MONEYMatters

Ask most married couples if their wedding day came in on budget and they’ll laugh and say “Almost”! We’ve discovered that our readers average spend for their wedding day is in the region of £20,356 (source from National Weddings Magazine market research March 2015 – March 2016). However, 52% of our readers actual spend was far in excess of that amount!

With the Venue, Dress and Honeymoon being the biggest budget-busters, staying within your budget can be diffi cult….. but it’s not impossible!

Start by doing your maths…..Together! Look at what money is coming into both of your bank accounts and then what’s going out! Work out how much you can comfortably save each month. Produce a spreadsheet of savings and if any family members are contributing, no matter how small, then add this to your total as well.

Once you have done this, it’s time to start researching. It’s never too early to start planning your wedding. Our research shows that 54% of our readers start planning their wedding in advance of 18 months of the wedding day, with 32% planning well over 2 years in advance and the other 14% are happy to plan and get married within one year.

Produce a list of what wedding services and products you really want on your wedding day. For example, apart from the obvious things like your dress, his suit and a venue, consider how you want your day to run. You may want to consider fi reworks (if your venue permits), a Magician or Childcare services etc.

My advice is to visit as many Wedding Fairs and Shows as possible and look through as many Wedding magazine and websites as possible. Magazines such as National Weddings Magazine and websites such as nwmag.co.uk are ideal as they showcase some amazing wedding services and products. These magazine and websites will give you all the necessary information and wedding service provider details.

Choose up to 3 companies for everything on your list and then take the average costs of these and place this cost against the product/service you require on your list. By the time you’ve completed your list, you will have a good idea of what your ideal wedding is going to cost you. You can then decide to save for a few years so you can have exactly what you want or cut back on a few things to fi t in with a budget you can successfully work to.

Financial Planning isn’t the most romantic part of wedding planning but it is the MOST important! Here’s how to get the Wedding you want within your budget….

TOP TIPGet yourself a Saving Jar.

Shop-4.co.uk have lovely ‘slogan jars’ – and they’re only

£4.00 each. Put one or two around the house and at the end

of each day, chuck in any loose change you have in your

bag or pockets. Get friends and family to do the same as

they pass it by! It’s a really eff ective way of saving money

and you hardly realise you’re doing it!

If you can put in £2.00 of loose change in the jar everyday

then in just one year you will have saved £712.00 – that’s a

fantastic amount to add to your wedding budget!

WEDDING TRENDSyou can create yourself

Whether you’re looking to have a ‘green wedding’, love the shabby chic trend or simply wanting to save the pennies, a lick of paint and some creative thought can go a long way in creating the perfect wedding. Up cycling expert, editor of All Round Creative Junkie and North East Blogger of the Year Cheryl Lumley shares her tips for adding that extra sparkle to a wedding without breaking the bank. Weddings have changed. We’re no longer constrained by hotel function rooms, roast chicken dinners and traditional wedding planners anymore. We want personal touches that show off our personalities: we want vintage tea parties, rustic country settings,

to wear converse with our wedding dresses and to dance in barns with bunting and hay bale seats. We are creating whole weekend events – mini festivals, almost. The traditional wedding rule book has gone and we now do whatever we want, hooray! While everyone wants their wedding to be amazing, we also don’t want to spend our life savings on just one weekend, no matter how magical. A few key trends for 2016 can be easily recreated on a budget with a little forward planning and creativity. A bit of clever up cycling and crafting can create a completely personal theme and save a lot of money in the process – money you can spend on a well-deserved honeymoon instead.

GoldMetallics, glitter and gold are opulent, sparkly and perfect for a wedding. A great way to add a touch of gold is through table decorations. Rather than ending up with 10 identical vases or fl oral centre pieces you’re stuck with afterwards, start early and collect jam jars and tins to up cycle into quirky centre pieces. Use Rust-Oleum Metallic Spray Paint in Pure Gold or Aged Copper to turn empty jars into mini vases. You’ll need a couple of coats of paint then once dry you can decorate with ribbons, jute, buttons and even wool to tie in your colour scheme.

Seating plans and table numbersWith a little bit of planning you can create quirky matching or mismatched table numbers really easily with a few paint techniques & picture frames.

There are a couple of ways you could use the frames:

1. Remove the glass and paint the backing board with Rust-Oleum Chalkboard Paint in black and use them for seating plans or table numbers. By setting aside the glass you can use the frames afterwards as normal picture frames for all your wedding pictures.

2. Collect wallpaper samples to tie in with your theme. You won’t need much wallpaper for a few frames, then either stencil the table names or numbers directly onto the paper or use wet erasable chalk pens to write directly onto the glass. These are also still usable afterwards.

For more information on Cheryl, please visit www.allroundcreativejunkie.com and for more information on Rust-Oleum’s range of paints, please visitwww.makeityours.co.uk

Make your own buntingRustic weddings outdoors and in barns are really on trend at the moment and hessian (or burlap) is a big feature of this style.Using a brush, stencil and a pot of Rust-Oleum Satin Furniture Paint, stencil on initials to create your very own monogrammed bunting. You can also go for hearts, stars or anything you feel would tie in your theme. You don’t even need to sew this bunting, simply cut a small slot in the top corners of each fl ag and weave through ribbon or coloured jute string to match your colour scheme. It really couldn’t be easier.

One of the colour themes for 2016 is lemon and lavender. This 4 tier stacked cake uses these colours to a great advantage with lemon tiers and delicate lavender lace decorating the white tiers. Ruffl es are also a popular theme this year and I have mixed lemon and white together in the addition of ruffl es on the bottom tier. The colours are refl ected in the fl oral decoration on the top of the cake. I have made sugar fl owers which include a yellow gerbera and lavender lisiathus. www.sugardesign.co.uk

It may seem ages until your wedding, but it’s really important to have your style consultations early just in case you’re planning any drastic changes. If you want to chop off your long hair, try out a new colour or have a go with hair extensions, now’s the time to do it.

If you change your mind, then you have time to put it right, and if you love your new do, perfect, you’ve found a new look for your wedding. It’s also a good time to get appointments booked for you, your bridesmaids and mum too. Wedding hair takes time and chances are if you leave it until the last minute, you’ll be fi ghting with other brides for those Saturday morning, pre wedding appointments.

Two months before the big day, start browsing magazines and websites to see which styles

will work best with your dress, veil and any hair accessories. Cut them out, print them off and keep

them altogether to show your stylist when you have your wedding hair trial.

Well-nourished, healthy locks don’t just happen, so treat your hair to it’s own pamper session. A hair mask will moisturise, repair and add shine. It’ll revitalize dull and lifeless hair leaving it feeling gorgeous.

A trial with your hairdresser is a must. This means you both know what to expect on the day, how

much time to allow and gives you a chance to experiment with a few styles, especially if you’re

going for an up-do.

Make sure that fi nal cut and colour happens a couple of weeks before the wedding. Two weeks gives plenty of time for your hair to adjust to the colour and cut and keep any grey strands and split ends at bay.

The fi nal countdown in on! Confi rm all your appointments with your hairdresser just to make sure it runs like clockwork on the day. Treat your hair to another hair mask too. Do it too close to

the wedding and your hair may be too soft for your hairdresser to work with.

The day has fi nally arrived. First thing to do is think about what you wear for your hairdressers appointment. Don’t wear anything you have to take off over your head – if you have an elaborate style, you don’t want to mess it up. And remember, you’ll leave your hairdressers with your veil and hair accessories in.

ASK THEExperts

What key factors should a Bride and

Groom consider when looking for their

ideal photographer?

Enjoy fl icking through a variety of

wedding magazines to decide on the

style of photography that you are both

after: Reportage? Portraiture? Fine art? Fun and

quirky? Research photographers in your area,

looking carefully at their websites to ascertain how

well their photographs 'speak' to you and match

your chosen style. Now narrow your choice down

to three photographers before contacting them

to discuss availability and price: how effi cient

and personable are they in this initial contact?

Meet with the photographer: What is your initial

impression? Do they exude professionalism? Whilst

the photographer may have some suggestions to

help guide you in planning the photos for your

day, are they attentive listeners, sensitive to your

needs - or are they simply preoccupied with the

hard sell? Ask to see a full recent wedding album to

satisfy yourself that they can take consistently great

photographs throughout the day. Very importantly,

you should bond with your photographer as they

will be a crucial part of your big day, and if you have

absolute trust in them, you will enjoy your day that

bit more – and it will show in the photographs.

Some of my friends have suggested having a celebrant to conduct my ceremony, could you please tell me some

of the advantages of doing this?

The advantages of having a celebrant conduct your marriage are many – the ceremony can be held at any time of

the day and anywhere. The couple will still need to say the declaratory words in front of a Registrar to make the marriage legal in the UK – this can be done at any time before the ceremony with the Celebrant. The only limit to the venue is your imagination, it could be in a forest, on the beach, in a restaurant or a hotel, but the premises do not need to be licenced for weddings as the couple will already be legally married. Your guests will not realise that it is not the actual wedding ceremony as you can still “sign” a marriage certifi cate. Many things can be incorporated into the ceremony itself, the Unity Candle, the Loving Cup, First and Last Kiss, Hand Fasting and even Jumping the Broom! Every ceremony is completely unique for you, written after meetings with the bride and groom to ensure the ceremony tells their love story in their way.

I’m not getting married, but a group of us from work have been invited to a colleagues evening wedding reception. Can you please let us know what the

etiquette is with regard to gifts for an evening reception?

There’s no right or wrong when it comes to purchasing gifts for the Bride and Groom. If they have a specifi c gift list then purchasing a gift from their list is the best thing to do. If you fi nd

that all the smaller, less expensive gifts have already been allocated then a good place to shop for wedding gifts is Shop-4.co.uk. This excellent website has a range

of gifts at very competitive prices. From the quirky to shabby-chic, there’s something to suit every couple. My suggestion is the Coir Matt – this useful mat has the slogan ‘ Utterly Brilliant, Fabulous, Attractive Couple Live Here’ written on it. It’s priced at just £15.00 + p&p and will make an excellent addition to any home.

HELP! We are getting married at the end of August and have left the ‘little extras’ too late. I’ve been hunting high and low for letters for our top table but

as I’ve left it so late, nothing is in stock! Can you recommend anywhere I could get these from?

The use of letters at weddings is very popular this year and this is probably why you are struggling to obtain any. However, Shop-4.co.uk have a range of letters in

stock so it’s defi nitely worth looking on their website. If you’re still struggling to get the exact letters you’re after then you could also consider a ‘MR & MRS’ lettering set that they have available. Both look wonderful on the Top Table.

My Fiancé and I have booked a photographer who specialises in reportage photography for our wedding day. However he has asked us if we want

any ‘staged’ photos. We don’t want the traditional photos but want to have a bit of fun with some of the photos. Can you suggest anything that we could do?

There’s lots you could do. For example, how about getting a photo-booth prop set? You don’t necessarily have to have a photo-booth to use these props. You

could hand them out to guest and get them to pose in groups for your photographer. Another idea would be to get the Groom, Best-Man, Father’s of both the Bride and Groom and give them a cigar and even a hip-fl ask each. Get them to sit or stand casually with the cigar and hip fl ask in their hands or even pretending to drink from them! Shop-4.co.uk has hip fl asks for all members of the bridal party and also has the photo-booth props.

Q What was it about Castle Goring that made you see it as the perfect wedding venue?

A “EVERYTHING”! Castle Goring has an intriguing history it was built for romance you know. Percy Shelly, one of the greatest romantic poets of all time inherited the Castle and had a great romance with his 2nd wife, Mary Shelley, authoress of Frankenstein. They were very much in love. In fact his ‘Ode To Love’ is used by many brides when they are getting married. So that association alone is unique. Putting that aside, the Castle itself is wonderful. The staterooms on the first floor are splendid and really beautiful and they lend themselves to gracious living so they are perfect for receptions. The west wing, which has a double height ceiling, is perfect for ceremonies. The Castle has two beautiful staircases; a cantilever staircase at the front, and a horseshoes staircase at the back. Unlike any other building, it was the first building in the world built with a duel façade, so you have a very castellated front and a very beautiful palladium back with a horseshoe staircase. There’s a big dining room for receptions in the castle itself and on the other hand the gardens are so beautiful you can have a marquee and look onto the back of the castle which makes a perfect backdrop”.

Q What would you suggest to our readers to consider when looking for a wedding venue?

A “It’s important whenever anybody is looking for a wedding venue to bear in mind it’s most likely going to be one of the most important days of their life and if they want it to go off beautifully they should want everything looking beautiful and functioning properly. What we are trying to do is give people a home for their big day. The castle becomes theirs. There’s a feeling that it’s their home for the day. Most wedding venues offer two or three rooms. We offer several rooms on the ground floor, all the state rooms on the first floor and the use of the park! I want people to feel that they have the freedom to choose. They can have their wedding in the West Wing and then have their drinks in the state rooms on the first floor and then go and have the Wedding Breakfast in the large dining room or marquee”.

Q You are well known for your class and style. How can a Bride ensure that she fits in with the beautiful surroundings of Castle Goring?

A “Bride’s shouldn’t aim to fit in, rather use the surroundings to enhance her special day and make it more special than it would otherwise have been. Because it is their moment of glory, they should have glorious surroundings! I think I am very lucky to own Goring and I want to share my good fortune with others. I’m rather free spirited about it all and want people to think ‘this is my house for the day’. I want them to feel completely at home and think WOW GREAT! This is just what the doctor ordered. Enjoy the kind of day that they want”.

Q What are you top 5 Do’s and Don’ts for a Wedding.

1) “Aim to have an event that is sufficiently classical in style and tone so it will never date – you wouldn’t want to look at your photographs in twenty or thirty years’ time and think My Gosh! – It’s very important to keep it classical, because classical things never date”.

2) “Do bear in mind it’s your special day. Try to get the best place and the best people to instigate your wishes so that you get to enjoy your day. And choose good food good music”.

3) “Don’t whatever you do put your bridesmaids in white or cream dresses. You’re the queen and you don’t want it looking as though there are three, five or seven guest brides on the day. You should be the only person in white on the day”.

4) “Do choose a wedding planner to take the stress and strain off you. You definitely do not want to be planning it yourself. That is the surest way of getting stressed and ruining the whole day. They ensure good planning”.

5) “Don’t whatever you do antagonize your mother in law! She’s your husbands’ mother and he loves her no matter what. I got on with my Mother in Law and it’s really important to do so because she will be involved in your family life. Do not exclude your mother-in-law more than is necessary when planning your wedding”.

Lady Colin Campbell welcomes you to the fabulous and historic Castle Goring. We put a few questions to her and asked her to

share her advice.

VENUE: THE WHITEWATER HOTELwww.whitewater-hotel.co.uk

"Our day could not have been more perfect for us, helped greatly by the perfect venue and staff. From the very 1st time we contacted Whitewater, we couldn't have felt more at ease and happy that things were going to be as relaxed as we wished.

Our wedding was probably one of the smallest, informal ones but we felt any detail we did request was no problem. In fact we were so trusting in the organisation, I didnt even think about anything on the day, just rocked up and got married.

Red carpet, chairs outside, the dining table set up, cake being displayed, the

amazing cheese and biscuits....hadn't thought how it would all look, hadn't thought to ask about some details and we werent disapponted at any point. Helped by the weather of course which obviously couldnt be planned but topped off our day.

We wanted informal, relaxed, intimate, and thats exactly what we were given.

We will be back to stay, without a doubt, whitewater hotel has become a fave of ours for a little stop off heading in or out of town. Can't believe I'd never been before."

The Perfect Venue For Your Perfect DayA fairy tale setting for the wedding of your dreams, with the very best of subtle modernity. From the moment you arrive, to the day you depart Atholl Palace as a married couple, our wedding team will make sure that this is where happily ever after begins. www.athollpalace.com

Why NWMag Loves Scotland….A Wedding in Scotland gives you a unique choice of experienced and friendly wedding professionals and a magnifi cent range of Venues to choose from for your Wedding Day. Not only is Scotland one of the most beautiful countries in the world, the choices available to you for style content and location of your ceremony is hard to beat.

Scotland’s Capital City, Edinburgh, combines both ancient and modern with a uniquely Scottish atmosphere. In Edinburgh, medieval buildings rub shoulders with modern architecture, giving you a choice of Gothic churches, amazing museums and galleries in which to tie the knot. Edinburgh and Glasgow off er fantastic night-life. Edinburgh, also known as "the Athens of the North", is a feast for the mind and the senses, playing host to great restaurants, shops and an unequalled programme of city festivals throughout the year. For a Wedding with a diff erence, you could utilise Hogmanay, the Scottish New Year, or festivals such as the Tattoo, the International and the Fringe.

Of course, you must also consider Glasgow as a possibility for your Scottish City Wedding. Glasgow, is in fact, the largest City in Scotland and has a cosmopolitan vibe that can usually be found in the Cities that border the Med.

The Highlands and the Islands serve up a diverse range of dramatic backdrops, giving you spectacular imagery for your wedding day. Perthshire, known as the "big county" has a wide variety of landscapes, from the rich agricultural straths in the east, to the high mountains of the southern Highlands.

The Climate of Scotland is temperate and oceanic, and tends to be very changeable. But this brings dramatic beauty and stunning fl ora and fauna. The West Coast is warmed by the Gulf Stream from the Atlantic and as such as much milder winters (but cooler, wetter summers) than areas on similar latitudes. Argyle, in western Scotland covers the entire western coast between the Mull of Kintyre and Cape Wrath. Argyll was also a medieval bishopric with its cathedral at Lismore

All across Scotland you will discover stunning lochs, beautiful beaches and castles ranging from the romantic to spectacular and this is what is making so many couples choose Scotland for their destination wedding.

EDITOR'S CHOICEAn unimaginable

wedding experience

I recently discovered the variety of exclusive experiences available at SeaWorld, Aquatica and Discovery Cove in Orlando. I visited these fantastic parks for National Weddings Magazine, to see how our readers could experience a proposal and/or wedding with a diff erence.

On my visit, I got up close to some amazing animals, challenged some of mankind's most incredible rides and soaked up the unique atmosphere in all three parks.

SeaWorld off ers guests a whimsical, one-of-a-kind journey to the wonders that exist beyond the ocean's door. This unique waterpark really is unlike any other you've ever experienced. Float through an undersea world of exotic fi sh. Thunder through rolling rapids. Kick up your feet and relax on long stretches of soft, white sand beaches. Or take a tube slide through an underwater world where black-and-white Commerson's Dolphins play and race alongside you.

The exclusive ‘Discovery Cove’ Park off ers a once-in-a-lifetime-experience! Here, I was able to swim with a dolphin, snorkel with rays and meet a marmosa. The highlight of my visit was a one-on-one dolphin encounter. Wading into the dolphin lagoon and fi nding myself nose to bottlenose with one of these fascinating and intelligent animals was a dream come true for me. To top it all, I experienced the ride of a lifetime… taking hold of its dorsal fi n, I held on tight and this wonderful animal took me on a journey I’ll never forget.

Retreating to my private cabana, tucked within the lush landscape of Discovery Cove, I was able to relax on a comfortable chaise lounge and refl ect on what I can only describe as one of the best days of my life.

These parks off er couples an unimaginable wedding experience -envied by many and rivalled by few. The team at SeaWorld, Aquatica and Discovery Cove can turn your special occasion into a one-of-a-kind, once-in-a-lifetime memory. Your proposal and wedding day deserve a spectacular setting; a setting so unique that your event will be transformed into a lifelong memory.

Orlando is known for making magical memories and SeaWorld, Aquatica and Discovery Cove are no exception. You can say “I do” at Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld®, an enchanting Orlando wedding hotel that excels at entertaining the imagination. After the wedding, head out into the Parks to enjoy a fun-fi lled, once-in-a-lifetime Honeymoon.
