Hello Race Fans! Happy August everyone !! You know what that means, yes that’s right – Loretta Lynns time. As we speak, the top amateur racers in the country are at the ranch, duking it out for the top spots in their respective divisions. If you made it this year - Congratulations, if you’re reading this from home, please cheer on your favorites. And remember to pick up next months issue of MRA to see who grabbed the gold. Things are moving along right here at home. We’ve got 11 rounds of the D-6 Championship MX Series under our belt and 7 rounds of the PA State Hare Scramble Series are in the books. On the flat track scene we have 4 National Champions from the area. Congratulations to Kenny Venarchick, Cassidy Heiser, Joe Bromley and John Lewis V. As always we strive to bring you the best amateur race coverage possible from around the region. We’ve attended close to 30 events this season and have a ton more in our schedule. If you have a suggestion for MRA, please feel free to email us. If it improves the sport, we are always willing to listen. Shawn is on his game again this year and is leading the PA State and D-6 Championship series, as well as Flying Dutchmen Points at the mid point of the season. Shawn seems to be a very versatile rider, when we caught up with him he was at Sleepy Hollow competing in his first ever moto-cross race. The results you ask ? MRA would like to feature Josh Villareal as this months Holeshot Hotshot. We caught up with Josh at the Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club in Hanover, PA. Josh started racing in the 50cc ranks when he competed out at Las Vegas in the Amateur Arenacross Finals there. Since then Josh has gone on to win track championships at Sleepy Hollow and Doublin Gap. He is a consistent top 5 finisher at all the local tracks, and I believe he has pulled at least one holeshot every time I’ve bumped into him at Happy Ramblers this year. Josh loves to race and his parents Kevin and Beth help out at a lot of the area tracks.Josh will soon be on the 85cc bike only, I’m sure he’ll do well there also. If you bump into the Villareals when you’re out at the races, give them a big high five for all they do for the sport. And watch out next month, you just may be the next MRA Holeshot Hotshot. I’m sure most of you at one point in time have seem him trackside with his camera
resting across his left forearm, or you’ve seem him in the pits beside his trailer before the races have begun offering photographic servic-es to you and your racer. Maybe you’ve seen him at one of the local tracks, or was it that year you went to Loretta Lynns? Maybe it was a Pro Motocross race 10 or 20 years ago. The truth is, it could have been almost anywhere. Thom Veety of Action Photos has just about done it all when it comes to motocross photography. The truth is Thom Veety of Action Photos has probably taken more MX photos than anyone in the Nation. Thom started shoot-ing action photos for a dealer in his hometown in 1973. Yes 1973, I would be willing to bet that a lot of you reading this article weren’t even around then, much less racing a motor-cycle. Thom started with a small instamatic camera (I know, a lot of you are saying - were they digital too ?) taking photos of a local dealers race team. The craze started to catch on and soon Thom was getting requests from other racers for photos. In the late 70’s Thom decided it was time to do it right. Somewhere along the line the instamatic camera went out the window and Thom started his business - Action Photos in 1979. Since then he has spent most weekends at a track somewhere perfecting his MX Photography skills. He has shot Pro Outdoor and Supercross races; he has traveled to the Loretta Lynn Amateur Nationals for 21 of the 23 years of its existence. He has shot for major publications and not so major publications. The fact is that Thom has dedicated his life to this sport thru the lens of his camera. Thom Veety of Action Photos could set up shop and offer MX Photos of racers from
any district in the country. Thom Veety has chosen to offer his photographic skills to us - the racers here in District 6 and the surrounding areas. Thanks to Thom we can offer our children and their children lasting memories to cherish for years. Thom had no idea that I was going to feature his busi-ness in the pages of MRA. Thom is a regular contributor to our paper, it is critical that we have people like Thom out there that can help cover the races, but more impor-tantly, we need people like Thom to record the history that you and your family are creating even as we speak. MRA would like to ask that the next time you see the Action Photos Trailer at an event you are attending, go over and thank Thom for his service to our sport. In my mind he is an icon, a legend, a person that has put oth-ers before himself and his family. Maybe he has a photo of your racer; maybe he can record some history for

Piston Poppers TT ScrambleMullen Dominates Piston Poppers13 certainly wasn’t an unlucky number for Don Mullen as he picked up 3 class wins in front of 560 plus spectators at Piston Poppers scrambles races on Sunday June 13. With the threat of rain over Coatesville, PA, the Piston Poppers MC crew again did an excellent job getting the 147 entries smoothly though the multiple heats and finals, as expected.
In the 250 expert class Mullen was relegated to the back row after switching to a backup bike. Ray Jenkins got the hole shot and took the early lead. Bill Reynolds and Doug Reinert kept pressuring for the top spot until Don completed his run to the front. Reynolds tried a last corner pass on Jenkins but came up just short at the line. In the 450 and Open expert classes Mullen led wire-to-wire and was mostly unchallenged. Mike Varnes was runner up in the 450 class after getting early pressure from Rick Reynolds. In the open expert, Reynolds was again pres-
suring for second, but this time Doug Reinert held him off after a race long battle. Mike Varnes changed his luck in the vet class, though, going wire-to-wire for the win. Bill Reynolds kept him honest but couldn’t get by.
Cory Texter took home his share of the gold, win-ning both the 100 and Open B classes and finish-ing runner-up in the 450 B class. Ken Haldeman took the 450 B class win away from Texter and also cleaned up the senior class over heat winner Rich Washak. Ben Glisson also took care of all challengers in both classes he entered winning the 125 and 250 B races.
On the long scrambles track at Piston Poppers,
the youth riders have a lot of work to do for their trophies too. After some great racing, Jaquan Alston, Tyler Stacey, Cole Zapf, Dan Bromley, Jacob Shoemaker and Charles Thomas all took top honors in their classes.

Loretta Lynn Regional QualifierDoublin Gap MX Park June 26-27, 2004 Doublin Gap MX Park was this years host for the North East Amateur Regionals for the Loretta Lynn Amateur Nationals being held August 2-7, 2004 in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. The Nationals will be half over by the time most of you will be reading this. None the less, pictured below are the local riders that made the cut while at Doublin Gap. It is a tough road for any racer just to make the final roster - there are so many of you that deserve to go, that are capable of going, that are able to win if you get there, but for one reason or the other are not. Don’t give up, keep chasing it, your day will come. For those of you that made it - congratulations and we wish you the best while there. MAXXiS 6 HouRS oF ATV AMERiCARAuSCH CREEk MoToRSPoRTS PARkTremont, PA - July 17, 2004 The fastest ATV racers in the country converged on the Rausch Creek Motorsports Park in mid-July, at night to chase the $ 3000.00 to win Pro Purse being offered by John Pellan, promoter of the 6 Hours of ATV America Race Series in what would be the third and final round for this season. What is 6 Hours of ATV America you ask ? It’s not for the faint of heart, that’s for sure. John Pellan of ATVSCENE.COM created the 12 Hour Series two years ago and this year decided to offer a few shorter versions in various locations around the country. Teams can consist of anywhere from one to three riders but only one machine can be used during the course of the event. The course at Rausch Creek combined parts of their expert ATV track, their natural terrain track and a woods section consisting of a four to five mile loop. They tied this all together, lined the riders up in a lemans style start at 5:00 pm (that’s evening for those of you that didn’t pay attention in school) and fired the gun for the beginning of the 6 Hour adventure. Teams could choose who was starting the race, when they would change riders and they even had various lines to choose from while out in the woods sec-tions. Certain routes were marked expert only, letting the decision up to the rider themselves, but one slip could prove disastrous if you weren’t up to the challenge. Riders prepared their machines with high voltage or LED lights to navigate the course after the sun went down. The promoter used reflective tape in the woods to try and help the riders identify their paths. Imagine though, trying to race at speed thru the woods of PA at night after already being in battle for several hours with thunderstorms looming overhead, against the fastest racers in the country. Pennsylvania racers did well in this event, after all we do offer the top ranked racers in both the Pro MX and Off Road ATV series. The top ten results are filled with names you’ll recognize from around the region and backed by companies that can provide you with everything you need to race or ride your ATV.

I’m sure the 6 Hours will make a return appearance to Rausch Creek next season. This gives you plenty of time to round up your buddies and to start getting ready for next years event. Remember though, it’s not for those afraid to come out in the dark

June 5th and 6th Two days of Hare Scramble racing at the Foot of the Mountain what could be better? Well maybe the weather. I’m starting to feel like these folks at FOM just can’t catch a break with the weather. Rain has fallen during or just before every FOM race this year. Fortunately for the racers, the terrain is on the side of a hill so most of the woods trails stay dry. There always those few mud bogs here and there but it wouldn’t be Hare Scramble racing with out the mud! Saturdays race had plenty of mud. The rain fell most of the night Friday and into the morning on Saturday. The ATV race was sched-uled for 5pm it was cold, foggy and misty. It sure didn’t seem like June to me.
The season is still less than halfway over. We have completed 10 of the 30 AMA District 6 events scheduled for 2004. There are some great points battles heating up in several class. Some racers choose to only compete in the 10 race PA State series while others are focusing on all of the District 6 Hare Scramble points races. With so many races on the schedule it’s a lot of work keeping up with equipment week after week, that’s what’s great about having the Pa State series within the District 6 schedule.
The Auto Sport class has an interesting points battle shaping up between George Richards and Bela Gombar. Both are on the mighty Kawasaki V-Force.
Going into this weekend Richards had a five point advantage on Gombar, but Bela Gombar had the advan-tage in the PA State series! These riders are always push-ing hard for the win against each other on the track and are great friends off the track. Bela got the better of Richards this weekend though taking the win on both days of competition.
Another rider that used the Force (VForce) to his advantage was Ron Dernoski. Ron won the Open C class in commanding fashion. The big V twin was perfect for the slop. Dernoski was tied for second in points going into the weekend. Saturdays second place finisher Bryan Braughless was in 6th place in the points. Owen Kapalski won the race on Sunday. Owen just started racing a few months ago and seems to be catching on quite well. Points leader Tim Wertman was absent from this race. Looking through the results I see he has only raced at the Dutchman. I hope we can get him out to these other tracks soon.
Randy Brandt rode away from the Vet class on both days. Randy really knows
how to hook the Cannondales up! When the track gets rough Randy Brandt speeds up. These quads can be quite a handful to hold onto flying over the rocks and roots like we do, everytime I see Randy on the track he looks strong and in control. Points leader Chad Kirby did not make it out to this weekends events. Brian Shinkannon and Richard Correl are in second and third for points Randy Brandt is in 4th and closing with Dan McBride rounding out the top five.
Chris Borich and Rob Hertz gave the crowd a great show on Saturday in the Open A class. They were nice enough to let me play along for a while. On Sunday several fast guys showed up to have some fun. Dirt First’s Andy Lagzdin a Pro GNCC racer showed up as well as GNCC #33 Mike Lucas and #29 Todd Rothermel. The track was still littered with mud holes from saturdays races, but again the crew at FOM did there best to reroute the course around the slop. Borich took the early lead in Sundays race and never looked back. Todd Rothermel chased Borich for a while till he ran into to problems with his YFZ, Lucas ran in third till Lagzdin took over the spot and eventually moved into second. Rob Hertz was having problems on the first lap and took a while to get going. He quickly sorted things out and put a bead on the leaders. In
the end it was Borich taking another win with Hertz in second, Lagzdins in third, Lucas in fourth and Myself in 5th. I had a hard time firing the bike off the start and left the line 10-20 seconds late. I can’t thank my pit crew(Tara and Jacob) enough, fresh gloves and gog-gles kept me charging every lap. Mark Thompson finished a season best 6th place and Lee Dickerson placed 7th.
There’s a lot of exciting racing coming up in the next few weeks. Jack Frost, Back Mountain and Miles Mountain. We’re in the thick of it now, it’s time for racing in the heat. Summers here and that means hydration for racers. Good luck to everyone, I hope to see you at the races soon.

RACERS RED GLARE … INDEPENDENCE WEEKEND at BLUE DIAMONDBy Ed FratoniTwo words best describe the 1st Independence Weekend Race at Blue Diamond Park…”GREAT TIME!” Blue Diamond Park in New Castle Delaware pulled out all the showstoppers to ensure that everyone had fun at their Grand Opening. Independence weekend July 3rd & 4th marked the opening of the added features to the complex such as miniature golf & amusement rides to compliment the BMX & Motocross facility already in place. The weekend 3 moto format and Sunday’s $6000 pro purse drew riders and spectators to the premier facility in droves. Saturday night featured “fireworks”, mon-ster truck rides and a thrill show with Hollywood stuntman Mike Foster, Budweiser jet truck, Mopar Magic, Thrasher, Towasaurus, Demon and Wizard. Toping off the festivities was a spectacular fireworks display that illuminated the sky. Families enjoyed the atmosphere while barbecuing and sharing race stories of the day under the moonlit night.
Roostin.com put up the cash for the Pro Purse and Powersports East provided the 2004 KX 250 Give-A-Way that was won by Joppa, MD native Zeke Ziemann. The drawing took place Sunday midway through the race order and District 6’s, 2004 National Dirt Track Champion and the weekend’s 50cc 4-6-class winner Kenneth Venarchick drew the ticket. Marc Fasten, sales manager for Powersports East was elated that the winner of the bike was present, local and appreciative of the gesture. Word has it that Zeke wasted no time in exchanging the KX for a Yamaha, his current ride. EMT Jason Haldiman impressed the crowd with a fabulous rendition of the national anthem and Mike McMillan kept the audience informed of the play by play all weekend long. District 6 Veteran A rider Jason George
was out of racing action with a fracture to his left hand and was “guest starter” for the event. Blue Diamond Park is currently constructing a per-manent tower structure for sign-in and observation.
Saturday’s competition opened up with the 125C class and a holeshot from #335 Mark Garvey, a Blue Diamond Park regular set-
ting the pace and winning the over-all 3-moto format with a 2-1-2 showing. Maryland’s Zac Harrington # 287 got the holeshot in the second moto on his 2 stroke and rode to a 2nd overall with a 3-2-1 outing.
Top riders from the area attended the event included Team Green’s Mitch Dougherty, Spy Optics Todd Wilcom, Willy Toth, Gregg Duffy, Jesse Davis, Tom Welch, Kevin Brodsky, Damien Plotts, Jeremy Cook, Dave Ginolfi, Jim McIlvaine, Robby Marshall, Steve Stella, Jason Harper, Larry Harper, Chris Schueler, and Jay Rassa…to name a few.
Payout for each of the pro motos was to tenth place with Tom Welch taking home $2000 for his four first place moto wins.
Back in action was Damien Plotts running #66 for RRP/Crossroad Powersports after a long time off with an injury. He attended Sunday’s race after taking a rock to his right goggle at Evansville on Saturday and sport-ing a semi black eye. Damien got out in front early in the first 125 moto and led for more than half the race as his conditioning for the 20-minute +2 lap moto wasn’t 100 percent yet. Plotts came out in the 250 moto strong, a little unsettled and tangling with Mitch Dougherty and Jeremy Cook in the first turn resulting in all parties starting behind the pack. Damien lacked a good start in the second 125 and rode to a 2-5 in the class. His second 250 moto had him running 2nd behind Dave Ginolfi who had the holeshot. Damien went on to cap-ture 2nd and finish with an 11-2 record in the class. Ginolfi went on to a 5-5 in the 250 class and a 7-3 in the 125 class. Note: Steve Stella’s brother Mike is home recovering from a crushed vertebra he suffered Saturday in practice when his bike went vertical over the third tabletop and he baled off.
Keep your eyes open for this spec-tacular event next year as it will prove to be a must attend by the industry. Hotel accommodations for the non-camping types are available and Blue Diamond Park has activities for the whole family to enjoy.

We need three things to make an engine run, air, fuel and spark. The electrical system consisting of the stator, CDI and ignition coil make the juice but its the spark plug that makes it spark.
The ignition flywheel is a collection of magnets that rotate around the stator coils that are made up of fairly heavy gauge wire windings. The movement of the flywheel creates a low tension current that is fed to the CDI and stored. At the proper moment it is released to the ignition coil which is made up of a lot of fine wire windings. The ignition coil jumps the voltage up to a value that is high enough to jump a spark gap and this spark gets things moving.
Spark plugs may look simple but they are quite an ingenious item. The uppermost part of the spark plug called the terminal is designed to fit snugly in the plug cap allowing transmission of the high voltage charge to the centre electrode, most spark plugs are designed with a threaded on terminal which can be removed to accomodate plug caps designed to fit over only the threaded portion, most bikes will use a cap designed around the use of the terminal. The centre electrode runs through the spark plug from top to bottom and can be made of a variety of materials with copper the most common. When the electrical charge reaches the end of the centre electrode it jumps across the gap to the ground electrode which is the bit we bend to set our plug gap. Most plug gaps are between .5 and .65 mm, always adhere to the specs outlined in your manuals as the voltage required to jump the gap is affected not only by the size of the gap but also the shape of the electrodes and the pressure in the cylinder.
The white colored portion of the plug is the ceramic insulator which encases the centre electrode it is also visible inside the plug and this is the portion of the plug we look at to determine plug colour and running condition. The external portion of the ceramic just below the terminal is ribbed, this is done to help prevent "tracking". Tracking basically means that the spark energy is taking another path to ground rather than the centre electrode. By adding ribs to the surface of the ceramic we make this path longer than the centre electrode which makes it unatractive to the electrical current as it prefers to take the shortest route to ground. Tracking will usually only occur when the outside surface of the plug is dirty and wet.
I'd like to say a little something about plug colour. Don't get carried away trying to achieve a perfect plug colour. The problem with this is that unlike road racers who are full throttle nearly all the time we are not. Due to the nature of our type of racing we are up and down the throttle usually between a quarter and three quarter which makes it difficult to identify which circuit is actually contributing most to plug colour. I hear people say "run it up to top gear then chop the throttle and hit the kill switch and we'll check the plug colour" in reality you're better off cutting a few fast laps and then at the end of a straight chop the throttle and hit the kill switch this will give you a better indicator of your overall jetting. Use the plug colour as an indicator to determine that you aren't running too lean (White blistered electrode) or too rich (Black electrode) anything in between that which yields good response and strong performance is what you are looking for, if you jet by feel first you'll usually arrive where you need to be.
When I think of a spark plug I automatically think of an NGK. They are the most common in our sport and used by more racers than any other plug. The numbering system they use helps identify all aspects of the plugs construction. Let's take for instance a BPR7EIX.
The B identifies the size of the spark plug as a 14mm thread, C is a 12mm and D is a 10mm. The P denotes a projected tip meaning that the centre electrode projects beyond the end of the threads. The benefits to this are that the plug will run hotter at low RPM and better resist fouling and cooler at High RPM due to its exposure to the high velocity intake charge. If you can get a projected tip plug for your bike then do so as there are slight performance benefits to be gained BUT not in 80cc or 125cc engines as their combustion chambers tend to be too shallow to correctly accomodate them.
The R stands for a resistor plug. This is usually spec'd out to help shield the CDI from picking up RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) caused by the firing of the spark plug which can cause misfiring and poor running.
The 7 denotes the heat range. The higher the number the colder the plug and conversely the lower the number the hotter the plug. On a hotter plug the ceramic on the inside of the plugs metal body has a long slender shape this exposes more surface area which allows it to absorb more heat before transfering it to the metal portion of the plug and then into the cylinder head. Unless your engine is being used under abnormal conditions stick to the engine manufacturers recommendations. When the correct heat range is used under normal operating conditions the plug will retain enough heat to burn off deposits that would otherwise cause it to foul. Abnormal use is constituted by running the engine in a manner other than what it was designed for. An example is say a dirt bike engine that has been installed in a Shifter Kart or Micro Sprint chassis and is run at sustained high RPM's in this case it would be wise to run a plug one to two heat ranges colder.

Normal operating temperature for a spark plug is between 450 and 650 degrees C. Below 350 and it will not be able to burn off oil and carbon deposits, above 750 and the plug will get hot enough to cause erosion in the electrodes. anything approaching 950 and you've got a glow plug.
The E denotes the reach or length of the threaded portion. E is 3/4" and H is 1/2". The IX denotes the centre electrodes composition. IX is the top of the line Iridium plug, S is copper, G is gold, V is platinum and I think GV is Gold Palladium. Any performance gains from different make-ups are hard to feel but plugs like the new Iridium do require less voltage to achieve a spark so starting should be easier with better running, economy and throttle response. At $10. a pop they are quite pricy but they should outlast other plugs making them a good choice as well as a good substitute for those $40. plugs that come stock in some bikes.
In closing I guess I should talk a little about plug indexing. Indexing a spark plug means having the plug installed with the open end of the ground electrode facing the incoming fuel/air charge. Whether this has any measurable effect is hard to say but engine builders have been doing it for a long time so if you want to give it a try here's what you do. Indexing can only be performed easily on plugs that use a crush washer, a lot of 4-strokes use a plug with a tapered seat which cannot be easily indexed but nearly all two strokes can. Take a magic marker and mark the outside of the plug relative to the open end of the ground electrode, install the plug and torque it down remembering that when install-ing a new spark plug you must completely crush the heat conducting washer at the spark plugs seat. When the plug has been properly fitted check to see where your mark is, ideally you want it to be facing the carb. If its off by 90 degrees or more then you will have to fit an additional washer to the plug to help re-orient the electrode. Accell makes copper washers for just this task.

Stewart is back on top, Carmichael wins again. The skies threatened but mother nature left the day overcast but mostly dry for Round # 6 of the AMA Chevy Trucks Outdoor National at the Unadilla Valley Sports Center. The Unadilla facility, quickly becoming known as the “Home of Horsepower” held off all practice and qualifying until Sunday due to heavy rains prior to the National event. The decision proved to be a wise one leaving the track in near perfect condition for the racers and it gave spectators an opportunity to catch more racing action. The 125 division kicked off the days festivities, seeing Matt walker grab the holeshot followed by Stephane Roncada with favorites like James “Bubba” Stewart and Broc Hepler getting tangled up in a first corner meelee. Stewart deter-mined not to have a repeat of the last round at Red Bud found himself out of the top 10 in the beginning of this race, with Hepler coming out close to the back of the pack. Stewart as usual turned up the heat fast and by the end of the third lap had worked his way into the lead position and proceeded to do what Bubba does best, run away with it. Back in the pack another young gun was on the move and by midway thru the moto, Team Suzukis Davi Millsaps had worked his way into a comfortable second place position, with Matt Walker filling up the last podium spot.
In moto number two, it was Stewart with the holeshot and a sprint to the end for the overall. Millsaps was putting in another great ride in second until close to the end when a mechanical failure took away his podium hopes. This left the door open and Matt Walker finished with a second overall for the day with Kelly Smith rounding out the top three. In the 250 division - let’s see, what’s that guys name again? Oh yeah, Ricky Carmichael. Two holeshots, two commanding victories, RC rode unchal-lenged yet again and his record remains perfect in this 2004 outdoor season. What will it take to catch this guy, is anybody capable ? Stay tuned in the coming weeks - we’re half way thru the series, it should prove to be interesting. In other
250 news, Sebastian Tortelli became the first man to put a two stroke on the podium during this years outdoor series. As much as I love them, I’m afraid their days are numbered, two strokes, not Tortellis. Chad Reed rode to a 2-3 finish for second overall with Tortelli going 3-4 for third. Jim Bull MRA

The series opener played host to lots of great racing action, 158 riders stormed the fairgrounds to compete for the 4 foot 1st place tro-phies that were sponsored by Sheckells and Sons Construction from Baltimore Md. The outdoor summer series is held on the 1/10 mile pony ring at the fairgrounds and runs on Wednesday and Friday nights thru August 13th.
