They were treated to pizza and took the MCC Placement Test. The high school juniors will participate in the DEEP Dual Enrollment Project with Lapeer Community Schools beginning in fall 2014. A total of 97 stu- dents are slated to take courses as dual enrolled stu- dents Monday through Thursday at the Lapeer Extension Center this fall, representing an increase of 34 students over the 2013/14 academic year. This is the second year of the project. Counselors Mary Ann Newbill, Mary Koopman and Erica Findora fa- cilitated the orientations, with support from the Ad- missions and Placement Testing Offices staff. The Lapeer Extension Center also welcomed Julie Simmonds as a new staff member. She will be working at the front desk as Secretary. Julie brings extensive secretarial and customer service experience from her years of work at Goodrich Schools, where she was known as the “get ‘er done gal” who comes to work early and stays late to get the job done. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Michigan-Flint. Julie is married with three children, Brent, Courtney, and Jenna. Her husband, Brad, works for the State of Michigan Department of Corrections. The family resides in Davison. Julie says she keeps active outside by running/jogging, walking and biking in the summer. The Foundation for Mott Community College in- vites the campus community to join us in wishing Dr. Shaink and his wife Sally a fond farewell Friday, June 20, at two separate events. First, “Tea with Sally Shaink” will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Ap- plewood Café. MCC Bids Farewell to Dr. and Mrs.Shaink June 20

Lapeer Extension Center SeesGrowth and Welcomes New Staff

The Lapeer Extension Center hosted 79 Lapeer

High School students for one of three MCC New

Student Orientations Thursday, April 24. They were

treated to pizza and took the MCC Placement Test.

Glenn Martin reports the Upward Bound Summer Program

will begin on June 27 with the Annual Kick-Off at Kearsley Park.

Classes run Monday, June 30 through Aug. 8. The program is re-

cruiting rising 8th grade students from the Beecher, Westwood

Heights and Flint school districts. Application information can be

downloaded from the UB webpage on the MCC website.

No one will be shushing Jessica Himstedt, Librarian I in Tech.

Services/Circulation in the Mott Library, when she performs scenes

from Mozart's "Die Zauberflöte" with the Flint Light Opera June 9,

at the Flint Institute of Music. Also being performed that evening

will be scenes from Gilbert & Sullivan's “Pirates of Penzance” and

Puccini's “Gianni Schicchi.”

Other talented employees will take to the boards with the

Kearsley Park Players. Sue Ellen Hange, Professor of Chemistry in

the Science & Math Division, and Michael Kelly, Executive Direc-

tor of Marketing and Public Information, will be in the Kearsley

Park Players' production of the Merry Wives of Windsor beginning

June 13 at the Kearsley Park Pavilion.

Congratulations to Angela Reeves, Counselor in Counseling &

Student Development, for being named "VIP Woman of the Year

for Outstanding Excellence and Dedication to Her Profession and

the Achievement of Women" by the National Association of Profes-

sional Women at their national conference in New York in April.

Anne Crites, Academic Fieldwork Coordinator in the Occupa-

tional Therapy Assistant program, presented at the Michigan Occu-

pational Therapy Education Consortium's "Fieldwork Educator

Day," May 9 at Western Michigan University. Anne presented a ses-

sion entitled "Sharing the Road," which focused on educating field-

work supervisors to adapt teaching styles to the learning styles of

their students. Several teaching tools were provided to the field-

work supervisors to promote critical thinking in the clinical setting.

MCC OTA faculty members will attend additional regional work-

shops in the fall.

Honors Program Coordinator Dr. Brian Ivory shares news that

Honors students Jasmyn Reed and Mantrese Griffin were selected

to participate in the 2014 Community College Summer Research

Fellowship Program at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. The

five-week program enables students to engage in research in a field

of interest, connect with University faculty, and gain familiarity

with the UM campus and its resources. The program runs June 2

through Aug. 8.

Students in Media Arts and Entertainment (MAET-150) class

of the Fine Arts & Social Sciences Division created a news video of

the recent Law Enforcement Job Fair in the Ballenger Field House.

McMorris said the stories were assembled by students working in

groups and incorporated into their final assignment, which was a

short newscast. He would like to have his class producing weekly

news stories for MCC's closed-circuit system.

Steve Schmidt of Mott Community College has been named as a

court coach for the 2014 USA Basketball Men’s 18-and-under (U18) Na-

tional Team training camp that will take place June 10-19 at the U.S.

Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

As a court coach, Schmidt will assist the USA U18 coaching staff

during the first three days of training camp. The USA Basketball Men’s

Junior National Team Committee is responsible for selecting the coaches.

In 23 seasons (1991-92 to present) as the head men’s basketball

coach at Mott Community College, Schmidt has compiled an impressive

629-134 career record (.825 winning percentage) and has led the Bears to

four NJCAA national championships (2003, 2007, 2008 and 2012).

“It is a honor to be selected to assist with the USA Basketball Men's

U18 National Team training camp,” Schmidt said. “I'm excited about the

opportunity to work with the top players in the country as well as with

some outstanding coaches.”

The training camp will be used to select the 12-member roster for

the USA team that will play in the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Champi-

onship, which is scheduled for June 20-24at the USOTC.

“We are proud of this recognition for the excellent coaching skills

that Steve Schmidt has brought to Mott College basketball,” said MCC

President Dick Shaink. “His winning ways and focus on academics as

well as athletics has made Coach Schmidt an example of the best aspects

in the sport. I am certain he will make a major contribution to our na-

tion’s Olympic basketball program.”

MCC Staff and Faculty showed their support for the Flint

River Watershed Coalition Saturday, April 26 by volunteering

for the Flint River and Community Clean Up at three sites,

Pierce Park, Kearsley Park and the Carriage Town Ministries.

shed and community!

MCC Employees Clean Up

Yoga classes for faculty and staff will resume starting Sept. 20

and Oct. 1, with a new twist – there will be day and evening classes to

better fit your schedule.

Sponsored by the MCC Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL),

in partnership with the MCC Wellness Advisory Council (WAC),

classes will run once a week for ten weeks. Both classes will meet in

the CTL (ML 3106). The evening Yoga class will meet every Tuesday

from 5:15-6:15 p.m. (Sept. 30-Dec. 2), and the daytime Yoga class

will meet every Wednesday from 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. (Oct. 1-Dec.

3).

The total cost for ten sessions is $60; space in each class is lim-

ited to the first 15 people who submit their payment to the CTL. To

complete registration, make checks payable to "The Yoga Loft" and

submit to Dale Weighill, Executive Dean for Professional Develop-

ment & Experiential Learning, in ML 3006. Indicate which class, ei-

ther Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning, you plan to attend.

Missed sessions can be made up free-of-charge at The Yoga

Loft’s location on Saginaw Street in downtown Flint. Arrangements

to do make-up visits should be made directly with Yoga instructor,

Lois Sharp-Schneider.
