This course is led by an award-winning teaching team. We love design and obsess with exploring new ideas and new ways of making things. Through design, you will improve the quality of people’s lives by giving them a better place to live, work and play. You will work with our contacts in industry on live projects, such as Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen, and Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange, with real budgets, real sites, and to be built and enjoyed by the public. You will meet big names such as Will Alsop and Peter Cook, and network with our partners in the Hertfordshire Association of Architects. We also enjoy visiting our friends around the world, in such places as, Japan, Russia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and New York and look at beautiful architecture and design. International collaboration projects, studio visits and student exchange are part of the action-packed experience of the course.

• Interior Architecture and Design students have participated in live projects with a number of commercial partners including Letchworth Garden City urban regeneration, Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen, Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange, The Forum Hertfordshire, Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and St Albans Museums.

• The degree focuses on working with existing buildings and spaces and exploring different possibilities for habitation.

• The Interior Architecture and Design degree pursues a progressive and holistic teaching approach as we consider the design process as something non-linear or sequential (i.e. research first, design later).

BEng (Hons) Aerospace Systems Engineering with Pilot Studies

This unique course gives you the flexibility to pursue an engineering career designing aircraft from a pilot’s perspective or to further your training to become a commercial pilot.

You will study principles of flight and an introduction to aircraft systems and computer packages commonly used in the aerospace industry; you learn more about the design process and will have the opportunity for flying lessons at a local flying school; you will have the option to work for a company on placement; and you can increase your flying experience to satisfy the requirements for a NPPL as part of the Pilot Studies module as well as studying advanced aircraft systems normally used by commercial pilots.


• This BEng Honours degree course in Aerospace Systems Engineering with Pilot Studies places is a particular emphasis on the flying qualities from a pilot’s point of view.

• You will get the opportunity to gain a UK National Private Pilot’s Licence whilst doing your degree.

• The flying is offered locally at an attractively discounted rate.

Automotive Engineering with Motorsport BEng (Hons)

You will learn about the aerodynamics of high-speed vehicles, high-performance engine design testing and mapping, engine mapping, suspension, tyres and road holding. There is also the opportunity to be involved with the Class 200 Formula Student car, where you will work on developing the previous year’s Formula Student entry. In the following year of your course you will develop the specialist skills and knowledge of a motorsport engineer and you may choose to represent the University as a member of the Formula Student team.


• This BEng Honours in Automotive Engineering with Motorsport will give you the opportunity for hands-on motorsport from your first year onwards, if you wish by getting involved in the design, build and racing of a single-seater race car in the UK Formula Student Competition.

• Your studies will reflect the latest thinking in the industry as the School is supported by a Motor Industry Advisory Panel which includes representatives from many well–known automotive companies.

• Nearly every Formula One racing team has one of our graduates working in their design team, so your degree will open doors for you within the motorsport industry.
