MOTORCYCLE RACING ACTION CONTRIBUTORS
The local motocross community lost a true friend and hero in Mike Sharkey in early July 2009. Most people at the track knew him simply as “Sharkey.” He was the guy who always had a smile on his face and would do anything to help anybody, as long as he wasn’t taking a nap at the time.
Mike has two boys. His older son, Alex, used to be a regular around the tracks before heading off to college, and Patrick is currently racing and qualified for Loretta’s in the 250 C division.
Mike was taken from us early in a street bike accident just prior to the Fourth of July weekend. He was a longtime motorcycle rider and enthusiast who was employed at Lebanon Valley Cycles and a regular at Sleepy and the Dutchmen. Mike, who recently celebrated a wedding anniversary with his wife, will be missed by many and fondly remembered as the guy on the
“Factory Suzuki” that entertained us all at Sleepy’s Annual Labor Day Mechanics Race. Mike, thanks for being our friend, and we’ll see you someday again in “Motocross Heaven.”

After being off the track for most of the season due to reinjuring his knee playing around, Tyler Stacey returned to racing and traded wins with Ryan Connelly as Susquehanna Speedway held its first race of the season on the small half mile. Connelly held off Stacey and Becca Zafia to take the closely contested 250 B final on his Pool and Spa Place/Don’s Kawasaki machine. Connelly also scored the 250 Sportsman final.
Stacey showed his track rust early when he fell exiting the track after a practice session. He got things loosened up by the Open B final. Connelly led him, Tyler Cunningham and Kevin Bills off the second turn. Stacey stayed close the entire distance and got a fantastic drive on his Stacey Racing/Kriebel Security Suzuki off turn two on the final lap for the lead. His win was assured when Connelly drifted high in three.
Mike Klopp scored an extremely hard-fought win in the 500 2 Valve final over Rick Washak and Jim Chapman. It was going to be good when they came off four three-wide with Washak leading lap one. Chapman led the second lap, while Klopp led three, with numerous changes in between. At the finish, Klopp won by a length over Washak.
Klopp was also handed the
40 + win when early leader Tom Majeski broke on the second lap. Mike Mester and Ray Jenkins followed, but Buzz Skiles got rolling, taking third at the end of the second lap and getting by Mester on the next lap.
Majeski started a close fourth in the Open A final behind Garret Wilson, Jordan Harris and Dalton Winkler. He was second off four on the second lap and shot into the lead off two the next lap. This time the machine stayed together.
Ken Yoder took point in the Sportsman final from Cory Strickler, Brody Miller, Harris and Cody Gillern. The energetic Miller moved into second off two on the third lap and dove under Yoder off four the following lap for the lead and held on for the win.
The Varneses scored a two generation double with dad Kevin going wire to wire to win the 30 + from Yoder and Klopp. His son, Ryan, also went wire to wire to win the 85 (7-11) over Cameron Smith, Allen Fogle, Ken Kolsovsky and Kyle McGrane. Fogle got by Smith on the second lap, and Kolsovsky dropped to fifth.
Shawn Baer had an easy time winning the Open Twin final over Lew Woods, Wilson, Strickler and Mester, with Chapman coming out on top of the 50 + over Washak and Mike Keane.
The Winsetts also had a multi-generation win with grandson Dylan topping the 85 (12-15) and grandpa John
taking advantage of heat winner Bob Kline stalling on the line to win the Quad final on his backup machine.
The 50 Shaft had some position swapping in the pack. Damon Ream led Racer Stacey, Doug Cook, Baden Winsett and Tyler Varnes, with Cook, Winsett and Varnes trading spots all over the track. On the final lap, Stacey ran down the back straight side by side for the lead, but just came up short.

drought in West Virginia? That’s easy…schedule a Masters MX race at Tomahawk Raceway, and you’re guaranteed to get 2 to 3 inches of rain over the course of several days! At least that’s been the story in 2009 for both the May 9 and June 6 events. But not to worry; track owner Chad Gochenour and his crew know all the tricks to turn a mucked-up track into a great day of motocross racing. And that’s just what they did, aided by rescheduling the race from Saturday to Sunday, June 7. We enjoyed an almost mud-free track by Sunday, soft enough to rut up and get good and bumpy like motocross is supposed to be. To top that off, Tomahawk ran backwards for the first time in almost three years, so it was almost like riding a brand-new track that flowed well and challenged riders just as much as when run the other direction.Thanks, as always, go to Chad and all of his track crew for getting things into raceable condition and especially for beating the ruts back into submission at various times during the day. It couldn’t have been a much better day for racing, especially when Travis Mong from Shenendoah Photographics is there to capture the action shots!
So how about the racing? With the A classes running eight laps and everyone else going six, there was plenty of action throughout the day. Action began with track owner Chad Gochenour reminding everyone in 25+A that he’s still a top A rider by running away with moto 1 before graciously sitting out moto 2 to avoid too much home track advantage (his home is literally at the track).
Series regular Jeff McClure posted a 2-2 finish to top Joe Yagloski’s 4-3, further extending his lead in the class. The 40+A class ran off the second gate, with Mike Crocker going 1-1 to sweep the day over Todd Harper’s 2-3 and Drew Morris’ 4-2. Scott Saville ran 3-6 to top Brooke Tyler’s 5-5, rounding out the top five finishers.
Moving to race 2, the 30+B class led off with David Thomas and Ryan Anderson taking the top two spots overall over current series leader Mike Dempster. Mike’s 1-3 finishes were good enough for 3rd overall and moved him still further ahead in the series, and Keith Clemente rounded out the top four with a 4-5 day. Off the second gate, 45+B rider David Capane posted 1-1 scores
to top Gery Vandervliet’s 3-2 for the overall. Series leader Vandervliet picked up valuable points to extend his lead, and Mark Howser (2-4 for the day) moved into 3rd place in the series over Dave Hogge at this event. The 60+ class featured Ted Veneman’s 1-1 sweep over Fred Kostenbader (3-2) and Rich Pettit (2-3). These 60+ guys are still tough racers, going fast and riding two classes besides being a group of the nicest guys you’ll encounter in the pits between motos. That’s MX the way it’s supposed to be.
Race 3 featured a rerun of 25+A, with Jeff McClure and Joe Yagloski trailering Ryan Gates and Chad Gochenour, who took the moto wins. The 45+A class was a sweep for Scott Saville
(1-1), besting his 4th OA finish in 30+A. Mike Farmer, 2009 50+ series leader, and 2008 45+A Champion Brooke Tyler swapped the 2nd and 3rd spots with Farmer claiming the 2nd moto and 2nd overall for the day. In Race 4, Nick Delcher used a 4-1 finish to capture 1st for the day and retain his series lead over series #2 Lannie Branham’s 2-3 finish. Then Jim Handley picked up a couple more points lead in the series chase by going 1-2 over Gery Vandervliet’s 3-1. These two are running very tightly, with only 5 points separating them after six series motos in 2009. Dave Hogge used a 4-3 finish to keep himself on the podium today and cleanly in 3rd for the series.
Race 5 action included 250/450 Support, Collegeboy,
and Schoolboy. Matt Kazar’s 2-1 finishes gave him the OA in 250/450 Support, with Michael Thompson’s 5-4 being good enough for 2nd OA ahead of Nate Vandervliet’s 3-6 in 3rd. Thompson’s finish for the day kept him at the top of the series standings, though he lost a point to Zach Guilday’s 8-2 finish and 4th OA for the day. Derek Dupont took Schoolboy honors (1-1), and Robert Rexiode captured the Collegeboy win (2-1). That brought us to the last race set of the day, with the 50+ gate going first. Mike Farmer, a former top D7 expert in the 80’s, rejoined the racing scene this year and has been at the front of the pack in every class. Despite a couple of soil samples, he turned in a 1-1 finish to take the OA over the ever-quick Rick Wenger (2-2) and Tim
Titcomb (3-3). Dave Resch made come-from-behind dashes in both motos for the 4th OA with a 7-4 score. The front of the 13-rider 50+ pack would have been even more crowded if Dave hadn’t held meetings with other riders in the first turn of each moto! In 30+C, Mark Wilson’s 2-1 was good enough for the 1st OA over Shane Shipley, and it keeps him comfortably in the lead for the series. Speaking of Shane, he went 4-1 for 2nd OA and in doing so put a solid lock on 2nd in the series as well. If you’ve never seen Shane ride, check him out. Despite being unable to stand unassisted, Shane clamps himself on his bike (complete with footplates and bars to enclose his legs) and twists the throttle to the stops, winning the 2nd moto at Tomahawk despite the tough bumps and ruts that formed throughout the day. Hats off to Shane for keeping the love of racing going despite the extra challenges!
The day ended early (4:30 PM), and everyone went home with all the MX track time they could handle, including the 30 minute practice sessions after every two motos that serve to break up the day and provide riding opportunity for those who want to ride but not race (and still catch a good day of race spectating). President’s CornerD7 President’s Corner We’re at the championship part of the year. This month represents that part of the year when championships are won and riders position themselves for a run toward their individual series title.
The amateur Dirt Track finals took place at Du Quoin State Fairgrounds in Illinois over the July 4th weekend. Our area riders who had success are as follows: Tristan Avery, Dan Bromley, Joe Bromley, Dustin Healey, Tristan Avery, Dan Bromley, Joe Bromley, Dustin Healey, Derrick Hirsh, Dalton Gauthier, Erin Kissinger, Kyle McGrane, Brandon Price, Eric Stump, Ryan Varnes, Tyler Varnes, Dalton Winkler, and Rebecca Zafia. Congratulations to all of those riders, parents, and sponsors who brought home the gold for our region. We all wish you continued success through the rest of the year.We are very lucky to have a Grand National Dirt Track here in our own back yard. The Hagerstown, Maryland, national will run on July 25th. By the time you read this, the race will most likely have taken place. Our area riders are competing very successfully this year. Riders in the top 20 on the Grand National Twins and Singles series are Jared Mees ( he’s moved to Michigan), Jacob Johnson, John Lewis, Chris Carr, Brandon Robinson, and Donald Mullin (who I believe made his first National points). On the AMA Pro Singles scene we have Shayna Texter, Austin Greenland, Cory Strickler, John Long, Jake Shoemaker, and Mike Poe. All of these racers have raced on our local racetracks and will be racing at Hagerstown. You also have a chance to see some of these riders racing the first two Wednesday and Friday nights in August at the BCTRA Timonium State Fairground races. Go to www.bctra.com for more information.
The motocross amateur nationals will be held at Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. When you’re reading this article, one of the following riders will be racing there: Michael Anderson, Tony Archer, Jarek Balkavic, Joseph Balkavic, Mason Bowen, Amanda Brown, Daniel Corbin, Joshua Corbin, Casey Curtis, Shane Desell, Dawson Evitts, Gavin Evitts, Nick Ferrell, Alexander Frye, Kara Groves, William Groves, Garrett Hoffman, Gage Keith, Tyler Kirchner, Cameron Page, Shawn Rothstein, Jacob Runkles, Broc Schmelyun, Cory Shock, James Shockey, Heather Snyder, Austin Toskov, and Chase Yentzer. We all are
hoping for the most success for all of these riders and their parents and sponsors. On the National scene our area has not had the success that the above Dirt Track professional series has provided. We have no riders in the top 20, and at this moment I believe we’ve lost any rider in the top 100. Barry Carsten has always been our pillar on the professional racing schedule. The late Kevin Crine and Tom Welch were consistently top 100 riders. Travis Prastrana and Jason Lawrence were the number one riders, but other personal agendas have taken them to other areas and other sports. We were really hoping those two gentlemen could have kept with the program.
Our hope is that the internationally famous Budds Creek National will bring us a new rising star from one of our riders to rally around. We all should take advantage of having a motocross national right here in our backyard. Saturday, August 22, should be a day that we should all mark on our calendars and be at Budds Creek to support all of our local racers and support your favorite factory star. This is the premier show in the area. Don’t miss out. There will also be a regional qualifier the following day for all of the new and up and coming stars to obtain points toward their professional license. This will also be a day to watch and race with the area’s best riders. Keep your feet on the pegs, go fast, and take chances.

Hello again!There are two Ultimate Series races left on the schedule.
The first one is round #9 at Hurricane Hills Sports Center on Aug. 8 and 9. The 8th will be open practice for bikes only, and the 9th will be Ultimate Series MX Round #9. Manufacturer contingencies will be awarded, and there will be $2,000 of D6MXPG “Motocross Bucks” distributed. This year’s District 6 UMXS will end at Miles Mountain Motocross on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5 and 6, with Saturday practice for bikes only and a “Saturday night under the lights” Supercross series (race #4) and the final D6MXPG Ultimate Motocross round on Sunday. Pretty exciting finale to a fabulous 2009 Ultimate Motocross series season!
Of course, the D6MXPG and its affiliated promoters and clubs have always had an interest in providing you, the motocross racer, with some exciting motocross racing for the entire season. The 2009 schedule of motocross events is loaded with all kinds of awesome racing. I’d like to devote the rest of the President’s Corner to giving you some indication as to what’s happening in D6 Motocross. Our nine D6 MX facilities are loaded with some super motocross events for the balance of the year. For the actual remaining schedules you can refer to the websites of each one of the facilities or their ads in MRA. Here are some highlights of some of the great events you can look forward to here at the D6 motocross tracks. Keep in mind that all events are D6MXPG sanctioned.
Happy Ramblers - Aug 1 & 2, Oct. 10 & 11, Nov. 7 & 8 will offer D6 advancement point races, MDRA and PAMX races with double track points and awesome trophies at their events.
Sleepy Hollow Motocross Park - Between July 26 and Sept. 27, you’ll find some serious bike and quad motocross racing at a newly designed track that the riders really enjoy racing on...”in the heart of D6 MX.”
Doublin Gap MX Park - Between July 19 and Nov. 1 at one of “PA’s Best MX Facilities,” you’ll find rider appreciation days, PAMX and MDRA championship events, factory contingencies, ATV only race days, practice schedules and group/private motocross lessons.
Raceway Park - One of the district’s oldest motocross facilities will host between Aug. 2 and Nov. 8 their 17th annual Vet and Vintage Reunion, the 33rd annual Kawasaki Team Green MX Race of Champions (KROC), and the 24th annual New Jersey State MX Championship, which is a D34 Tri State Qualifier.
Evansville MX Park - Quad and bike motocross racing
events are plentiful from Aug. 2 through Sept. 20 with the Delmarva series, Evansville Quad motocross series, quad Ultimate Series Round #10 and special race-day sponsors who will provide additional awards for the motocross racer - bike and quad alike.
Hurricane Hills Sports Center - It’s always been a special treat to race the balance of the summer and throughout the fall at HHSC with open practice and seven motocross event weekends for bikes and quads, including the 27th annual PA State Championships (Sept. 12 & 13) with the 6-foot tall trophies and the first FREE Ultimate Tony D MX School as some special highlights.
Dutchmen MX - Another “in the heart of D6 MX.” The Delmarva series will come to Dutchmen MX Park on the Aug. 29 & 30 weekend, and for you Hare Scramble enthusiasts, the PA State Hare Scramble round #13 will close out the Dutchmen MX season.
Pagoda Motorcycle Club - One of the many motocross facilities also “in the heart of D6 MX” finishes out the season starting in mid-August with excellent MX and SX events, the Sept. 20 Delmarva MX Series, the second annual VPE Ray’s Yamaha Big Bucks Day on Oct. 11, and a November Turkey Poker Run and Junk Car Race. Pagoda will also host the second FREE Ultimate Tony D MX School
Miles Mountain MX - Between July 25 and Sept. 27, Miles Mountain will feature a freestyle BMX and trials bike thriller, Saturday Night Under the Lights Supercross series, a quad Ultimate series event and round #10 of the D6 MXPG Bike Ultimate series Sept. 5 and 6.

MDRA President’s CornerWe’ve just completed the seventh round of the MDRA Series at Budds Creek. Jonathan Beasley was thankful he decided to hold a MDRA event, and we are pleased to say he hosted a fine event. This was the first time in two years he had over 600 riders for a series race. Again, thanks to all you riders and the team that puts the MDRA series together.
To all you motocrossers that feel like there is not enough time to get things done...I feel your pain. The next MDRA race is this coming weekend at Doublin Gap, and Loretta Lynn’s is just two weeks away. Chase and I are in full training and riding six days a week. Good luck to all of you who have made it. We look forward to racing with you in Tennessee!
Keep your eye out for the 2009 Suzuki Shootout flyer. The race will be at Pleasure Valley in October. We need all MDRA riders to attend to help defend the title we won last year. Let’s go out there and bring the title back!

It has been an exciting start to the 2009 season, and we are now halfway through the season. With the addition of 100% payout for 250 A and Open A we have had some exciting racing.
Additionally, we have added many contingencies that continue to provide significant benefit to our members. We would like to thank all of our sponsors for their dedicated support.
We have races upcoming at the Landing and Tomahawk, followed by races at Seaford and Budds Creek. Please look at our website www.mamamx.com for some of the extra events we are planning such as karaoke and pizza at Budds Creek in September. Executive Board voting starts at our race at Tomahawk on August 1st and 2nd. This is a great time for our members to impact the future direction of our organization, so come out and vote.
Remember that advancements started after the sixth race. Any C or B rider with six races in their specific class with a RPV of 15 or higher must advance. It is the riders’ responsibility to ensure they enter into the correct class.
I would like to take the time to thank our members. It is each of you that make this organization the premiere motocross organization on the East Coast. MAMA is the organization it is because of our members and their commitment to the sport and their family. Regardless of the level of competition, at the end of the day you continually see how members go out of their way to help others in need. That is what defines this organization – family, friends and a great time.

Jerod Stoner Wins the GMER Hare Scramble By Chris Borger
The Green Marble Enduro Riders ECEA Hare Scramble was held Sunday, June 14, at Rocket Raceway in Three Springs, Pa. This year, the GMER club put on another outstanding event. The course was awesome, consisting of great woods trails and the legendary motocross track, adding up to a spectacular 9.5-mile course. The event was very well organized with very quick scoring and a no-hassle signup. All the riders gave the event very high marks, and indeed it was a great day of racing. The weather conditions were perfect, and track and trail were in excellent condition for the race. The GMER club, along with Mark and Shelly Carlton from Rocket, really put forth a huge effort to prepare and put on this event. GMER Trail Boss and
Course Marshall Rod White Jr. organized most aspects of the event, coordinating the trail and track, resulting in one of the best Hare Scramble racing formats on the East Coast. Mark Carlton and his crew maintained the track area all day, providing the riders with the best possible racing conditions. GMER has a longtime reputation for providing great racing events, starting back some 25 years ago with their legendary Enduro races in Whiteford, MD. Their members are very organized and dedicated to providing great racing events.
There was plenty of impressive racing action all day long, starting out with the Pee Wee class won by Stephen Green, with Kyle Tino in 2nd and Courtney Abrams taking 3rd place. Next up was the Youth class racers, with Chase Rusden taking 1st place, Ethan Walker in 2nd, and Robbie Civiletti in 3rd. In race #3, first place went to Phillip Nye, 2nd place went to B-Sr rider Sanford Quickel, and 3rd went to Brad Gelwicks. Masters Class rider Jack
Lafferty Sr. took 4th place after he was bumped out of first place on time and row adjustments, but was 1st in the Masters class. AMA District 7 Hare Scramble
Series Chairman Ken Doane took 3rd place in the A-Sr class, Tabatha Roser took 1st in the Woman’s class, and Patricia Blair of Brick, NJ, took 2nd place, and was without a doubt the most beautiful rider at Rocket Raceway on
this day. The action really heated up in the fourth race
of the day, with Jerod Stoner taking 1st place with awesome lap times, winning the event by a full 3-plus minutes. Jerod had a great start, getting the holeshot and never looking back for the next five laps. Congratulations to Jerod Stoner for another stellar performance and the overall win. Andrew Delong of Morgantown, W.Va., was 2nd overall. Andrew ran a fast pace and was very consistent but fell short of the overall behind Stoner. Maryland rider Andrew Tsakanikas took 3rd place after a rough start, crashing in one of the first turns going into the woods, then again close to the scoring station. Andrew was able to reel in 4th-place rider Shane Hufford by 14 seconds on his final lap, with B-200 rider Nick Davis coming in 5th overall. Nick is in his first year in the B-class, coming out from the youth class for 2009. Congrats to Nick on a great performance.
All in all, a great day of racing at Rocket. The GMER club was right on schedule through the day with all the racing, and the ECEA scoring crew led by Mike Soudas had minute-by-minute scoring updates on their big-screen monitor for the spectators and pit crews. Several patrol riders and course marshalls were in all locations of the course for the safety of the riders. Several members of the

Northern Virginia Trail Riders club (NVTR) and the Road and Trail Honda club (R&T), along with members of the Baltimore County Trail Riders (BACTRA), worked the event in support of the GMER club. The club had a large, well-coordinated group working this event. Rocket provided great food, lots of drinks, excellent parking and camping conditions, and many other accommodations. They also kept constant maintenance and watering on the MX track all day.

Poe Picks One at Shippensburg STBy Len and Ben BreechSHIPPENSBURG, PA.
After having two close hard-fought battles for a second and a third, Mike Poe finally figured out the starts at the Baer Racing Products-sponsored short track at Shippensburg Speedway. On a warm, sunny afternoon, getting a start on this clay track was the key to the win, as most of the finals had passing behind the front two or three.
Poe started off gating second behind Ken Yoder in the 450 Stock Frame final. Nick Henderson, Evan Baer and Joe Gathercole followed. After Baer took third on the second lap, third on back stayed the same and was evenly spaced. Poe tried to get by the crafty veteran but couldn’t find an opening.
Next up was the Open A,
where Chris Klinefelter took the lead from Yoder, Rick Winsett and Poe. Poe took third going into three on the opening lap. This time it was three running nose to tail looking for the slightest opening or mistake.
By the final event of the
afternoon, Open Sportsman, Poe had his starts figured out, grabbing the lead from Henderson, Klinefelter and Travis Diem. Baer and Dalton Winkler dropped Diem back for the only position changes in this final.
Dustin Healey showed why
he wears the number 1NE on his bike in the 65 final. He took the lead from Colton Smith, Tristan Avery and Brandon Price. Avery moved into second by the end of lap two, with Price taking third on the following lap. Healey had put some distance on the rest, but Avery started cutting into the gap. On the fifth lap, Smith fell, necessitating a restart. The order stayed the same to the end after the restart.
In the 85 (7-11), Price and Healey had to start from the penalty line due to an opening lap accident. Allen Fogle took the lead from Avery, Ryan Varnes and Cameron Smith. Fogle bobbled slightly off two on the third lap, and Avery took the lead by the third turn. Once underway, Healey picked off several riders, using the outside line to take fourth on the fourth lap and third on lap seven. Once in front, Avery checked out, winning by a straight.
Matt Trout led Becca Zafia, Jeremiah Snow and Colton Smith at the start of the 125 final. Snow bobbled back a spot on the second lap, then Smith had a better drive off two on the fourth lap, taking second by the third turn.
After a ragged start, Snow emerged with the 250 B lead over Kevin Bills, Tyler Phillips, Tyler Haas and Charlie Houck. Phillips took second at the end of the fourth lap, but Snow held the point to the end.
Gathercole led Winkler, Diem and Bills at the start of the 250 Sportsman, but on the third lap, he drifted slightly off the groove in two, letting Winkler into the lead.
Zack Kolsovsky survived a penalty line start to take a close 50 Senior (7-8) win
from Nathan Reichert, while Damon Ream again took the 50 Shaft final.Ray Jenkins won the evenly spaced 40 + final, while Winsett topped the 30 +: Phillips won the also evenly spaced Open B final over Zafia and Bills.

Robinson Relentless, Braykovich Bold

Now in its fifth year, the Ultimate Motocross Series continues to have tremendous growth. Mother Nature tried to put a damper on the action with plenty of rain the day and evening prior to the event, but the Hurricane Hills track crew did an outstanding job maintaining the racecourse, and, with the help of the wind, the track dried and was nice and tacky for the second set of motos.
Darian Robinson topped the podium of the Mid Mini (9-13) division. Robinson led the start of the opening moto and rode wire to wire for the win with an 11-second lead. Robinson started the final moto in second and quickly moved into the lead and rode to another win, uncontested. Kevin Tompkins took runner-up with a pair of 2-2 rides. Ryan Clites completed the podium with a 3-3 tally.
Robinson, Clites, Addison Emory and Schae Thomas led the pack at the start of the opening Mid Mini moto. Robinson had a five-second advantage at the start of lap two. Tompkins took second in the first corner of lap two. Clites was relegated to third. Emory and Brandon Hartranft rounded out the top five. The top five were all spread out by the start of lap three. Robinson continued to extend his
lead, which was nine seconds at the start of lap four. Near the end of the lap, Emory went down. Hartranft inherited fourth and Thomas fifth. Robinson took the checkered flag 11 seconds ahead of Tompkins. Clites, Hartranft and Thomas closed out the top five.
Tompkins, Robinson, Clites and Robert Piazza led the start of the final Mid Mini moto. Robinson took the lead by the fourth turn, relegating Tompkins to second. Clites, Piazza and Emory rounded out the top five. The top five were all spread out after
only two and a half laps. Robinson started lap three with a seven-second advantage that Tompkins reduced to five seconds on the last lap. Robinson got another win. Tompkins, Clites, Piazza and Emory followed.
Ronnie Stewart, Dylan Braykovich, Addison Kramer, Matthew Hougentogler and Jim Doolittle led the start of the first Open A moto. Stewart started lap two with a two-second advantage over Braykovich. Kyle Sidle passed Doolittle, taking fifth near the end
of lap two. Doolittle was displaced to sixth. Stewart increased his lead to three seconds at the start of lap three. By the middle of lap three, Stewart’s advantage had grown
to four seconds. Kramer trailed Braykovich by six seconds. Stewart took the checkered flag with a nine-second lead. Braykovich, Kramer, Hougentogler and Sidle completed the top five.
Braykovich, Kramer, Hougentogler and Stewart led the start of the final Open A moto. Stewart passed Hougentogler, taking third on the back tree line. Hougentogler was relegated to fourth. Stewart caught Kramer, and the two battled for second for three quarters of a lap. Stewart made the pass in the big sweeper by the start. Kramer was displaced to third. Hougentogler and Sidle rounded out the top five. Braykovich and Stewart started the fourth lap only a bike-length apart. Braykovich opened up a small advantage of two seconds at the start of lap five, but Stewart reeled him in and made a last-ditch effort in the final corner to take the lead but couldn’t. Braykovich got the win by a bike-length over Stewart. Kramer, Sidle and Hougentogler closed out the top five.
Braykovich (2-1) topped the podium. Stewart (1-2) took second, and Kramer (3-3) third.

CT: So your racing hare scrambles right now. Can you tell me how you got started in this type of racing? JS: I was about 7, and I had been riding a few years around the house. My mom and dad decided to take me to a motocross race at Flying Dutchman MX. I did a few motocross races, and in the fall we tried the hare scrambles, and I did a lot better in them because they were longer races.
CT: Do you race anything besides hare scrambles? JS: I like practicing motocross because it helps me keep my aggression up and charging into and out of corners. I did a motocross race at Sleepy Hollow MX earlier this year, and I had a lot of fun. CT: What big events do you race throughout the year? JS: I’m going to try and do the Foggy Mountain National Enduro again this year. I did really well there last year, finishing right behind Mike Lafferty, so I’d like to see how I can do against all the top guys again this year. I also have been going out to A Day in the Dirt in Southern California the past two years. It’s a lot of fun and a good experience to see how much different the riding is on the West Coast CT: How do you feel about the competition throughout D6 and the rest of the East Coast? Who are your biggest competitors around home and on the national scene? JS: The competition around here is very good. The ECEA Series always has a packed AA line and is very fun. I have been been battling with Andrew DeLong and Shane Hufford all year. And the national races are packed with fast guys. Of course all of the top pros but also in the A classes in the GNCC’s, like Jordan Ashburn and Steward Baylor. We live in a very good region when it comes to the amount of fast riders at the races every weekend. CT: What are your plans for your future in the sport? Mainly next season? JS: I plan on finishing out this year strong and hopefully giving the GNCC’s another shot before the end of the year. As far as for the plans for next year, I’m honestly not sure. I’m just gonna have to wait and see where the rest of this year takes me and take it from there. CT: What do you do in your down time besides riding motorcycles? Any other hobbies? JS: Other than riding, I do a lot of bicycle riding. I enjoy my road bicycle and also like to do some mountain biking with friends when I can. CT: Who did you look up to when you were younger? Any favorite riders when you were a kid? JS: I remember when I was a kid I always looked up
to the top Motocross pro riders like McGrath and remember Carmichael coming up. Steve Herman used to come in the shop a lot, and I really looked up to him. I actually still have his poster on my wall he signed a few years back. I have always looked up to Mike Lafferty also in the off-road racing because he has done a lot of the sport and is a good person on and off the track. CT: Hare scramble courses are usually always different. Do you have a favorite track? Least favorite track? JS: I have always like the ECEA Hare scramble at Rocket Raceway. The owners are great people, and the track is good. You have the tighter sections in the back and some quad track and the moto track, which really mixes it up. I also like the ECEA Harescramble at Blue Diamond. It’s very fast and wide open and also has some supermoto and motocross to it.
CT: What do you feel are your strengths against other riders? Are you better through rocks, sand? More endurance than most others? JS: I have a lot of confidence coming into every race. I know what I am capable of and what I have to offer. I grew up in the rocks, so I guess that is my strong point, but I feel I’m a good-all-around rider. And I definitely have the endurance to be able to charge comfortably for the entire race. CT: Wrapping up, what would you say to a young kid who wants to be a professional off-road rider when he gets older to get started? JS: When I was younger, I remember riding my motorcycle and having fun on it. My dad and I would go to Tower City or somewhere and just ride and have a good time. I started doing very well in my racing, and things just started to come together. If you want to become a professional riders someday, remember the background to racing. Racing is fun. We all do it because it’s what we love to do. Sure, there is a lot of pain and stress that is put into becoming a professional motorcycle rider, but you still have to enjoy doing it. Every time I put my gear on or kick over my bike, I’m doing it because it’s what I love to do. No matter how far I go or how far any of you reading this go, have fun on your dirt bikes and enjoy the ride because that’s what got us all started in the first place.

The fifth round of the District 6 Ultimate Quad Series, in conjunction with the first round of the PAMX Regional ATV Series, came to Sleepy Hollow Motocross Park in Fredericksburg, Pa. Heavy rain had pelted the track all day Saturday, which forced the Sleepy track crew to cancel practice. Sunday lived true to its name, as the clouds moved on and blue skies and bright rays of sunshine shown down on a new track layout for the 2009 season. A new starting gate was placed at the lower left side, and the track direction is now in reverse, which means Sleepy’s notorious “Banzi” jump is now an uphill table. After practice, the track really started to come in and would make for a great day of racing.
Open “A” had the #29 of Trevor Borger going 1-1 but not without #21 of Anthony Burke hot on his grab bar. Austin Murphy rounded out
the podium on the #8 Suzuki. Murphy had a great first moto in the Pro/Am class, but Kawasaki-mounted rider Tony Lucarelli got the overall, going 2-1. Lucarelli was coming off a bad crash and
severely injuring his shoulder at Hurricane Hills only a few weekends ago. #25 Jordan Davidovich and #110 Andy Civils battled hard in the Open “B” class, swapping moto wins. But Davidovich
took the all-important second moto win, giving him the overall. Sam Campbell on the #323 Honda took yet another win in the Open “C” class. Placing second and third were Tyler Cramer and Aaron
Travis Wotring grabs a fi st-full of throttle trying to put some distance on second place.

Poklembo. College Boy had Tyler Dommel edging out the “B” class winner Davidovich and #15 Justin Frailey. The #5 of Michele Suciu was perfect while whopping up on the boys in the +25 class, and Roy Lampron took the overall in the +30 class.
The 200cc 2st/300cc 4st class had the largest numbers all year. These numbers are usually only seen at the national level. But Zak Burke made it look easy, cruising to a 1-1 finish for the day. The Sr. Mini had the #93 Bren Marra out of NJ taking the overall,
followed by Nicholas Major and Shay Honeywell. Kevin Kubinak had gone2-1 to take the overall win in the Jr. Mini class. Kelli Moran puts the hammer down to win both motos in the Girls 8-15 class. A very fast Travis Wotring never looked back as he ran flawless motos in the 90cc Prod. and the 70cc Prod. classes. Also sweeping two classes was Dale Raven in the 50cc Stock LTD and 50cc Prod.
There were quite a few racers having a perfect day of racing by winning both motos
in their respective classes. The next round is over a month away, which means everyone else will have time to train and practice as hard as they can to catch them. But these front-runners did not get to where they are by lounging around the pool all day. They too will be out there putting lap after lap of hard motos in to continue their winning ways. After this break, we will see who has put the time in and who hasn’t.

The Landing in Easton, MD, was the site of round 8 of the District 7 Gold Series of the 2009 season on June 28th. With temps in the mid-80s, 225 riders registered for 36 classes held in 19 motos. Collegeboy and 25+ were combined to take the first split gate of the day, with TJ Irvin #77 taking a win in the first Collegeboy moto and Christopher O’Hara #121 taking 25+. Irvin went on to take the second moto later in the afternoon, giving him 30 points for the class. He later took another 30 points in Open A by winning both motos in that class. O’Hara also took a win in the s e c o n d 25+ moto as well as taking both in 35+A. O’Hara also split motos with John Kernan #52 in 30+ Vet A, but Kernan took the overall win by taking the second moto. Coty Schock #119 was once again among the big winners of the day by taking first in all motos in Junior Mini and 85 9-11.
Andrew Green #949, who took both races in 250B, split wins in Open A with Mark Mercer and came back in the second moto to take the first-place prize. Cody Calloway #302 won the first Supermini moto but couldn’t hold off Jason Shahan #55x in the second, giving Shahan the win. Shahan also took both motos in 250C.
Another riders who showed off their skills was Wade Blevins #318 in 35+ Amateur. Blevins also split motos with Timothy Kranston #54 in 30+ Vet B, with Kranston taking the overall first-place win. Ted Orr #740 won both in 40+ Senior A, and Mike Farmer, #17 in 50+. TC Stith
#94 won both of the 51cc 7-8 motos; Jacob Lewis #65 10-11; and Kyle Chrisovergis #813 in 65 7-9. Dallas Shahan #89 won both motos in 85 12-15, while Justin Ware #118 did the same in Open C.
Jeremiah Lewis #333 finished first
in both Schoolboy motos, earning 30 points, and Ashley Dronenberg #311 ran unopposed in the Women’s class.
Vet 30+ C saw some action with Mark Wilson #122 taking first in both events, while Timothy Gately #113 placed second in the first moto and Troy Remines #22 finished second in the last moto. But the consistency of Brett Bernard #23 paid off with two third-place finishes, giving him an overall second-place trophy and 25 points.
Rudy Maldanado #32 finished third in the first race in Senior 40+ Amateur but came back to win the second moto, giving him the top spot and 30 points. Jeffrey Wroten #66 took second for 25 points with a first- and a third-place finish. In 65 10-11, Matthew Orr #138 won the first moto, followed by a third-place finish to give him 25 points and a second place overall trophy, while Jacob Lewis #97 followed up a second place in the first moto with a win in the second to give him the overall victory and 30 points.
In Quad action, 10 classes were held in six motos, with Quad A and B taking the split gate first. Riders earned 60 points for a first-place overall finish, and Keith Hitchens #279, Quad A, was the first of the day to take top honors, followed by Tanner Marvel #22 in Quad B. Riders who
won both motos in their class were Jordan Kaufman #105 in 200/300, Kobe Vanfossen #60 in 50’s 4-6 year old,

as Michael Kirshner #378 finished 2-1 to give him the win and 55 points. Erik Faatz # 82 finished 1-4 to earn 48 points and the win in Quad C Div. II, with Kevin Atkins #69 coming in second with a 3-2 finish. Ryan Cochran #113 made an excellent effort after a seventh-place finish in the first race and came back to take the win in the second race to give him a solid third-place spot and 44 points. Shane Foxwell #142 split wins
with Scott Vanfossen #56 in Quad Vet 30+, with Foxwell taking the second moto, giving him the first-place win.

With the Mid-Atlantic area racing in three multi-use fairground facilities, Donnie Mullen has again proven that he is the man to beat at these small tracks. At the second Mason Dixon Dirt Trackers-sponsored event at the Lampeter Fireman’s Fairgrounds, he destroyed all three Expert classes he entered, plus the added dash for cash. Mullen had his Miller Motorsports Honda in front by the time he entered the first turn, except for one. Masa Ohmori led the 450 Stock Frame out of two, but Mullen had the lead off four, only to be greeted by a red for a pair of downed riders. On the restart, Masa muffed it, and Mullen was gone, with Travis Diem staying close and several lengths in front of Mike Poe, Evan Baer, Derek Hersh and John Long. Poe held third while the others fought over fourth, which went to Hersh.
The Open A had Baer, Poe, Hersh and Jake Shoemaker fighting for second. Poe took second at the end of the first lap. The Open Sportsman had Dillon Cava, Shoemaker, Hersh and Baer behind Mullen. Shoemaker took second starting the second lap and pressured Mullen towards the end.
While Mullen dominated the Expert portion, two riders scored double wins in the Amateur groups. Brandon Price topped the 65 and 85 (7-11) classes, while Dan Bromley took the 125 and 250 classes. It was an unusual start for Bromley, as the Hare Scramble they were going to run this weekend was flooded out. The 125 had Bromley putting his Bromley’s Motorcycle Sales KTM in front of Colton Smith, Ryan Bills and Albert Cook. The front two pulled away as they battled for the lead. Smith stayed close the entire distance using the outside line.
Dan put his Suzuki on the point in the 250 B over Erin Kissinger, Joe Bromley, Joey Alexander and Becca Zafia. Joe tried the high line off four to get by Kissinger, but dropped several spots. He was trying to work his way back in over the next few laps, but on the seventh lap, he crashed hard off two. He was shaken but unhurt, and the race was called.
Price had to work harder for his 65 win as he
and Chase Smith collided off the start. Smith was underway before the red came out, so Price got to start from the third line. He came off in fourth, but got going and was into first off two on lap three from Smith. Smith began drifting back as Colin Cunningham then
Nathan Reichert dropped him back.
Price started on the front row in the 85 (7-11) and led Dalton Gauthier, Cunningham, Cameron Smith and Ken Kolsovsky. Gauthier stayed close the entire distance, while the close battle between Smith, Kolsovsky and Allen Fogle sent Cunningham to the rear after halfway.
Steve Lerch took the Open B lead from Gary Jenkins, Greg Lerch and Samantha Bergman. Greg took second starting the second lap, but Jenkins retook it on the fifth lap.
Ken Yoder took the 30 +, with Ray Jenkins easily winning the 40 +.
John Long won the 250 Sportsman over Roy Miller and Joey Alexander.

Goals for the rest of the year: Maintain my points lead in the ultimate series, finish well at KROC
Sponors: I wouldn’t be anywhere today without my dad, who drives me to every race and keeps my bikes running, and my mom to keep me motivated. MBR, Scott, Thor, Fury Inc., Pant Saggin Dezin. However, I am currently looking for a shop to ride for.
CT: So, tell me how you got started in the sport?AM: I started riding when I was 4 years old on a 1992 pink pw 50 my dad bought for me. My first race was at Sleepy Hollow. I stopped in the first turn and let everyone pass me.CT: I had myself a pink pdub too! How many races a year do you attend? Any big events like Mini O’s or Loretta’s? AM: I race every weekend in the summer somewhere in D6. Kroc and Mini O’s are my major big races throughout the year; however, I recently started attending the Florida Winter Am races.CT: Who is your biggest competitor week in and week out? AM: Myself, everyone in A class is super fast, especially in D6, so if I can keep it light and have fun, I do much better then getting too serious and nervous. CT: Do you have a favorite track? Least favorite track? Why them?AM: Miles Mountain is my favorite track, from the perfect dirt to the nicest crew. Mini O’s supercross track is the worst, hardpack and extremely rough.CT: Have you ever raced anything besides MX? Hare Scrambles? Dirt track? What do you think of the other disciplines? AM: I have done a few hare scrambles, including one in the A class. Those guys are crazy. You don’t get to see the track before you ride it, and they go 110% from the start.CT: What do you want to get out of the sport?AM: I already got the best thing possible out of this sport, lifelong friends that have become more like family.CT: Would you rather go to prom or a motorcycle race?AM: No question. I would skip prom for a motocross race.CT: I agree with you on that one. I can’t say I’ve ever been to prom. Always had a motorcycle race somewhere to attend. Do you have a favorite professional rider? Least favorite?AM: Chad Reed and J-Law are my favorite riders; James Stewart is my least, only because it’s boring when he wins everything.CT: I can side with you on J-Law, but not much of a Reedy fan. Any hobbies besides racing?AM: Outside of riding, I like to drive my truck around with the windows down and listen to Lil Wayne like it’s my job. CT: Any Advice for younger racers coming up who want to be a successful MX racer? AM: I think the best thing for anyone to do is to have fun and stick with it. If you would have seen me ride mini bikes, you would have never thought I’d be any good today.

As Budds Creek prepares for the upcoming AMA Pro National in August, the Mason Dixon Riding Association made it’s second stop in southern Maryland for Round 7 of the 2009 MDRA Racing Series. The gates were packed, and the air was hot as 19+ motos would make their way around the Budds Creek facility.
Ryan Clites was up front in the 80 12-15B and Junior Mini 9-13 classes all day. Ryan brought
his #14 Suzuki down from Abingdon, PA, to go 1-1 in both classes, taking two overalls for the day. Jesse Pulliam from Elkton, VA, went 3-3 in the 85 12-15 B class, and Tristan S. Kimble of VA went 2-4 to round out the top 3. In the Junior mini class, Clites was followed by West Virginia’s Brandon Garlock, who was 2-3 and second overall, and Coty Schock for third with a 3-4. Schock also rode well in the 85 9-11 B class, going 2-1 and the overall win. During the 50cc practice, the 719 Cobra machine of Shawn Rothstein was impressive around the shortened Budds Creek Track. Shawn’s speed proved true during the 50cc 7-8 class, taking the overall win in the class. Shawn also saw a 7th overall in the 65cc 7-11 class. In the 250 A class, William Duffy and Broc Schmelyun exchanged moto wins, with Duffy taking the second moto as well as the overall. Duffy kept his day rolling with another overall win in the Open A class, going 1-1.
The 250 C Class had two divisions at Round 7 and had some great racing. The 250 C class also had a consolation race to put the top riders from division one and two into a single second moto. Michael Reynolds was out front and finished 1-1 in the 250 C class. Moto one of Divisin II Michael was out front with about a
ten-second lead on the last lap. The number 90 Kawasaki of Matthew Morningstar, the 28 machine of Tyler Ray, and the 201 suzuki of Garrett Arminger were in a close battle for second and third. Coming down Henry Hill around the turn at the bottom, the 201 lost some momentum, and at the end of the moto would be 4th. Morningstar would hold on to third, and the Yamaha of Tyler Ray would be the number two finisher in moto one, division II. Brandon Albright was first to cross the line in Division I and would finish the day with a 1-3 for second overall. Tyler Ray held the third spot with a solid 2-4. Open B saw Thomas Mudgett Jr., Tony Archer, and Jersey’s Frank Lettieri Jr. in that order moto one and two. Archer and Lettieri would also see each other in the 250 B class.
Archer grabbed the 1-1 with Lettieri a 3-2 for the second spot.
The MDRA Series has five rounds left and will conclude at Happy Ramblers on Sept 19-20. This is a great series with fast riders and great sponsors, so be sure to check out the racing at the all the rest of the MDRA 2009 Racing Series.

The second weekend in July brought us back to the Pagoda Motorcycle Club for a full weekend of events. On Saturday evening, Pagoda hosted a night Supercross race that saw close to 150 participants do battle on their upper SX course. The crew at Pagoda amazingly transforms their facility each year in a blink of an eye to host SX Saturday night, then motocross Sunday. This year, the weather would be a huge factor, but the crew still got it done. Saturday night brought torrential rains to the grounds, but “abra cadabra” and “open sesame” and everyone awakes to Sunday motocross.
Practice started off very sloppy, and everyone was saying, “Well, no water truck breaks today.” To everyone’s delight, the track shaped up to be perfect, and, yes, the water trucks made their usual July appearance.
This event also hosted a Wyatt Barto Memorial Ride. Foundation 529 was formed to honor Wyatt and to help provide youth racers with the proper protective gear so they can safely participate in our sport. The foundation raises money by selling apparel and sponsoring memorial rides. They then take those proceeds and give them back to the racers in the form of Arai helmets and other protective neck and spine wear. Kudos to the racers at Pagoda; they always step up to support this organization, and again this year over 100 racers participated.
The racing action was intense, as usual, and the day went off without a hitch. You can

Patti and Roy Craig hosted the third annual Motocross for Christ Camp in mid-July at the Breezewood Proving Grounds in Breezewood, PA. Motocross for Christ is a free camp for kids ages 6 to 13, and the mission is to “connect kids with God’s love through motocross.” As I mentioned, the camp is completely free to campers and offers the basic fundamentals of motocross taught by local racers who donated their time to the camp. Kids also get Christian-based learning activities, daily devotions, group discussions, creative learning time and candlelight services. The camp also touches base on things like bike safety and basic maintenance and gives the kids free time each day to relax and enjoy their surroundings. On Tuesday night, a Christian Rock band provided
the entertainment.
This year’s location proved to be the perfect spot for camp. Dan Harris and his family donated the beautiful Breezewood facility to Motocross for Christ for their use. Breezewood offers four tracks to ride on; they have fully furnished cabins, a shower house and dining hall facilities. This year
campers also got to go on hayrides and swim in the Breezewood pond.
Forty riders, 33 volunteers and a host of parents stayed on this year to make the camp a success. The camp continues to grow each year and is supported by many industry businesses, rider/trainers and a few churches from the District 6 area.

The hot, dry weather in the week preceeding this race had us praying for rain and some “coolness.” We got one out of two, with the temperature for Saturday in the low 70s, with a nice breeze. I had planned a little tighter track this time with a lot of single-track woods to slow the speeds down and keep the riders in the shade. The micros started the day off with a track that was mostly new to them. Since the level of our “big” creek was down, they were able to cross it and do a small section of our starting grass track. Garrett Loterbaugh and Lucas Dishon had a good battle in the micro senior class, with Garrett being able to pull out a 20-second lead at the end to take the win. Jacob Epling took the win in the micro junior class, with Christopher Tedrow taking second place.
In the Mini Senior class, Danny Keller and Travis Bellar had an excellent race, trading the lead back and forth several times during the course of the race. Danny took the win by two seconds over Travis and also took home the overall mini trophy. Triston Landrum had a good ride on his 65, winning his class and finishing 4th overall in the minis. Tyler Rose took the win in the mini junior class, with
Dustin Keller coming in second.
With a National Enduro and a National Harescramble both competing against us, most of the “big name” A riders were gone. This made for a good opportunity for some of the young up and coming riders to shine. Judson Coakley took the early lead in the Open A Bike class and pretty much never looked back. Taking the win over Tyler Scott, who was at times able to get within striking distance, was Jesse Coe, who won the 250cc class and took home the overall amateur bike trophy, finishing fourth overall.
Kolton Burd won the Open A ATV class, pretty much “checking out” on the rest of the class, beating second-place Jordan Dodson by over a minute. Kolton Burd was one of only three quad riders to attempt our “Lunatic Leap” creek jump. Douglas Harding won the ATV B class and took home our overall amateur Quad trophy.

MAMA held its eighth 2009 race of the season on a beautiful July weekend at The Landing in Easton, MD. Three hundred eighty-one riders registered for the two-day event held July 18 and 19 with five motos held on Saturday and 18 on Sunday for a total of 34 classes. Saturday’s riders were consistent, with all winners finishing first in both motos. Claude Willett #161 had a great day and took all four motos in both Senior and Super Senior Open. Chad Gill #701 won both in Senior Support and Walter Benitez #20 in
Super Senior Support. TJ Irvin #77 started his weekend off right by winning both motos in Collegeboy, as did Amanda Brown #293 and Scott Clark #442, in Women’s and Schoolboy, respectively.
Sunday brought another great day, with temps in the 80s, blue skies and a little cloud cover to give relief from the sun. Riders who won all motos in more than one class were Perry Boswell #748 in Open B and 250B, while Jacob Belotti #37 won the largest gate
of the day with 28 riders by taking all four motos in Open C. Belotti also held off 20 riders later on in 250C Div. II for another two wins. Riders placing first in both motos in one class were Eric Tinker #517 60B (Tinker also won the overall first-place trophy in 80B 9-11) and Colin Whitten #738 60C. Dunovan Ivory #7 and Dean Caudill #4 put on two exciting races in 50A, with Ivory taking the win. In two of the largest classes of the day, Joshua Peery #396 held off 21 other riders to take both wins in Supermini, as
did Sam Gale #529 in Junior Mini. Gale also took the overall first in 80A 9-11 after coming back from a third-place finish in the first moto. Andrew Benson #191 took both in 250A and placed second behind TJ Irvin in Open A. Dylan Kufahi #7 ran two great motos for a win in 250D, while E.Wernig #31 won both in Mini Women Open. Wernig also took second in 80B 9-11, and Samuel Fowler #159 won both motos in 80C.
Great racing and dedication was
shown by riders like Kyle Henderson, who came back from a fifth-place finish in the first moto in 80B 9-11 for a win in the second moto, giving him a third-place trophy. Hunter Jackson #41 in 60C and Gavin Blue #13 in 50B both overcame an 11th-place finish in the first moto to make a strong comeback in the second, with both finishing third with a highly deserved 6th place finish for each. The top three finishers for each class are as follows.

CT: How did you get started in mostly a male-dominated sport?MK: I first got started racing because my little brother Richie had a dirt bike since he was four. Since we were always at the track, I figured I would try it out, so dad bought me a Kawasaki 80.CT: Were you nervous the first time you lined up against boys in the sport?MK: I was very nervous lining up against the boys for the first time! I didn’t want to race the boys class because I was afraid they would take me out!CT: What is your favorite part about being a female and a racer?MK: My favorite part about being a female and a racer is being able to talk to the guys about the track or conditions, and they take me seriously and help me out.CT: Any female professional riders you look up to?MK: I look up to Ashley Fiolek because she is so young and always raced with the boys growing up.CT: What do you feel are your advantages being a female motorcycle racer?MK: I always get lots of help loading and washing my bikes! :)CT: Now what about disadvantages being a female racer?MK: The women’s class always gets a split gate! We never get the track all to ourselves. I always have to waste time passing the class from the previous gate drop.CT: Favorite racetrack?MK: Pagoda is my favorite track.CT: Biggest female competitor in your sport?
MK: Nikki Stewart is my biggest competitor because she is fast but doesn’t back down. We get pretty aggressive together.CT: How do you feel about female riders in other forms of motorcycle racing?MK: Having female riders in any form is good! Maybe someday motorcycle racing won’t be a male-dominated sport.CT: Why do you think female racing is growing so much?MK: I think when girls see other girls out riding it makes them want to ride, especially now that companies are making female racing gear and focus on women racing, the sport is really growing.CT: Ever made a boy cry because you beat him?MK: HAHA! I know I made a few boys mad because I beat them. CT: Outside of the racetrack, do you have any “girly” hobbies? Gymnastics, etc?MK: When I was younger I twirled, but racing now takes up all of my time.CT: Do you feel you need to train twice as hard since you’re a female?MK: I definitely need to strength train more than the guys do. I can barely lift my bike onto the stand!CT: What would you say to a young girl wanting to quit ballet lessons to pursue motorcycle racing?MK: I would say if you’re going to quit ballet lessons to pursue racing, make sure you give it your all and be prepared to get treated like a boy would be treated.
