eradicated. If that’s the case, it will be the first time the butterflies have been successfully eradicated from any region in the world.“Most countries in Europe and Asia, where there’s a lot of these butterflies, have land borders, so they can’t try to eradicate these

kind of pests. But because we’re quite isolated, we can.”The butterflies cause massive dam-age to native plants and brassica vegetables and would have had a huge effect on the region’s market garden industry, as well as dairy, beef and sheep farming. The but-terfly was restricted to Nelson but would have spread if not contained when it was.In November 2013, 227 great white butterfly were found in Nelson, compared with just 12 in Novem-ber 2014. In December 2013, there were 220 detections compared to just one in December 2014.Martin says the current phase of the programme “Help us get to zero” is a public campaign urging people to hunt down any remaining eggs, caterpillars or butterfly. Autumn is the time of year the but-terflies emerge after remaining dor-mant in summer. DOC is urging people to contact them on 0800 800 99 66 if they see any signs of the butterfly, its eggs or caterpillars.

As Anzac Day approaches, the focus will be on those men who fought in World War One, but plenty of women also did more than their share for the cause and many of them were Nelson-trained nurses.Despite the eagerness of New Zealand nurses to serve in World War One, initially they were not supported by the govern-ment, with the New Zealand Crown Law office stating that war was not a place for women.Meanwhile, the Australian government asked for 12 nurses to join the Australian Army Nursing Services who were soon to depart for Egypt-they left New Zealand on April 1, 1915. Nelson’s Ethel Dement was one of the 12 nurses who arrived in France on April 6, 1916, and she was placed in a British hospital. An excerpt from a letter Ethel wrote from a British hospital “somewhere in France” said:“Tommy is so fine, so cheery in his priva-tions, with the quaintest sayings and an-tics, and if you could only see them here after having faced death so often you would see another phase of the human, a phase which is new to us who have never faced war before”.Finally the New Zealand government re-lented and on April 6, 1915, 110 nurses

were officially enlisted in the New Zealand Army Nursing Service. During the course of the war, 39 nurses who either trained, were born, or lived in our region, joined the service. Some nurses were placed in casualty wards in England and others in dressing and cas-ualty clearing stations, where the more se-riously injured were attended to before be-ing moved to a mobile hospital or shipped back to England for major trauma treat-ment. In some instances, patients arrived straight from the front, with un-cleaned wounds and covered in mud. Nurses worked long hours under very trying conditions and days off were few. Sickness was also a problem with several Nelson nurses experiencing influenza, ex-haustion, measles and tonsillitis. Gertrude Barker trained as a nurse at Nel-son Hospital before embarking onboard troop ship SS Athenic on December 31, 1917, bound for the military hospital at Walton on Thames in England. She grew up on the family farm at Stanley Brook, Tasman, and always wanted to be a nurse but her father didn’t believe she was intelligent enough to qualify, so she was sent to live with her aunts in Nelson and worked as a dress maker. Gertrude wanted to prove her father wrong and, at the age of 21, enrolled in the nursing course at Nel-son Hospital, graduating with honours in

1916. At the time of enlisting in the New Zealand Army Nursing Service she gave her address as Te Rangi Private Hospital, Collingwood St, Nelson. Her great niece, Janice Brown from Ani-seed Valley, recorded Gertrude’s life and recalls her family telling her that while Gertrude stood on the verandah at the hospital, she could hear the guns firing in France and knew that the next train would bring another load of casualties. Like many of the nurses during this time, she suffered from influenza and was ad-mitted to the General Hospital at Walton on Thames. She left England in September 1919 to travel home and was with the New Zealand Army Service for two years before

being discharged on October 1, 1919. Gertrude returned home to Nelson a phys-ical wreck, due to the stresses of casualty nursing and the gruelling voyage home. She was a changed woman and a con-firmed pacifist, having seen the devasta-tion of war.She purchased a small house on the Ridge-way in Stoke, where she lived with her sisters. When the Spanish influenza epi-demic arrived in Nelson in 1919, she was called in to help nurse Nelson College boys at the infirmary. It was there she met her husband Eric Watkin, a teacher at the col-lege. They married, had two children, and lived in Stoke until her husband secured a teaching position at the Wanganui Techni-cal College in 1930, where she lived until her death in 1956.Gertrude was awarded a British War Med-al for her service in 1921. Servicewomen were welcomed back home and awarded extra decorations, such as the Royal Red Cross. However, whereas some of their fellow servicemen were given loans and farm land, there was nothing like that for the women who served. In all, 550 nurses served with the New Zea-land Army Service overseas during WWI.If you would like further information on nurses and chaplains who served in WWI, please contact Cheryl Carnahan at the Nelson Genealogy Library.

It came as a massive shock to the Nelson rugby community when “local legend” Barry Leary was diagnosed with a rare inflammatory disorder – but now they’re rallying to do something he’s been doing for years, help out.Barry, affectionately known as “Bazza”, has dedicated the past 20 years to the Stoke Rugby Club and for the past 15 years he coached Nelson Under 52kgs.On January 31, Barry came down with flu-like symptoms. He ended up in the Wellington intensive care unit with a rare central nervous infection, Bickerstaff Encephalitis.Tasman rugby union community rugby manager and friend of Barry, Kahu Marfell, says kids and parents involved with the club were devastated by the news. “I’ve talked to many a parent in the last week or so and they all agree that he is larger than life and he has got a personality the same. He’s always got a smile and gives the boys a high five whenever they see him. That’s the sort of relationship he builds up with kids.”He says Barry has made a massive impact on the lives of the kids he has coached.“He’s got a big personality, but a big heart too. On the outside Bazz is a rough diamond, a couple of broken noses, a couple of teeth missing, but he has the biggest heart when it comes to boys who he’s coached.”Kahu, along with several of Barry’s friends, has started up a donation page on givealittle.co.nz in order to help Barry through any financial hurdles involved in rehabilitation. As of yesterday afternoon, they had raised $5,683.50 for Barry. “It just shows how many people he’s actually connected with. Over 86 people have donated.”Kahu says, at present Barry is unable to talk, but the last time he heard he was “gradually improving”. “For anyone who loves a yarn or has been a communicator in the past, to not be able to talk could be quite frustrating.”

School bands to show their metalSeven local college bands will step out from the garage to perform in front of hundreds of fans this Saturday. The all-ages event, called “Just Metal”, is being organised by Nelson’s Danny Freilich who wanted to provide an opportunity for young bands to gain professional live performance experience, as well as providing a safe and affordable event for teenagers.Legacy of Disorder, a Nelson metal band which has recorded two albums in the USA, will headline the concert. Nelson College student, Cameron Marchbank, 16, plays in a band called Westbrook and says getting to play at the Theatre Royal will be a big buzz. “We were there for Rockquest last

year but hopefully, with this being a heavy metal gig, it will be even louder.”The idea for the concert started last year when Nayland College teacher Duncan McKinlay contacted Danny, saying heavy metal bands at his school would love the experience to play a gig with Legacy of Disorder.Local businesses have also come to the party. Begg’s Musicworks is providing a professional backline and drums for the school bands, and NBS are sponsoring a free bus which will pick up and drop off students who want to come in and watch the show.Tickets are $15 at the door, or $10 at local colleges. Doors for the February 28 concert open at 4pm, with the show starting at 5pm.

Nelson’s young professionals have had a busy start to the new year, both in the office and out of it.Nelson Young Professionals host a range of events each year and 2015 has already been busy with a mini-seminar been and gone, and the popular BBQ in the Vines being held this Friday, February 27.President Michelle Byczkow says the BBQ in the Vines is the most popular event on the group’s calendar, after the spring ball. It gives people in the first 15 years of their career the opportunity to spend an evening drinking wine and eating great food with like-minded people, at Kaimira Estate in Brightwater. The double-decker bus will pick 50 BBQ-goers up from Nelson city, Stoke and Richmond before getting to Kaimira, where a barbeque and wine will keep people fully entertained. Michelle says it’s such a fun day and they’ve already had strong interest from members, but are keen for non-members to come along as well. “It’s only $25 for non-members and that includes the bus and food, with alcohol to be bought on top of that. It’s a great day and always heaps of fun.”For ticket information email [email protected] or head to the group’s Facebook page.Although the big social events are the most popular, Michelle says Nelson Young Professionals are about far more than that and host business – as well as social – events each month.Already this year they’ve hosted a talk from ACC and IRD, and have several more planned for this year, including a talk about buying your first home. “We like to have one major event a month but there’s lot of other little things as well, like a touch rugby team, squash and going out for drinks.”Michelle says being member also has fiscal rewards with several local retailers offering discounts to members, including the Sprig & Fern in Tahuna, Yello Café, Nelson Tailor’s Menswear and Cheryl Mackie. She says the group is in good heart with a strong membership, but it is always keen for new people to get involved. She also praised the support from the group’s major sponsors, RCWA, ANZ and Duncan Cotterill.

Donated bras for islands:Well this might not be big news for some, but for some of the

women of Vanuatu, this is big.Donations of bras has climbed from the reported 250 to 542 and will be distrib-uted to the Ni Vanuatu women who are currently working in the Nelson Bays region under the RSE scheme. With the help of Lea from Captivation Lingerie store in Richmond, the Up-lift Project in Christchurch and Alison Moore from Puncdot, a pictorial image is being produced with instructions in Bislama (one of the main languages in Vanuatu) on the correct fitting of a bra – thus ensuring a more comfortable ex-perience for the women who may not have worn a bra before.Alongside the 542 bras, an estimated 1 cubic metre of sheets, towels, pillow-cases and lightweight duvet covers have been donated, and have now all been

distributed to the workers in both the Nelson Bays and Marlborough regions for them to take home to their villag-es. All of this after an article in Nelson Weekly.I would like to thank the generosity of Nelsonians who have donated to these two projects. All the items collected may have been surplus to people here, but will soon gain a new lease on life in Vanuatu. Belinda Roselli.

What would you like Nelson City Council to do this year:

The ability to install clean air burners! Money to help people

Being a part of the Fight 4 Victory is a massive personal challenge – that’s no secret. But it’s not just the training that takes some adjustment, the added attention takes just as much getting used to.The training for Fight 4 Victory has taken over my life to some degree. When I’m not doing it I’m thinking about it or can still feel those stiff muscles as a result of it. All of that I expected. What I didn’t expect was all the stuff that comes with it – promotional stuff, interest from the public, which may seem a little odd coming from a journalist. Since it was announced in Nelson Weekly that I’d be fighting Hayden Thompson, there’s been plenty of interest. I’ve had friends of his tell me to make sure I hit him hard, I’ve had friends of his tell me that he will “waste” me. I’ve had his old rugby coach pop into my office to tell me what a grave mistake I’ve made, “he knocked out ten guys in one season”, I was told. I’ve also had the 11 year old son of the Weekly’s owner ask me if he can come and watch the fight with his butterfly net, “to catch your teeth as they get knocked out”.As you can imagine, none of this made me feel particularly chipper. In pubs, supermarkets, and even down Trafal-gar St and in Richmond Mall, I’ve had people come up to me asking how the training is go-ing. I didn’t expect that. People are genuinely interested and excited about the event. That’s a testament to the success of the original Fight 4 Victory in 2013. And then there are the radio shows, promotion-al photos and even this column.Last week, Hayden and I were invited onto the morning sports show on Newstalk ZB with Murray Leaning and Dave Birdling. It was a bloody good laugh and was the first time I’d seen Hayden since the fight was announced. We eyed each other up and he told the show’s audience that I could have a career in music after the fight because I would have had “more hits than Elvis”. And on Friday night we all lined up at Mc-Cashin's Brewery to have our photos taken by Evan Barnes from Shuttersport for the official fight programme. I’m not used to being on the other side of the camera and all the attention is taking a bit of getting used to.All the while the training, the relentless train-ing, continues to dominate our lives. It's five and a half weeks until the fight and the interest from the public just increases the pres-sure we feel, which provides plenty of motiva-tion for training.

Taking a dipOne of Nelson’s early public baths opened in 1867 on the Hardy St frontage of what is now the Queen’s Gardens. Although built on Council leased land they were owned and run by medical herbalist

Henry Barraclough and closed 20 years later. The Marine Baths on Wakefield Quay near today’s Yacht Club opened in 1878. The popular saltwater baths closed in 1909 and there was no public swimming baths until the Municipal Pool opened at Riverside in 1927.

When Nelson band “A Month öf Sundays” was formed a year ago they played their first gig at the Reapers Motorbike Club's Owen River Party. This year, they are back to play at the event once more in support of child cancer.Lead singer Brent Thomason describes the band as a “mix of rock and heavy rock,” play-ing covers of Metallica, Guns

and Roses, Motley Crew and Wasps. They also have a couple of original songs. With regular gigs at the Turf Hotel, as well as events at the Shark Club and Rattle and Hum, the band are quickly be-coming a Nelson staple.Along with Brent, the band in-cludes guitarist Tony Mac, bass guitarist Michael Holmes and Glen Squire on drums. On March 6 and 7, A.M.ö.S will be playing at the third annual

The lack of a campfire didn’t hinder the scouting spirit as scouts from around the region attended their annual Found-ers Day camp at Wairoa Gorge last weekend.Due to the hot weather a fire was a no-go, but scouts enjoyed a range of activities including abseiling, shooting, bashing apart an old car and kayaking.Three hundred people attend-ed the event, with all scouting sections as well as brownies and guides enjoying the expe-rience. Zone scout section leader, Michelle Rooney, says plan-ning for this year's camp be-

gan straight after the last year's and they try to make improve-ments each year. She says the camp celebrates the birthday of scouting found-er Robert Baden Powell, who shares his February 22 birth-day with his wife, Olave, who was heavily involved in the guide movement.Michelle says scouting is just as relevant today as it was when it started in 1907.“It still teaches kids things like leadership skills and team-work. I think you notice it with kids that have gone through scouting, They have a different approach to life. "They’re easier to talk to, they know how to communicate

with people, they don’t seem to get into trouble as much.” She says the fundamental prin-cipals are still there but the movement has modernised and become very open. The 480-strong zone has been steadily growing, with two cub packs and two kea clubs start-ing in the last year. Michelle says the only strug-gle they have is finding enough leaders.“We’d love to have more lead-ers, it’s a lot of fun. There’s op-portunities for leaders as well, it’s really quite rewarding when you see kids grow"She says anybody wanting to join can find a local group by calling 0800 SCOUTS.

Stressed office workers in Nelson will have an opportunity to relax and re-set their minds and bodies at free yoga sessions on the lawns outside the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technol-ogy, starting this Friday.MiGym's yoga instructor, Karolina Brejchova, will be taking the Yoga in the Park session, which will be suitable for all levels, including beginners. She says MiGym runs a number of community events and wanted to hold the month-long programme to give people a chance to try yoga and "de-stress" after a hard morning at work."It will be a great way to free-up the mind and re-set the body, especially for people who have been working and getting stressed in front of a computer all morning," Karolina says. "Yoga has so many benefits that happen quite quickly, so I'd say to people come and do 45 minutes and see for themselves."Karolina, who last year spent four months stud-ying yoga in India, has been practising yoga for 10 years and an instructor at MiGym since 2012.MiGym's Trevor Voyce says Yoga in the Park will also be a chance for new NMIT students to engage with Nelsonians. "The students have orientation starting this Fri-day and this gives them a chance to do some-thing with people in Nelson," Trevor says. "We also want to encourage people to be active and use the great outdoors we have here in Nel-son."Yoga in the Park will be held on the lawns out-side NMIT, off Hardy St, every Friday, starting at 12.15pm from February 27 to March 27. A wet weather venue at NMIT will be available if it rains.Mats are not necessary but can be purchased for $20, or bring a towel. For more information phone MiGym on 5390116.

LAKE ROTOITI NELSON LAKES REGATTA

st March

The Acceleration on Water Festival of Speed Tour continues this weekend with a two day regatta of full-on racing. The Lake Ro-toiti Power Boat Club is proud to host the Lake Rotoiti Nelson Lakes Regatta, the third round of a five series national competition. The annual event is continually growing and watersport event manager from Accelera-tion on Water, Denise Preece, says numbers of those coming to watch last year’s regatta were good. “It was pretty spectacular last time and we were really impressed with the number of people who drove up there. It’s not far from Nelson, only a 50 minute or so drive.” This will be the third time out in the water for drivers, although it’s the first of three rounds for the South Island. The power boat

season kicked off in November last year, with the first round hosted by Wanganui and the second held at Lake Karapiro in Cam-bridge on February 1. After the Lake Rotoiti Nelson Lakes Regatta, drivers will travel to Hokitika for Easter weekend races and then things will come to a close in Cromwell on Anzac weekend. It’s one of the biggest events on the power boat calendar and will determine who gains the title of 1NZ Cham-pion for 2015. Drivers will be coming from around the country to compete; as far north as Auckland and as far south as Invercargill. “It’s the third round of our national series and I’m currently sitting on third place on the table,” says locally-based driver and 1NZ champion for 2013, Julian Stilwell. “We were first after the first round so I’m quite

keen to get back up the table. We had a good round last round but it’s quite competitive and quite tough, we’ve got probably seven other guys that are quite capable of winning the round. The biggest thing at Rotoiti is altitude, it’s a lot higher than most of the other venues we race on, which has quite a lot to do with turning. Formula 1 as a class is becoming quite strong nationwide and this is the clos-est season we’ve ever had, with the most drivers that we’ve had capable of running at the top. It’s very competitive this season compared to others.” For spectators, the chance to see the power boats in action is an opportunity not to be missed. “It’s unique in that it’s unpredicta-ble. track and that’s constant, but when you’re on a race track on the water it changes and every race is different because the water changes, so the boats are quite spectacular because they can get out of shape and it’s quite a skill for the guys to read the water because it can get rough; it’s just something different,” says Denise. There are 22 races each day with most of the classes racing 4 laps of the triangular Lake Rotoiti circuit, while the Formula 1 Tunnels begin with a beach start and must complete 10 laps. “There’s a variety of racing from jun-ior class racing to the top level of powerboat racing in New Zealand,” says Denise. Boats competing this weekend include the grand

prix hydroplanes, formula one tunnels, jun-ior class racing, clubmans class; which is an entry-level class, 2.5 hydroplanes and the pro-stock and pro-com. This weekend also marks 50 years of the AE Baker Australasian Hydroplane Champion-ships. The competition is run between Aus-tralia and New Zealand. Thirteen years ago New Zealand sent a team to Australia which won the championships that gave them the right to bring it back to New Zealand, and until someone from Australia comes over here and beats the New Zealand team, it will remain here. Those watching the weekend’s racing will no doubt also be marvelling at the speed these

boats can reach. The Formula 1 Tunnels get-ting up to, and in excess of, 145mph while the grand prix hydroplanes reach 180mph. The event will be family-friendly too, as the Department of Conservation and Fish and Game will be organising a range of enter-tainment activities for children. Food will be on offer too, as part of a fundraising activity for Rotoiti School group the Kea Chicks. Head out to Lake Rotoiti this weekend and get amongst the action. Check out the power boats, enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere and support the local drivers. Racing begins on Saturday and Sunday around 11am and finishes at 4pm. This all-ages event is free for children and only $10 for adults.

Serving the top of the South since 1881A family affair: Dave Bary with his son Jesse will build a bed to suit you.

N E L S O N

59 Quarantine Rd, Nelson Ph: 547 4567 www.nelsonbeds.co.nzOpen: 8:30am - 5:00pm Monday to Friday • 10:00am to 2:00pm Saturday • By appointment on Sunday

Nelson’s only locally owned & operated bed manufacturer

The Bary family have been servicing the district since 1881 and Nelson Beds owner Dave Bary is proud to be included in the line of hard workers. Gustaf Bary established the first business of the Bary family in the district, having moved across from Collingwood. In 1881, in the town of Renwick, Bary and Sons was established. It was the general store of-fering a number of services including drapers and clothiers, house furnishings, grocers and ironmongers, and a butter plant that took local milk, turned it into butter and shipped it off to England, as well as the post and telegraph office which eventually moved to its own location as the area grew. In fact a fair chunk of the land the Blenheim township now sits on

used to be owned by the Bary’s, with Gustaf being the first man to erect a wire fence in the Marlborough province. At that time Blenheim was known as Beavertown, with Ren-wick being the main centre. Nelson Beds thrives on the values that have been passed down through the generations and Dave believes his fam-ily’s long standing commitment to the area just proves that Nelson Beds is a solid name you can both trust and rely on. It’s the longest-standing specialty bed store in Nelson, with Dave behind 21 years of the business’s 25 year history, and there’s one thing that Dave and his team do very well; and that is they produce a very high-quality bed.

We spend almost one third of our lives in bed and it’s a place not just to sleep but also to relax, rest and recover. The suc-cess of our day depends on a good night’s sleep, making a bed one of the most important investments a person can make. The Nelson Beds showroom has a wide selection of both mattresses and bedroom furniture for clients to chose from. However, if upon delivery of your bed into your home your initial choice proves to be too firm, or alternatively too soft, or just somehow doesn’t seem to quite have the right feel for you, you need not fear that you will be stuck with it. Nelson Beds can make the required adjustments to make it just right for you. And that’s where Nelson Beds are unique,

they are happy to work with you until it’s just right. Not only will they work with their clients to hand craft the perfect bed, they are committed to quality which comes from research-ing and using high performance materials. Nelson Beds don’t just sell beds, they sell sleep. “Customers get a level of service that they just won’t get anywhere else. Our staff will deal with the customer in the showroom, then the same person will be out in the factory making their inner sprung mattress or base. When we’re not out there selling them, we’re out back making them,” says Dave. They can provide hideaway bases and drawer bases in a wide range of options,

they can also custom-create designer headboards and bases, offering a huge selection of colours and material coverings to chose from, which can add a designer touch to your bed and transform the room. You won’t find sales with 50 per cent off here, because Nelson Beds consistently give their customers prices that accurately reflect the quality, care and craftsman-ship that has gone into the products, meaning that at their standard factory prices they are mostly always more com-petitive than other stores. Although operating independent-ly, Nelson Beds also belongs to a collective of similar busi-ness groups, enabling them to combine their buying power,

enuring they purchase quality components at the best price. Their showroom also operates from the factory. This, along with their buying power, allows Nelson Beds to cut out the middleman from your purchase and offer top quality beds at factory-direct prices. Nothing can beat a good night’s sleep, so when you want a bed that lives up to expectations, and have your body’s requirements in mind, come and talk to the expert team at Nelson Beds. You’ll find their showroom and factory at 59 Quarantine Rd, Stoke.

Classical equestrian art showcases the beauty and elegance of horses in a whole new light and thanks to Eleena Kennedy, Nelson is now home to the ancient art of equestrian training. Eleena has been operating her business with horses for 20 years and is now setting up here, offering a touch of something truly unique to special events using equine theatre. Her shows involve her horse Zefiro following instructions to walk sideways, leap in mid air and rear up - also known as dancing. Eleena and Zefiro’s last outing saw them entertain 200 residents of Ernst Rutherford who were thrilled at the end when they were each able to offer Zefiro a carrot. Eleena also offers a leather repair service after she saw a gap in the market when she required repairs for her horse covers. Whether its saddle bags, chaps, motorcycle gear or more intimate creations for adult wear, Eleena can create or repair any leather items. Eleena is known in Auckland’s equestrian circles for her work, which is unique even throughout New Zealand, and one day hopes to put Zefiro on the WOW stage. Until then, Eleena and Zefiro welcome any enquiries to perform at weddings, or other special events, or in regards to Eleena’s leather wear business.

Suffering from particularly dry and sensitive skin, and feeling skeptical about the idea of ‘peels, facials and other stuff going on my face, I can now say that my experience has been fantastic. Bedelia is very aware and understanding of skin conditions and with the products that she uses and her knowledge of them, my skin has improved beyond belief in the past four months.” - Catherine Henry. Stonehurst Farm and The Nelson ARK invite you to join them for their annual open day on Sunday, March 1. Since joining forces, the two groups have been op-erating in harmony to provide a supportive and safe environment for those working with both dogs and horses. Their open day is a chance for people to share in the wonderful work they do and learn more about

how they can become a part of it. Originally a riding school and trekking busi-ness, Stonehurst has successfully re-invent-ed itself, offering horse owners excellent fa-cilities for riding and grazing their animals. Owners Laurence and Suzanne Max are pas-sionate about horses, and their full working farm includes 50 hectares of managed graz-ing as well as a wide variety of farm trails, including access to 250 hectares of neigh-bouring farmland and a five kilometre river boundary. Grazing services include hay fed twice daily all year round, saved grass strip fed as required, fences, water and well main-tained pastures, twice daily check on horses, individual feeding programmes if required, float hire, animal health and hoof care pro-vided as required, top instructors available for lessons, and clinics held on site for those looking to learn more about equine topics. The fantastic grazing opportunities are en-hanced by Stonehurst Farms facilities, which make it the perfect place for casual hire to in-dividuals or groups from any discipline. The riding centre is open seven days a week with a casual rate of just $10 an hour per horse, or their special rate means you have unlim-ited use of the grounds for $60 a month. The farm encompasses three all-weather floodlit arenas – being a 30 metre round arena, 80 metre by 40 metre show jumping/dressage

arena and an 18 metre round start-ing arena. They also offer a new all-purpose 65 metre by 35 metre arena of screened topsoil, use of the yards, holding and grazing paddocks, parking, float access and extensive farm riding. Their new riding arena has been a major investment for the

farm that is already reeling in posi-tive reviews. “It’s a good surface. Good grip, secure footing but good cushioning, it would be suitable for any equine discipline,” says well-known local horse trainer, Justin Cooney. “It’s a really safe environment for

Karen Howieson with ARK dog Koru, Suzanne and Laurence Max, and horse Dodge.

people to ride in and there’s always help and sup-port on hand. We’ve got horse grazing as well as facility hire. It’s open for anyone who wants to bring their horses, anyone that wants to hold a clinic, pony clubs or any riding clubs that want to hold an event, we’ve got everything - picnic facilities, shade, kitchen, pens, toilets, and park-ing,” says Suzanne. The Nelson ARK has also recognised the unique set up of Stonehurst Farm, and is proud to base its charitable organisation there too. “Our focus is on working with young people who have lost their way and need some help with building skills and their self esteem, and we place them along-side dogs that are not immediately re-homeable,” says The Nelson ARK’s community co-ordinator, Karen Howieson. “We run a programme, which is an 8 week intensive programme, where they are responsible for retraining a dog. The dog training component teaches those young people respect, responsibility, problem solving and dis-cipline, and then we have a second component called 'healing species', which is a compassion

education violence-intervention programme and that is to help young people learn to deal with difficult situations and to hold on to their power.” There are a number of benefits that have come from working closely together and both groups receive a lot of support from the other. “We share certain facilities and that kind of reduces the overheads, but we also do an equine session and going forward we will look at an equine pro-gramme, based on the APART (Animals People And Rehabilitative training) programme. Lau-rence and Suzanne are supportive of what we do and vice versa, and a number of the people who have horses here come and volunteer for the ARK, so it all works; it’s actually quite a commu-nity that we have here and so relationships and communication are all very important,” says Ka-ren. The annual open day for Stonehurst and The Nel-son ARK is the perfect opportunity to come and share in the positive work that both groups are doing. Having updated their logo and with a new website on its way, The ARK Nelson are keen to

welcome new volunteers into their organisation.“Without volunteers the ARK wouldn’t be able to operate, and it’s also important for people to know who we are and where we are,” says Karen. “We’re always desperate for foster families who are willing to look after the dogs for the duration of the programme, the ARK pays for all expenses, but we always need new families because many of them fall in love with the dogs and end up adopt-ing them.” There’s a whole range of volunteer work available, depending on people’s skills, from the dog advi-sory group, fundraising committee, and youth advisory group to vol-unteers for stalls at events, cleaning and accounts. Through the APART programme, The Nelson ARK also supports people who are interested

in working with young people, with training and support to complete their level 3 youth work certificate. The Nelson ARK will have its offices open during the open day for any people looking to learn more about supporting the group, while Stone-hurst Farm is free to be explored, with Laurence and Suzanne on hand for any enquiries about facility hire or grazing. The annual open day will include a number of other activities including pony rides, horse and cart rides, a bouncy castle, horse and dog demonstrations, second-hand horse gear for sale, ice cream, a sausage siz-zle and coffee. The day will run from 10am until 2pm, so come down and see this fantastic set-up for yourself. Stonehurst Farm and The Nelson ARK are situated at 165 Haycock Road in Hope.

Nelson’s Triple One Care in the Wakatu Industrial Estate benefits from a team that have many years of knowledge and experience in the first aid in-dustry and they would like to welcome the newly appointed Regional manager for Nelson, Tasman and West Coast district, Lisa Mellish. Lisa has a back-ground in emergency manage-ment which started when she began her career with the New Zealand Army, followed by the Red Cross; working as a team leader for the response team on the West Coast, which she helped set up and operate, and included her involvement in the Christchurch quakes and Pike River mine. Lisa has also worked with Civil Defence on the West Coast as well as being a St John Ambulance Officer. Supporting her is Brian Robinson; former regional man-ager, tutor, medic and backbone of the branch who is a current and long-time member of the local Land Search and Rescue team, Louis Standfield; main tu-tor and medic who is also a current and long-time member and Team Leader of the Nelson Search and Rescue team and Jock Stewart; a part time tutor who is highly-experienced and highly-rec-ommended. His previous placements include being an instructor for AUT and a paramedic for St John for many

years; a job he still maintains part time. “We don’t mind if our tutors/medics go out and work or volunteer part-time for another similar company, in fact it’s beneficial as it gives them a wider range of skills and experiences. Some people within the industry are hung up on what emergency service is better, my reply to that is, get a grip, people, we are all here for the same goal at the end of the day, which is to help people regardless of what emergency service you work for,” says Lisa. With Triple One Care’s services being in high demand and growing nationally, it

only makes sense that the offshoot to that is high demand coming into the Nelson Tasman & West Coast region. Needless to say Lisa and her team will be looking for additional medics and tutors in the near future. Those who do become part of the Triple One Care team must know their stuff in theory and have the practical skills to back it up. “We aren’t volunteers, we’re all paid professionals and we’re highly-experienced, and that’s how we like to keep it,” says Lisa. If you think you have what it takes, contact Triple One Care today.People may be surprised to know that

Triple One Care is not only a 100% New Zealand compa-ny, but is also the largest commercial nationwide first aid provider. They have branches and franchises throughout New Zealand and are looking at opening further fran-chises this year to meet the growing opportunities. Their services are currently in high demand because they not only provide first aid training, but also offer medical cover at public and private events, supply first aid products, of-fer one-on-one industry consultations and conduct tailor-made private courses. These services are in high demand as the tutors not only get to talk the walk, but walk the talk too. You know you are in good hands with Triple One Care. With the new Health and Safety bill looming this year, companies are ensuring they are compliant. Talk to Triple One Care about them being your one stop shop for all first aid requirements; getting your employees through a first aid course, they can arrange for this to happen at a time convenient to you, they can come to your location or you can come to their training room at no further cost, they can even split the course in two so your employees are not away for the whole day. Need to get your first aid kits compliant as well? Talk with their friendly team and

they will recommend a kit that best suits your needs, they can even come to your location on a regular basis and au-dit your kits so they are always clean, tidy, fully stocked and up-to-date.Courses offered by Triple One Care cover many areas of first aid, from workplace first aid, pre-hospital emergency care, CPR, outdoor first aid to first aid for young children. Specialist courses for the New Zealand Resuscitation Council, specialised courses for dental practices and GP’s under the NZ Dental Association and the Royal NZ College of General Practitioners. Their outdoor education courses are not only run by Triple One Care within their regions, but NMIT also utilise these courses and Triple One Care trainers nationwide. Triple One care is the only Government approved provider on the MBIE web site servicing major government

departments offering a syndicated procurement contract. Schools nationwide also come under this contract with some schools locally having already taken advantage of the discounted rates they are eligible to. Other national clients who choose Triple One Care as their preferred first aid provider include NZ Land Search & Rescue, Surf Life Saving NZ, Coastguard, Immigration NZ, Med Call, Mountain Safety Council, BNZ, BCITO, HHL etc. Triple One Care is the specialist in event first aid and medical cover, offering their services to a diverse range of events. They work predominantly with larger events like national sporting competitions such as mountain biking competitions, although will take on the grass-roots, smaller, local events. Triple One Care has a network of fully-experienced medics across the country who provide experienced support to hundreds of events throughout the year.

Nelson College for Girls A defeated Marlborough Girls College in the Tasman Regional Secondary Schools Tennis Competition played in Nelson last Friday, to qualify for the South Island champs to be played in Timaru next month.Year 9 student Monique Hore, playing number one for Nelson, had a tough first set in the singles against Ab-bey Hogg of Marlborough Girls, winning 7-6 before taking the second 6-2 to win the match. Holly Mace dominated her singles, winning 6-2, 6-2 to help Nelson record three singles wins and two doubles wins to take the title. Marlborough Girls was second and Nelson Girls B third.Marlborough College A team turned the tables on last year’s result, dominating the boys' division and beating Nelson College A team across all singles matches to take the title. Nelson's Ben Hazlett played well to push Mar-lborough's Josh Gwynne in both sets, losing 6-4, 6-4.Marlborough B was third and Nelson B fourth. The mixed competition was won by Golden Bay, beat-ing Waimea College by six games in a count back. Nayland College's Sophie Young and Frances Clark of Golden Bay High School had one of the longest games of the day, with Frances winning the third set in a tie break 7-5. Six teams competed in the social grade, which Sport Tasman's secondary schools regional sport director Jeni Nunn says gives new players an opportunity to compete against other students in their age group. Motueka High School's boys' team won the social grade competition.Games were played at the Tasman Tennis Centre and Hope Tennis Club.

mates and get ready for some serious fishing be-cause the biggest fish caught on the day will get the biggest prize. No lucky prize draw for spec-tators here, you need to do the hard yards for a chance at a reward. Things kick off at 5am on Saturday, March 7, al-though people can stake out their spot and get set up as early as they wish. However, like any competition, there are a few rules that need to be followed and the honesty of those competing is essential for a good clean competition. While the full list of rules can be viewed on the website at www.tasmanbaysnapperclassic.co.nz, some of the more important conditions include all

fish to be presented whole at the weigh in, late weigh ins will not be accepted; you must be in the queue by 5pm, one line in the water per per-son, fish must be played by only one angler, no long lines or set nets in the water or to be carried on the boat, no sharks or rays are to be taken or killed, and of course, safety is key so don’t forget your lifejackets. A little bit of fishing etiquette is also required, so don’t park up within 100 metres of another boat, please refrain from speeding past other boats or kayaks, or anchoring in someone’s burley trail. Please keep the public ramp as clear as possible and remove all fish and waste from The Speights Ale House at the end of the night. Other than those ground rules, Tasman Bay is your oyster

so have fun and happy fishing. Prize giving will commence at The Speights Ale House at 7pm, but if you finish early and want to stake your claim on a good viewing spot for the weigh in, Speights will be open for food and drinks from 10am. A courtesy van from Rich-mond to Atawhai means there is no excuse to drink and drive. The evening will also feature a fish and donated item auction with all pro-ceeds going to the Big Brothers Big Sisters charity. The auction is not only open to en-trants but the general public as well, start-ing at 5:45pm. There will be a free meal and drink for every entrant into the competi-tion and afterwards you can rock the night away to a great band. Prizes include over $4500 in Simrad Electronics and fishing gear for the heaviest snapper, over $1000 of fishing gear and donated items for the av-erage-sized snapper, $4000 of Shimano and Bite Fishing Tackle from Big Blue Dive & Fish, a brand new 2.5hp Mercury outboard engine from Totally Boating, and over $750 in cosmetics from Unichem Pharmacy for women’s heaviest snapper. If the weather does pose a problem, the compe-tition will be postponed until the following day, Sunday, March 8. Fishing is to take place in the Tasman Bay only; this gives you a huge area from the south side of French pass and inside a line from separation point to Greville Harbour. Not in the marine reserve. This event could not be run without the generous

sponsors that support it and the hard-working committee behind the scenes. Please make sure you support the sponsors and honour the guide-lines of the competition, and if you are the team that takes out the Tasman Bay Snapper Classic Champion Cup, feel free to brag as much as you like. Entry into the competition can be done by fill-

ing out a form online at http://www.tasmanbay-snapperclassic.co.nz/2015-tbsc-register-here.html with a low fee of $200. Entries close 11pm, March 5, so get in now as late entries won’t be counted, and payment in full must be received no later than Friday, March 6. Off to Special Olympics

Young Nelson basketballer, Sean Tremlett, is preparing to take on the best in the world at this year’s Spe-cial Olympics, which will be held in Los Angeles in July. The ex-Nayland College student played a little basketball at school, but it was not until much later that he decided to take it more seriously. The 26 year old, who has chronic epilepsy, was playing in a social bas-ketball team for people with special needs in Stoke, when a couple of mates saw him play and asked him to join the Nelson Special Olympics basketball team. From there, he went on to play for regional and national teams where coaches asked him to put his name forward for the New Zealand Spe-cial Olympics squad.“I was over the moon when I was named in the New Zealand Special Olympics basketball team,” says Sean.Over 7,000 athletes from 177 coun-tries compete in the televised Spe-cial Olympics. Sean is one of ten basketball play-ers in the team and the only athlete

from Nelson to represent New Zea-land at the games. Sean, who works for his Dad’s com-mercial cleaning business, trains six days a week in the gym and on the court, and follows a strict training and diet programme. He has just returned from a two day camp in Wellington where he trained five hours a day.“Exercise helps me mentally with my epilepsy, it is a great way to meet new people and have fun,” says Sean. A quiz night will be held at Broad-green Intermediate School on Sat-urday, March 21, with all proceeds going towards the New Zealand Special Olympics team. Prizes for the night have been donated by many local businesses including Mitre 10 Mega, Lambrettas and there is a signed Nelson Giants sin-glet on offer. Sean would like to thank the people of Nelson for get-ting behind him.

Now is the time to pull out the fish-ing rod from your shed and fill up the chilly bin with ice, as the snap-per are biting. The fish have just finished spawn-ing and are now coming in closer to shore to feed up for the winter. This, along with a significant change in the water temperature, has made for optimum snapper-fishing con-ditions.Fishing guide Troy Dando says the snapper should keep feeding for the rest of the month. “You will generally catch snapper in the wider bay during this time and fishing around scallop beds and the shallows of the back beach at Tahu-nanui are ideal spots,” says Troy. He recommends stray lining or ledger rigs, and using pilchards or squid tentacles as bait.Barry Bird, from Seabird Charters Nelson, runs day fishing and diving trips within the bay and has been catching good sized snapper over

the past week “There have been plenty of snap-per off the Boulder Bank and Cape Souci lately,” says Barry.

It's been a stint to remember for Nelson lawn bowler Barbara McGregor, winning two titles in as many weeks, the second bringing up her 30th centre title overall.Barbara, a member of United Bowling Club, won the Bowls Nelson Centre Women's Singles Championship at the United Club last weekend.Sponsored by the Speight's Ale House, the competition was contested by 12 players from around Nelson. Barbara held off the challenge of club-mate Kirsten Griffin in the final, taking home the Orma Carter Trophy.Just a week later Barbara was back at it, when she was the skip for the United Bowling Club tri-ples team that won the Nelson Centre Triples on Sunday. She was said to be delighted with the double.

The Orma Carter Trophy was presented to Barbara McGregor, right, by Janis Reynolds, president of Bowls Nelson.

There is sure to be plenty of mud, sweat and tears when Nelson’s first-ever organised obstacle course race is held at Happy Valley in April. The Wairua Warrior race is organised by Stoke-based Wairua Mud Rookies Obstacle Racing Club, with help from Sport Tasman. The club, who competed in the Tough Mud-der race in Auckland last year, found there weren’t any ob-stacle course races around our region, so decided to organise one themselves. The event consists of a 6km race for beginners and a 12km tougher version for more seri-ous competitors. The course over undulating terrain has a range of natural and man-made obstacles involving mud, water, walls, ropes and barbed wire. Wairua Mud Rookies Obsta-cle Racing Club President, Greg Witika, says the race is designed to be challenging but achievable, and has some-thing for everyone. “All kinds of sports people with different fitness levels can participate in this event, from runners to walkers, to gym goers, there is

no other event that puts all dif-ferent kinds of sports into one”, says Greg.Anyone over the age of 16 can compete as an individual or as part of a team, and so far they’ve received entries from rugby clubs, local colleges and businesses. It aims to attract around 500 competitors, in-cluding a team from Australia.“It is a good way to have some fun and it is an ideal team-building exercise. The great thing is that as an individual you may not be able to get over

an eight foot wall, but as a team you can definitely get over the wall. In this race complete strangers are going to help you out along the way,” says Greg. The Wairua Warrior obstacle race will be held at Happy Val-ley, Cable Bay Rd, Nelson, on April 11, with all proceeds go-ing towards the Life Education Trust. Sport Tasman is accept-ing race registrations at www.wairuawarrior.co.nz. For more info on the race, contact Shar-ron Martin at qualitypaintand [email protected].
