Where is it?

E stonia lies in a sometimes forgotten and so all-the-more-fascinating corner of Europe, nestled between Nordic countries to the west across the Baltic Sea and

bordered by Russia to the east. It is at a crossroads of one of northern Europe's most captivating and alluring pieces of real estate, just 80 km across the Gulf of Finland from Helsinki, an overnight ferry ride from Stockholm and a short train or bus ride from St. Petersburg. To the south, within an easy drive, are Estonia's Baltic neighbors, Latvia and Lithuania. Geographically, Estonia is distinguished by thick forests that cover an astonishing 40 percent of the country's territory, and by its winding coasts and dozens of inhabited islands; large tracts of magical, unspoiled Estonian wilderness are home to a rich variety of wildlife, including bear, wolf, elk, moose, wild cats and more.

History

E stonians first arrived on this land 5,000 years ago, following glaciers that receded north. Native tribes lived off the land and later formed Vikinglike warrior

parties that staged attacks against nearby Finland and Sweden. European powers began vying for control of Estonia around 1200 B.C., at a time when this was one of Europe's last pagan strongholds. After fierce resistance, crusading Danish and German knights finally subdued and converted the Estonians; castle fortresses built by the Crusaders still bear witness to their

centuries of domination. Within several hundred years, Tallinn had been accepted into the Hanseatic League and become one of the hubs of European trade. Estonia was presided over, sometimes ruthlessly, by a German landed class, whose descendants retained their power and influence for 700 years.

Amid the chaos of war and revolution that saw Czarist Russia unravel, Estonia finally declared its independence in 1918; after two years battling both German and Soviet Russian forces, it dramatically secured its freedom. The country flowered into a modern European state during the subsequent two decades. But Estonia's hardwon independence was cruelly snuffed out when Red Army forces occupied it at the outbreak of World War II. But in 1991 Estonians again reasserted themselves, and peacefully broke away from the Soviet Union. Estonia has since gained the reputation as one of the most dynamic and progressive countries to have reemerged from behind the Iron Curtain.

Shopping

The shortagefilled days of the communist era are a distant memory. Shopping in Estonia today is a satisfying experience, full of adventures and surprisingly good

bargains. There are hundreds of new, Westernstandard stores, malls and specialty shops, as well as traditional outdoor markets. Craft shops also offer handmade wares, from ceramics, leather and hats to jewelry, glass, quilts and sweaters. While quality of products here is high, prices remain highly favorable—still lower than in most of Western Europe.TO

Good buys

T here is a wide array of good buys in Estonia. Hand-made wares are especially popular, and wellpriced. Ceramic replicas of old city buildings, often fitted

with candleholders inside are much sought after souvenirs. Craftsmen here also make a variety of goods out of wood, from toy cars to dolls to toilet seats to flowers; there are also trays and spoons made out of lovelysmelling juniper. Handknit sweaters, artistically designed glass or dolomi-testone candleholders are also delightful, as are a range of goods made out of leather or wrought iron. Other favorites buys include Estonianmade Kalev chocolates, Vana Tallinn liqueur or Saku beer. Local designers, like Ivo Nikkolo or the Baltika manufacturer, also produce highfashion clothes that compare with the best in anywhere else in the West. Here, however, prices are usually better.

Cuisine and the weather

T raditional Estonian food has its roots firmly in the countryside, relying heavily on pork, potatoes and garden variety vegetables. The main culinary

influences were from Germans, who ruled over Estonia for so many centuries.

The climate in Estonia is temperate, characterized by what are usually warm summers and mild but snowfilled winters. Because it's along the Baltic Sea, the weather is often

breezy and humid. Average temperature range from 20º in summer (usually July is the hottest month) to 8º in winter.

Language

V owelladen Estonian is a Finno-Ugric language, closely related to Finnish and more distantly related to Hungarian; it uses the Latin alphabet. English

is widely spoken here, to the point where there is almost always someone nearby who speaks it fluently; Russian is also still widely spoken, though younger Estonians tend to be far comfortable speaking English. German speakers are also fairly common. Hello in Estonian is tere; goodbye is nägemist.

Political system

E stonia has a parliamentary system, with a prime minister who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the country. A president handles many of

the ceremonial duties, but also heads the armed forces and helps in the formation of governments. The parliament is called the Riigikogu, and is made up of 101 legislators.

Estonia celebrates its independence day on February 24, the date in 1918 when it first declared independence. Estonians see the Soviet period as having been a military occupation, and don't consider that the Soviet collapse lead to their independence – just to its restoration.

Visas

V isitors entering the country must have valid passports. A visa is not required of citizens from: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Costa Rica,

Getting there

E stonia is now very much enmeshed in the world transportation network, with its airline and ferry sectors particularly well developed. Tallinn has the

newest and most modern airport in the Baltic region; the city also has a large, hightech ferry port system.

Travel

By airEstonian Air, Scandinavian Airlines, Finnair, Air Baltic, Lithuanian Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Air Livonia, Aeroflot, Aero Airlines, Aerosvit Airlines and British Airways all have regular flights to rebuilt Tallinn International Airport. Tallinn has direct flight connections with the following cities: London, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Moscow, Vienna, Kiev, Riga, Vilnius and Warsaw. Tallinn Airport is located a mere four km from the city center. Taxis to the center cost on average less than $5. There are also special airport coaches, lines number 2, which run from the airport to the city center and bus station.TO

By bus or carBus connections are excellent between Tallinn and other major European cities. Eurolines offers comfortable, long haul buses for those who wish to enter Estonia using the Via Baltica highway. Driving is on the right side of the road and passing on the left.

By seaThis is the common way to get to Estonia. There are daily ferry connections between Stockholm and Tallinn (14 hours) and Helsinki and Tallinn (4 hours). In the summer months hydrofoils make the Helsinki–Tallinn run in about 90 minutes.

CustomsA maximum of 80,000 Estonian kroons in cash may be taken into or out of the country without declaration. There are no limits on the import of bonds, personal items or personal goods. In addition to personal items a traveler entering Estonia may bring in goods within the following duty free limits per one calendar day: Manufactured articles of total value not over 5000 Estonian

kroons (except vehicles). Foodstuffs of total quantity not exceeding 10 kg including

the total quantity of coffee, tea, spices, seeds etc. not exceeding 3 kg. If you are carrying objects d'art, live

animals, leather or jewelry, it is advisable to choose the red line at customs control. Alcoholic beverages and beer: persons aged 18 years

or over: 1 liter of strong (over 22%) and 2 litter of mild (maximum 22%) alcohol and 2 l of wine. and tobacco products: Persons aged 18 years or over – 200

Currency exchange

Currency exchangeSome scoffed when Estonia boldly introduced its own currency in 1992, but the Estonian kroon (abbreviated EEK) is stable and strong. The exchange rate of the Estonian kroon (EEK) against the European Union euro (EUR) is fixed at 1 EUR = 15.6466 EEK what is considered to be an equivalent of the Estonian kroon official exchange rate 1 DEM = 8 EEK.

The smaller unit of currency is called the Sent, and 1 EEK = 100 sents. Foreign currencies can be exchanged in banks and exchange offices. There are exchange offices in major hotels, the Tallinn harbour, the airport, the railway station, and many other places. Banks in Estonia are open Monday through Saturday.

Credit cards and traveller's chequesMajor credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, Eurocard, Diner's Club and American Express are accepted in most major hotels, restaurants and shops, but be sure to ask first. Most banks will give cash advances on credit cards upon presentation of a valid passport. Traveller's cheques are less likely to be accepted in shops, although they can be exchanged in most banks. Eurocheque is the most widely accepted travellers check in Estonia. Consult with your credit card and travellers cheque company before travelling.

Postal and communication servicesPost offices are open from 9.00–18.00 on weekdays and 9.30–15.00 on Saturdays. Telephone and fax services are open everyday from 7.00–22.00. The Estonian country code is 372. Dial 0 and area code before the requested number to call to the other regions within Estonia and 00 for international calls. Many Tourist Information centers also sell stamps, post cards, and envelopes and will be happy to post your mail for you.

ElectricityEstonian electric current is 220 volts AC, 50 Hz. European-style 2-pin plugs are necessary.

Medical servicesNo vaccinations or health certificates are required upon entering Estonia, though health insurance is advisable.

Ordinary medicaments such as aspirin, etc., are available in pharmacies („Apteek“) in every town.

TippingTipping hasn't yet developed into an exact science here in Estonia, so many visitors end up following the tipping custom of their home country. In restaurants, hotels and taxis, the service charge is included in the bill.

to your destination, and local buses that stop more frequently. Express buses are always more comfortable than the locals. It's best to buy your tickets from the main bus station at least one to two hours in advance.

By carDriving Rules and Regulations: You must drive with your lights on 24 hours a day. Speed limit: 50 km/h in built up areas, 90 km/h on highways unless posted otherwise, some sections up to 110–120 km/h. The driver and passengers must wear seat belts. Valid Green Card insurance is required in Estonia. Don't drink and drive! The blood alcohol limit for drivers in Estonia is 0%

By railTravel between Estonia's two main cities, Tallinn and Tartu, takes only three hours by express train. In approximately that time, you can travel from Tallinn to the eastern border city of Narva, and from there to St. Petersburg and Moscow.

Tickets can be purchased at the train station or in the first car of domestic diesel trains. There is only one type of seating and no private compartments on domestic trains.

Location and information on the region

N arva is a border city of Estonia, situated in the north-western part of the country and constitutes a link between Estonia and Russia. From Tallinn it is

212 km and from St.Petersburg 150 km to Narva. The city is located on the left bank of the Narva River, 14 km from the place where it flows into the Gulf of Finland; that is where also the resort town Narva-Jõesuu is situated.

History

T he history of Narva begins in the ancient times. Narva is special and unique, it is here where different cultures, nations and countries have met and entwined

during several ages. The old and the new exist side by side.The principal specific trait of Narva is its situation – on

the border of the West and the East. Thanks to this, it has played an important role in the history of Europe in many ways. From the perspective of the trade, Narva developed into an important city of transit, where movement took place both across the water and on the land, uniting the East with the West and the other way round. The most remarkable blooming in the history of Narva as a city of trade took place in the XVII century when the city formed part of the powerful Kingdom of Sweden. This was the „Golden Age“ of Narva. At that time, roads passed through Narva uniting the Baltic Countries not only with Russia, but also with Persia and Transcaucasia.

The city of Narva has also been the battlefield in many wars, such as in the North War and in the Estonian War of Independence. The most well-known historical military event was the famous Narva Battle, where the Swedish Army under the direction of the young king Karl XII managed to win the Russian military forces of czar Peter I which by far outnumbered the Swedish. This was the win that made Karl XII famous as a talented army commander. The battle was of essential importance not only for the state of Sweden, but for Russia as well, as it was the first battle of the Russian Regular Army in its history. The battlefield is topographically

still recognisable today. Four years later, in the year 1704, the solders of Peter I did conquer the Castle of Narva by assault. So there is a reason for the river and the ancient castles standing on the opposite riverbanks to constitute the symbols of the city.

The time of commercial blooming of Narva, as well as the golden age of its bourgeois architecture was before the North War, in the XVII century. Until that time, the city was built mostly of wood and many times almost entirely destroyed in fires. After another extensive fire in 1659 the city was rebuilt again within a short period of time (30–40 years). Only stone buildings were thence permitted, constructed under a strict architectural control. This resulted in a unique architectural ensemble, the so-called Old Town, to have been built in the city centre of Narva. The complex is remarkable for its integrity and genuineness. The elements of local buildings were in many ways similar to those of the baroque architecture typical in many countries of the Northern Europe. The mixture of the existing and the imported elements created a singular style. The stone roofs, the carved stone ornaments of the portals, the latticed metal details – grids, locks, weathervanes – gave a festive and elevated look to the city. Until World War II the Old Town of Narva preserved almost entirely as it had been evolved in the second half of the XVII century. The tragedy took place from March to July 1944, when the city was destroyed by the Soviet air attacks and artillery fire, as well as by explosions and ignitions caused by the retreating German army. Only the Town Hall, a couple of houses in the city centre, the zone of the famous bastions of Narva, the Orthodox Resurrection Church and the Castle of Narva, known as the „visiting card“ of the

city, stayed intact in the war.Today’s „industrial“ appearance of Narva was formed from

the 50’s to the 70’s of the XX century. What happened was that the new Narva overwhelmed the old, both in terms of architecture and lifestyle.

Nevertheless, it is worth coming to Narva for seeing the monuments of the ancient times, as well as for getting acquainted with the city and its inhabitants and to enjoying the blue-skied beaches of the Gulf of Finland.

T he city of Narva is governed by the Narva City Council, which is a representative body of the local government, elected every three years by the residents

of Narva who are entitled to vote. The executive body of the local government of Narva is the Narva City Government, which is formed by the City Council.

Today the life in the city is guided by the Council of 31 members, elected in autumn 2002, and by the City Government consisting of 5 members.

Enterprising

N arva is the second-largest industrial centre in the Republic and provides ca. 15.7% of gross national product. The principal branches of production

include textile industry, e.g. the processing of leather and the sewing of leather products, power engineering, processing of timber and the manufacture of furniture, as well as the production of construction materials. Thanks to the good learning possibilities, the food industry has developed as well. As of 2002, about 3000 enterprises were registered in Narva, including some companies with foreign capital. Many companies are operating in the field of intermediation and sell of merchandise. Narva has always been an important place of transit between Russia, Estonia and the Scandinavian countries. The number of tourists has also begun to grow during the recent years, and in relation to that, the number of companies operating in the field of tourism has also started to increase, which has given a new direction for the enterprises of Narva for extending their activities.

Education

E Every third habitant of Narva is less than 30 years old, therefore the large number of schools is clearly understandable. There are 16 high schools in Narva at

the moment, and with the opening of the Narva College of Tartu University, the opportunity of getting academic education and to study at the open university have risen. The College is also a

place for organising international conferences, exhibitions and seminars and a meeting place of the youth. In addition, there is a vocational education centre in Narva, where more than 2000 people are studying. The centre trains specialists of servicing, enterprising, light industry, information technology, power engineering, construction, car servicing and welding works.

In their free time, students may assist the schools of music, arts and sport and the house of creative activity. The activities of the youth are also coordinated by Narva Youth Centre. The yearly youth fair „Orientiir“ („Target“), where information on the studying possibilities both in and outside Estonia can be obtained, has become a tradition.

N arva is a city of different cultures and traditions. Festivals, concerts, exhibitions and art days are organised here.

Narva is also known for its creative groups, who play an important role in the advancement of the cultural life of the city.

Much emphasis is put on the development of the activity of the societies of national cultures. There are 15 national culture societies in Narva: Tartar, Slavic, Byelorussian, German, Polish, Latvian, Finnish-Ingrain, Gipsian, Swedish, Estonian, Korean, Jewish, Ukrainian. The society of the region of the river banks of the Narva River called Narvamaa („The land of Narva“) could be added to these.

The City Days of Narva have been organised since 1995, promoting multiple cultural and sport events, joyful competi-tions and concerts.

A concert in the honour of one of the most remarkable conductors of XX century, E. Mravinski, takes place every year with the Narva Symphonic Orchestra conducting.TO

Certainly the cultural event with the highest perspective is currently the international competition of young pianists, dedicated to the music of F. Chopin, which attracts partici-pants from many Baltic Sea countries. Since 2003, this competition has also figured among the events supported by the European Music Competitions for Youth (EMCY).

In addition to the mentioned above, international jazz, dance and choir festivals are organised in Narva. Several charity concerts of different Estonian and foreign music groups are aimed at raising money for the reconstruction of the Town Hall of Narva and the Alexander Church.

Different libraries and cultural centres, an art gallery with various exhibitions and the theatre studio Ilmarine are within reach of the habitants of the city.

Especially due to its youthfulness, the sport occupies quite an important place in the cultural life of Narva. The sportsmen of Narva participate in the European and World Championships and in the Olympic Games.

Every year the longest Estonian yaught race „Piirist piirini“ („From border to border“) is organised in Narva, where the participants sail from Narva to Kuressare across the sea.

The most successful sports include football, ice hockey, artistic gymnastics, table tennis, academic rowing, shooting, basketball and volleyball.

The castle town of Narva was founded in the 70’s of the XII cen-tury by the Danes on the banks of the Narva River. It was further built at the times of the Livonian Order in the XIV century and acquired its final form at the beginning of the XV century.

The territory of the castle town is 3.2 hectares and its highest point is the impressive main tower Pikk Hermann that reaches as high as 51 metres. There is no military construction in Estonia at present that could be compared with the Narva Castle Town in terms of variety and preservation time. Together with the Ivangorod Castle on the opposite bank of the Narva River, it constitutes a historical architectural ensemble which is well known all across Europe.

In the castle town it is possible to learn about the history

of Narva from XII century until the beginning of the XX century. Various concerts and exhibitions take place on the territory of the castle town.

The castle town is open from Wednesday to Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

The ticket fee for adults is 25 EEK, for school students 10 EEK, family ticket 50 EEK.

The guide fee for an Estonian or Russian group is 100 EEK, for a foreign group 200 EEK. If you wish to have a guided tour, you are asked to inform about it in advance.

As an exception, on prior agreement, Narva Castle Town also hosts tourism groups on Mondays and Tuesdays. In that case, a double entrance fee is to be paid; the guide fee is the same.

View to the Ivangorod CastleUpon the order of czar Ivan III, a castle was built on the right bank of the Narva River in 1492 with the objective of protecting the eastern border of Russia. In the honour of the czar, it was named Ivangorod. Initially the main layout of the castle was square-shaped, with a defence tower in each corner. The walls and towers of the castle were built of massive limestone rocks. Later the castle was expanded- the passages on the top of the walls, meant for guarding and fighting, were covered with penthouses, loopholes were made in the corner towers. In 1496 the Swedish military forces conquered and ravished the castle. It was restored in 1507. This was how the powerful castles that supplement each other, despite of being architecturally different, emerged on the opposite banks of the Narva River.TO

Places with beautiful natureNarva Pimeaed ParkBy the beginning of the North War (1700–1721), Narva was surrounded by a circle of impressive stone bastions, mounds and other fortifications, making the city one of the most powerful castles in Europe. As a result of that European scale war, Estonia was occupied by Russia. Pimeaed, or the Blind Garden, situated on the Victoria bastion, was founded in the second half of the XIX century. Two historical monuments are located in the park itself and nearby. The first is a cast-iron cross set up on the Victoria bastion in 1853, a memorial monument to the Russian soldiers who died in the besiege of Narva during the North War. The other monument indicates the last resting-place where the fighters of the communist regiment of Viljandi died in the War of Independence.

Narva RiverThe Narva River is the largest river in Estonia and most abounding in water, its length is 77 km, 30 whereof is dammed up above the Narva Reservoir, and its width varies between 250 and 400 metres. As the Lake of Peipsi regulates well the flow of the outflow of the Narva River, there are no larger floods and neither does the river dry up. Until the year 1957 the Narva River was famous for its magnificent waterfalls, but after the construction of the hydroelectric power plant, the river was conducted to a new riverbed and the old one remained dry in the place of the waterfalls. On the one hand, the Narva River is navigable up to Narva from the Gulf of Finland, and on the other hand, from across Lake

Peipsi. However, due to the cliff of the cascade, where the river falls from the height of more than 20 m, there is no waterway through the city.

Historical sightsSõpruse BridgeThe border of Estonia and Russia runs along the Narva River. The Sõpruse Bridge („Bridge of Friendship“), built in 1960, unites not only the two riverbanks, but also two countries.

Town HallThe new administrative centre of Narva — the Town Hall Square — formed out in the XVII century. The architectural ensemble of the square was composed of the Town Hall building, the Stock Exchange building, the town apothecary and several residential houses of rich Swedish bourgeois. Only the Town Hall, built in the years 1668–1671 by V.Hoff-mann on the basis of design by J. Teuffel in Nortern Baroque style, remained intact up till now. The rest of the buildings were destroyed in the course of the World War II.

Additional informationThe foundation Pro Narva was established in 2002 with the purpose of giving Narva back the city centre and bringing new ideas and active life to the historical part of the city. The first thing that should be done is to restore the Town Hall Square of Narva — the square will be paved with round granite plates. A donation campaign has been initiated in order to buy the stones and pave the square.TO

Everybody who wish to contribute to the construction of the basis for the good future of Narva, have the possibility to donate their own stone for Narva Town Hall Square. Every stone will bear a number and thus will always have a relation with the donor. The persons giving larger donations may also have text and pictures, for example their own fingerprints, engraved into the stone. The principal part of the donation campaign will take place via Internet, though, of course also the people not using the Internet will have a chance to make a donation.

Founded in the 1990’s, the Art Gallery is also the art centre of Ida-Virumaa. The permanent exposition is formed of the art collection of Lavretsov, a merchant who lived in Narva in the XIX century, as well as other works of art from the museum funds. In addition, temporary exhibitions of both Estonian and foreign artists are organised. On the last Saturday of May the traditional art party is held in the territory of the Gallery.

Orthodox Resurrection ChurchThe church was built in 1890–1898 for the orthodox workers of the Kreenholm Manufactory. The architect and the manager of the construction works was P. Alish. The church was built in Byzantine style, its towers being 28.5 metres high. The walls and the cupola are laid of local bricks, while the base-ment, staircases and ornaments are made of Finnish granite. There is a beautiful multiscaled iconostasis; the church accommodates up to 2000 people.

Alexander ChurchThe church was constructed by the shareholders of the Kreenholm Manufactory during the years 1881–1884 for the Lutheran workers. The author of the design was O. Hippius, an architect and professor from St. Petersburg, the works were directed by P. Alish. The ground plan of the Romanesque church, has been designed in the shape of regular octagon. The church has room for up to 3000 people. Unfortunately Alexander Church has not entirely preserved, as the 61 m bell tower was destroyed in World War II.

The church has unique acoustics and for its large hall it is used for organising ceremonial occasions and festive culture events in Estonia.

Kreenholm ManufactoryThere were waterfalls with two steps (large and small) on the Narva River above the city, and the Island of Kreenholm

(„Island of Crows“ in Swedish) was situated just between them. The power of the waterfalls was then used for operating grain mills and sawmills. When Russian czar Peter I conquered Narva in 1704, he predicted that the waterfalls ought to be used for the development of large-scale industry.

The Island of Kreenholm was owned by the family of a merc-hant of Narva, Suthoff. In 1856 Ludwig Knoop, a German indus-trialist from Moscow bought the island and started to construct a cotton manufactory there. Building was started on April 30, 1857 and the construction works lasted for about half a century.

Initially, the falling water of the Narva waterfalls gave energy to the spinning machines. The whole Russia was supplied with its production — cotton thread and textile and wadding. In XIX century Narva became one of the most important cities of textile industry in Europe. The develop-ment of industry was promoted by the impressive port and the Baltic railway, uniting St. Petersburg with Narva, Tallinn and Paldiski, that was opened in 1870. By 1913, about 10 500 people were working at the Kreenholm Manufactory.

Tourism groups can book guided tours via the Tourism Information Centre of Narva.

Narva Hospital BuildingSome parts of the former hospital of the Kreenholm Manu-factory are used by the Municipal Hospital of Narva. The construction of the main building (architect A. Vladovski) was completed in 1913, for the 300th anniversary of the Romanov Dynasty. The building got badly damaged in World War II, but the former appearance was restored.

Historical places in the surroundings of NarvaGerman Military Cemetery 10 000 German soldiers killed nearby Narva in World War II are buried in the cemetery. It was founded by the National War Graves League that takes care of the war graves. There are more than 500 such cemeteries in 35 countries looked after by the organisation. In Estonia, 14 similar cemeteries have been restored.Vennashaud GraveThe tragic events of World War II are memorated by an obelisk set up between the bastions of Victoria and Honour for commemorating the victims of the war.

Monument of the North War in SiivertsiThe monument has been established in the honour of the regiments of Preobrazhenski and Semyonovski of the troops of Peter I that were fighting on that spot on November 1, 1700. They did not flee with the rest of the Russian army. Peter I lost that battle. For Karl XII, on the contrary, the result of the Narva battle was the beginning of a successful war.

Tank T-34The monument commemorates the fights of World War II. The assault troops of General Fedyunski crossed the Narva River in this place in February 1944. Narva was occupied by the Soviet army as late as in 1944. The Tank of Narva is the only similar monument exposed in Estonia at the moment.

The Assembly Hall of Narva-JõesuuNarva-Jõesuu is a resort town founded in the late XIX century, famous for its fine sandy beach. Today the city has about 3500 habitants. The Assembly Hall is the symbol of Narva Jõesuu, built in 1912 in Jugendstil. In 1944 it was destroyed by an explosion. Only the northern section of the building has preserved until today.

The parks — Hele and Tume park („Light Park“ and the „Dark Park“, respectively) are worth taking a walk. In the park that is a century old you can find a pond, small bridges and an arbour.

Orthodox Church of Narva-JõesuuThe distinguished wooden church has been constructed in 1893 in Meriküla. It was placed to its present location after World War II.

Shishkin pine According to the legends, this was the place where one of the founders of the Russian realistic art, Ivan Shishkin, used to paint in the 1880’s and 1890’s during his visits to Narva-Jõesuu. The pine is also called the „Kissing Pine“. It is believed that young people who kiss for the first time under this pine will love each other for eternity.

The memorial stone of the landing troops of Meriküla This was the place where the Soviet landing troops of more than 500 men landed in February 14, 1944. The landing troops were caught by the nazi fire and most men were killed at landing or when already on the land in the crossfire that

lasted for several days.

Udria BeachThe pivotal event in the War of Independence was the liberation of Narva in January 19, 1919. The landing troops that disembarked in Udria beach, 600 of whom were Fins, played the key role in this. The memorial stone set up there reminds us of these landing troops.

Hills of Sinimäed The Hills of Sinimäed are formed of three hills: Tornimägi, the Grenader Hill, also known as Põrguhauamägi, and Pargimägi or Lastekodumägi. Because of their important strategic position, the traces of the fortifications that date back to the North War and World War I, as well as World War II can still be seen there. In 1944 the bloodiest battle of the Eastern Front, one the largest battles in Northern Europe, took place in the Hills of Sinimäed. The war operations lasted for 8 months, the number of the dead reached 200 000. The tragic battles are commemorated by a memorial complex with a giant cross on the slope of the Põrguaugu or Grenader Hill.

LaagnaA tragic battle took place near Laagna in January 1919, with Estonians fighting on both sides. The place of the grave of the communist hunting regiment of Viljandi is marked with a memorial stone. Only ruins are left of the building of Laagna estate that once stood there.
