President Barack Obama chose a Michigan community college as his stage to unveil an ambitious initiative to help thenation's two-year colleges, and MCC President Dick Shaink wason hand for the announcement. During a town hall meeting heldon Tuesday, July 14 at Macomb Community College in Warren,the President announced the American Graduation Initiative, a proposal to spend $12 billion on community colleges, an effortspecifically designed to help with retraining the unemployed forjobs of the future.

"Community colleges are an essential part of our recovery inthe present and our prosperity in the future," Obama told the audi-ence gathered at Macomb Community College. "Community colleges are an undervalued asset in our country. Not only is thatnot right, it's not smart."

Dr. Shaink was among community college leaders across thestate thrilled with the announcement."Anytime you have the President of the United States tout theadvantages of community colleges, that's a good thing," Dr.Shaink stated. "The jobs of the future are going to require having a college degree. Now is the time tostart getting it."

The Board of Trustees elected its officersin a special re-organizational meeting held onJuly 7. Lenore Croudy will retain her positionas Chairperson of the board. John Snell andAlbert Koegel will also keep their seats asVice Chairperson and Treasurer, respectively.Celia Turner will now serve as Secretary,replacing Fr. James Bettendorf. Fr.Bettendorf, Andrew Everman and SallyShaheen Joseph will continue to serve astrustees on the MCC board.

Adjunct English professor Wendy Byard, author of Teach andReach for Classroom Miracles! Lessons on Teaching With Love," willspeak on "Crime Scene," a radio and TV show hosted by LapeerCounty Prosecutor Byron Konschuh, on Friday, Aug. 21 from 11 amto 12 noon. Respiratory Therapy Prof. Dave Panzlau lets us know that theRespiratory Program is happy and proud to report that the mostrecent graduating class has a pass rate of 100% for the CertifiedRespiratory Therapist (CRT) Exam. There were 17 students in thegraduating class of 2009 and all students were successful by June 30

of this year. This examination is used by the State of Michigan as arequirement to obtain a license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist.

Humanities Dean Patricia Bergh brings news from theHumanities Division. On Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20,MCC's Interpreter Training Program hosted a workshop conducted byCheri Smith and Ken Mikas who conducted training sessions fortheir new "Signing Naturally" curriculum. Interpreter ProgramCoordinator Stevie Naeyaert reported that MCC was one of the threesites across the country where training was held. Over 32 participantsattended, including individuals who traveled from as far asMinnesota, Massachusetts, California, Texas, Florida and Indiana.Another 10 people were on a waiting list. On Friday evening, the par-ticipants toured the Michigan School for the Deaf's 150 year oldSuperintendent's Cottage, some went to our local deaf club and otherswent to the Deaf Professional Happy Hour in Pontiac.

Thanks to the generous funding from the Foundation for MCC,the annual Creative Expressions Camp was held again this year inJuly. Those attending the camp ranged from 8 to 14 years old andparticipated in various art and writing activities. The event was coor-dinated by Jackie Knoll, Assistant Professor of English. OtherHumanities faculty leading sessions were Paula Weston, MawusiJohnstone, and Sounya Walker.

Assistant English professor Jackie Knoll coordinated this year's fourth annual Creative Expressions Camp, which took place July 22-24. Atotal of 24 campers, ages 8-14, attended this year. Humanities faculty Paula Weston, Mawusi Johnstone, and Sounya Walker taught creativewriting workshops featuring themes such as graphic novels, poetry from a visual image, and personal speeches using PowerPoint. MCC gradu-ate Abbie Lemmon also taught a session on writing scary stories and additionally, many MCC student and community member assistants lenttheir skills, including Abbie Lemmon, Destiny Sohlden, Joshua Griffin, Monica Ingram, Miranda Manne, Suzette Lee, Rose Tobias and BenGraham. The camp culminated in a reception on Friday, July 24, in Gorman Auditorium, where campers presented their work to their familiesand friends. The camp is generously funded by the Foundation for Mott Community College.

Administrators with MCC and Eastern Michigan University cametogether on the MCC main campus on Thursday, July 9 to formalize anagreement that will allow for the seamless transition of students seekingbachelor degrees in cutting edge fields at EMU. A special signing cere-mony was held in the Regional Technology Center auditorium to formal-ize the creation of three new articulation agreements with EasternMichigan University. These agreements will allow students to take up to94 credits of coursework at MCC to transfer into one of three bachelordegree programs at EMU: Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor ofBusiness Administration and Bachelor of Science in TechnologyManagement. Students receiving an Associate in Applied Science inBusiness Management, General Business or Accounting, can transfer toEMU to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration. Students receiv-ing an Associate in Applied Science in Nursing can transfer to EMU topursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Students receiving anAssociate in Applied Science degree from MCC in several programs,from Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Technology to CulinaryArts, from Graphic Design to Web Development, can transfer to EMU topursue a Bachelor of Science in Technology Management degree.Articulation agreements specify a course taking plan, ultimately resultingin a seamless transfer of credits for students to their chosen program ofstudy at a four-year educational institution. MCC has articulation agree-ments with more than a dozen universities in Michigan that allow transfercredits from MCC in more than 50 programs.
