Mott Community College welcomes Clark R. Harris, who started April 15 as the new Dean of the Technology Division. Dr. Harris and his family are moving from Manhattan, Kansas. Dr. Harris holds a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia in Practical Arts and Vocational- Technical Education, as well as a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science from Kansas State University. His professional education experiences include work as an assistant professor with the Department of Secondary Education at Kansas State University, where he taught, advised, researched and provided service in agricultural education and instructional technology. He has also served as executive director of the Multistate Academic and Vocational Curriculum Consortium in Stillwater, Oklahoma and as Director of the Tech Prep program at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Missouri. Dr. Harris has taught 20 different undergraduate and graduate courses at Kansas State University and at State Fair Community College, with high levels of integration of technology, student engage- ment and innovative teaching and learning strategies. He has taught several online and online-hybrid courses, including a graduate class entitled “Planning for Change in Classroom Technology.” Other professional activities include over 75 significant national, regional or state conference presentations, the development of several work-related Web sites, including the worldofagriculture.org, several published articles, including “Designing Flexible Instruction" in Principal Leadership, “Harnessing the Power of the Internet” and “Advising on the Web” in The Agricultural Education Magazine, and he has written several curriculum products that are sold and used nationally. Dr. Harris has held several professional leadership positions, such as chair of the Missouri Tech Prep Directors Association, and he has served as the president of the Association of Instructional Materials, a division of the Association of Career and Technical Education. Heather S. Sisto received an award for ten years of service asMCC's Honors Program Coordinator. The award was presented atthe May 19th Board of Trustees Meeting by Vice-President ofAcademic Affairs Amy Fugate. Heather and two honors studentsthen gave a presentation about the Honors Program for the Boardmembers.Dr. Brian Ivory, MCC Counselor, was an invited speaker at theFaCIT Conference on Teaching, Learning and Civic Engagement,May 18-20 in Mt. Pleasant and and presented the following work-shop: "Active Learning Strategies that Acclimate Students to YourClassroom Culture."

Administrative Assistant Melanie Kolacheck in Counselingand Student Development (CASD) lets us know that CASD admin-istrative assistant Marie Luck is now Marie Luck-Allard!Congratulations to the new bride, who was married on May 2.

CASD Staff Assistant Lori Wcisel lets us know that herdaughter, Michelle, an MCC alumni, recently graduated with hon-ors from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science inZoology, Animal Behavior & Neurobiology with a minor in MarineBiology. Michelle has accepted a summer position with theUniversity of Florida, supervising undergraduate interns in the SeaTurtle Program monitoring the beaches of St. Joseph Peninsula.She has also been accepted into the South African Marine PredatorLab's post-graduate internship program and in February will travelto Mossel Bay to join their research project on great white sharks.

Fine Arts Prof. John Dempsey has paintings in the SaginawArt Museum's Fifth Annual Michigan Invitational exhibition,"They Practice What They Teach: A Selection of Recent Paintingsfrom Michigan College and University Faculty" to be held June 29through Sept. 8, 2008. The Museum will host an opening receptionfor this exhibition on Sunday, June 29, from 1 pm to 5 pm.

Mott Library Services Director Denise Hooks has news fromher area. Several months ago, Reference and Archives LibrarianDiana Hiles provided information from the College Archives toEmily Zilber, Graham Collections Fellow at Cranbrook ArtMuseum. Cranbrook is doing a book and exhibit on RichardDeVore, a former instructor in the Department of Ceramics at FlintJunior College, from 1957 to 1966. "Ms. Zilber’s reaction uponreceiving the materials indicated that Diana’s work was outstand-ing." Denise added. "She said, 'I received the DeVore CD yester-day, and have just had the chance to look at it this morning - whata treasure trove of information! Thank you again for your time andeffort on the project.' " Richard DeVore: Retrospective and "LastWorks" runs from June 14 to Sept. 14, 2008 at the Cranbrook ArtMuseum, 39221 Woodward Avenue, Bloomfield Hills.

Prof. Bettie L. Goodman of the Business Division, attendedthe 2008 National Business Education Association AnnualConvention in San Antonio, Texas from March 19-22, 2008. Thisconvention, composed of business educators throughout the U.S.and several foreign countries, including Poland, Canada, Irelandand the Faroe Islands, had approximately 1,900 in attendance. Theconvention theme was “Educating for Success in Business andLife,” and Prof. Goodman attended more than 15 sessions.Keynote speakers included John Kasich, host of the Heartland onthe FOX News Channel; William C. Bosher, DistinguishedProfessor of Public Policy and Education and the ExecutiveDirector of the Commonwealth Policy Institute, and LaDonnaGatlin, a motivational speaker who grew up on stage singing withher brothers -- the legendary Gatlin Brothers. Some of the mostinteresting sessions and those that Prof. Goodman found useful forclassroom instructions were: “Creative Teaching Strategies: WhatWe Have for You and What You Can Give to Others;” “Microsoft

Office 2007: Tips and Tricks;” “Online Course Delivery;”“International Experiential Learning;” and “Motivating Students:What You Can Do Monday.” Prof. Goodman was presented withthe Past President Plaque in appreciation for her leadership andservice to the International Society for Business Education from2006 – 2008. She was the first African American to serve in thiscapacity for this organization.

Mike Glynn, Livingston Center site director, completed theLeadership Livingston program hosted by Cleary University,Howell. Mike and 13 other community leaders participated in thenine-month program that began last September. Each monthly ses-sion addressed a specific community issue, including the nature ofleadership, leadership in action, education; health and human serv-ices; the justice system; local and state government and the chal-lenges to the future of Livingston County. Mike led four othermembers of the group in a Community Service Project as part ofan inmate literacy initiative. The group recorded inmates of theLivingston County Jail reading a book they had written titled,“Sweet Dreams.” Two copies of the book, crayons to color theillustrations, a portable CD player and an audio CD were thendelivered to the inmates' children. After the child colored the illus-trations, one of the books was returned to the jailed parent. Theproject was designed to help bridge the gap created between a par-ent and child when the parent is incarcerated for an extended peri-od of time. MCC’s Kearsley Park Project is again presenting its annual“Shakespeare in the Park” for the 5th year at the park pavilion.This year’s production - “Taming of the Shrew” – includes MCC’sMichael Kelly in the cast. Performances on Thursday, Friday andSaturdays (June 12, 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21) are at 8 pm and Sundays(June 15 and 21) are at 2 pm. Thursday performances are free.Friday, June 13 is the special Gala Benefit with champagne, straw-berries and cream (tickets $25) while tickets for other performanc-es are $10. Tickets are available at door.

On May 15, 2008, CherylBassett became the President ofEducational TechnologyOrganization of Michigan (ETOM),a consortium of distance learning,information technology and audio-visual professionals throughout thestate. The group functions to lever-age state-wide purchasing power forcourseware and educational soft-ware and to offer professionaldevelopment and networking oppor-tunities with other community colleges and universities during theFall and Spring of each academic year. Cheryl has been an ETOMBoard member since 2006 and the Presidency is a one-year term. AsExecutive Dean of Educational Systems at MCC, she oversees theareas of Academic Computing, Distance Learning and MediaServices. She is also serving in the role of Interim ExecutiveDirector of Management Information Systems, which includes theareas of Application Systems, Help Desk and Network Services.

Nancy Beals, custodian and senior group leader with thePhysical Plant Department, has been chosen the OutstandingEmployee of the Month for April 2008. Nancy was described as a"self-motivated individual who seeks out ways to further improve thework that she does on a daily basis. She encourages others to dotheir very best and to take pride in their work and assists in helpingothers improve the quality of their services, which has made a posi-tive impact on the entire group." Congratulations, Nancy!
