Music Genres

• Despite there being over a hundred music genres and sub categories, the main genres are what the majority of music videos will fall under. I intend to look at some of the artist who fall under these genres and examine what you expect from their CD covers, music videos and other promotional products.

My Genre

The genre I selected for my music video is “Punk rock”.Punk rock is a rock music genre that developed between 1974 and 1976 in the united states. Punk bands typically use short or fast paced songs, with hard edged melodies and singing styles and often some new interesting lyrics. These bands mostly include self produced recordings and distribute them through informal channels.In early 1970s the term ‘punk’ was first used in relation to rock music by some American critics to describe the garage bands and their members.

PUNK ROCK

• By 1976 bands such as ‘The Clash’ and ‘Television’ and ‘Patti Smith’ were recognized as the best in relation to punk rock. And from the following years punk rock entered in its growth period and slowly and gradually it started spreading around the world. Punk rock has its own distinctive style of clothing which includes offensive T-shirts, leather jackets, spike bands and jewellary and other interesting stuff.• Punk rock has its own vocals which sometimes sound nasal and lyrics

are often shouted instead of sung in a sense, particularly in hardcore rock style.

The Band

The band I choose for my music video was “THE KOMINAS”.The Kominas are a punk-rock band formed in 2005 by Pakistani-Americans living in Boston. They rose to cultural prominence for progressing the genre of Muslim Punk in the United States. Their dance-oriented sound characteristically blends 1977 punk stylings, with influences from rock from around the world (like Turkey and Iran), Punjabi folk music, surf rock, reggae, disco and dub. Their songs are often self-referential and situationalist, often challenging listeners to re-evaluate their assumptions of what it means to be American, or Muslim, or punk.In 2005, with the release of just two songs on the internet website MySpace, The Kominas found themselves subjects of national news pieces and film and radio documentaries. Initially self-labelled as Bollywood Punk, the band adopted the label "Taqwacore", in reference to a book called "The Taqwacores" by American novelist Michael Muhammad Knight, which imagines what a would be American Muslim Punk scene would look like. This connection quickly fascinated American and International Media, which led to much being written about this unique example of life-imitating-art, and many international tours with the author. Many fans of this phenomenon felt that this was a necessary complicating counter-narrative to a simplistic, and largely Islamophobic post-9/11 American media landscape.

a punk rock is all about as it includes all the qualities of what punk rock should have.• Lyrics:• I’ve got a knife yes I do

CONTRACT

I contacted Shahjehan Khan one of the lead guitarist of the band ‘The KOMINAS’ and on behalf of them he allowed me to use their song for Non Commercial use and these are some proofs and the contract signed by them.
