The course was slightly new but the result was still the same – lots and lots of mud.Tasman School’s annual Muddy Buddy mud run attracted another large group of competitors, who

ran, crawled and slid their way through thick mud in the Moutere Inlet on Sunday morning. The future of the event remains up in the air with the school un-sure whether they will get council

consent to run it in the same place next year. Everyone who took part seemed to enjoy themselves with many at the finish line saying that it “needs to continue”.

Charles Shaw, Nelson.

“No, I live in Nelson so most days I use my bike, except when I’ve got to deliver some-thing or pick something up that I can’t do on my bike.”

Gwen Thompson, Richmond.

“No, I live in Richmond so I don’t come in here very often but when I do I just put my money in the meter.”

Robyn Deane, Tahuna.

“No, but I do think it is ridic-ulous, that’s why people are choosing to go out to Rich-mond. I often ride my bike in for that reason.”

Michael McDonald, Nelson.

“No I haven’t, I put money in the meter because I think the costs of parking here in Nelson are really reasonable compared with the rest of New Zealand.”

Police say they are disappointed at the behaviour of motorcycle gang members and their associates over the weekend, with one rider clocked doing 104km per hour in a 50km zone.Police issued more than 50 infringement notices to members of the group, the majority for speed, care-less driving or riding on the wrong class of licence. They were in town for a group ride on Saturday. One rider travelling to the event was caught travel-ling at twice the speed limit. He received a roadside suspension and will face court action.A further three riders received roadside suspensions for riding on the wrong class of licence. They were re-quired to arrange for someone else to ride their bike.Three vehicles were also impounded over the week-end.Police say they kept a close watch on the visiting gang members and their associates for the duration of their visit, to ensure they complied with the law.

Schools turn purple for fundraiserSchools around Nelson turned pur-ple on Friday for the annual Purple Cake Day.Now in its fourth year, Purple Cake Day is a charity event set up by the Kenbe La Charitable Foundation Trust to support children all over the world so they can receive the education needed to break the pov-erty cycle and create better futures for themselves and their family. At Enner Glynn School, parents baked cup cakes which were then iced by Year 6 students and sold to the rest of the school. There was also a mufti day.Other events were organised across the city, with most of the action tak-ing part in local schools, although there was a “go purple” yoga class held as well.

MAN wiTh NUN-chUkS: A man has been charged with possessing an offensive weapon following an inci-dent in the Abraham Heights area of Nelson yesterday.Police received calls from concerned members of the public who had seen the

man with a bow and ar-row and nunchuks, about 10.30am. Police contained the area before the man was taken into custody.

TrAfAlgAr cENTrE: An annoucement about the closed Trafalgar Centre will be made at 3.30pm today. To read it visit www.nelson weekly.co.nz. The centre wasclosed in December due to

its risk in an earthquake. Councillors discussed the closure behind closed doors on Thursday. Last week the council eased strengthen-ing requirements from no less than 67% of new build-ing standard (NBS) to no less than 34%. The Trafalgar Centre is 25-30% at the new southern end, 20-25% in the main section and 15 % at the northern end.

Changes to wood burner rules unlikelyPeople hoping to have the ban on their wood burners reversed this winter may want to think again before stocking up on fire wood, as it’s unlikely any significant changes to the current wood burner rules will be made before winter.Nelson City Council’s planning and regulatory committee chair, Brian McGurk, says the council is taking the issue “very se-riously” and is expecting a report from council staff around possible changes to the rules around wood burners in early May. But he acknowledged that any signifi-cant changes are unlikely before winter, with changes to the plan expected to take at least a year to process. That could leave dozens of Nelson fami-lies in areas like Washington Valley, Bishopdale and Victory facing another cold winter, after many were forced to shut off their wood burn-ers last year due to rules around the Nelson Air Quality Plan.Brian says the wood burner issue is “top of mind”

for many Nelsonians and while he wanted to see some changes, the council had to be mindful to the gains made in air quality since the plan was introduced more than a decade ago. “The options will need to be fair, both financial-ly and socially equitable. We don’t want people

living in cold homes because they don’t have an affordable option.”He says a review needs to be taken with “care” but he still hoped there would be some progress before winter, even if it was only expanding the number of new technologies around wood burners that people can install in their homes.Nelson Grey Power president Neville Male, says the organisation will contin-ue its “crusade” to have wood burners

approved for use before this winter. He says it’s especially important considering another rise in power prices has been announced. A review of the council’s wood burner policy was annouced last December after a discussion between Brian and mayor Rachel Reese.

lighT NElSoN: It’s all go for Light Nelson, with the announcement that the Nelson Events Management Com-mittee will support the event with a sig-nificant grant from the council’s events marketing and development fund. Last year Light Nelson attracted a crowd of 16,000 to the Queens Garden over three nights in July. Light Nelson 2014 is scheduled for July 11-13.

gigATowN: Since Nelson Weekly first broke news of Nelson’s bid to win the Gigatown competition, meaning super fast speed broadband for the city, lo-cals have rallied. The dedicated group behind Nelson’s quest has seen the city rise to the top four in the standings, a huge effort. Points are earned from eve-ry Tweet, Facebook or Instragram post that includes “#gigatownnsn”.

SAxToN ovAl UpgrADE: Urgent repairs to Saxton Oval’s drainage sys-tem will ensure the stadium is match-fit for future international cricket matches, says Nelson City Council. The remedia-tion work to fix significant issues with the oval’s ground drainage will cost $242,000 and is necessary to ensure the oval is ready to host the Cricket World Cup next year. Work will likely begin in mid-April.

Explosives used to free caver

All go for trolley derby

Nelson cavers used all their skills and ex-perience to rescue a trapped caver over the weekend, even resorting to explosives.Christchurch man Lindsay Main, 62, was with his wife Alice Shanks and 16 other cavers in Mt Arthur over the weekend, when he got stuck in a 15 metre long tight section.Constable Malcolm York, search and res-cue incident controller, told the New Zea-land Herald that Alice returned to the un-derground cavern, about 60m in length,

when it she realised her husband could not fit through the tight section.“He was able to back-track out of the squeeze into the cavern.“The other rescuers were able to pass ex-tra clothing through, equipment, food for them to be comfortable for the night,’’ Malcolm says.Explosives were then used to widen the squeeze on Sunday, he said. “Very precise, very small charges were just able to break up the rock that was block-

ing the access. The couple were given high protection gear and were able to move a good 60 metres away from the blast.Nelson caver and friend of the pair, Bruce Mutton, helped in the rescue and says the pair returned to his house to warm up af-ter the rescue. He said they were in good spirits and were uninjured, other than a few bruised ribs. The couple were planning to return to Christchurch after their car was retrieved from Mt Arthur.

It’s that time of the year when hundreds of daredevils in trolleys race down Collingwood St, and Nayland Primary School student Logan Andrews can’t wait.Logan will be entered in the zoomers class of the Robertson’s Collingwood St Trolley Derby this Saturday, starting from 10am.The trolley was built by some students at his school around four years ago and was raced as a school trolley. He says the trolley derby is “fun” and he got to race in front of friends and family last year. The trolley derby is split into four age categories – nippers, zoomers, sprinters and rockets.

Couple escape from burning shipThe story of an Auckland couple escaping their burning boat off Pepin Island has been the talk of the town and today new photos emerged showing what was left of the ship, just before it sank.A 40-foot launch, which was home to an Auckland couple Gary and Carol Ardern, sank last Wednesday after it caught fire. They escaped in the nick of time, with their cat.The boat, the Tarapunga, was

built in 1942 in the United States and worked for many years as a harbour defence launch in the United States. It served as a harbour defence launch for the New Zealand Navy and it was also used for extensive survey work all around New Zealand.Volunteers and organisations came to rescue the burning boat, including the coastguard, fire service, police and private and commercial vessels.

A $4.7 million project to build a pest-proof fence around the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is on target, after it was granted $1.25 million last week. The sanctuary trust is now just $200,000 short of its fundraising target, which will signal the start of construction. Brook Waimarama Sanc-tuary Trust chair Dr Dave Butler says there was ela-tion from the trust over the Lottery Grants Board award of $1.25 million, which would be echoed by the huge group of vol-unteers and supporters of the project. “This is a ringing valida-tion of the Brook Sanc-tuary’s national signifi-cance, and an affirmation of the trust’s vision and robust planning,” he says. “It also recognises all the hard work members have put in towards re-

alising the vision and the strong support for the project from our strategic partners and the wider community.”

Dave says the $1.25 mil-lion grant gets the sanctu-ary to “within arm’s reach” of starting construction on the pest-proof fence, but the trust is firm in its resolve to build the fence without incurring debt. “There is now just a $200k gap left to reach our $4.7m target and we have other major funding ap-plications already lodged and being prepared,” he says. “We’ll also be step-ping up the ‘Get Behind the Fence’ campaign.” Dave says if the Nelson community, the Top of

the South region, and the nation as a whole maintained their support he was confident there would be a start on the fence construction by the middle of this year.

A Mad Butcher store is coming to Stoke. While the original Mad Butcher, Sir Peter Leitch, is known as a huge rugby league fan, the Nelson branch of the business he founded will open in the soon-to-be empty Stoke Rugby clubrooms.News of the move is yet to be made official, but sources have told Nelson Weekly that the new Mad Butcher store will open in the middle of the year in the Stoke Rugby club rooms on Songer St.It is understood space for two other busi-nesses will be included in the new develop-ment.

The Stoke Rugby Club put their 40 year old clubrooms up for sale last year will move out of the building this weekend. The club is hoping to work with Nelson City Coun-cil to build a multi-use facility on Green-meadows and has been keen to sell its stake in the aging building.Stoke Rugby Club operation manager Kim Biggs, says the club will operate from of-fice space in Stoke, while after-match func-tions would be held in the Turf Hotel for the 2014 season.Mad Butcher has 39 stores around the country.

Marama Bevan has been chosen as the win-ner of this year's education grant from Sorop-timist International of Waimea. It's the second year the group has run the grant and they say they'd like to see it become an annual scheme to help local women fur-ther their education.Marama Bevan, was one of nine who applied. She is in her second year at NMIT, studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Marketing. This grant will allow her to pursue her dream of completing her degree, while taking away some of the added financial pressures that come with such a decision of returning to full time study. "I’m very grateful for receiving this scholarship and hope other women are inspired to follow their dreams.” Soroptimist member Helen Bywater, says the group were really impressed with the quality of applicants.

Nearly every fortnight between the end of this month and August, Richmond Mall will host a mini concert as excitement builds for the 2014 Rock da House event.Thirty-three schools from across the region have confirmed their place in the Richmond Mall sponsored event – the largest school music ini-tiative in the Top of the South. The initiative is about encouraging participa-tion, developing talent and creating opportu-nities, and is coordinated by musical directors John Phillips and Paulette Nott, along with Dave Pritchard, Leallen Andersen and Monika Bur-rows who represent some of the region’s schools. Before the final three concerts in Motueka on August 18, 19 and 20, choirs, duos and soloists will perform in the mall food court nearly every second Thursday evening for about an hour.Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says a schedule for the mini concerts would be con-

firmed in the coming week, and she was excited about the opportunity to be involved with Rock da House. “We’re a community mall and the schools are the centre of the community. It cre-ates a bit of excitement for our customers,” she says. “It looks like we’ll have a mini concert eve-ry fortnight and that’ll be between 6:30pm and 7:30pm in the food court, starting in March.”Last year’s show in Nelson drew a total audience of 3500 over the three nights, making it a huge success, and musical director John Phillips was excited to have the mall on board for 2014. “The mall is becoming a bit of a hub for us for little performances like family duos, and there’s a ros-ter of schools coming down,” he says. “It’s fresh and funky and everyone is getting in behind it.” Another new initiative this year is the develop-ment of the Richmond Mall Rock da House re-gional choir – an auditioned choir of about 60 kids with exceptional talent.

There are a number of reasons why people become volunteers, but for Maureen Ashton it was to “give a helping hand in the community”, and she’s never looked back. The Stoke woman has been helping with Meals on Wheels for the past 17 years. Tuesday is her day. She travels to the pick-up area and then spends about half an hour going around distributing lunches and desserts to those on the list. This week marks the annual appeal week for the New Zealand Red Cross and they are currently looking for more volunteers to help with Meals on Wheels, community transport and the community visitors service.Maureen never expected to be a volunteer for 17 years, and wasn’t even aware it had been that long. “I had to find out. The time just seems to have flown past. I enjoy it and I enjoy the contact with the more elderly.”Richmond couple Gordon and Vivienne Moody also help out with Meals on Wheels, and

have been doing so for the past 24 years. “I quite enjoy it. You get to know the clients you see, so well,” says Gordon. When the Moodys signed up to become volunteers, it was mainly Gordon’s role and Vivienne would help out when he couldn’t. But now it seems to have gone the other way and Gordon says he’s the “emergency driver”.Even though they’ve been volunteering for nearly a quarter of a century, it’s

something both Gordon and Vivienne don’t plan to stop any time soon. “Society runs on volunteers. I spent 20 years in Scouts and that’s when I realized everybody volunteers for things.”Other than the one time they “embarrassingly” forgot, Gordon says the funniest moment was probably when he accidentally ran over the dessert. To become a volunteer, contact Amy Wilson on 546 5012.

Nelson Community Night Shelter supervisor Edward An-drews is just a little bemused after receiving a presentation at the Nelson's All Saints Church on Sunday.Edward received the award from Nelson City mayor Ra-chael Reese for spending 20 years working at the shelter on Vanguard St. The shelter is run by the trustees of the Anglican Church parish and members of the Society of St Vincent de Paul and provides an even-ing meal and bed for men who can't find permanent accom-modation. Although Edward has helped hundreds of the city's homeless get back on their feet during that time, he insists he is sim-ply doing his job. And the com-mitted Christian says without hesitation, there is nothing else he would rather be doing than working at the shelter."I wanted to do something to help others and serve the Lord and I'm lucky to have the op-portunity to do that," Edward says. "I am in the right place doing the right thing - I feel like I am a missionary in my own country."Edward, who dedicated his life to helping others after becom-ing a Christian 33 years ago,

says he applied for the super-visor's job at the night shelter after a conversation with Vicar Tony Andrews and his wife Helen. He had previously been involved with the Prison Fel-lowship at Mt Eden and United Maori Mission in Auckland and wanted to continue work-ing for Christian charities when he moved to Nelson in 1993.Although Edward says it can be a tough job, the rewards are immense. He says he gets a real thrill when he sees some of the shelters former residents who have turned their lives around."I meet quite a few people who stayed at the shelter and have got themselves sorted out. They

come up to me in the streets and say "thanks for helping me" - it's nice to know I was a small part of that."Edward says he also enjoys the support he gets from the All Saints Church and the wider community. All Saints vicar and trustee Simon Martin says Sunday's ceremony was "a very moving tribute" to Edward."It was a very nice service and what started with rowdy ap-plause soon became loud foot stomping and cheering. He is very much a part of the fabric of the church and its family but we also realise we share him with the community."

Saxton Stadium:Very wrong that they didn't put seats in Saxton at the start. Existing

sports shouldn't have to change to accom-modate the big events. Existing are bread and butter long term, don't diminish their value! Jay Park.

No it isn't fair, it was built for sport and should stay that way. Coun-

cil should get their act together and start

making plans for a venue suitable to host visiting acts, etc. What is wrong with them, it has been a bone of contention for a while now. Brenda Kenny.

Boo. If you live in Nelson, who se-riously wants to go all the way out

to Saxton for an event, have a few drinks then have to fight your way into a taxi and pay over $25 to get back home? No thank you. Lulu Armstrong.

At the end of the day it's a business, long term rev-

enue will always take precedence. They're going to earn less because of less "available slots" to sell. James Burnby.

Stoke fire:Oh no, this is terrible, re-ally hope no one is hurt....

Lisa Nicol.

My hubby there fighting it. Very sad. Ashley Dodd.

Those poor people. My thoughts are with them ...

that's horrible. Amir Corina.

Brook Camp:Hey, I hear there's a place right in town close to all

the shops, movies, cafes, bars, that everyone could move to. It's coun-cil owned, just put your money in the parking meter, probably work out cheaper in the long run. Its in New St. You know the old artery

site. I'm sure Mr Rainey won't mind. Nelsonian (via website).

It's such lovely place, I wish they would invest more in it to raise the

standards a little higher and give it real go...Has great potential when there are moun-tain bike events and in joint promotion with the sanctuary/DOC for school groups etc. A proper marketing/promotional ef-fort could turn it around and make it really something. Rainbow (via website).

The brook camp is one of the last places remaining in this area where

one can actually say they are camping in nature. The Maitai camp is on a main road and affords no privacy like the Brook - per-haps the council would be better off mar-keting the camp better or close the Maitai one and merge them both. The Brook camp is far superior for holidays - or does it have another agenda for what is a lucra-tive and prime real estate? The Nelson area is becoming more and more devoid of nat-ural environments to holiday in and you can't call Tahuna a natural environment being so close to the airport, even though the beach is right there. Nothing beats the irons of the forest and a nice dip in a river hole which the brook has in abundance. unity1nz (via website).

I don't think our rates should sub-sidise these people's cheap living. It

is a burden. The residents have other op-tions available to them. Residents saying they can't leave because of their structures is a very poor excuse. Meanwhile my rates have increased around $600 in the last 6

years and this is more than likely one of the reasons for those increases. Close it. Mat Krahagen.

Feel bad for those people who live there, it's their lives! The coincil

need to do this but maybe they should be giving assistance somehow...as they should for all Nelson's residents when they make decisions that drastically alter peoples lives. Rayon Mackenzie.

They have the option to move to other campgrounds. Why should

ratepayers be paying for them to live cheaply. Everyone else has to pay their rates and higher rents. Alison Beare.

It is a tough call. We all complain our rates are to high, but when

the council make a move to reduce a los-ing enterprise and it effects people we feel uncomfortable. Perhaps we need to under-stand where the costs are? John Sauer.

I lived there for a year and a half, while I saved for my first house.

It is a good housing option for the resi-dents. Nothing flash, and in winter us-ing the amenities at night is rather cold. I think this is another example of profits before people. Greed on the council's part. For those who think "why should the rate payers subsidise this business", and want it closed, then why not close all sports grounds? Close all libraries? Close council owned swimming pools? Close any thing the council owns, that does not return a profit? Wayne McMahon.

The Brightwater Wine and Food Festival was a huge success for everyone involved and provid-ed a great platform to launch next year’s event. The festival produced a record crowd and received some great feedback from both the public and stall-holders which means that it will definitely be back as an annual event. Next year’s date has already been set so be sure to keep February 15th free in your calendar and with improvements already in the planning stages, you can be sure that next year’s festival will be even better than before. Or-ganisers from the Richmond Rotary Club are hoping to make minor changes to the festival to benefit both the public and stallholders such as, improving access, providing more shade. Up-grades to the event are yet to be decided but may include putting a bigger emphasis on the chil-dren’s area. “We wish to put out a massive thanks to the people that attended, all of the people that contributed and helped, the stallholders and of course to the sponsors,” says Richmond Rotary’s Kevin Gear. “We want people to know that the

those who are going to be the beneficiaries will benefit from the event. We haven’t got a final profit figure yet but it was very successful and we

will be in touch with those beneficiaries directly as soon as we have the final figures.” The money raised from this year’s fes-tival will go towards the Malborough Res-cue Helicopter, Wan-derers Sports Club, Brightwater Rural Fire Force and Rich-

mond Volunteer Fire Brigade. The Brightwater Wine and Food Festival was put on by the Rotary Club of Richmond with the support of sponors Fertilizer NZ Ltd, Goldpine, Colourplus, Knapps Lawyers, Middle-Earth Winery, Waimea Week-ly, Nelosn Weekly and Nelson More FM. A big thank you is also needed for Colourplus Nelson, Colourplus Richmond, Haven Realty offices in Nelson and Richmond, Everyman Records in Nelson, Village Cycles in Richmond, Avanti Plus Richmond, Specsavers in Richmond Mall, Sprig and Fern Brightwater and the Brightwater Mobil Garage who acted as ticket outlets for the event.

Nelson Young Professionals (NYP) is a fantastic organization for the next generation of leaders and decision-makers in the Nelson region. NYP brings together young professionals in an effort to build on their skills and knowledge through the generation of social networks and lessons learned from those who have previously suc-ceeded. NYP was established in 2009 to foster cross industry and cross pro-fession relationships, so that members are able to develop both personally and professionally. Although the number of members is about 200, the focus for NYP this year is to make more people aware of the group and the great opportuni-

ties that the organization can offer to young professionals in the region. “Last year we really focused on gain-ing momentum, becoming active and getting out there again. NYP is really useful for making contacts. Other networking opportunities are based mainly for senior level partners or as-sociates. There isn’t really an opportu-nity for networking at a junior level. By having our events we are network-ing at the lower level,” says committee president Michelle Byczkow. As serious as this may sound, the most important thing about NYP is having fun and creating new relationships. The NYP committee is constantly organizing events where their mem-

bers can socialize, as well as take away valuable information to help further their careers in their chosen profession. These events range from guest speakers and BBQ’s, to formal balls.Their guest speakers are all professionals in their own field and provide useful information on things including health and fitness and how your body language can affect other people. A new sponsorship series will see the senior partners

and associates of the sponsoring businesses sharing their knowledge on their own expe-riences. These talks are broad in their topics to ensure their relevance to a number of peo-ple, yet focused enough that the information suits the situations of those attending. The committee tries to hold one large event every month and next week they will be holding a BBQ in the Vines at Kaimira Estate.Between speakers and major events, NYP also have monthly meetings at Rhythm and Brown, where they enjoy a social drink and a catch up. Although the target market for NYP is those in the first 15 years of their profes-sion, the term professional is used very loose-ly. NYP applies to any profession and this is what makes it such a diverse and interesting organization. It includes lawyers, dentists, ac-countants and doctors as well as dental assis-tants, teachers and office assistants.A membership fee of $20 is charged which goes towards the events and the general run-ning of the organization. If you are interested in joining Nelson Young Professionals, or are seeking more information, then look on their website at nyp.co.nz or check them out on Fa-cebook.

After 22 years in traffic enforcement, I have changed from issuing tickets to those that get it wrong to teaching people how to do it right! The drivers most at risk of being involved in a crash are restricted drivers within six months of passing the practical test. The restricted licence test has been made more difficult to pass, so you must demonstrate a higher standard of driving before entering the most vulnerable stage of your driving career.Whether it’s training from the very beginning, or brushing up before a test, I can help. I can teach you to drive and I can correct those little bad driving habits you have picked up. Professional driver training is important in preparing for any test, and I can help with Learner drivers, preparing for the Full Licence Test, or any overseas conversion training. I also present training courses for older drivers through Age Concern, and conduct on-road driver assessments for older drivers. If you have learning difficulties, English is not your first language, or you are on a benefit, I run free Learner Licence Assistance Courses at the YMCA. 20 years ago, Mark Allsopp started Paint Co in a small lock up at the Nelson port. After moving to their current location in 1997 and the expansion of the business in 2006, Paint Co has become the ultimate in paint suppliers. TAKING TO THE AIR“King” Tom Newman was determined to be the first to fly into his home region. At the age of 62, he joined another pilot, “Shorty” Fowler. They successfully crossed Cook Strait, but ran low on

fuel and had to land in Marsden’s paddock next to St Barnabas Church in Stoke. Afterwards they celebrated along with locals at the Turf Hotel. The landing site in Stoke is now marked by a plaque.

DESIGN & BUILD-FACTOR

DESIGN & BUILD-FACTOR

Love your location,

but tired of your house?

• Wednesday, February 12, my birthday. I wake to a lovely day, and plan accordingly. All activi-ties will be pleasant and exactly what I want to do. Not a problem. The day moves along swim-mingly and then I took a step backward, to ad-mire something. That’s all it took. Just one lit-tle step and I went crashing down really hard. There was pain, and a feeling that something was wrong. One glance showed a wrist in the shape of a caterpillar on the incline. And it wouldn’t straighten out, no matter what.• Three hours later, we return from hospital. My arm in a very solid cast, and with instructions to be careful because it was a bad break. My arm would be in plaster for six weeks. Oh well. Noth-ing for it but to do as I’m told, and behave myself.• Our house has wrap around verandas, so it is easy to find a pleasant spot to sit and view the garden, and that has been my daily activity. This garden is lovely in late winter with various col-oured hellebores enjoying themselves. However, I’m thinking the garden could be improved dur-ing the summer season with colourful fuchsias So that is first on the Things To Do list. There are two birdbaths in this space as well, both sup-porting empty pots. I quite like an empty pot or two about the place, and these two didn’t bother me. But I am thinking to make a change there. Dianne, who works with us in Blenheim, told me of a bird station that she has made. It is suc-cessful and so simple to make. She has used a hanging wire planter, which had been lined with coconut fibre. Inside the planter she placed a plastic saucer, the kind that you use to catch wa-ter under a flower pot. This is used as the meal tray for the bird food. It is highly successful she tells me, with parent birds bringing their fami-

lies to feed yearly. So I have thought to remove one of the empty pots, and restore the birdbath to its original purpose. Then the birds can take a bath straight after breakfast if they want to and start the day with a clean slate. So that’s second on The List.• Marie Shelly cleared a space so that a lovely tree trunk is visible from my breakfast spot. I am enjoying that, and have gone a little further to think that some foliage at ground level could be removed to allow some dappled sunlight to filter through. During this tidy up, it was discov-ered that an evergreen azalea had decided that enough was enough, and stopped living. It’s a shame, because over the years the plant had de-veloped an attractive layered shape. But all is not lost. It was decided that a gentle climber should be placed at the foot of the plant to twine through the branches. I am on the hunt for something suitable. Maybe it should be planted in a pot to keep it safe. Task number three for The List.• Across from the garden and right where I am sitting, is a veranda post with the rose Madame Alfred Carriere braced against it. Very enjoy-able. But the planting at the base is not that great. I had planted a lonicera to twine through the rose to create some fragrance. But the hon-eysuckle didn’t want to be bothered, and hung around at the feet of the rose, along with a few violets. Not a satisfactory planting. Madame Al-fred can stay where she is, but everything else is to be removed, and replaced with a collection of bearded irises in generous sized pots. I have the irises, but not the pots.• Tasks number four and five loom up, and I have not even finished breakfast yet! It’s going to be a very busy six weeks ahead for me it seems!

Many older persons in the Nel-son/Tasman community will be dismayed by the news that power prices are to increase. However it doesn’t come as a shock to most as power prices are rising every year now and there is almost an attitude of “grin and bear it” starting to pre-vail among consumers.Although these latest increases might seem to many to be small they still represent a line charge increase of be-tween 3 per cent and 8 per cent and for those older people struggling to keep their heads above water this can be appropriately called cold comfort. The main reason for the increase this time is because transmission charges are going up largely as a re-sult of a national grid upgrade cost-ing $2 billion.

Obviously the national grid and lo-cal networks must remain reliable but at what cost? Can Transpower assure consumers that every part of the cost to carry out these major works is subject to strict budgetary controls and restraint to rein in ex-

penditure wherever pos-sible?Network Tasman CEO Wayne Mackey makes the optimistic statement that following this price increase “transmission prices will be flat to fall-ing in real terms and any further increases going forawrd will be below in-flation.” But I ask: “Has Transpower given him this assurance?” Lets

wait and see.Meantime Nelson Grey Power will be continuing its crusade to have woodburners approved for use be-fore the coming winter.

Help us build it!

By Brian Egerton, Habitat directorWhat most of us take for granted.Recently, I went to speak to a local group about who Habitat is and what we do. As I was trying to find the meeting room, one of the staff at the venue spotted my ‘Habitat’ shirt, gave me a great big smile, stuck out her hand and introduced herself. She had recently moved into one of our new houses and was absolutely delighted with her new home. She said that her children were also loving it and were already in better health than they had been while living in their previous house. I found that amazing – not the fact so much but because I had intended to tell a similar story about another Habitat family during my upcoming presentation. This other family had two boys, one of whom was often sick and requiring visits to the doctor, and the husband had asthma which meant he was often off work. Their previous rental house was cold and damp, didn’t keep the wind out and there was mould growing in numerous places! One of the ceilings was so damp, it was like wet Weetbix – you could push your finger into it! Hardly a good environment for anybody, let alone a couple of young children. Their new Habitat house is warm, dry and the boys are hardly ever sick now, and the husband’s asthma is gone. As a result of that he has been able to keep a job and feels great as he knows he is now able to provide for his family. The benefits of a decent, warm and dry home are many-fold and the downstream health and social benefits are yet to be fully realised.

Nelson might be the oldest rugby club in the country, but its youngest members certainly have a big part to play – that’s where the club hopes to discover the next Tom Marshall, James Marshall or Shane Christie.Nelson has one of the biggest pools of JAB players, with 220 kids spread across 14 teams. The JAB competition runs from Under-6 grade through to Under-13s. After that the kids head into college teams before returning for senior rugby.Quentin Harwood, the club’s junior captain, is gearing up for another busy season of rugby, starting from May 10. “In the Nelson Bays area there are three clubs that have around that 220 kids each mark and we’re part of that,” he says. “We’ll be expecting about 14 teams again once we’ve gone through all of the registrations.”The official registration day was held last Saturday but players are still welcome to sign up for Nelson Rugby Club and can do so by calling Quentin on 027 302 3508.From there each player is put into a team depending on their age group and it will be up to coaches to decide when training will commence ahead of the first round of matches.Under-6 and Under-7 are the two youngest grades in the competition and therefore play rippa rugby. All home matches will be played at Neale Park.In the senior club this year, Nelson is fielding its senior A and B teams again for 2014. The senior A team has been the most successful in Nelson over the past decade and last year it continued its top form, winning the Tasman Trophy.Senior club captain Bruce Henderson says the club is aiming to defend its title and secure a top four place in the Nelson Bays club competition. “The boys have already spoken about that and they want to nail down that top four spot and then push from there to win the comp.”He says with a number of the club’s stars playing Super 15 rugby there are a few gaps in the team, says Bruce, which will be coached again by Murray Scott. Murray will be assisted by Kade Heke and Robbie Malneek, who will hope to join the squad in the second round after recovering from surgery. The senior B squad already has around 25 players at training and Bruce says the team is hoping to win the competition after starting well but fading last year. “We’re really happy with the guys who have turned up and they’re all really keen but the travel for the B’s boys does test the squad,” he

says. “But they’re raring to go, it should be good year for them.”Anyone interested in playing rugby either senior grade can give Bruce a call on 027 544 9595 or turn up at Neale Park at 5.50pm on either Tuesday or Thursday night.

Every rugby team at Nayland College will now play under the Stoke Rugby Club banner, unless it’s for a one-off first XV match.Having withdrawn from the Press Cup at the end of last season, 2014 is expect-ed to bring a new dawn for Nayland College, who will now enter a team in the local under-18 competition instead. But in that grade, and in under-16, un-der-15 and under-14, the team will be now representing Stoke and wearing a red uniform.Nayland College’s director of sport Mark Cochrane, says there needed to be some change after the withdrawal from the Press Cup, and the decision to link up with Stoke was the right way forward. “Stoke is a community team, and rather than having Nayland separate from that, this is now a Stoke team with all of the Nayland boys playing for them,” he says. “This is a joint venture and we wanted to create a pathway from JAB all the way up to senior rugby.”Because each player is now represent-ing a club, it would be possible to attract players from other schools or those who have left school – as long as they fit into the age bracket.

The move also comes just months after the entire Stoke under-13 team enrolled at Nelson College this year, meaning Nayland is unable to field an under-14 team. “By having it at Stoke, it means we can attract some of those boys back and that’s the aim.”Stoke’s operations manager Kim Biggs, says the timing is perfect with Nayland experiencing a shortage in player num-bers.

“We can step in and see if we can do something together. We just don’t want players to drop out of the system basi-cally,” she says. “There tends to be a massive drop off in sport when kids hit college, so we just want to stem that tide.”The new relationship between school and club has already been on show, with the under-18 side playing a pre-season friendly against the senior squad at Nayland College last weekend.

This weekend’s ASB Youth League final at Trafalgar Park will be the biggest football game to be played in the region in more than a decade, and the captain of the home side is confident that the Nelson Marlborough Falcons will be the ones celebrating come full-time.Coey Turipa will lead the New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Marlborough Falcons against Auckland City this Saturday in just their second season of national league football, and he says the prospect of playing in a national final hasn’t sunk in yet. “I think that when the first whistle blows against Auckland City then it’ll hit us. We’ll really know we’re in a final and we’re a really good chance of winning a final and in front of a home crowd,” he says. The Falcons won eight straight games to book a place in the ASB Youth League final with two rounds to spare. Since qualifying,

coach Davor Tavich has given nearly every single player a run and decided to rest most of the senior players during that spell. Nelson lost to YoungHeart Manawatu and Canterbury United in those games but it shouldn’t be a worry for a team that managed to scrap out wins when it counted, even in the most unlikely situations.Auckland City, the defending champions, haven’t lost a game all season and enter the final with an eight win, two draw record. Ross McPhie, who actually played for Nelson Suburbs and scored a goal in the Chatham Cup when he was just 14 years old, is a member of their squad.Coey expects Auckland City to play a similar style to Team Wellington – a side with talented individuals across the park. The ASB Youth League final kicks off at 1pm at Trafalgar Park this Saturday, with a Nelson Youth XI taking on a Marlborough Youth XI in a curtain raiser from 10am.

Only a fool breaks the two second rule."Remember that line next time you're driving and have a check on your own following dis-tance behind the vehicle in front of you.My own experience driving around the roads across Nelson Bays is that a huge number of drivers are following far too close behind the vehicle in front.Everyone on the road thinks they're an ex-pert driver, but the reality is that expert driv-ers know that they won't have time to take evasive action if they are following less than two seconds behind the vehicle in front and something unexpected happens.Virtually every day my staff have to attend nose to tail crashes that are avoidable. Even low speed crashes in peak hour traffic can have devastating effects on people's lives. It's your responsibility to be able to stop safe-ly in the space you have in front of you.The two second rule is really simple precau-tion to take that could save your day.On another topic, I would like to talk briefly about domestic family violence. My experi-ences as a police officer tells me that it affects people in all communities at all socio-eco-nomic levels. Many types of pressures exist that adversely affect the family household. Partners have a right to argue, parents have a right to provide a verbal 'telling off ' to their children. Not-withstanding this, we need to ask ourselves, 'is the argument at an ok level?' Most of us will be able to tell the difference between a healthy argument or telling off and one that is escalating and inappropriate. If you hear the latter type of situation you need to call the police. I would rather my officers at-tended a job and found it to be low level than to be attending a more serious situation be-cause they were not alerted early enough!
