Indie RockThis is an ‘indie rock’ magazine with artic monkeys featuring on the front cover. This magazine cover demonstrates sophistication as there is a simple black and white colour scheme- this however makes the advertisement stand out from the page as these are in brighter/bolder colours. This is an insight on what my magazines cover could look like so helps my research. The magazines masthead is basic as it has a curved text instead of a bolder – more square one. Arctic Monkeys are Indie Rock icons so is appropriate to the magazines brand name and draw in their target audience as they represent its genre.

This ‘MOJO’ magazines contents page also follows the black and white colour scheme which shows how basic yet effective this can be. The colour scheme also involves red which stands out from the other colours used. The bold title saying mojo stands out on the page and clearly indicates what magazine it is. There is only one image which takes up half of the page so shows that it is the main focus which draws in the attention of the audience. This contents follows a different layout which tells me that if I was to choose the sub-genre ‘indie-rock’ that I do not have to follow a certain way to lay out my contents page.

Mojos double page spread uses columns to structure the page. There is a larger image taking up a quarter of the page which draws in the readers attention, there are also smaller images on the page with small writing underneath so the reader can see what the pictures are about- demonstrating many places the indie rock band- ‘the go-betweens’ have visited/preformed at.

Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom in the 1980s. Indie rock is extremely diverse, with sub-genres that include indie pop, jangle pop and lo-fi. The typical instruments used within ‘indie rock’ are keyboard, bass drums and a guitar. Indie pop is a genre of alternative rock music that originated in the United Kingdom in the mid-1980s, with its roots in Scottish post-punk bands on the Postcard Records label in the early 1980s. Examples of ‘indie pop’ are the XX, the stone roses, Bastille, Florence and the machine and Noah and the Whale.

RockThis is a demonstration of a rock magazine with its brand name being ‘KERRANG!’. This front cover follows a colour scheme of muted colours such as grey and black with some yellow- this aligns itself with the sub-genre of this magazine as the dark colours used are appropriate for ‘rock’. The cover line used on this cover is typical of this magazine as they always stand out from the rest of the page as they are always situated off-centre and are in bold writing to show who features inside. Its masthead is in comparison with the theme of the magazine (rock) as its text is bold and ‘in your face’.

This contents page does not follow a colour scheme as there are various colours used such as black, red, yellow, white, and grey. This tells me that when I come to make a contents page that I do not have to necessarily follow a colour scheme and it can still be effective. In the centre of the page there is the masthead name saying ‘KERRANG! THIS WEEK’ in bold writing to remind the audience of the brand name and the sub-genre they’re reading. There is a main image taking up half of the page creating that as the main focus. The contents is at the bottom half of the page whereas at the top there is a main image with overlapping smaller images to show which other bands/artists are featuring within the magazine also.

This DPS follows a colour scheme of black white and grey. The band that the article if featuring is situated on the whole of the right hand page-they are all dressed in black, this has an effect on the audience as this is what people who enjoy rock music are stereotyped for. KERRANG! Uses columns and colours to structure its page as some text is in black and some in white. The word ‘alcohol’ is the only word in the sub title in large font/bold letters- this demonstrates which sub-genre this magazine is aligned with as it shows wreck less attitudes- much like ‘rock and roll’.

Rock music is a genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll" in the United States in the 1950s, and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States. It has its roots in 1940s' and 1950s' rock and roll, itself heavily influenced by rhythm and blues and country music. Rock music also influenced other genres such as blues and folk, and used influences from jazz, classical and other musical sources. Examples of rock artists/bands are Paramore, Imagine Dragons, Hozier and Fall Out Boy.

Pop‘Top of the pops’ is one of the most popular pop magazines- always using the current faces of pop on their covers and within their magazine. The front cover uses feminine colours such as pink/purple, perhaps to suggest its target audience as mainly young girls/ pre teens read this. The text is used all over the page to create a fuller/more appealing impact on its potential buyers. The colours used/layout used is typical of its brand name as there is many colours that could appeal to its audience and many advertisements and cover lines to draw people in.

This contents page follows a more stricter colour scheme using white, purple and pink to stand out on the page as the purple and pink stand out from its background. There are many images used on this contents page- some larger than other to suggest importance. Text is used at the top “inside your mag”, all down the right side of the page and at the bottom to show contents- some of the text comes alongside a picture to demonstrate what is featuring. The page numbers are in bold black circles which stand out to the reader as they are the only aspect which is dark.

This double page spread follows a colour scheme of black, pink and white. There is a main image used on the right hand side of the page and there all smaller images all around the page to entice the reader. This double page spread uses feminine colours to suggest its target audience as this creates a girly effect. There is also a boarder around this page to make the theme magical-like to give a positive impact upon the audience.

Pop music (a term that originally derives from an abbreviation of "popular") is a genre of popular music which originated in its modern form in the 1950s, deriving from rock and roll. The terms "popular music" and "pop music" are often used interchangeably, even though the former is a description of music which is popular (and can include any style). As a genre, pop music is very eclectic, often borrowing elements from other styles including urban, dance, rock, Latin and country. Examples of pop artists/bands would include, One Direction, Taylor Swift, Rhianna, Cher Llyod and Cheryl Cole.

Hip-Hop/Urban music MagazinesThis magazine features current faces of Hip-hop and urban music- on this occasion its featuring Eminem- one of the most popular faces of urban music which everybody recognises. The model is shown with his arms out covered in tattoos- which suggests its target audience as they are stereotyped to have these aspects of ‘the urban life’. The masthead is in a bold red font which is appealing to its target audience- the magazine cover follows a colour scheme of white, red and black. The text is in black with some red which aligns itself with the cover lines, the masthead and what the model is wearing.

This magazines contents page follows a colour scheme of brown, cream and white. The white text stands out from its brown background so is appealing and easy for the audience to read. There is a model taking up the right hand side of the page which suggests who Is featuring within the magazine. What the model is wearing is in comparison to the colour scheme as he is wearing brown and cream- which are the main colours used. All of the text is on the left hand side of the page which is easy for the reader to notice.

This double page spread is featuring another current face of urban/hip-hop music and he is situated on the right hand side of the double page spread. The model used is typical of its brand as he is seen to be smoking- which is what people who enjoy this genre of music are stereotyped for. All of the text is on the left side of this DPS which suggests to the audience what the article is about as the image takes up the whole of the opposing page.

Hip hop music, also called hip-hop, rap music, or hip-hop music, is a music genre consisting of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching, break dancing, and graffiti writing. ClassicalThis magazine cover is a demonstration of the sub-genre of classical music. This cover follows a colour scheme of white, brown and black. The model used is typical of its brand name as she is a classical music artist. This cover is sophisticated because of the colours/model used so suggests its target audience as the older generation are stereotyped to listen to this genre of music. The text is in white which stands out from its dark coloured background.

This contents does not necessarily follow a colour scheme as the colours used are black, white, red, yellow and grey. All of the text is at the bottom half of the page and there is images at the top half. The images suggest what is featuring ibn the magazine and the text displays the content the reader is looking for. The pictures are captioned using black and white font to stand out from their image. These other colours used are also sophisticated as it aligns itself with the front cover.

This double page spread follows a colour scheme of white brown and black which is typical of its brand name as its target audience if for sophisticated people of the sort. The text is in columns- some is darker than others to structure the page. The model used is on the right hand side taking up the whole page to suggest what the ‘Q/A’ article is about/who is featuring.
