Rhiannon Russell from

SKM was awarded with

the Australian Young

Transport and Logistics

Professional Award, sponsored

by Mack Trucks. The purpose

of this award is to “encourage

and acknowledge outstanding

achievement of an individual

working in the transport and/or

Logistics industry.”

Rhiannon won the state award

in 2005 and was assessed by a

panel of judges against finalists

from other states through a

written submission and interview

process for the national awards.

The judging panel said Rhiannon

demonstrated high leadership

qualities, an ability to implement

and manage projects and programs

with a high level of creativeness

whilst making a significant

contribution to the transport and

Logistics industry. She was also

assessed as providing benefits to

the industry in professional and

personal development activities

and has the passion, attributes

and capacity to be an outstanding

ambassador for the industry.

Rhiannon said she was very

pleasantly surprised by her win

given the impressive field of

finalists from around Australia.

Rhiannon completed her

Bachelor of Science Degree with

First Class Honours in Sustainable

Development in 2003. During her

university studies, she developed a

particular interest in the potential

for a sustainable transport

network in Perth, supported by

a sustainable pattern of urban

growth and development. Her

effort and enthusiasm was proven

when she was presented with the

Minister’s Award for Planning

Excellence for her thesis on

transit-oriented development and

the Perth to Mandurah rail line.

Rhiannon entered the transport

industry as a research assistant

with the Department for Planning

and Infrastructure in 2003 and is

currently working as a transport

planner at the global professional

consultancy firm Sinclair Knight

Merz (SKM). Rhiannon consults to

both private and public sectors on

transport matters ranging from

impact assessment to strategic

policy for passenger and freight

transport.

As is evident from her research

and recent project work, Rhiannon

is particularly interested in the

relationship between land use

and transport and how this may

be influenced to produce more

sustainable outcomes for both

sectors. She sees sustainable

development, and particularly

transport, as a critical element

in Australia for this and future

generations and says it is this

ability to have a genuine impact

that makes her so interested in

working within the transport

sector.

Rhiannon is involved in the

WA section of the Future Leaders

Group (supported by CILTA and

SCLAA), which helps to promote

the transport industry to other

young people entering or already

in the workforce. Through

this group, she welcomes the

opportunity to speak to young

people about her experience within

the fields of transport planning

and sustainability and wishes to

“encourage students to consider the wide scope of employment within the transport sector, its importance to our urban areas and economy and the opportunity to make a tangible difference to the city they live in.”

Supply Chain WA 2006,

held in Perth, was well

attended by delegates

from local and interstate.

There were a variety of trade

exhibitions showcasing a diverse

range of organisations and projects

in the Supply Chain and transport

industry. In particular the fresh

juice stand was well visited and a

refreshing break from traditional

displays.

The Conference was opened

by John Elliot, General Manager

from DOTARS, presenting the

significance of AusLink in

providing National funding to

address the growing freight

demand in WA. Greg Martin,

Director General of DPI, suitably

followed with his opening address

on Government priorities in

supporting the development of

Supply Chain and Logistics in WA.

The sessions across the three

streams covered the broad aspects

of the Supply Chain and transport

industry and reflected the issues

and challenges present today. The

panel sessions were well attended

and provided a great forum to hear

industry leaders discuss arising

issues and the future trends.

Besides the technical aspects,

the Conference provided an

excellent opportunity to build

networks with people across the

industry. It was encouraging to

see the promotion of young people

in the transport and Logistics

industry, with representatives

from each State attending

the Conference. They took the

opportunity to hold a National

committee meeting for the new

Future Leaders Forum (supported

by CILTA and SCLAA), making

plans for an exciting year ahead.

After two full days of

hearing technical seminars and

contemplating industry issues,

it was great to be treated to

an extravaganza of food and

entertainment at the Gala Dinner.

Everyone dressed to impress and

the three waiters certainly made

quite an impression. The night

was particularly celebrated by the

winners of the Australian Supply

Chain and Logistics Awards. A

special mention needs to be made

about our very own Rhiannon

Russell who won the Mack Trucks

Young Achiever’s Award. Rhiannon

was quite surprised given the

impressive field of finalists from

around Australia. Well done

Rhiannon!

Following the success

of last year’s Transport

Expo, 2007 renamed event

– the Perth Truck and

Trailer Show - is tipped to be even

bigger and better. The 2007 show

will be held at the Perth Exhibition

Centre from July 27th to 29th.

This will be the first time the

event will be held at this premier

venue and will allow exhibitors

more room to better display their

products and merchandise with

more flexibility and ease of access

for bump in and out.

Visitor numbers increased

significantly when the Perth

Motor Show first changed to this

audience-drawing venue. Visitor

surveys also indicated increased

levels of satisfaction coupled with

a longer average visit time; the

Perth Truck and Trailer show is

expecting similar results.

Expressions of interest for

possible display space are urgently

invited.

Applicants will be sent a

prospectus and exhibitor details

pack.

The organiser of the event is

comprised of members of the

Commercial Vehicle Industry

who understand your needs

A fantastic time was had

by all at the Transport

Industry Gala Dinner

and Awards night at the

Parmelia Hilton in Perth.

The Awards have now been

running for over 10 years and

cover various industry categories,

all made possible by the sponsors

– BP; CGU; WA Driver Recruitment;

DOCEP Resources Safety; Max

Winkless Volvo and NTI – who

support the industry and recognise

its increased professionalism.

NominationsAnyone involved within the

transport industry can be

nominated for an award. A

nomination form addressing the

selection criteria is first sent to

the Transport Forum of WA and

once this has been assessed by the

judges, the top three or four are

chosen and invited to interview

with the panel, which then leads

onto further assessment as the

judges make their decision. The

panel is made up of people

within the transport industry

and regulatory bodies – from WA

Police, Main Roads WA, DOCEP

Resources Safety, WorkSafe and the

Public Transport Authority.

Although the Transport Forum

organises and runs the awards,

it does not have a say in the final

outcome and the judges’ decision

is final.

These are the Award winners

and runners up who have

been deemed as exceptional

representatives for the transport

industry:

• BP Professional Driver of the

Year went to Mr Don Messenger

of Spartan Freightlines and the

runner up was Anthony

Bakranich from Cape Crushing.

• CGU School and Community

Bus Driver of the Year went to

Mr Lance Paterson of

Shepherdson Transport and the

runner-up was Cheryl Cheetam.

• WA Driver Recruitment

Operations Excellence Award

went to Mr Norm Higgins of

Jetstyle Express and the

runner-up was Dave Walters of

Sadleirs.

• DOCEP Resources Safety DG

Safe Driver of the Year Award

went to Mr Nick Kramer of

Coogee Chemicals and the

runner-up was Dennis Treasure,

also from Coogee Chemicals.

• Max Winkless Volvo

Outstanding Contribution to

the WA Road Transport

Industry Award went to Mr

Max O’Dea and the runners-

up were Stewart Beard of WA

Freightlines Group and Heather

Jones of Success Transport.

• NTI WA Transport Woman of

the Year Award went to Ms

Karen-Maree’ Kaye of Westcoast

Print and Promotions and the

runner-up was Cathi Payne of

Payne Haulage.

Each Award winner took home

a cheque for $1000 plus a crystal

gift, Award-specific number plates,

a certificate and their name will go

on an honour board, located at the

Transport Forum of WA.

CongratulationsDon Messenger, who picked up

the BP Professional Driver of the

Year award, says he was pleased to

have won the award after 26 years

in the industry, driving various

applications over more than

seven million kilometres. Don’s

commitment to customer service

and going that extra mile held him

in good stead for the award.

Don has been surprised by the

attention the award has brought

him, but he thinks the more

attention brought to the awards,

the better.

“Company’s should be promoting

the awards internally to promote

higher standards,” says Don.

Don and wife Carol – winner

of the NTI WA Transport Woman

of the Year in 2001– say the

personalised number plates are

a great tool in raising awareness

of the awards and promoting the

transport industry in a positive

light as they attract so much

attention and raise questions as to

their origins.

Coogee Chemicals had a

successful evening with driver

Nick Kramer winning the DOCEP

Resources Safety DG Safe Driver

of the Year award, with work mate

Dennis Treasure hot on his heels

as the runner-up.

“Coogee Chemicals is

thrilled the drivers have the

opportunity to be rewarded for

their professionalism,” said Rob

Hennessey, Transport Manager for

Coogee Chemicals.

“We are glad to have drivers

of such a high standard… This

company demands the best and

most dedicated drivers who are

mindful of the products they carry.

We get some of the best drivers

and then provide additional

training, but it is the drivers’

attitudes to their work that makes

the difference.”

Transport & Machinery

magazine’s Karen was also

honoured, although very modest

about her win.

“It was really unexpected,” she

said.

“I would like to thank the

Transport Forum of WA and the

NTI, as well as the judges for

choosing me and Nancy Malasits

- T&M’s features co-ordinator - for

nominating me.”

The award was suitable

acknowledgement for Karen’s hard

work and dedication. Having been

actively involved in the transport

industry for almost a decade,

publishing Transport & Machinery

magazine for the past nine years,

arranging the SuperTrucks at

Barbagallo and helping initiate

industry expositions for the

public, Karen knows the issues

the transport industry faces and

continually strives to promote the

industry in a positive light.

“I want people in the industry to

know that I am here by choice and

I am committed to the industry

and its people. Transport and

Machinery is a publication for the

industry and I want readers to

know we are here to help. I really

do care and my door is always

open.“

SCLAA Members meet two sporting greats

■ SCLAA QUEENSLAND NEWS

The SCLAA Members in Queensland had the opportunity to hear from

Natalie Cook, Olympic Gold medallist - Beach Volleyball, and Scott Tronc,

Rugby League State of Origin player at their final event for 2006. A nice way

to relax, wind down and enjoy the networking.

Scott Austin, Managing Director of Sunshine Technologies was awarded the Information Management Award. The award was presented at the SCLAA Queensland Chapter Christmas function as Scott was unable to attend the Awards Dinner in Perth. Natalie Cook, Olympic Gold Medallist for Beach Volleyball and a great supporter of the SCLAA attended the function to present Scott with his award. Natalie posed with Scott who had the privilege of wearing her Gold medal from the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games ... unfortunately, Natalie wouldn't swap awards!

The SCLAA (VIC) were

fortunate to host an

industry briefing

with guest speaker

Paul Ryan who is a Director of

Investment Research at Goldman

Sachs JBWere, specialising in the

Transport & Beverages Sectors.

Paul gave a fascinating insight

into how the equity markets are

interpreting the dynamic shifts

occurring in the transport sector.

The timing of the breakfast

could not have been better as it

was not only the day that Qantas

announced its acceptance of a

takeover offer from a consortium

lead by Macquarrie Bank, but

it also followed Toll Holdings’

announcement the previous day

of its planned separation of the

Group’s transport infrastructure

assets from its network and

Supply Chain business.

Paul spoke of the recent merger

& acquisition activity in the

transport sector globally and the

high multiples ascribed to some

global purchases. This is partly

as result of relatively low interest

rates and high levels of liquidity in

the market.

Paul advised that they believe

there is still further opportunity

for purchase by Toll Holdings in

Australia as well as overseas.

He also spoke of the success

of Brambles in simplifying its

business structure and future

opportunities in Europe & Nth

America.

While the presentation was a

key focus, the audience were given

a strong opportunity to ask Paul

about what the take out is from

both the Qantas takeover & Toll

Holdings business split.

All in all a great morning in

what we need to remind ourselves

is very much a leading industry

building a competitive advantage

in Australia.

At a Breakfast Meeting

in late 2006, SCLAA

members and their guests

heard about some of

the infrastructure planning efforts

currently being made at both a State

and National level.

Mr. Bryan Moulds, the National

Executive Director (Sustainable

Growth), for the Property Council

of Australia, gave an entertaining

and motivating point of view of the

critical work being done in ensuring

Australia’s major infrastructure

projects and development policies

support sustainable growth.

Bryan described a series of

existing and planned projects,

some of which did meet

the targeted ‘sustainable

growth’ aims some others

met local needs, but a

different approach could

well have provided a solution

that was more economically

sustainable.

The importance of this policy

advocacy work at State and National

levels cannot be underestimated.

The aims and targets of this type

of work are measured in terms

of sustainability, eco-efficiency

and liveability outcomes from the

built environment for the whole

community. I am sure all readers

would be able to describe major

developments they are familiar with

that meet and some that do not meet,

these goals.

The SCLAA of South Australia

thank Bryan for his enlightening

and entertaining overview of the

activities of the National Property

Council and we wish them well in

their for policy advocacy campaigns

for sustainable infrastructure

developments.
