AMA Approves New Amateur Class Structure for 2008AMA Racing June 15, 2007

AMA competition bulletin: amateur motocross class rules changes

To: AMA Off-Road Congress delegates, AMA promoters

Please be advised that the AMA Board of Directors ratified a new amateur motocross class structure for the 2008 racing season at its May 2007 meeting.

Nationally recognized amateur motocross classes for 2008 will include:• MX Lites (100cc-153cc 2-stroke/151cc-250cc 4-stroke); • 125 Class (86cc-125cc 2-stroke only) • Motocross (154cc-285cc 2-stroke/251cc-450cc 4-stroke); • 250 Class (126cc-250cc 2-stroke only); • Open (251cc-500cc 2-stroke/390cc-650cc 4-stroke).

Displacements may be OEM or achieved by aftermarket modification.

The amateur motocross class structure for 2008 also includes Plus 25, Veteran 30 and Veteran

40 for riders at least 25, 30 or 40 years old, respectively, riding two- or four-stroke motorcycles with displacements of 86cc-open; and a Women’s class for women riding two- or four-stroke motorcycles with displacements of 80cc-open.

The AMA amateur motocross classes for 2008 will also recognize a Pit Bike class. The specifications for the Pit Bike class are still being finalized and will be submitted for AMA Congress approval at the October meeting.

The 2008 structure for AMA Youth Classes will be the same as in 2007.

The new class structure is the result of a directive the AMA Board of Directors issued to AMA staff late last year to consult with technical experts in the field and recommend a measured approach to leveling the playing field between two- and four-stroke motorcycles in amateur motocross.

Also at the May meeting, the AMA Board of Directors ratified three rules that passed AMA Congress in 2006 for the 2007 season but were not ratified at the November 2006 Board meeting. These additional changes to Amateur, Semi-professional & Youth Competition Rule Book take effect immediately:

• Add sentence (chapter 4, section B, paragraph 3, page 14): “In addition, in Dirt Track, TT, Scrambles and Ice Race, riders changing machines must start on the penalty line on their next race.”

• Last sentence to read (chapter 4, section B, paragraph 7 I, page 15): “and riders will be started in a procedure consistent with Pro Racing restarts.”

• Change (chapter 5, section C, paragraph 1, page 44): “Class 6 Change age to 7-11. Delete Maximum (adjusted length) wheelbase 45 inches. Move brackets between 85cc classes and hillclimb classes 13 & 14. Place the wheel sizes below to be included with classes 13 & 14: Front Wheel Max 17 inches, Rear wheel min 12 inches, Rear Wheel Max. 16 inches. Delete Wheelbase 51 inches or less for Hillclimb.”

Hey race fans, it’s chase and i am going to tell you about round # 6 of this years eceA series. on Saturday June 30 and Sunday July 1 South Penn enduro riders (SPer) hosted this years oXbo hare scramble race located in Pennsylvania farm land with plenty of fun things to do for the whole family. on Saturday S.P.e.r. put on the second junior enduro race of the year with two halves that not only challenged the kids, but the adults as well. the first “leg” of the race was really fast with field sections and the second half was very rocky with a fast flowing river to cross. At night the club cooked a big and delicious chicken bbQ followed by the “Martini brothers band” for entertainment. the pee-wee’s were up early once again and eager to get the racing started! Michael Magee took the overall win followed by Andy

Powers of the 10-12 eL class and thorn “Slappy” Devlin of the 7-9 65cc class which rounded out the top three. the youth race was around 5 miles long and had some great wins and good battles. cody Mummert took the overall win followed by Jacobus Ferreira and Stephen Harris of the AA class close behind. this track was pretty fast with some jumps, field sections and man-made obstacles.

See you on the starting line.... Chase

The man behind the microphone:The Rich Trevelise storyWelcome race Fans. From the time you get to the track in the morning until “Happy trails” plays at the end of day one voice rings out of the loudspeaker at raceway Park motocross events. rich trevelise is the man behind the mike. this is your chance to get to know “the voice of raceway Park motocross” Raceway news: So Rich how long have you been the man behind the mike?rich trevelise: 2007 will be the 23rd year announcing at raceway Park. in 1984 i also announced at bridgeport raceway which was a track that the Shiver family owned in South Jersey. Rn: what got you started announcing? rt: i started announcing because i got hurt racing. it was at the Maico Super Series, a race that Sleepy Hollow and raceway Park ran in the late 70’s early 80’s. Amateur and expert riders rode together in i guess what would be a money race series between tracks. i was in my qualifier and was in 2nd place, i was so stoked cause i was still an Amateur!, terry tucker was in first and fell right in front of me. to avoid him i went to the outside and got hit by somebody else. Somehow my hand wound up in my back wheel. i tore the ligaments in my hand and it was pretty bad. A few weeks later i met up with my cousin, who was a DJ and on the radio in Philadelphia at the time, at WYSP, and the next thing i knew we were working together doing ALL kinds of parties. i couldn’t stay away from Moto so i put them both together.Rn: what kind of pre-race preparations do you do?rt: nothing as far as pre-race prep.Rn: How do you keep all the riders straight? rt: i was always pretty good with numbers, so i just kinda made almost like a second language relating names and numbers. Rn: After all the years do you have a favorite racer?rt: to name one favorite rider is tough, local old school riders i have an enormous amount of respect for are Scott edlestein, Jay irwin, ed Horan, ed brazina and Kenny Adams, Mickey Kessler and barry carsten. current riders would still be Mickey Kessler, barry carsten, yup they’re both still in there, ty Wallace, Jimmy Mac, Jason Harper, the more i think about it there really have been so many talented riders that have come thru raceway it’s so tough to call. Seeing the progress of riders from mini’s to big bikes has been very cool. these guys include richie Zupko, ty Wallace, Jay Lynch, Jay Jay irwin and now Jason Lawrence. being a “Mini Dad” now i really enjoy the mini classes, we happen to have some fast local talent including Dakota Kessler, nick Desiderio, Joey Peters, Anthony Maimone, Frank Lettieri, Luke renzland the list goes on and on. All time Pros in my top Five, i just can’t pin it down, include ricky carmichael, James Stewart, bob Hannah, tony Distefano and David bailey. My favorite, it is and always will be two, my boys, richie and

ryan. Rn: Do you have a favorite KRoC race?rt: Favorite race of champions, that’s a tough one. of course, for anyone that remembers when we did the mini-bike race at the race of champions, when expert riders would race on 80’s for one moto winner take all. the famous Mickey Kessler billy Liles bAttLe has to be one of the most memorable. these two were all over one another back and forth the whole race it was awesome. We have had so many great races and riders over the years it’s hard to pin point my favorite. i think it’s been great to have the factory riders here, and i hope they still come. but, i really like it when our local guys give them a run for there money and its happened a lot at raceway.Rn: Have you ever thought of making the jump to professional announcing? Supercross or Arenacross? rt: i would love to do a national or a Supercross, i kind of had the opportunity to do part of the Supercross that was at the Meadowlands i believe in 1987 or 1988 but at the time i guess i asked for too much money and that door never opened back up. if the opportunity came up again i would leave a mark. Rn : with all the talking all day long, do you still have a voice on monday morning?rt: usually the only time i would not have a voice on a Monday would be if we had a long break and then went into the Kroc weekend. i would be a little groggy sounding till about lunch time.Rn: what is your least favorite and most favorite thing about your job as the announcer?rt: the least favorite thing would have to be calling for flaggers and then having to change the order after i just announced it to everyone. My favorite would have to be the people, for the most part; the best people on the planet are at the race track. We get our whiners every once and a while and people who just like to complain about something but that just happens in life, you can never please everyone all the time. but overall the people and that racer rush that happens when there is a good race going on and you’re kinda thinking to yourself what you might do in that next turn or straightaway to hold off or pass someone, that really keeps me going.

thanks for your time rich. now you know a little more about the man behind the microphone.

round # 6 of the District 6 ultimate MX Series brought double championship points to elkland, PA and the scenic Miles Mountain Motocross course. the event was sponsored by Ackley and Sons Sporting goods in Westfield, PA.As always the folks at Miles Mountain roll out the red carpet for racers and spectators alike. this event brought Saturday night supercross racing along separate quad and motorcycle mx events on Sunday.Miles continues to expand and improve their new for 2007 quad track and even as this issue is being produced, construction and expansion continues on that track in preparation for their upcoming AtV points race on August 12th. in addition they are preparing for their second leg of the D6 ultimate MX that will be returning here the last weekend of August. that event will mark the midway point of the series and will offer factory contingencies from all of the major manufacturers. there’s no better time than now to experience Miles Mountain. if you’ve been there before we know you’re headed back, but if you’ve been on the fence about making the trip from D6 central pack the gear and load the trucks, you’ll be very glad you did.

this track offers natural elevation changes and is dedicated to motorcycles only (the quads run their own track at Miles). i believe the course is close to 1.5 miles in length and is challenging yet safe. they offer overnight parking along with food concessions and some of the most peaceful settings that you can find in the entire state of Pennsylvania. on top of that the hospitality is great and the owners are always open to

suggestion. check out all the details at www.milesmountainmx.com and tell them that MrA sent you.

Welcome to our preview for the 27th Annual Air nautiques AMA Amateur national championships, presented by Amsoil, at the legendary Loretta Lynn’s ranch in scenic Hurricane Mills, tennesseeracers compete nationwide from March through June in the various 64 Area Qualifiers and 13 regional championships to determine the final rider roster for the Amateur nationals. Approximately 20,000 racers attempt to qualify for the national with just under 1400 making the final cut.

Since its inception in 1982, the hope for this race by founders Dave coombs Sr. and Paul Shlegel was to hold a championship amateur motocross race that was fair, safe and fun for all the riders and their families. A nationwide qualifying system ensures equal representation from all parts of the country. A track raced only one time a year ensures that no one will have a chance to ride or race on it before the rest of the competition arrives.

the Air nautiques AMA Amateur national championships have become the premiere

amateur national series in the united States, and the proving grounds for America’s future professional Supercross and Motocross heroes.

Pictured here and on the previous page from the Youth regional at Doublin gap you will find our local heroes that are on their way to the big show. Also listed below are yet more racers from our local districts that will be competing starting July 30th thru August the 4th. by the time some of you are reading this it will all be over and the champions will be crowed. Stay tuned to next months issue to see how your favorite racers faired and be sure to log onto www.mxsports.com for all of the final finishes.

good luck to all in attendance, you are already champions for making it this far. i would also like to apologize in advance, just in case we missed anyone or maybe got our facts a little crooked.

Best to all!

What a beautiful day nature gave us to race in three Springs, Pennsylvania. this race was hosted by the South Penn enduro riders in honor of Jim “ox” Devlin and bo bald, and recently fallen tim Swarner. these three men were very huge supporters of the sport, and each had their lives taken too early in life. As they all rode through the sky looking down on us, i’m sure they enjoyed every second of the race. i had an extra hard time writing this since; Jim Devlin is my uncle, and this all hit real close to home. the old saying goes it’s not what you take when you leave this world behind

you, but you leave behind you when you go. in each of these three men’s lives that was definitely the case. they each made their own impact in the sport, and we should all live as if today were our last. As the families started filling in the fields, we all realized what was about to happen. camps were set up, bikes unloaded, and friendships were rekindled as everyone sat back to listen to the Martini brothers. As the sun came up the next day everyone was getting their game face on. to see

the excitement on those kids’ faces as they lined up was priceless. each time these kids show up at a race it is amazing to see how versatile they are with the terrain. this track had a little bit of everything to offer. From grass track to woods riding this was an awesome track. this track is also infamous for the bridge crossing that got more slick with each passing. i heard a lot of positive feedback from the young riders, but most wished they could get their chance at the field of tires. As the checkered flag was thrown this race was

added to the long list of successful events. Any group of people that can work together as well as SPer did will definitely have people talking. the three men that were riding up above would have been proud to call SPer their home.

this past Sunday round #6 of the PA State Harescramble Series was held “down by the river” at bMer in Dallas, PA. not a cloud was to be seen in the bright blue sky while temperatures were teetering, at a comfortable 80 degrees. the track was absolutely perfect and the atmosphere had a feeling of anxiousness coming off a three week break. the bMer crew could not have run a more professional event, the track layout was awesome, there were flagmen surrounding the course, the scoring worked great and the over-all even ran smoothly. Having good results in the past in Dallas i looked forward to one of my favorite tracks on the circuit. because the starting area was a bit smaller than normal and the number of riders, more than anticipated, the traditional start standing in front of your machine was turned into a normal on your seat dead engine start.i got another great start and went into the first turn second. i made a conscious effort to continue to push to make sure that i didn’t loose sight of the front of the pack like previous races. i pushed hard and stayed behind the leader for the whole first 7 mile lap. the course was awesome and i felt really comfortable on the bike. After coming through the scanner 2nd on the first lap i felt as if i had a good enough push to settle into my race pace. i was passed on the 2nd lap dropping me to 3rd and then again on the 3rd lap dropping me to 4th. i got my second wind and continued to race towards the front of the pack. the track wore in really well and the soil was just awesome, there was a little sand, a little dirt, a little bit of roots, some up hills, some sweet drop offs, multi line tight tree sections, grass fields, and even some shale sections. this track had just about everything you could think of except my friends the boulders, that most other tracks contain. i felt really good on the 4th lap but i made a mistake and both the D’Antonio brothers passed me. We all hung together for a good 4 miles and then Luke took off leaving noah and i to battle it out. it took another mile or two for me to put my head down and charge around noah but by the time i made the pass i saw Luke was a good 40 seconds in front of me.i came around for the 5th lap and the guy was standing there with the flag, not looking at me, and when i was getting scanned i asked if it was half way and they indicated that it was in fact the last lap. i’m starting to get used to getting screwed with

lap indications. coming through the scanners on the last lap i found myself in 5th. After giving it my all and using up everything that i saved for the last lap; pushing ahead and trying to catch up to Luke, i still found myself in 5th place when i crossed the checkers. After all was said and done, just being able to race on such an awesome track, on such an outstanding day and come home healthy – that’s all that mattered.D. Haggs Sr. had a good ride despite his demanding work schedule from the prior week pulling in a 13th on a packed line. racing stays in full effect when we travel this weekend to an area just outside of Johnstown, PA. Having this event being a combined series with the eceA there is no doubt that the cream of the crop will be in attendance and the racing action will be packed!i would like to thank my sponsers: DHaggs Harescramble racing, MSr, Scott uSA, tAg Metals, Scott Powersports, Kenda tires, twin Air and Pivot Works!

the breezewood Proving grounds recently held their 2nd Annual Quad Pulled couch race, what a blast for everyone - spectators and racers alike. Six couches entered the event this year. the winning team was rich baker and Zach eller from new Jersey;

they were both awarded a very memorable trophy and a free 3 month membership to the park. With both guys already being members they raffled off the memberships and donated the proceeds to Anthony Mastracola who suffered a spinal cord injury while riding last year.

breezewood offers a variety of activities at their facility including a choice of many tracks to ride on, some off road trails, pit bike racing during the summer and winter and special events like today’s race and mud bog. camping is available

as well as cabin rentals. You can get all the info at www.breezewoodprovinggrounds.com or by calling their info line at (814) 784-3605.

Ricky Carmichael is: MR 100!!By Jim Bull

15 time AMA MX/SX champion ricky carmichael born november 27, 1979 becomes Mr 100. Actually rc who began his pro racing career in 1996 surpassed the 100 win mark 3 years ago. this latest of many records earns carmichael 100 wins

for combined outdoor motocross victories notching 26 as a Lites rider with his win at budds creek being # 74 as a Motocross class contender. to put that in perspective, James Stewart is his next closest rival with a combined 31 wins.carmichael has done quite well for himself at budds. He is undefeated here in the Motocross division winning the last 8 years in a row and budds is where rc notched his 100th overall MX/SX combined win in 2004. today’s race win marks # 148 for ricky and with only a few races left in his motorcycle racing career can the 150 mark be

reached? Matter of fact, rc got # 149 at red bud, the round after budds and i believe rc intends to race at Millville in mid August. He will most likely be chosen for the American MX of nations team that will race back at budds creek in late September and just prior to printing carmichael announced he will be attending the bercy SX in Paris France on november

9-11, 2007.ricky carmichael the goAt, it stands for “greatest of all time”. He certainly is to date. i can testify that it’s been an enjoyable experience watching rc come thru the ranks. i loved his early days with Kawasaki on the 125 (can i dare say the word) yes 125cc bike when he would either win it or crash his brains out trying. it appears to have paid off. Will some other motocross journalist be reporting years from now how rc used to be the greatest of all time. Will some other, yet to be known racer catch and beat his records? only time will tell and my only wish is that the rest of you enjoy finding out as much as i have enjoyed watching ricky carmichael become the “greatest of all time”. thanks rc !!

on Sunday July 8th the District 6 ultimate MX race Series came to the Dutchmen MX Park offering double D6 championship points. the event was sponsored in part by Jr’s cycles and Motographx with bottle run Xtreme and their trackside support trailer on hand. i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again, every time i come back to the new Dutchmen it keeps getting better. the track continues to come into its own and the days seem to run a little smoother. the racing action was intense today even with the lighter rider turnout. in the mini divisions, many Loretta seeded riders were on hand getting ready for the big show come August with the 65cc classes providing some of the best competition of the day. in the 7-9 division, Joe balkovic would pull out the win over Damian thompson and Schae thomas and in 10-11 racing action trevor Shaffer would put on a smokin’ performance in the second moto to get the overall win over Addison emory and Jarek balkovic.

in other mini action, Loretta participants and DMX’s own rowland Papp found himself battling with YcH’s Jarek balkovic in both the 85 (7-11) and Junior Mini divisions. these two racers are the only youth riders in the entire country to qualify for 4 different divisions. Papp would come out on top on this day.other stellar performances on the day found Loretta’s bound charles Sherby taking charge in both School boy divisions with expert rider ronnie Stewart winning college boy, Four stroke and 250 A. Stewart has the new DMX track dialed in being the only rider to quad, quad, double,

Dutchmen’s rhythm section along the woods. You have two chances in August to try out the new DMX if you haven’t already. they’re racing on the 12th and the 26th and come Labor Day weekend they’ll offer Pit bike racing on the 1st with another round of ultimate MX offering Suzuki, Kawasaki and Husqvarna contingencies on the 2nd. get all the details online at: www.dutchmenmxpark.com.

records are made to be broken and both the MDrA and Sleepy Hollow are starting to become famous for records set. in 2006 Sleepy Hollow joined the MDrA race Series that is based mainly along the Mason Dixon Line and in having only one event that year, they set the record for number of racers attending. in 2007 Sleepy has

stepped up to offer two rounds in the series and at their first round of the year they again set an attendance record for this series now in it’s third year, 748 racers.now you can image that’s quite a lot of racers to run thru in one race day. Despite their challenges the crew at Sleepy did a good job of handling the masses. they had to shorten up the motos and move at breakneck speed, but they got the job done and i believe most people went home

happy. two of their biggest challenges were that number one, they can’t start racing until 11:30 am and number two, when you get the loyalty that the MDrA racers have to follow a series along with Sleepy Hollows great following of regulars, the numbers become huge. All of this has pushed the promoters of the MDrA Series to finalize their decision to offer a great new series, in addition to the one they currently run, for the 2008 race season. (Please see more details in the MDrA Doublin gap race spread in this issue).on to the racing, this event brought many of the racers from the south to do battle with racers from the

north, maybe a prelude of what’s to come in the future. As you can image the gates were full and the racing intense. in my best guess by looking at the results i would say the south won 17 and the north won 14. now keep in mind that maybe a bunch of racers from the north might not have been there because it was a scheduled MDrA round, but then again, maybe they were. All this may lead up to what’s to come in 2008, a grand finale between the racers from the north and the racers from the south, again watch for more details in this and future issues of MrA. My bet is that it’s about to get real good come the new racing season.check out results here and at Sleepy’s website: www.sleepymx.com. Beat the Summertime Heat every dedicated motocross racer out there knows that the heat and humidity can be one of your worst enemies at this time of year. When it gets really hot it makes it hard to do even half the laps at the same speed you normally could. Likewise temperatures over 100°F can easily cause a fully geared- up rider to suffer from heat stroke. one good thing about it is everyone out there has to deal with it too. So, if you can figure out how to beat the heat you will have a ma-jor advantage over your competition on race-day.

When preparing to go out riding on a hot and humid day the first thing that you should think about is hydrating yourself very well. if you do not have adequate water in your body you will not sweat properly which will cause you to overheat quickly and suffer from heat stroke. the more water you drink the better off you will be when fighting the heat because the only way your body can cool down is by sweating. one interesting fact is that you should always drink room temperature or warm water on really hot days because it hydrates you faster. cold water has to be warmed up in your stomach before it can be absorbed by your body. once you are completely hydrated it is safe to go out riding in small increments of time, being sure to take breaks when you feel like you need one.

While out in the heat you may wonder how the pro riders can go so fast with hardly ever showing signs of fatigue. one part to this is just being out there enduring the heat

as much as you can. the more time you spend in the heat the more adapted your body will become to it. You will also build up a tolerance by doing this as well. this means you will be able to perform for longer than those who do not have a heat toler-ance built up. Another trick to beating the heat is adopting a riding position that does not require you to muscle the bike around. Most of the pros have a riding style that flows with the motorcycle thus allowing

them to save energy. by utilizing correct form you can get comfortable enough to ride an entire race and come off the track feeling good. this is the main weapon that any good rider will use to beat the heat, and this is exactly how the pros go so fast. it is important to take small steps at a time when training in the heat, because it can take a few weeks before you become completely adapted to it. this is important because overheating or heat-stroke can be deadly to an athlete who is not in top condition. because many of us are not in top physical condition you should stop frequently to hydrate and cool down. You should always seek out the shade too, when pulling off of the track to rest. on days when it is not humid out it will be hotter in the sun stand-ing still, than it would be on your bike when you’re moving. Always remember that con-serving energy reduces body heat given off by your muscles, and drinking water replenishes water lost through sweating. these are the two most important factors that dictate how you will experience the heat while riding. beyond these two tips all you can do is learn to tolerate and live with the heat.

this month i’d like to offer a few tips on riding gear. i’ll start with a few eyewear tips from a friend of mine, bevo “supercross’s biggest loser” Forti, of Scott goggle fame. He’s a great guy, even if he did get beat by a clown in a recent pitbike race. one problem many of us have had is getting dirt inside our goggles. to prevent fine dirt or sand from getting through the vent foam (on the top of most goggles), try using some baby oil on the foam. this works on the same principle as oiling your air filter. A dry piece of foam will not stop fine particles from passing through. if you’re one of those riders who always seems to get a piece of dirt bouncing around inside your goggles, try putting some Vaseline on the bridge of your nose and below your eyes inside your goggles. the dirt will stick to the Vaseline instead of eventually getting in your eye. using windex on a lexan lens will cause it to crack, use plain water.

Most smart riders are wearing knee braces. to prevent the braces from wearing through your riding pants and attacking your graphics, many manufacturers offer a gear guard. this little piece of padding attaches over the hinge of your brace. Some riders wear an additional kneesock over the outside of their braces for the same purpose.

Have a helmet that doesn’t fit quite right? All of our heads are shaped a bit differently and it’s impossible for a helmet manufacturer to build a helmet to fit everyone. if you have a helmet that fits tightly against an area of your head such as your forehead, try this. remove the helmet liner and slightly indent the foam shell. For most instances you can just use your thumb pressure. if necessary, you can use a very small hammer. You don’t

want to compress the foam too much. the slightest change will make a difference in the way the helmet feels against your head.

using a boot stand when washing your riding boots makes the job much easier. it also helps keeps the insides dry. they’re available to purchase, but i’ve made mine from pvc pipe and fittings. Don’t use glue on the upright pieces, that way they can be removed for storage. You can rig a bungee cord on the inside of the removable pieces to keep everything in one place.

one of the most popular items lately is the Leatt neck brace. this piece of gear is something every rider should consider. As with any protection device, the brace does not function if it’s not worn properly. there’s not enough time to discuss it all here, but the main point i’d like to stress is to have the brace setting on your shoulders, not on top of your chest protector. there are instructions included with each brace. Here’s a website address for a fitment video on Leatt’s website: http://www.leatt-brace.com/gpx_fitment.asp

Want to help keep your fingers warm in cooler weather? try latex surgical gloves under your riding gloves. if you’re having trouble with blisters on your palms, use some crazy glue if the blisters have burst and there’s a hole in your hand. Some grip glues such as Protaper and gripit are the same as crazy glue and a lot less expensive.

i hope some of these tips will help. Any questions or comments, email me at [email protected].

Racer’s EdgeTo Click What, Which Way, When

Since i am always asked questions regarding suspensions and adjustments i thought that this month i would make up a little cheat sheet that everyone could put in their tool boxes and refer to whenever needed. So here we go with some of the more frequently asked questions:

FoRKSProblem: Bottoms, Too Soft, wallowsFirst you need to ask yourself 1) under what conditions? g-outs, landing from jumps,

face of jumps, etc. 2) Does it feel good otherwise? 3) Does it feel too soft everywhere?

oil level too low - raise oil level - will firm up the last third of travel. not enough low speed compression damping - adjust not enough high speed compression damping - adjust internally Spring rate too soft or broken spring - replace not enough preload - adjust compression valve o-ring broken/leaking - repair debris in valving - repair damping rod not attached to cap - repair

Problem: Too stiff - deflects, harsh, nervous, twitchyAsk yourself - everywhere or just on square edge bumps

too much compression damping on the clicker - adjust too much compression damping in the stack - internal adjust Spring rate too stiff - replace with correct spring oil level too high - adjust

For “sticky” forks check axle clamp (fork tube alignment)

check for worn bushings bent tubes - replace Dented sliders - replace Worn anodizing on outer tube - re-anodize or replace

Problem: Turns in too quick, tucksSpring rate too soft - replace with correct springs not enough preload - add preload

not enough low speed compression damping - firm up clicker or internal valve stack. oil level too low - adjust Low speed rebound too fast - adjust

Problem: Doesn’t turn, pushes too much preload - adjust

Spring rate too high - replace with softer spring too much low speed compression damping - adjust rear riding too low - tighten spring preload Wrong tire or compound - replace incorrect tire pressure - adjust

Problem: Dives under brakingit should ! under braking the total dive is controlled by spring rate and pre-load not damping.

SHoCKProblem: Kicksthis is the most commonly mis-diagnosed symptom. Most people think the shock is rebounding too fast when it is actually too much high speed compression or anything that makes it too stiff. too much high speed compression damping - adjust

clicker or internally Spring rate too stiff - replace with softer spring too much preload - adjust too much rebound damping (not too little) - adjust too much low speed compression damping - adjust Linkage bearings seized - replace too high tire pressure - adjust

Problem: Bottoms too much static sag - adjust

not enough low speed compression damping - adjust not enough high speed compression damping - adjust Spring rate too soft - replace with correct spring rate Piston ring o-ring, piston ring or shock body worn - repair Suspension fluid worn out – replace seal blown - repair no nitrogen, cavitating - repair

Problem: Swaps too much high speed compression damping - adjust

not enough low speed rebound damping - adjust not enough high speed rebound damping - internal adjust required Spring rate too stiff - replace with correct spring Spring rate too soft - replace with correct spring

Problem: Feels loose not enough low speed rebound - adjust

not enough high speed rebound - internal adjust required not enough low speed compression - adjust

Problem: Poor traction too much low speed rebound - adjust

too much low speed compression - adjust too much tire pressure - adjust Poor tire selection/compound - adjust tire worn out - replace too much preload - adjust Spring rate too stiff - replace with correct spring not enough low speed rebound - adjust

Problem - Sticky shock Linkage not maintained - repair Swingarm bearings not maintained - repair Shock eyelet bearings not lubed - repair Missing or improper bearing spacers - correct bent shaft - repair or replace

Wherever i have listed the fix as “adjust” you should have an external adjustment that you can perform yourself. Familiarize yourself with what clicker does what (check your manual) and don’t be afraid to give it a go, but keep in mind if your suspension isn’t being serviced regularly then all the adjusting in the world isn’t going to help. As always when i write these articles i feel they could turn into book length as with every tid bit i share i feel i should expand on it but we are limited by space so if you have any questions feel free to call me or catch me at the races and i’ll try to answer them. till next month.

Hello, everyone! if you didn’t notice my article was missing from last issue. My wife and i just had a baby boy named nate. of course a life changing experience always gets you thinking. Having a new baby to provide for and being self employed i began to think of riding safety. over the past few months i’ve seen and heard of several serious neck injuries. i knew that there was away to prevent this type of injury now - the Leatt neck brace. i did my research to see if it was all it was hyped up to be. Any website about the neck brace clearly shows the benefits of wearing one. the brace helps prevent the head from extreme forward, rear, and sideways head movement. it also protects against compression of the neck. i wondered if the neck brace would hinder my ability to look around while riding. i’m here to tell you that i barely know i’m wearing one and it is worth the money. the Leatt neck brace is available in three different models that have three different price tags. the least expensive, club, is completely glass reinforced nylon. the Sport is part glass reinforced nylon and part carbon fiber. the most expensive, Pro, is completely carbon fiber. You

may think that even the club is too expensive for you, but can you really put a price on your health? think of the money you spend on boots, gear, and parts for your bike. the next time you consider buying something you want but don’t need, consider instead the Leatt neck brace.

round # 6 of the 2007 MDrA race Series brought more great racing action to the Doublin gap MX Park in mid July. in addition and maybe even more importantly, it brought news of additional race opportunities for both the current racers following the MDrA series and future racers of a new MDrA Series for the north. At the Sunday morning riders meeting, rod and Jeff Yentzer announced that they will offer for 2008, in addition to their current series, a MDrA north Series that would encompass tracks other than where they compete now. Many of the details are still to be worked out, but some examples they gave included the following.the current 12 race series would still be offered for racers to compete at that live in the southern areas of our region. they said that Sleepy Hollow would move to the north series so that the current racers would not need to travel so far. this would also potentially eliminate the huge rider turnouts that keep us all at the track longer. they may add an additional track or two into the South series.next, they would start a 12 race MDrA north

series for the racers that live in the northern regions of our area. the two series would not have any conflicting dates, so a racer can chose which series they would like to run, or they could participate in both. Some tracks that were mentioned were Sleepy Hollow, englishtown and

broome tioga. this would allow a whole new group of riders to participate in a structured series that has been very successful to date along the Mason Dixon Line. the events are well run and the end of year payouts are huge, the Yentzers told the riders that almost all of the money paid into the series for membership cards is paid back to the racers in one form or another and that all events would still be sanctioned thru the AMA and District 6. i guess the even bigger news on top of all that is the end of year shootout that will take place. 15 riders from the north series and 15 riders from the south series plus 15 riders from the PAMX association (which holds events at mostly western PA tracks) in each division will be invited to a three moto format end of season race to see who the fastest riders from the area really are. no more one day state championship races in three different areas of the state. this folks would be a true series for different regions with a grand finale race that would leave no questions as to who the man or woman was in each division. imagine how

this could help in attracting sponsors let alone the bragging rights.there are many details that need to be worked out at this point. the Yentzers ask everyone to stay tuned to MrA and their website: www.mdramxracing.com for future updates. i believe with the right planning and cooperation that this could truly be a huge advancement for racing in our area. it will offer all racers a series that is manageable in terms of travel and time invested with great

payouts and incentives to participate.Sorry, i didn’t give you any details about today’s race. the action was hot and the results are listed here. You can also check out the pictures at our website: www.mcracingaction.com, as they say, a picture tells a thousand stories.

Getting Sidewayswith Cory Texter

Hey everyone,

Well, this past month has been pretty busy. not the kind of busy, a racer would want in the summer as i have been healing my ankle up and just itching to get back on the track. it is natural for any racer, to rush the process, but i have been doing pretty good with waiting until my ankle is fully healed to come back into the race action.

on June 30th, i went to Lima to watch the pro race they had there. i rode out there with my new Jersey buddy Jakey Johnson and my best friends sister Jodi Lewis, and another racer Paul Lynch. it was a great race and Jared Mees won the final with Kenny coolbeth coming from the third row to finish 2nd and bryan Smith rounding out the podium. After Lima, i headed over to Duquoin, illinois to watch the AMA Amateur Dirt track grand championships with Kenny coolbeth.

My sister Shayna was up for the Horizon Award this year and although she missed it, she rode very well and impressed me with some of her finishes. She won the 450 Premier class on the mile, which was probably one of the biggest races of the week. She also made the podium on the tt and on the Half Mile and was very impressive all week. if it wasn’t for some bad luck, she would of very well had won the 450

class overall, missing it by 3 points. She also finished a 3rd overall in the 250 4-stroke premier class. Jeff carver won the Horizon Award and i felt he deserved it winning three overall championships. between carver, James rispoli, Shayna, and brad baker from Washington, it was a great series. Also, from District 6, i know cameron Smith won the 50cc class overall and looked really fast and smooth. i nicknamed cameron “50 cent” a while ago, and he is one of my little buddies and definitely deserved the win.

After Duquoin, i headed over to my first race back in Joliet, illinois with chris carr and his family. i knew it was going to be a Long day of racing as i could still barley walk. i got on the bike and my ankle was hurting bad. it felt like an alligator was constantly ripping at my ankle the whole night. i survived and got some points out of it. i was very disappointed, but chris and Kenny said it was a smart decision to ride and it just might pay off at the end of the year. Jared Mees AgAin won at Joliet and looked very fast. bryan Smith finished 2nd, with Jersey Jake Johnson in third.

i went home for a week and finally got to heal up some before i made my trip to Saluda, Virginia on July 14th, for my next basic twins race. After the first practice, i felt horrible and my ankle hurt pretty bad. i was running 25 second lap times and i was 2 seconds off the pace. i went back to the rig by myself, thought hard and got completely focused on what i had to do to turn this around, hurt ankle or not. i lined up for my heat race. i got a good start but got pushed wide. i caught and passed for 4th place and i put my head down. i forgot all about my ankle and made a charge and started catching the leaders. A couple of big changes to the bike for the final, and i actually feel confident i can win this thing. i lined up for the final, and didn’t get too great of a start. i came off in fourth and the leaders started gapping me. i once again put my determination in front of me and charged front. i made up the half straightaway gap on the leaders and found myself in a 4 way battle for the win. it was hard to make a pass, not having a very strong ankle to use in completing the pass but i dug deep and tried some outside and inside passes to get into the lead. i came up short and finished 4th, missing the win by half a second. i was disappointed i didn’t win, but my lap times in the final were awesome and i was just happy with how i rode even though my ankle wasn’t 100%.

i am very confident i can make up the 15 points that i am behind in the series, and my team and

bikes are great. Kenny tolbert, chris carr and Pam carr, bubba and Jerry that help out under the tent, and most of all my father, grandfather, and my sister have been behind me 100% and with these people and many more behind me, i feel confident for the remaining 6 races in the series and also for the upcoming singles nationals i have been looking forward to all year.

As for the gnc points, Jared Mees

is still holding onto first place. After winning Saluda, Kenny coolbeth closed the gap a little bit and still holds second place. Jake Johnson continues to impress on the Suzuki and is in third. it should be an awesome year.

now it’s back to the practice tracks and the training programs harder then ever. i will be doing a local race or two getting back into the swing of things a little more before Hagerstown. Hagerstown, Maryland is on July 28th. it is the closest national of the year. if you guys have not been to an AMA Pro Flattrack race, this is your chance to make it! You don’t want to miss it. if you have time, shoot over to our pits at the race and say hello. i’ll be under the Ford tent and i love to chat with everyone and anyone. See ya there!

SMITH HOLDS ON IN SHORT TRACK

cameron Smith didn’t nail the holeshot in the 50cc Sr. Stock (7-8) class main in the afternoon program on Du Quoin’s short-track, but that didn’t keep the coatesville, Pennsylvania, rider from slipping into the lead.

it only took Smith about a lap to move in front of fast starter Alec espos. From there, Smith started to gap the field, and after a red-flag restart, Smith found himself all alone out front, leading turner roberts and brandon Foerg to the checkered flag.

Smith said the reason for his success is simple. “i’ve been practicing a lot. i practice everyday,” Smith said.

So far, that practice has also earned Smith a second on Monday’s half-mile in addition to his win on the short-track.While most riders in his class are on KtMs, Polinis or cobras, Smith, who’s backed by Miller’s cycles and Stacey racing, is one of only two riders at the 2007 AMA black cat gold Dirt track championships this year riding a conti brand motorcycle.

“i like them because they go real fast,” Smith said.

TEXTER WINS A CLOSE ONE

She didn’t get a great start, but Shayna texter did about everything else right to come from behind and claim the win in the Wiseco 450 Modified class on the mile at the AMA black cat gold Dirt track grand championships.

Although tony Davila nailed the start over brad baker, and it was travis Wyman who took the early lead, texter put her head down and closed the gap on Wyman, slipping underneath the Macedon, new York, rider in turn 4 on the third lap of the race.

that gave texter a clear track to run from the field, but the only problem was James rispoli was carving his way to the front faster than texter was pulling away.

by the mid-point of the race, rispoli caught texter and tried to take the inside line through turn 1, but he couldn’t stick it. the two went back and fourth for the rest of the race until texter successfully outran rispoli’s draft pass attempt on the last lap.

Cameron Smith is your Grand Champion in 50cc SR (7-8) Stock.

Kyle McGrane is your Grand Champion in 50cc Pee Wee -

Shaft Drive.

Shayna Texter wins the Mile in the 450 Mod. division.

the baltimore county trail riders along with the cockeysville optimist club kick off the 13th Annual Kevin Mcnicholas Memorial Series to benefit cystic Fibrosis. the Wednesday night event begins a 6 race series that will take us into the second weekend of August with the opener offering 4 foot trophies sponsored by rothstein Design. As always the racer turnout is great at timonium with 170 plus riders coming out for the first race of the 2007 series. the Sportsman class 15 lap final was first off the line tonight. the race would prove exciting with two pileups between turns 3 and 4 before the race would end. the green flag dropped with Michael Poe jumping out into the early lead. it was beginning to look like Poe was taking control of the race when over half the pack got tangled up in the turn. After a red flag and a re start it would be raun Wood getting out front this time with the pack in pursuit. As fate would have it, only two laps later there would be another big pileup in the same turn. this time the officials let the race continue and it was Wood cruising to the win.in amateur class racing one rider would stand out at timonium in both the 250 and 450 classes. Jake Shoemaker in only his second year on the big bikes is starting to show the future potential that he may have. in 250cc racing action Shoemaker would finish behind Sam Wiggins in his heat race and even had to work his way around him in the main but ended up with the win. Again in the 450 class Shoemaker would finish second in his heat behind Dalton Winkler and would again have to battle him in the main achieving the same results – checkers in the end. Watch this young racer as he progresses into the expert divisions, i believe he has a bright future in this sport.the race of the night and more so in a sportsmanship manner rather than swapping spots on the race track went to the Womens division. in the main event rebecca Zafia and erin Kissinger would battle the entire race with Zafia holding the point position. then in turn three on the last lap Zafia, with the race in control got into some lappers and went down allowing Kissinger to cruise by for the win. Kissinger seeing what happened rode over and told Zafia to jump on, the girls then took a victory lap together with Zafia riding on the back, checkered flag waving in the air. this my friends is what amateur racing is all about. Huge props to these two young ladies, may they be a shining example to the rest of the racing world.

the racing continues back at the timonium Fairgrounds the first two Wednesdays and Fridays in August. You can check out www.bctra.com for all the details and please enjoy complete event photos at: www.mcracingaction.com.

in my last 12 years of riding i have raced over 140 races between Motocross, Hare Scrambles, enduros, cross country championships and i.S.D.e. Qualifiers and had never had a serious injury until this past July at Sleepy Hollow. if you do the math, the odds are still fairly good…what was most ironic about this incident, now referred to as “my season ending moto” is that just prior to that start, my 11 year old daughter was asking if i had ever broken any bones while racing. i may have well been jinxed right there, but i mentally knocked on wood and said no as i lined up for the race.

the more bitter irony of the incident is that i had my best start of the season, running about 5th in a field of 20. A few turns later i took an inside line around a sharp corner in attempt to move up in position. it was here where i unfortunately cross-rutted, and this caused me to lose my balance momentarily. in a matter of seconds, the rider behind me who was locked into that inside rut ran directly into my right leg. As he hit, i felt a small unusual tingle in my lower leg but it was quickly overtaken by that typical rush of muscular pain. it reminded me of my days as a kid, when i went punch for punch, with my buddies, seeing who would give in first. My fellow competitor quickly pulled back out of our entanglement and continued on his way. As for me, i gently let the bike fall to the side so i could sit for a second and run my own quick mental and physical diagnostic check before making the decision to continue or not. Well, i quickly realized something was just not right. upon inquiry by the nearest flagger, i asked for the paramedics without hesitation. As the paramedics began to evaluate my condition, and cut off my sock, it became very obvious to them what i already felt, something was broken.

back at the emergency room, a quick x-ray showed a fracture to my lower leg and severe dislocation of the ankle, requiring surgery to put everything back in place. Within two days i was scheduled for the operation. it left me with one permanent plate and 8 pins holding together the 3 fractures in my fibula, 2 long temporary pins holding my ankle to my leg and 38 staples

closing off the incision. i will be at least 4 -6 more weeks before the second surgery takes place to remove the pins in the ankle and i am sure that it will be at least another 8 to 10 weeks after that before i can even think about getting on a bike again. Don’t even try to keep up with the math here…the only part i remember clearly is how many painkillers i can take to numb the pain.

So here i sit with plenty of time to think. My first thought is that at least i got my first (and hopefully last) break out of the way. And i feel fairly lucky, not having any serious injuries before this point in my riding career. breaking a bone in this way does not bring a sever amount of pain for too long, but i imagine that other injuries must be very painful.

if you have had long term injuries, i would like to hear about the extent of the injury, how much therapy your injury required, how long was it before you could ride again and when you did, how did the injury affect your confidence? or maybe you want to share how long you’ve been at it, skillfully avoiding any serious injuries or how fate stepped in and sparred you from any incidents that may initially have seemed inevitable.

Let me know your responses to these questions, share a story of your own, or simply add a comment. Here’s what you can do to get in touch with me:

1. Send an email to [email protected]. Put the title of the article in the subject line.3. indicate if you want your name (class and riding number if desired) credited or if you prefer to remain anonymous. – Your comments, topic suggestions, or own stories may be included in future articles.

Until next time, ride safe and have fun.Bryan Bitzer #41

David mosier welcomes “Factory Phil nicoletti”

wmXtreme.com Interview

WMXtreme race team would like to welcome Phil nicoletti, national #715 to our team. Phil is an 18 year old, who has loved to ride since he was 4 and still has fond memories of his first race at Southwick at the age of 5 on his PW 50. His goal then was to keep from being lapped by ryan Mills and his current goals are to do the best he possibly can at the Amateur nationals at Loretta’s and perhaps get a team ride for 2008.

even though at the present moment Phil is on the injured list, he expects to come out flying and

better his finishes in 2006 of 2nd in the 125 and 3rd in the Pro-Sport at Loretta’s where he will be pi loting the W M X t r e m e . c o m Honda. in preparation for Loretta’s and the last four nationals of 2007, Phil has been spending most of his time getting back in shape bicycling and training with gary Semics while healing his recent injury. He is looking forward to the

Amateur nationals, where he says the track is ever changing from muddy one day to hardpacked the next and everything in between. He will be riding MX Lites and Pro-sport classes with the MX Lites being his favorite. Phil enjoys a healthy life style by working out, eating right and practicing good family values. He admires motocrosser, Mike Larocco and bicycle racer, Lance Armstrong.

Most of our team riders had the pleasure of meeting and spending time with Phil and his family at Sleepy Hollow last month when he stopped in to help out close friends and sponsor Michael Maresca and his family, also the WMXtreme team riders. After only a short time, we realized having Phil on our team would be such a great advantage, not only because of his riding ability but because he also shares our beliefs in keeping good family values while participating in the sport of motocross.

We want to thank Phil for this personal interview and wish him well on his coming up events.
