N o one can ever call Vern Laux a birdbrain, even though he is crazy about all our feathered friends. Laux is the esteemed resident naturalist for the spectacular Linda Loring Nature Foundation, and he knows whereof he speaks when it comes to all types of wildlife. Birds, however, are his hands-down favorite species. “I always thought it was something that would go away, but it just gets worse,” he said of his unending passion. “I guess I became a birdwatcher,” he reflected.

He was teased about his newly found pastime by guys on his football team, but perse-

vered. In his junior year in high school Laux was invited to work at the Wellfleet Bay

Wildlife Sanctuary owned by Mass Audubon, a job he continued for five summers and that

sparked his interest in shorebirds.

He had been conducting Nantucket’s Christmas bird count for decades when four years

ago the Linda Loring Nature Foundation became a reality and he was contacted by its board

of directors. They hired Kitty Pochman as executive director and created the naturalist posi-

tion specifically for Laux.

“It has been a nice fit,” said Laux, who studied speech communications and wildlife ecol-

ogy at the University of Arizona.

Laux rises each morning at 4:30 a.m. “As soon as the birds start singing.”

His work at the 86-acre sanctuary at the Head of Long Pond entails many aspects includ-

ing property maintenance and mammal and insect inventories, but the foundation’s main

thrust is education. Laux presents programs for the island’s public and private school stu-

dents, takes youth on various field trips, leads summer bird walks and is in the thick of help-

ing finalize the first Nantucket Birder’s Festival to run this fall from October 20 to 23. The

festival will feature field trips, evening keynote speakers, bird banding demonstrations, tours

to Great Point and much more.

In addition to his duties involving the sanctuary, he hosts a weekly “Bird News” radio pro-

gram on the Cape and Islands station 91.1 and writes a Saturday column on birds for the

Cape Cod Times. In the future he will be a pivotal part of the refuge center’s expansion to

offer more educational programs and he hopes to produce nature films.

Laux stays plenty busy with his job, which he loves, but makes time for himself when pos-

sible. What does he like to do in his spare moments? Well, take a guess.

“I go birding,” he said, an ever-present twinkle of excitement in his eyes. “I love to fish, and

you can do them both at the same time. I’m not kidding about bird watching. That’s what I do.”

large profits from the East India trade as well as whaling.”

Indeed, Taber, a carpenter, bought the land from William

Rawson, a successful whaling captain.

The property changed hands several times, including a

period of ownership by “caulker” Daniel Moulton, until it

returned to its captain-owner roots in 1846. That year,

Frederick Swain paid $1,100 for the property.

According to the HABS report, Swain was master of the

whaling ship “Susan” for three voyages from 1829 to 1837.

The “Susan” was also home to the scrimshaw artist Frederick

Myrick from 1826 to 1829. Myrick’s much-prized “Susan”

teeth have sold at auction for tens of thousands of dollars.

Swain’s ownership was short-lived, however. The

Nantucket Institution for Savings foreclosed upon the prop-

erty in 1847. The HABS report speculates that the Great Fire

of 1846 may have affected Swain’s financial standing.

In 1859, Lewis Imbert purchased 45 India and began a

period of single-family ownership that stretched until 1927,

when the heirs of Ann Maria Imbert sold the home to

Harrison Gardner.

It was during the Imbert family’s ownership that Captain

Benjamin Whitford Joy and his family lived at the residence.

According to the Prospect Hill Cemetery website, Joy’s

father was also a ship captain. Captain Samuel Joy died

when his son was a year old while on a voyage to China.

Whitford Joy was no stranger to high-seas adventure.

Having been shipwrecked by a typhoon in the Philippines,

he made his way to Manila, where he found the “Lucille,”

captained by John P. Conway of Nantucket. Joy returned to

the island aboard the ship.

While he never owned 45 India, Joy figures in its lore.

During his time at the house, it is said he could be seen car-

rying a telescope while walking up and down a veranda that

was then attached along the home’s Hussey Street side.

In the same year he bought 45 India, Harrison Gardner

flipped it in a sale to Nathaniel Lowell. Lowell sold in 1930

to Adelaide Young before buying the property back from

Young in 1939. During the Youngs’ ownership, a “shedlike

addition on the west side served as a small store,” according

to the HABS report. According research carried out by

Preservation Institute: Nantucket (PI:N) in 2000, “the

Youngs ran a general store called the Wee Shop and repaired

bikes, the forerunner of Young's Bicycle Shop.” The bicycle

shop was founded in 1931. By the time of the HABS report,

the “shedlike addition” had been removed.

It was also during this time that the house’s address

changed for the final time. India Street became known as

such around 1939, before which it was called Pearl Street.

In 1972, Mort and Reva Schlesinger began their tenure as

the longest-serving single owners of the Rescom

Taber/Captain Joy House. Given their interest in antiques,

the couple wanted an old house in town, Mort Schlesinger

recalled. What they found has turned out to be part residence

and part research project.

We’ve been very interested in preserving as much of the

interior as we could,” Schlesinger said. “We’ve even put

some of it back to what we and other preservationists

thought it looked like in older times.” That meant the china

closet in the dining room disappeared, replaced by a closet

under the stairs – “very, very common in early 19th century

houses,” Schlesinger said.

The wide pine board floors have likewise remained

untouched. In terms of interacting with the past, of the

home’s seven fireplaces, the Schlesingers have on occasion

used one for cooking.

The couple, who became year-round residents in 1980,

know their home from the bottom up. That includes an

inspection of the crawlspace beneath the house, where

Schlesinger said, there are features that indicate that part of

the house may have been brought from elsewhere. Although

none of his speculations are definite, Schlesinger said he

imagines the possibility of the house having been a one- or

two-room home, to which subsequent additions were made.

An oval-shaped brick cistern survives beneath the house

as well, as does an authentic root cellar at the house’s north-

ern edge. Although vegetable storage ended long ago, the

root cellar was for a time used to house wine the

Schlesingers made themselves.

The home, which the HABS report notes as typical for its

time period, will remain much as it is for long after the

Schlesingers occupancy ends. The couple have both includ-

ed easements in their wills that will protect the home inside

and out, Mort Schlesinger said.

The easements will prevent changes to the home’s foot-

print and any interior feature, although exceptions have been

granted for the kitchen and bathrooms.

“We want to preserve the house,” Schlesinger said.

For nearly four decades — almost 20 percent of the time

the building has stood — the Schlesingers have each been its

owner and, perhaps more importantly, its steward.

“I think,” Schlesinger said of the latter characterization,

“that’s an adequate word for it.”
