Meet Bruce Miller, the

newly elected member of

the Board of Selectmen. His

name and face is familiar to many because he has

been an involved resident of Nantucket since

1981. His vast business knowledge and familiarity

with island life and issues will surely be of benefit

as he joins the highest local governmental body.

“I’m very excited,” he said of being voted to a

seat on the board. “I’m energized and I’m looking

forward to trying to make a difference. Although

I’m still involved in a lot of things, I have the

time.”

A hard worker and a quick learner, Miller first

came to the island in 1968 as a Maryland high

school student to spend summers employed by

The White Elephant. He began as a dish-

washer, but through his college

years climbed through the ranks

and in 1973 was named manag-

er at The Harbor House — the same year he

earned his master’s degree in business from

Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.

“That was the start of my hotel career,” he

recalled.

In 1974, Miller tried the world of banking but

missed hospitality and returned to that venture.

For several years he managed summer resort

hotels in various locations. In 1980, Walter

Beinecke offered Miller a job as general manager

for his Sherburne Associates portfolio of

Nantucket vacation properties. Miller stayed in

that role for three years, during which time he set-

The Victorians thoughtdaffodils acted as asymbol of regard.

Prince Charles, from theBritish Royal Family, is annually given one

daffodil to act as a form of rent for land on the Isles of Scilly.

The center of the daffodil cup is said to contain the tears of Narcissus, who in Greek legend fell in love with his image reflected in a pool of clear water, and pined his life away.

Daffodil bulbs contain a substance called galanthine,

which has medicinal properties. In fact, it’s

sometimes used in treatments for Alzheimer’s.

Compared to the same period in 2011, first quarter res-

idential sales on Nantucket rose 31 percent. And,

while the average price for a single family home was down

about 5 percent to just over $1.3 million, total dollar vol-

ume for all residential sales was also up nearly 30 percent

to just over $87 million.

“People who have hesitated, wondering if the "bottom "

has come on the island, now see the increase in sales and

don't want to miss the opportunity to purchase,” said

Coffin Real Estate’s Carol Coffin.

“The strengthening market is largely due to renewed

consumer confidence and the awareness that this buyer’s

market will not last forever, added Atlantic East Nantucket

Real Estate’s Ken Beaugrand. “Some of the best opportuni-

ties for buyers have been snapped up the past few months.”

Edward Sanford of Great Point Properties said that

“with soft prices, buyers are recognizing that it is a great

time to purchase. But, we still swing with the larger econ-

omy as a whole. If Europe finally stabilizes and gets some

traction on their debt issues and the US economy responds

positively, then we should see a good sales market this

year. A high S&P and Dow will lead to a good sales envi-

ronment.”

From early April to mid-May, over three million daffodils of

every shape and size bloom on Nantucket. This blossoming is

the focal point of the Annual Daffodil Festival (April 27 –29, 2012).

Organized and sponsored by the Nantucket Chamber of Commerce,

the Annual Daffodil Festival is a full-scale celebration of winter’s

thaw, joyous for both islanders and visitors alike. Daffodils grace the

island’s roadsides, gardens and shop windows with blooms of yel-

low, orange, white and even pale pink.

The Daffodil Festival’s grand event held on Saturday is the

Annual Antique Car Parade, which features over 100 daffodil-

bedecked vintage cars (pre-registration necessary for participation).

After winding through town and across the island to the charming

village of Siasconset, participants join residents and visitors for the

Annual Daffodil Tailgate Picnic. Held on the lush lawns leading into

the village, the picnic boasts fare ranging from elaborate gourmet

cuisine served on fine china to box lunches and burgers. Other high-

lights include the Nantucket Garden Club’s Annual Daffodil Show,

Children’s Daffodil Parade, Daffy Hat Pageant and Daffodil Dog

Parade.

History of the Daffodil FestivalWhat has evolved into a weekend full of fun events and activities

began in 1974 when the late Jean MacAusland (former Nantucket

summer resident and the publisher of Gourmet Magazine) persuad-

ed the Nantucket Garden Club to invite the American Daffodil

Society to sponsor a daffodil show on the island. Their goal was to

plant over one million daffodil bulbs, with the first planting taking

place in the autumn of 1974 along Milestone Road. Unfortunately,

many of the bulbs did not survive, as they had been planted in a

straight line too close to the road and mowed down before they had

a chance to store food for winter. For the next planting, the Garden

Club set the bulbs out in random bunches farther from the road. This

“drift planting” protected the bulbs and gave their blooms a more

natural setting.

To add to the festivities in 1978, Mrs. MacAusland and H. Flint

Ranney planned the first “Annual Nantucket Garden Club Vintage

Motor Car Outing,” with 19 antique vehicles registered. The

Chamber of Commerce assumed the responsibility of organizing the

parade and picnic in 1980.

The Nantucket Islands Land Bank gained $366.750.02 in

transfer tax fees for the week ending April 13. To date in the year

2012, the Land Bank gained an estimated total of $2,529,974.27

in transfer fees. Land Bank income is derived mostly from the col-

lection of a two-percent transfer tax on real estate transactions, sub-

ject to certain exemptions. The Land Bank acquires, holds, and man-

ages land for open space and recreation on Nantucket. Other revenue

sources include investments, private contributions, leasing of proper-

ties at 2 Massasoit Bridge Road, 159 Hummock Pond Road, and 22

Broad St.

Many of the property transfers recorded with the Land Bank are

exempt from the 2-percent transfer fee using one of 13 exemptions

allowed by the Land Bank Act as follows: A; transfer to government

entity, B; transfer which, without additional consideration, confirms,

corrects, modifies, or supplements a previously made transfer, C;

transfer made as a gift without consideration, D; certain transfers to

and from a trust, E; transfer via death or bankruptcy, F; transfer made

in partition of land and improvements, G; transfer to charitable organ-

izations, H; transfer to a mortgagee in foreclosure of the mortgage, I;

certain transfers made to or within a corporation or partnership, J; cer-

tain transfers out of a corporation or partnership, K; transfer due to

divorce, L; transfer of property that is partially personal property and

partially real property, M; certain first-time property buyers (applies

to the first $400,000).

The above explanations are abbreviated because the language

explaining these exemptions is too lengthy to print in this section

every week. If you’re curious about a certain exemption, go to the

Nantucket Islands Land Bank Web site for complete information on

the exemptions and the land bank’s governing bylaws: www.nan-

tucketlandbank.org. Or visit the office at 22 Broad. You can reach the

Land Bank at 508-228-7240.

tled on the island and by coincidence

met Frank Lorenzo who was a major

figure in the airline industry. In 1983,

Miller went to work for Lorenzo, com-

muting to New York, Texas and

California with new challenges such as

being one of his advertising directors

and in marketing. Though he said that

in those experiences he established

relationships that have lasted to this

day, Lorenzo’s airline conglomerate

eventually ran into financial difficulties

and Miller switched gears.

His next move was into the restau-

rant field on Nantucket with Larry

Whelden. As partners, in 1995 they

purchased American Seasons restau-

rant, which Miller co-owned until the

two amicably decided to split their

interests and Miller took over as princi-

pal owner. Though he sold the business

in 2003, he has stayed on to the present

as American Seasons’ business manag-

er handling much of its administrative

duties.

He also “dabbles,” as he puts it, by

being involved with many island non-

profits and other community commit-

ments. Miller was a 14-year member of

the Finance Committee, stepping down

“to recharge my batteries” in 2008 at

the end of his last term. He was a

trustee on the Nantucket Historical

Association’s board when it was

rebuilding the Whaling Museum.

About five years ago he became a

director on the Cape Air board.

Currently, Miller is on the boards of the

Egan Maritime Institute and Nantucket

Comedy Festival, and is an investor

and a director with a public software

company.

“I try to play a lot of Bridge,

although I’m not always successful,”

he joked. “That’s my number one

hobby.”

His other personal interests include

traveling with his wife, Jeanne, who

was a teacher and Head of School with

The Children’s House.

Now, with all that is going on in his

life — associations he truly enjoys —

Miller says he will perfect his time

management skills.

“One of the great things about

Nantucket is when you join nonprofit

boards you find yourself rubbing

elbows with some very interesting peo-

ple. I want to be sure I have time for my

responsibilities, but I don’t want to

give anything up.”

Miller, continued from page 1

is more of a function of the price point properties are

selling as opposed to price vulnerability.

This year’s rental market is also showing strong

signs of life. Beagrand notes that bookings for the

summer season are up nearly 30 percent over last

year at this time, and said he is seeing an increase in

requests for year-round and seasonal rental homes,

“which indicates that the employment picture on

Nantucket is improving, another good sign that the

economy is on the rebound,” he said.

Assuming that the economy holds up, “it will be a

good season for restaurants and retail,” added Sanford.
